1.Ancientcultures
Thesevensacredplanetsoftheancientsare:Saturn,Jupiter,Mars,Venus,Mercury,andtheSunandMoon.1TheSunandMoonarenot, ofcourse,planetsintheusualsenseoftheterm,butfromageocentricperspectiveallthesesevenbodiesappeartorevolvearoundthe Earth.TheosophyexplainsthattheSunandMoonarereallysubstitutesfortwohiddenplanets,onebetweenMercuryandtheSun,andthe otherneartheMoon. Uranus,Neptune,andPlutowerediscoveredin1781,1846,and1930respectively.In2006Plutowasdowngradedtothestatusofa dwarfplanet.2Itisoftensaidthatancientculturesdidnotrefertoanyoftheseplanetsbecausetheyarenotreadilyvisibletothenaked eyeandwerethereforeunknown.H.P.Blavatskycomments: Thenowuniversalerrorofattributingtotheancientstheknowledgeofonlysevenplanets,simplybecausetheymentionedno others,isbasedonthesamegeneralignoranceoftheiroccultdoctrines.Thequestionisnotwhethertheywere,orwerenot, awareoftheexistenceofthelaterdiscoveredplanetsbutwhetherthereverencepaidbythemtothefourexotericandthree secretgreatgodsthestarangels,hadnotsomespecialreason.Thewriterventurestosaytherewassuchareason,andit isthis.Hadtheyknownofasmanyplanetsaswedonow(andthisquestioncanhardlybedecidedatpresent,eitherway), theywouldhavestillconnectedwiththeirreligiousworshiponlytheseven,becausethesesevenaredirectlyandspecially connectedwithourearth... 3 Thesevenplanetsarenotlimitedtothisnumberbecausetheancientsknewofnoothers,butsimplybecausetheywerethe primitiveorprimordial houses oftheseven Logoi .Theremaybenineandninetynineotherplanetsdiscoveredthisdoesnot alterthefactofthesesevenalonebeingsacred. 4 Likeotherwriters,HPBsaysthatearlierculturesdidinfactknowofmoreplanets: evenwiththeSunandtheMoonthrownoutofthecalculation,theancientsseemtohaveknownofseven planets.Howmany moreareknowntous,sofar,ifwethrowouttheEarthandMoon?Seven ,andnomore:Sevenprimaryorprincipalplanets, therest planetoids ratherthanplanets. 5 Anotherproof...thattheancientInitiatesknewofmorethan seven planetsistobefoundintheVishnuPurana,BookII.,ch.xii., where,describingthechariotsattachedtoDhruva(thepolestar),Parasaraspeaksofthechariotsofthe NINE planets,which areattachedbyaerialcords. 6 ThesevensacredplanetsandtheEarthformaparticularhierarchywithinthesolarkingdombecausetheyarecloselyunitedinoriginand destiny.Togethertheyformthesacredogdoadoftheancients. 7Accordingtotheosophy,therearereally12sacredplanets.Theancients, too,sometimesreferredto12spiritualplanetariesorrectors,knownasthetwelvecounselgodsandcalledintheEtruscoRoman languageconsentesdiiconsentingorcooperatinggods.8 Theancientsarrangedthesevenplanetsinthefollowingorder:Saturn,Jupiter,Mars,Sun,Venus,Mercury,Moon.Thisorderisdefinedby theirgeocentricradii,i.e.therelativetimeoccupiedbyeachinitsapparentorbitoftheEarth:approx.30years,12years,2years,1year, 7months,3months,and1monthrespectively.9 Theorderofthedaysoftheweekisdeterminedasfollows.Imaginethatthefirsthourofaparticulardayisunderthegovernanceof Saturn.Eachsubsequenthourisunderthegovernanceofthesubsequentplanet.The8th,15th,and22ndhoursarethereforegovernedby Saturn.The24thhourisgovernedbyMars,andthefirsthourofthenextdayisgovernedbytheSun:Saturnday(Saturday)istherefore followedbySunday(Sunday).Thesameprocedureisfollowedindeterminingtheremainingfivedaysoftheweek. 10 Theorderand namesofthedaysofourweekarethereforebasedonancientastrology.Moreover,

