Columbus Cougars Boys Basketball

Cougars return to the floor with depth, determination
By Ron Faust Special to the News The 2011-12 was not a typical year for the Columbus Cougar boys. For the first time in 18 seasons the Cougars failed to qualify for the divisional tournament as the boys finished 10-11 under first year coach Corey Hansen. Ask Hansen about last year and he simply says the transition is over. Time to get after it. Hansen returns a deep and solid core to do just that. Included are returning senior starters Tyler Ostrum (5foot-9) and Brady Wiggs (5-foot-9). Fellow senior Daniel Wiggs (6-foot-2) was in the varsity rotation a year ago and will likely be a starter. Also back in uniform is 6-foot-4-inch senior Anthony Panella who will provide much needed height to the team. The balance of the varsity will come from a group that includes seniors Job Brooks (5-foot-9), Marshall Corriz (5-foot9), Josiah Redman (5-foot-11); juniors Peyton Gross (5-foot-11), Philip Holten (5-foot-11), Lane France (5-foot-9); and sophomores Kade Osborne (6-foot) and Trey Ostrum (5-foot-7). Most picked up some varsity experience a year ago. Hansen will be assisted by coaches Mark Ranstrom and Jay Forseth.

Columbus Cougars Girls Basketball Lady Cougars return with young team
By Ron Faust Special to the News To say the Columbus Cougar girls are a young team in 2012-13 is a stretch. Columbus graduated seven seniors from last years 19-9 squad that won the 4B district championship and missed out on the third place trophy at the state tournament by a single bucket. Of the 16 girls out for hoops, returning coach Ted Miller has but one senior in 5-foot-11-inch starter Ashtyn Aumueller, who has fully-recovered from her knee injury suffered at last years district tournament. Joining Aumueller will be the programs only representative from the junior class, 5-foot-9inch Cierra Johannes. The rest of the varsity squad is expected to be developed from a strong sophomore contingent that includes 5-foot-8inch Rachael Ault - who became a key cog in last years post-season run - and 5-foot-9-inch Courtney Martinez, who also picked up valuable varsity experience last year. Other sophomores Photo by Ardona Robbins expected to be in the varsity mix are 5-foot-7inch Kyla Rouane, 5-foot-5-inch Madi Sindelar, 5-foot-8-inch Hailey Campbell, 5-foot-4-inch Taylor Edwards, and 5-foot-5-inch Kari Ruffato. Helping nurse this young team through its inevitable growing pains will be junior varsity coach Kay Faust, and long-time varsity coach Paul Barta who re-enters the coaching ranks as the girls C-squad coach. The boys and girls schedules are identical throughout the year and begin with the Manhattan tournament Dec.7-8. The teams dont play at home until Dec. 21 when they host Joliet.

From Coach Neumann:

First year Matt Neumann is a graduate of Geyser High School and a soon-to-be graduate of Rocky Mountain College, where he played basketball for the Battlin Bears. I got the job about a week before the season and am just really starting to get to know the kids. I am pleased to say I have inherited a hard working group of guys. They are all very coachable and come to practice every day ready to listen, learn, and get better. We are led by seniors Chase Branstetter, Bordy Henning, Ben Madsen, Pj Post, and Garth Webster. They are a good group of leaders and make sure the work ethic is always there for the underclassmen. I expect to be competitive in each and every game bringing our best effort throughout the season.

From Coach Federico:

First-year coach Jason Federico has spent the last 11 years coaching boys basketball and football at Billings Senior High School , as well as one-year stint in Custer. When I was awarded this position this summer I was able to experience the enthusiasm of this team immediately. Calling his seniors the nucleus of the team, Federico feels strongly they will influence success and lead by example. This is a great group of hard working and intelligent young ladies. We have one lonely junior but she is a pesty one, (defensively) Brianna Gray. The sophomore class consists of multiple talented guards and post players starting with Morgan Popp, Kate Madsen, Magge Snow, Bailie Anderson, Mackenzie Bernhardt, and Mariah Ray. I really think that a couple of the freshman will influence the upperclassmen by their basketball skills, and athletic ability. They are Hailee Gregerson, Grace Jacquot, Kelsying Ford, Kayla Braden, and Olivia Grimes. We will bring a high intensity defense every night with some continuity on offense and a focus on rebounding. Our goal is to make our opponent respect our will to win.

It is difficult to predict the outcome of this upcoming season, however, I think the Renegades have a legitimate chance of moving a long ways up the chart from where we finished a year ago. I think the recent state appearances of our football and volleyball teams has helped foster a winning attitude in Renegade athletics and should carry over. We have some good quality players returning and we are expecting to be competitive in our conference.
