Overarching Questions: 1. Why are plants and animals important? Essential Questions: 1. What do plants need in order to survive? 2. How does a plant use its different parts to help it live? 3. Why cant all animals live in the same place? 4. What are characteristics of animal groups? Enduring Understandings: Students will understand that: 1. Plants need: air, water, light, and nutrients. 2. Functions of a plant: -roots-holding plants in place and absorbing water; -seeds- making new plants; -leaves-making food for plants; -stems-keeps plants upright and transports materials up and down the plant. 3. Animals need: air, water, food, and shelter. 4. Animals have different physical characteristics: body coverings-hair, fur, feathers, scales, and shells; body shape; movement-walking, crawling, flying, swimming.

Stage Two Assessment Evidence


Performance Task:
One animal and plant poster per student.

Other Evidence: Participation in class activities.

Stage Three Learning Plan (Lessons take place during the library time for the class. Days are one week apart.)
Day One 1. Introduction to plants and animals through storytelling. 2. Introduce the following books to the students: Why is the Grass Green? by Chris Arvetis and Carole Palmer The Magic School Bus: Plants Seeds: A Book About How Living Things Grow by Patricia Relf Finding Out About Animals by Francis A. Alder Fur, Feathers, and Flippers by Patricia Lauber 3. Read Grow by Patricia Relf 1. Probe for background knowledge about plants. (students have been learning about them in their classes and this lesson serves as a review) 2. Introduce Brain Pop Jr. video and watch until the section about What do Flowers Do? http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/plants/partsofaplant/ 3. Complete the review quiz through Brain Pop Jr. 4. Props will then be used to dress the students, and media specialist, up as the different parts of a plant. 5. Have students locate the different parts of a plant and recognize the necessities using the poster. (will have to look to see if there is time) 6. Students will then proceed to check out books for the week. 1. Probe for background knowledge about animals. (students have been learning about them in their classes and this lesson serves as a review) 2. Introduce Brain Pop Jr. video and watch. http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/animals/classifyinganimals/ 3. Guide student through the Critter Craze Game.