2.Thesacredplanets
HPBsaysthatthesevensacredplanetsweretheheavenlybodiesindirectastralandpsychiccommunicationwiththeEarth,itsGuides, andWatchersmorallyandphysicallythevisibleorbsfurnishingourHumanitywithitsoutwardandinwardcharacteristics,andtheir RegentsorRectors withourMonadsandspiritualfaculties.ThesacredplanetsdidnotincludeUranusorNeptune,notonlybecause theywereunknownunderthesenamestotheancientSages,butbecause,they,asallotherplanets,howevermanytheremaybe,arethe gods andguardiansofotherseptenarychainsofglobeswithinoursystems.1 Thesevensacredplanetsareusuallylistedas:Saturn,Jupiter,Mars,Venus,Mercury,Sun,Moon.TheSunisasubstituteforaplanet betweenMercuryandtheSun,atpresentinvisiblebutsuspectedbysome19thcenturyastronomers,whocalleditVulcan.2TheMoonisa substituteforaplanet(Lilith)sometimesseennearthemoonbythosewhohaveeyestosee.3InoneplaceHPBomitsMarsfromthe listofsacredplanets:Saturn,Jupiter,Mercury,andVenus,thefourexotericplanets,andthethreeothers,whichmustremainunnamed.4 G.dePuruckerexplains:Likethesunandthemoonwhicharesubstitutesfortwosecretplanets,Marstoacertainextentisinthe samecategory.5 Therearereally12sacredplanets,justasthereare12globesofaplanetarychain.Theseincludethesevencommonlyreferredto,plus theEarthandfourotherinvisibleplanetarychains. 6Eachglobeofourplanetarychainisthechildof,andinasensebuilt,controlled,and guidedby,oneinparticular,butallingeneral,ofthe12sacredplanets.OurownglobeD,forexample,wasespeciallybuiltby,andis especiallyguidedby,Saturn,assistedbyourMoon.Thereferencehereistotheensoulingdivinitiesofthesacredplanetsratherthantheir materialbodies. 7Eachroundandeachrootracearelikewiseundertheparticulargovernanceofoneofthesacredplanets.8

Planetaryandzodiacalcorrespondencesofthe12globesofourplanetarychain. 9 Thesevenortwelveplanetsaresacredbecausetheyarethetransmitterstotheglobesofourplanetarychainofthetwelveprimalspiritual andotherforcesemanatingasminorlogoifromthesupremelogosofourSun.Eachlogosistherectororgeniusofoneofthesacred planetsandusesthatplanetasitsprincipalhouseornervecentre.Themainsubstanceofaplanetarychaincomesfromitselfthroughits layacentre,butitdrawsintoitselfotherenergiesandatomsflowingfromitsfamilyofsacredplanets,whicharecloselyattunedtoit karmically.Thelifeflowfromthesacredplanetsprovidesuswithoursevenelementsandprinciples. 10 ThespiritualrectorsorgovernorsofthesacredplanetsaretheworldbuildersorkosmokratoresoftenmentionedbytheGreek philosophers.Ourplanetarychainwasbuiltbythesekosmokratores,alongwiththesvabhavicimpulsesemanatingfromtheplanetary

3.Mars/Mercurycontroversy
In1882A.P.SinnettaskedmahatmaKHthefollowingquestion: Whatotherplanetsofthoseknowntoordinaryscience,besidesMercury,belongtooursystemofworlds? Arethemorespiritualplanets(A,B&Y,Z)visiblebodiesintheskyorareallthoseknowntoastronomyofthemore materialsort? 1 AsHPBlatersaid,tothisvagueandindefinitequestionKHgaveanequallyvagueandincompletereply: Marsandfourotherplanetsofwhichastronomyknowsyetnothing.NeitherA,B,norY,Z,areknownnorcantheybeseen throughphysicalmeanshoweverperfected. 2 SinnettmisinterpretedthistomeanthatthephysicalplanetsMarsandMercurywereglobesCandEoftheEarthplanetarychainaview heexpressedinanarticlein TheTheosophist andinhisbook EsotericBuddhism .3

