2013 Marks 15 Years of Shopwise

The year 2013 marks another milestone for the company as Shopwise celebrates 15 years of retail service to the Philippine market. This issue pays tribute to the many past and present successes of Shopwise, and the company as a whole. We begin with a special message from DVT, as shared with everyone, in commemoration of the Shopwise Thanksgiving Celebration held last April 11, and the successful evening that was I enjoyed very much our party last night. We are not just retailers we are also warriors spending most of our time and energy working hard and fighting battles. It was truly a pleasure to pause for a while and spend a relaxing evening together as one family. I think we should try to do this more often; we should go out of our way to stay connected on a personal level like last night, especially as we become a bigger and bigger company. It was a simple and meaningful celebration. Brothers and sisters, we have so many reasons to celebrate. I am proud of the 11% growth that you were able to produce last year. Shopwise is now a P12 billion company that provides full time employment to over 2,000 people and their families. This does not include the thousands of other employees we have that are disers, or contractuals, etc. We also have by far the lowest turnover in our industry. Our employees stay with the company for years and

years. WE have about 300 officers; over half of these officers came from the ranks. Shopwise is nurturing from within. What an awesome achievement! This is QUALITY FOR ALL employees in action. And yet what fills me with pride is not only WHAT you have done; but even more importantly HOW you have done it. What makes Shopwise special are the QUALITIES I would associate with a GOOD and LOVING Father. Like a good and loving father, you have a lot of STAMINA. You work endlessly, quietly and many times thanklessly. Like a good father, you are AMBITIOUS, you have and pursue

great dreams not for your own good but for the greatness of your family. Like a good father, have INTEGRITY. You know that whatever you do to your reputation, good or bad, passes on to your children. Like a good father, you are HUMBLE and FAITHFUL. Many times, you sacrifice the ME for the WE. You are the FATHER not only of the employees that work in Shopwise, but also of the whole RSCI. 3,700 employees need you to be a good and strong father. Once upon a time Rustans was a damsel in distress. You saved her at a very heavy price of P2.2 billion, and now she is in, and of herself, a beautiful, powerful wife and equal partner. You also have a

child in WELLCOME, with the potential to be the greatest member of our family ever; for as long as this child has your support and guidance. RSCI is one family; like a good Father, Shopwise is a pillar of strength, major breadwinner, and protector. Your achievements are extraordinary already; but they pale in comparison to the great future that lies ahead of us especially since we are now also part of the Dairy Farm Group. Happy 15th! You have fought and won many battles, enriched many lives over 15 years. May you continue to be amongst the strong who strengthen the weak.

In 1998, Shopwise entered the Philippine retail scene as the newest shopping format to hit the metro. It adapted a European style hypermarket format, virtually unknown to the Filipino market. Since it opened 15 years ago, it has been hailed and recognized as the best Hypermarket in the country, winning the Outstanding Retail Award twice in this category in 2005 and 2011. In 2012, Shopwise was inducted into the prestigious Outstanding Filipino Retailers Hall of Fame in recognition for being the preferred onestop shopping destination for fulfilling the basic needs of the Filipino family. Dubbed as the Oscars of the Retail Industry, the annual gathering of the biggest names and key players in the Philippine retail industry is organized by the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The institution recognizes Filipino companies who have epitomized the model of a successful retailer in terms of growth and good ethical business practices.

camera, action! Thats what was heard all throughout the 1 shooting day of the Yes to Success commercial. That sunny morning of September 2011 brought together a number of RSCI employees cast to portray different personalities embodying our values in our first ever in-house commercial. Some were clutsy, some were stiff, others nervous and some, like Kerwin, were just naturalborn stars. What was it like being a part of this activity? What was it like being a star for a day? What did they feel having their faces splattered all over our offices? Lets hear it from the stars of the YTS commercial themselves

Lights,

levels did not wane (well also because this was the only chance for us to be seen on TV!) The whole program made the employees aware of the simple things we do to make the organization successful. Like in the TVC, each actor/actress played a role in coming up with one message. Internal talents were used to convey a very important message and, the goal was achieved simply because these employees said YES!
Joseph Fuertes Store Manager RSF Ayala, Cebu

Honestly, I really don't know why I was chosen. Bakit nga ba? Nevertheless, I felt privileged to be part of this very important campaign. I believe that these values are very important to our organization and I was glad to be part in conveying these values to everyone. Ang hirap pala to be the leading man. Naks! Seriously though, the experience taught me to be patient due to several takes...hehehe, and patience is indeed a virtue. The more you concentrate and focus on your role, the less mistakes you make. The shoot took the whole day. People were very tired, but patient, and the performance

role, I was so proud and honored to have been casted for the commercial. Feeling artista ako noong nilalagyan ako ng makeup! I think I was chosen because I have been in the company long, and have climbed the ladder to my current position as Store Head of RSF Ayala, Cebu. I learned from the commercial that there is always someone watching. That you always have to be honest, even if others will not, and cannot. Eugene Guillermo AVP Corporate Audit My first reaction was disbelief. Me, star in a TVC? I cant act, is this for real? Who will I suffer this with? What role will I play? I was happy to see that I was assigned to the integrity segment as a Store Manager, chiding the Chef who was trying to eat merchandise pastry covertly while on duty. It was like being true to my real life work as an Auditor. One of my segments was the last to be shot. Since this was in the bakery section, we had to wait for the store to close. Everyone was dead tired and no longer camera-pretty. It took more than 10 takes before we got everything perfect. I will never aspire to be a movie star anymore, hahaha! Seriously, the YTS program definitely boosted the morale of the organization and made us understand the values that we should

embody in our work and daily lives. These values will lead us to succeed as a company and as an individual. I think this was a fun, creative way of preaching these. I am thankful that in my own little way, I was able to contribute in making our core values known to the organization.

Theyre At It Again! An Update on our Shopwise Tri-Team

5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Bang! And they were off. The Shopwise Tri Team was at it again. This time, it was for the Tri-United Race held in Subic Bay last March 10, 2013. Hundreds of swimmers made their way through the 20 kilometer swim in Dungaree Beach. We had 2 swimmers in the water Toto Britanico doing a solo triathlon, and Emer de Guzman, representing the relay team. After a 31:24 minute swim, Emer was quickly out of the water, then tapped Kerwin to start the bike race. Toto emerged shortly after at 42:59 minutes he was then off on the bike. Kerwin came in at 1:29:07, tapped Frances and she was off on a 10 kilometer run under the sweltering heat. Toto finished the bike leg at 1:25:25, parked his bike, and ran the final leg of the race. We, the team who stayed behind, moved closer to the fin-

ish line to get a better view. The race required 2 loops at the 5 kilometer mark. Frances came in first, shortly followed by Toto he narrowed the gap. Then sirens went off an ambulance sped away. What happened?, we thought, but no
