Recycling saves tax dollars! Every ton of trash costs the city $32, but recycling is free! Newport residents threw away 7,485 tons of trash and recycled 2,204 tons curbside in fiscal year 2012. We recycled 22.7% of our waste. RI state law requires us to recycle 35% of our waste. Newport avoided $70,528 in tipping fees by recycling 2,204 tons of material in FY12.
Everything dropped off for recycling to the Clean City Program such as electronic waste, books, clothing, motor oil, cooking oil, scrap metal, or recycled at one of our Recycling Day events, contributes to the citys diversion rate. RI state law requires all municipalities to divert 50% of their waste. With your help, we diverted over one third of our material (36%) which was reused or recycled, avoiding a life in the landfill! Thank you for doing your part by reducing, reusing and recycling as much as possible! We cant do it without you!
Thank you, Newport, for helping us recycle more & more each year!