HPBreferstothisgreatmistakeinTheSecretDoctrine ,whencorrectingthegratuitousspeculations...sometimesindulgedinbythe Europeanlaychelas. Itwasasked:Whatplanets,ofthoseknowntoordinaryscience,besidesMercury,belongtooursystemofworlds?Nowif bySystemofWorldsourterrestrialchain orstringwasintendedinthemindofthequerist,insteadoftheSolarSystemof Worlds,asitshouldhavebeen,thenofcoursetheanswerwaslikelytobemisunderstood.Forthereplywas:Mars,etc.,and fourotherplanetsofwhichastronomyknowsnothing.NeitherA,B,norYZareknownnorcantheybeseenthroughphysical meanshoweverperfected.Thisisplain:(a)Astronomyasyetknowsnothinginrealityoftheplanets,neithertheancientones, northosediscoveredinmoderntimes.(b)No companion planetsfromAtoZ, i.e. ,noupperglobesofanychainintheSolar System,canbeseen.[Withtheexceptionofcourseofalltheplanetswhichcome fourth innumber,asourearth,themoon, etc.,etc.HPB]AstoMars,Mercury,andthefourotherplanets,theybeararelationtoEarthofwhichnomasterorhigh Occultistwilleverspeak,muchlessexplainthenature. ...neitherMarsnorMercurybelong toourchain .Theyare,alongwiththeotherplanets,septenaryUnits inthegreathostof chainsofoursystem,andallareasvisibleastheir upperglobesareinvisible. 4 HPBthenquotesanotherletterfromKH: OurGlobe,astaughtfromthefirst,isatthebottomofthearcofdescent,wherethematterofourperceptionsexhibitsitselfin itsgrossestform....HenceitonlystandstoreasonthattheglobeswhichovershadowourEarthmustbeondifferentand superiorplanes.Inshort,asGlobes,theyarein COADUNITION butnot INCONSUBSTANTIALITYWITHOUREARTH andthuspertain toquiteanotherstateofconsciousness. 5 Insteadoflearningfromhismistake,SinnettchosetotakeoffenceatHPBsscandalousremarks.HewasconvincedthatHPBwas wrongandhewasright. 6HiserrorregardingMarsandMercurywaslaterendorsedbyAnnieBesantandC.W.Leadbeater,basedon theirclairvoyantinvestigations. 7YetitappearstohavebeenKHhimselfwhowasresponsibleforthecorrectionspresentedintheSDin August1888hewrotetoH.S.Olcott: Beassuredthatwhatshe[HPB]hasnot annotated fromscientificandotherworks,wehavegivenor suggested toher.Every mistakeorerroneousnotion,correctedandexplainedbyherfromtheworksofothertheosophistswas correctedbyme,or undermyinstruction .8 ItwaslefttoGdePtoshedfurtherlightonKHsreplytoSinnett.Hepointsoutthatoursystemofworldscanrefertoouruniversalsolar system(i.e.allthesolarsystemsrevolvingaroundthesamerajasunasourown 9),ourplanetarychain,ourgroupofsevensacredplanets, andtothismysterygroupEarth,Mercury,Mars,andfourothersecretplanets.KHsgeneralizedreplyrefersinparticulartothislatter group,becauseSinnetthadjustbeenquestioningKHonacertainaspectoftheteachingswhichcouldnotbefullyexplainedwithout givingoutthedoctrineconcerningthismysterygroup.10 GdePexplainsthatmanyplanetarychainsinoursolarsystemanduniversalsolarsystemhavenoglobesonourownplaneofperception. Allthecountlessplanetarychains,visibleandinvisible,aredividedintofamiliesofseven(ortwelve),whosemembersarecloselyrelated karmically. 