S7 Communication via Profibus CPs with BSEND / BRECEIVE and Job References

Advantages of this solution Independent of bus hardware. (I.e., this solution can be used for PB / IE / MPI without code modifications (if supported)) Applicable to all S7 data areas such as inputs, outputs, data areas, times or counters. The S7 protocol is the only protocol which is able to transfer data amounts of this size (up to 64 Kbytes in the S7 400) in one job. The main programming / configuring effort is insignificant; the reason for this is, among other things, the fact that the level 7 protocol itself provides the acknowledgement of the data records.

An alternative to PROFIBUS used in this application is Industrial Ethernet also due to a higher data throughput (10 / 100 MBit). In comparison with PROFIBUS used in this application, the only negative aspect of Industrial Ethernet is the lack of deterministics. Positive aspects of Industrial Ethernet: The high data throughput due to 10 / 100 MBit full / half-duplex. An increased data performance due to a larger number of data per message frame. A large number of stations on the bus. Easy installation with common bus components. Different communications service When using Ethernet, an alternative to the selected S7 protocol is the use of one of the following level 4 protocols: ISO Transport TCP protocol ISO on TCP protocol (RFC 1006)

The data amounts (maximum of 8Kbytes) are similar to the data amounts of the S7 protocol; the disadvantage of these protocols is the fact that they can only be used in Ethernet. Furthermore, there is no acknowledgement on the application layer in the protocols listed above; acknowledgements exist only on the transport layer. To obtain an application acknowledgement, it would be required to implement it with significant effort. Particularly the level 4 protocol FDL with SDA service has to be mentioned as an alternative protocol in Profibus.
Note: An application providing more detailed information on this topic is available within the scope of the e-infoshop Communication with automation systems. The application also includes further approaches in the FDL area.
