CRTICAL ANNALYSIS OF THE CASE STUDIES ByAMRITA HALDAR

As the saying goes DOING IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN KNOWING so we were introduced with the concept of case study as a part of our integral learning process. A case study is a problem based learning in which a situation is given with a problem in it which has to be analysed with a plan or decision. The best point of learning through a case study is when you convert the theoretical learning in practical situation we get an exposure and proper understanding of the concepts. It also in builds the spirit of better communication and putting up views and points in a group. It also helps in team building and skill development of a person. Case studies are of 6 types. A case study should have an executive summary, opening paragraph, scope, presentation of facts, and description of key issues. It is not necessary that a case study can be only of one type it can be of two or more type also. We were introduced with three case studies. So as to enhance our knowledge in skills in the field of media and communication. To develop strategies to understand the market and the work environment because in ever-changing and very active media world it is always good to learn from the past experience as there are different types of situation and incident available which can be related and analysed from theoretical point of view. The first case given to us was a background case named BHARAT EXPORTS which was written by some people from Prestige Institute of Management. The case has a linear format. It basically deals with the technical problem of the company and how a coming of a new manager made the company to change on the technical aspect. The time frame in which the case is recorded has become pretty old for todays fast growing world. The case has the solution in itself plus ther e was no sufficient data on other aspects so that the case cant be discussed from the other aspect. Therefore the case was not of much relevance to our course of media but might have served purpose in any other technical field study. The second case given to us was HOLMESAFE LTD which is a situational and background case in which the company is formed from initiation of an idea. The company do fairly well but after some period they are put into a situation of losing their most important client. It was a good case to understand that how businesses initiate from a single entrepreneur and help us to understand the basic business model better. It also gives a proper and broader scope to analyse the situation better. But in many places of the case we had to make assumption as some data were missing. Since there is no timeframe. We can use the case to study at any point of time. It became useful for our business communication and business strategy. It showed how to manage our clients and how to maintain relations with them and how to present our company. The third case given to us was RAPID REWARDS FOR SOUTHWEST AIRLINES it was a background case with a reference to one incident in it. The case was a non linear case we had to assemble all the data to analyse it. It had lot of data which helped to analyse and understand the basic working of a large business. It was the best case among all the three cases. It helped us to understand many aspect of our studies in media world. It taught from the origin of a company laying of the foundation to forming its vision, mission and following the ethics/ principle layer during the origin. It also covered many other

aspect of an organisation like how to manage the organisation, how HR policies to be maintained, how cost cutting to be maintained from many aspects of organisation, how to make bench mark from other field and keep improvising. The only part it couldnt teach is the customer satisfaction part and how to target the ef fective customer to extract revenue from them. This was the exact case to analyse and understand whatever we need to know in the media world and to function smoothly in an organisation.

In the end of the session we were able to relate all the cases with the business of the media world how to relate the theoretical aspect to the problem so as to find a proper solution to it.