11 Referringtoourownsacredplanets,hewrites: [The]sevensacredplanetsareprofoundlyinstrumentalinbuildingourplanetarychainbuttheearthalsoitselfisoneofanother grouporseriesofsevenplanets,whichbuildorcooperateinbuildingtheplanetarychainofcertainotheronesofour planets... 12 Earth,Mercury,Mars,andthefoursecretplanetsareaseptenarygroupwhosefunctionistoactinbuildinganotherplanetarychain.13 Ourownplanetarychainhelpstobuildandguideoneoftheotherplanetarychainsinparticularbutalltheotherplanetarychainsofour solarsystemingeneral.Mars,forexample,isbuiltbyitsparticulargroupofsevenortwelveplanetarychains,itselfbeingtheeighthofits ogdoad,andourEarthchainisoneofthese. 14 Notallofthesevensacredplanetsofanyoftheplanetsinoursolarsystemwould necessarybeourownsacredplanets. 15 Referringtothetwelvesacredplanets,GdePwrites: Wethushavethesevenplanetarychains,twoofwhichareinvisible,respectivelyVulcanandthesacredplanetnamedin connectionwiththemoonandtherearefourotherinvisibleplanetarychainsmentionedinTheMahatmaLetters (p.176) underthemerelettersA,B,andY,Z.Thesefour,withthesevenenumerated,makeeleven,towhichwemayaddthesolar chain,formingthefullnumberoftwelve.Theseplanetarychainsarethosewhichespeciallyrecognizeoursunastheirruler, andthereforetheyformthemainmembersofitskingdom. 16 GdePsinclusionofthesolarchainintheprecedingquotationmaybeablind,sinceKHincludestheEarthinthemysterygroupof planetsthatincludeA,B,Y,andZ.ThisissupportedbyGdePsstatementthatthefieldsofactionofthespiritualmonadareoursolar system,particularlythesevensacredplanetsandourearthaswellasfourothersecretplanetarychains.17 Healsowrites: Thereareonlytwelvesacredplanetsforusinthesolarsystem.ThesunisourcommonChief.[T]hisisthesecretwhyJesus hadtwelvediscipleswhilehehimselfwasthethirteenthorteacher. 18 Notestosection3 1.ML2148,ML C307. 2.ML2176,ML C331.

On26March1859,amateurastronomerE.M.LescarbaultofOrgres,France,observedaroundblackspotofplanetsizecrossingthe Sunsdisk.Itmovedaquarterofthesolardiameterinaboutanhourandaquarter.TheFrenchmathematicianUrbainLeVerrierwho togetherwithJohnAdamsiscreditedwithhavingpredictedthepositionofNeptunebeforeitwasdiscovered,basedonanomaliesinthe orbitofUranus 2investigatedLescarbaultsobservationandconcludedthatitwasgenuine.Hecomputedthefollowingorbit:period19 days17hours,meandistancefromSun0.147astronomicalunits(AU),inclinationofitsorbittotheecliptic1210.Theplanetsdiameter wasconsiderablysmallerthanMercurysanditsmasswasestimatedat1/17ofMercurysmass.LeVerrierexpectedtheretobeatleast two,andusuallyfour,transitseachyear,around3Apriland6October. On4April1876,GermanastronomerHenrichWebersawasmallroundspotontheSun.LeVerriersorbitindicatedapossibletransiton 3Aprilofthatyear.ByselectingthefivestrongestobservationsofVulcan,R.Wolfcalculatedaperiodof42.2dayswhileLeVerrier thoughtaperiodof28.01daysmightfittheobservationsbetter.However,VulcanfailedtoshowitselfinOctoberofthatyearaspredicted. Moreover,twoastronomerssaidthattheytoohadseenWebersrounddotbutclaimeditwasnothingbutasunspotwithoutapenumbra. LeVerrieragainrevisedhiscalculations,anddecidedthatVulcanhadfailedtoappearbecauseitmovedinahighlyeccentricorbitwith anextremeinclinationof10.9.Hederivedanewperiodof33daysandpredictedthenexttransitfor22March1877butagainitfailed