ADVC Basic Protection Setting Exercises

Create a WSOS switchgear file for your controller with two protection groups. Working off-line, configure the file you just created to include the settings in the following exercises: Exercise No 1 Make Group B the active protection group. Exercise No 2 Apply the following Global Protection settings: Phase Setting Current = 150 Amps Earth Setting Current = 30 Amps SEF Trip Current = 5 Amps Exercise No 3 Configure the protection settings such that if a permanent Earth Fault occurs, the first automatic reclose will occur in 5 seconds, followed by a reclose time of 20 seconds for the second trip and lockout after the third trip. Exercise No 4 Configure the Phase Overcurrent protection such that for a fault level of 750 Amps, the tripping times are as follows: Trip No Trip 1 Trip 2 Trip 3 Trip 4 Protection Curve IEC Standard Inverse Curve IEC Extremely Inverse Curve Any curve Trip not active Tripping Time 0.428s 3.5s 0.2s

Exercise No 5 Configure the Earth Fault protection such that for fault levels as shown, the tripping times are as follows: Trip No Trip 1 Trip 2 Trip 3 Trip 4 Protection Curve IEEE Moderately Inverse IEEE Very Inverse IEEE Extremely Inverse Trip not active. Fault Level 300 Amps <300 Amps >300 Amps <300 Amps >300 Amps Tripping Time 0.605s as per formulae 0.69s as per formulae 0.01s

Exercise No 6 Configure the reset curves for all active Phase and Earth trips to match the pickup curves. Exercise No 7 Configure the protection to start to reset when the current falls below 95% of the pickup level. Exercise No 8 Configure the protection settings such that if an Earth Fault pickup occurs when Auto Reclose is OFF, the recloser will trip instantaneously. Exercise No 9 Configure the protection settings such that although the Earth Trip Current Setting is 30 Amps, an Earth Fault protection trip will not occur when the earth current is less than 36 Amps.

Exercise No 10 Apply settings such that an SEF fault will always cause the ACR to trip in 10s when: Trips to Lockout = 3 SEF Trips to Lockout = 1 Exercise No 11 Apply the appropriate modifiers to the Phase protection curves such that an instantaneous trip should occur if there is a phase fault on the feeder between the recloser and the next protection device. N.B. The maximum short circuit current at the next protection device is 3000 Amps Exercise No 12 Go on-line to your controller and write the settings in your off-line file. Exercise No 13 Use Waveform Generation to simulate the faults described in exercises 4 and 5 and check the tripping times from events recorded in the Event Log. Exercise No 14 On successful completion of the previous exercise, read the switchgear settings from the controller and go off-line.

Protection Features Activities (1 of 4)

Sequence Control 1. 2. 3. 4. Select Sequence Control and Auto Reclose ON on your controller. Run the Waveform Generator to simulate balanced 3 phase load conditions. Increase the current in one phase to simulate a low level fault but restore load conditions before a trip occurs. Check that a sequence advance has occurred and is followed by a sequence reset.

Live Load Blocking 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Open the recloser and select Live Load Blocking ON. Run the Waveform Generator and simulate 3 phase voltages greater than the Live Line Threshold setting on the Source side. Check that the recloser can be closed and opened. Change the Power Direction to the alternate setting. Check that a panel close request is blocked and the appropriate events are logged.

Schneider Electric < AUTHOR > <DATE>

Protection Features Activities (2 of 4)

Dead Lockout 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Close the recloser and select Dead Lockout and Auto Reclose ON, 4 trips to lockout. Run the Waveform Generator to simulate a balanced 3 phase system at unity pf. Apply a fault and check that the recloser goes through to lockout as configured. Remove the voltages from the Waveform Generator values, close the recloser and reapply 3 phase load current only. Reapply the fault and check that the recloser goes directly to lockout after the first trip with Lockout and Dead Lockout events logged. High Current Lockout Close the recloser and select High Current Lockout and Auto Reclose ON, 4 trips to lockout. Run the Waveform Generator to simulate balanced 3 phase load currents. Apply a fault just below the level of the HCL current setting to cause a trip and start an auto reclose sequence. During the second reclose time, increase the fault current to more than the HCL current setting and check that the recloser goes to lockout after the third trip. Check that the Event Log contains records to indicate that lockout was caused by the High Current Lockout feature.

Protection Features Activities (3 of 4)

Inrush Restraint 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Select Auto Reclose OFF and check that the Single Shot setting is an IEC255 Standard Inverse curve. Close the switch and run Waveform Generation to simulate system voltage on the source side with zero current. Apply a x 5 phase fault and check that the tripping time is > 4.2s. Select Inrush Restraint ON with settings of: IR Time = 4.0s and IR Multiplier = x 4.0. Repeat steps 2 and 3 and check that the same tripping time occurs. (The fault level is too high to be masked by inrush) Change the Inrush Restraint settings to: IR Time = 5.0s and IR Multiplier = x 6.0 Repeat steps 2 and 3 and check that a pickup occurs as soon as the Inrush timer expires and that a trip occurs immediately. (The fault is masked by inrush but times out during the inrush period.) Change the Inrush Restraint settings to: IR Time = 4.0s and IR Multiplier = x 6.0 Repeat steps 2 and 3 and check that although pickup does not occur until the IR timer expires, protection timing has been running since the fault was applied. (The fault is initially masked but persists past the inrush time and trips in the normal time.)

Protection Features Activities (4 of 4)

Cold Load Pickup 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Select Cold Load Pickup ON with the default settings of: Cold Load Time = 120 min and Cold Load Multiplier = 2.0. Change the CLP status on your controller to read CLP 60 min x 2.1 Mult by altering the Cold Load Multiplier setting. Check that the Operational Cold Load time is increasing while there is no load current. Use the Waveform Generator to simulate 3 phase load current and check that the Operational Cold Load time decreases. Increase the simulated current in one phase until a pickup event is logged. Check that the pickup event occurred when the applied current / setting current was equal to the Operational Cold Load Multiplier..
