SAMPLE YOUNG PERSONS RISK ASSESSMENT

The purpose of the Young Persons Risk Assessment is to make sure the health, safety and welfare of the young person has been considered with respect to their age, experience, maturity and any other factors. This will also make sure you have complied with Regulation 19 of the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000. This sample Young Persons Risk Assessment is designed for you to use as a starting point for the risk assessment you will need to complete. Risk Assessments in relation to young persons must take account of: Their inexperience, lack of awareness and immaturity Exposure to chemical, biological and physical agents Work equipment intended for their use; and The organisation of processes and activities intended for them to undertake. Measures to manage risks may not be extraordinary to those that are already in place. However, there may be instances where additional measures specific to young persons are necessary, eg close supervision. In certain circumstances, young persons will be prohibited from undertaking particular activities because of age-related restrictions or because significant risks are identified that cannot be avoided. Such risks can include: Work beyond their physical or psychological capabilities Work in which there is a risk to their health from exposure to extreme cold or heat, noise or vibration. Work involving harmful exposure to radiation Exposure to substances chronically harmful to human health, eg toxic carcinogenic, skin or respiratory sensitising, or have effects likely to be passed on genetically, or likely to harm the unborn child. Accidents which are unlikely to be recognised because of a lack of experience, training or sufficient attention to safety. As with any risk assessment, they must be revised periodically or where circumstances (eg nature of work changes, incident occurs) may make them no longer valid.

You can change this sample to suit your own situation and the needs of the young person. You will need to both:1. Tick the box of the specific hazard identified which are applicable to the job you are offering and 2. Add any further hazards that are not shown which apply to the job as this may NOT be a complete list of the significant risks and their control measures for your situation.