toappear.LeVerrierdiedlaterthatyear,stillastaunchbelieverinVulcan. SearchesforVulcancontinuedtobemade,includingduringsolareclipses.Veryoccasionallysomethingunusualwasseen,butnotby manyastronomerssimultaneously.MostastronomersabandonedthesearchforVulcanafterEinsteinpublishedhisgeneralrelativity theoryin1915,whichsupposedlyexplainedtheMercurysanomalousperihelionadvance(seebelow).InMay1929ErwinFreundlichof PotsdamphotographedthetotalsolareclipsefromSumatra.Acomparisonoftheplateswithimagestakensixmonthslaterrevealedno unknownobjectbrighterthanthe9thmagnitudeneartheSun. However,afewastronomersremainedconvincedthatnotalltheallegedobservationsofVulcanwerebogus.HenryCourtenandhis associatesstudiedphotographicplatesofthe1966and1970solareclipses,anddetectedseveralobjectswhichappearedtobein orbitsclosetotheSunafewwereconfirmedbyotherobservers.Courtenbelievedthatanintramercurialplanetoidbetween130and800 kilometresindiameterwasorbitingtheSunatadistanceofabout0.1AU.Otherimagesonhiseclipseplatesledhimtopostulatethe existenceofanasteroidbeltbetweenMercuryandtheSun. Someoftheseobjectscouldhavebeenfaintcometsorsmallasteroids.Inrecentyearsnumeroussmallsungrazingcometshavebeen recordedbysatellites,andsomehavecollidedwiththeSun.Inadditiontomisidentifiedsunspotsandstars,nearearthobjectsmightalso accountforsomeoftheearliersightingsofobjectsassumedtobeclosetotheSun,andthiscouldexplainwhytheywerevisiblefrom somelocationsbutnotothers.Today,thequestcontinuesforVulcanoidasteroids, 4butanyasteroidslargerthanabout60kmare consideredtohavebeenruledout. TheMoonisthesecondbrightestobjectintheskyaftertheSun.Ithasadiameterof3476km(comparedtotheEarths12,756km)and orbitstheEarthatanaveragedistanceof384,400km.ItiscommonlybelievedtobetheEarthsonlynaturalsatellite.However,the possibilitythattheEarthhasoneormoreothernaturalsatelliteshaslongbeenahottopicamongastronomersandastrologersalike. In1846,FrenchastronomerFredericPetitannouncedthattwoobserversatToulouseandathirdatArtenachaddiscoveredasecond moonoftheEarthon21Marchofthatyear.Hecalculatedthatittook2hours44minutes59secondstoorbittheEarth,andthatits ellipticalorbittookitascloseas11.4kmtotheEarthssurfaceatitsnearestapproach(perigree)andasfaras3570kmatitsfurthest point(apogee).Yearslater,hearguedthatasecond,smallmooncouldaccountforcertainunexplainedminordeviationsinthemotionof ourprincipalmoonbutitwouldhavetobeatleastseveralmileslargeandwouldhavebeenspottedbyancientskygazers. In1922,USastronomerW.H.PickeringpublishedanarticleonthepossibilityofameteoricsatelliteorbitingEarth.Hecalculatedthata satellite0.3metresindiameterorbiting320kmabovetheEarthssurfaceshouldbevisibleina3inchtelescope,anda3metresatellite wouldbevisibletothenakedeye.Thisledtoanotherflurryofactivitybyamateurastronomers,butagainthesearchprovedfruitless. ScientistsbelievethatitispossiblefortheEarthtohaveothernaturalsatellites,butonlyforashorttime. MeteoroidspassingtheEarthandskimmingthroughtheupperatmospherecanloseenoughvelocitytogointoasatelliteorbit

aroundtheEarth.Butsincetheypasstheupperatmosphereateachperigee,theywillnotlastlong,maybeonlyoneortwo, possiblyahundredrevolutions(about150hours).Therearesomeindicationsthatsuchephemeralsatelliteshavebeen seenitisevenpossiblethatPetitsobserversdidseeone. 2 SinceWaltemathstime,otheradditionalmoonshavebeenreportedfromtimetotime.Forinstance,aGermanamateurastronomer,W. Spill,claimedtohaveobservedasecondmooncrossourfirstmoonsdiskon24May1926.Beginningin1953observationsofthe spacebetweentheMoonandtheEarthweremadeattheLowellObservatory,butthesearchesturnedupnothing.Sincethe1960s, AmericanscientistJohnBagbyhaspublishedseveralhotlydebatedpaperscontendingthattheEarthhascapturedchunksofspace debris,ofwhichsomehavedisintegrated,andothersarestillinorbit.SeveralnearEarthasteroidse.g.3753Cruithne(5kmacross) and2002AA29(about100macross)withhorseshoeorbitscanbeconsideredcompanionsofEartheventhoughtheydonotorbitit directly. 3 AnotherpossibilityisthattheMoonitselfmayhavenaturalsatellitesorbitingit,but,despiteseveralsearches,nonehavebeenfound. ScientistsbelievethatduetotheMoonsunevengravityfieldanylunarsatellitewillcrashintoitafterafewyearsorpossiblyadecade. LikeJupiter,theMoonmighthaveTrojansatellites,i.e.secondarysatellitesinthelunarorbit,travelling60aheadoforbehindtheMoon (theselocationsbeinggravitationallystable).Sincethelate1950s,evidenceforcloudsofdustparticles(visibleasfaintpatchesoflight)in thesepositionshasbeendetected.In1990theywerefoundtobeafewdegreesinapparentdiameter,andtowanderupto10away fromtheTrojanpoint.Theyareveryhardtodetectandtodistinguishfromthezodiacallight,inparticularthegegenschein. 4 WaltemathsobservationsgeneratedinterestinLilithamongastrologers.In1918anastrologercallinghimselfSepharial(hisrealname wasWalterGornold,aonetimetheosophistandpupilofH.P.Blavatsky 5)namedthismoonLilith,afterAdamsfirstdemonicwifein Hebrewmythology.LikeWaltemath,heconsideredittobesoblackandnonreflectivethatitwasinvisiblemostofthetime,andthatitonly becamevisiblewhencrossingthesolardiskorinoppositiontotheSun.HeconstructedanephemerisofLilith(i.e.itscelestial coordinates),basedonWaltemathsresearch.HeconsideredLilithtohaveaboutthesamemassastheMoon,butscientistsobjectthat anysuchsatellite,evenifnotdirectlyvisible,wouldrevealitspresencebyperturbingtheEarthsmotion.OneofSepharialsfollowers concludedthatitwasprobablyjustadustcloudofvaryingdensity. SepharialsLilithisstillusedbysomeastrologerswhencastinghoroscopes.Infact,inmodernastrologythenameLilithisgiventofour differentastronomicalentities: 6 1.DarkMoonLilithistheEarthssecondmoonaspostulatedbyWaltemathandSepharial.Itissaidtohaveadiameteraboutonequarter oftheMoons,andtoorbittheEarthatthreetimesthedistanceoftheMoon,withageocentricperiodof119days.Someastrologers adheretoWaltemathsoriginalcalculations,whileothersusetheephemeriscalculatedbySepharialorDelphineJay( InterpretingLilith , 1981).ManyastrologersbelieveLilithsexistencehasbeendisprovedbyscience,anditiscertainlytruethatasecondlargemoon orbitingtheEarthwouldhavebeendiscoveredbynow ifitwereanordinaryphysicalobject . 2.BlackMoonLilithisnotacelestialobjectbutanabstract,geometricpoint.Anellipsehastwofocalpoints:inthecaseoftheMoons orbit,theEarthislocatedatoneofthefocalpointsandBlackMoonLilithisconsideredtobeeithertheotherfocalpoint(about36,000km fromtheEarth),ortheapogeeoftheMoonsorbit,bothpointslyinginthesamedirectionfromtheEarth. 7BlackMoonLilithiscommonly usedinmainlandEurope,anditsuseintheUSandUKisincreasing.
