Hello my name is Marcus and I will be telling you about Afghanistans war, food, population and much more I hope you enjoy Afghanistan is a very diverse country, it is located in the northern hemisphere and its a land locked country with a lot of mountains with not many main roads. The size of Afghanistan is 647,500 square km. Afghanistans largest neighbours are Pakistan to the east and Iran to the west and its other neighbours are Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan

2. War:
There is a war going on right now The War in Afghanistan began on 7 The U.S. armed forces started attacking Al Qaeda terrorisst in Afghanistan on October 2001 in response to the 9 11 attacks. The Americans were devastated about the attacks that took place on September 11th 2001, when a group of terrorists know as Al Qaeda launched a suicide plane attack on the Twin Towers in New York city and attempted to crash into the White house and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. The reason why the planes didnt crash into ether of those buildings is because the passengers on these flights managed to divert the planes away from their targets. However all planes crashed and there were no survivors.

3. Cities
The population of Afghanistan is 35M this was predicted in 2011 The capital city of Afghanistan is Kabul: pop 1,925,548 The city is very populated with the houses even being built up on the mountain sides

4. Festivals
Ashura

During the month of Musharram Afghansremember the martyrdom of Imam Hussain the grandson of Prophet Mohammed. Ashura marks the 10th day of the month-long mourning for this prophet.
Nau Roz

This festival is held between January and March. Nau Roz is the most popular of all the festivals in Afghanistan, Farmers express joy for lots of produce from the land and people celebrate with music and dance. It is also during the Nau Roz or New Year festival that buzkashi matches or tournaments are held. Buzkashi is a brutal game played on horse back. Similar to polo that is played with out a polo club and ball. Instead, Buzkashi is played with a headless goat carcass that the riders try to throw into the goals, this avent can last for days.
Jeshyn-Afghan Day

The independence day of Afghanistan takes place on August 19, commemorating the end of British control over the foreign affairs of the country.
Ramadan

Ramadan is one of the most sacred traditions of the Islamic faith. It usually takes place between September and November each year, depending on the calendar. Afghans dont eat or drink anything during the day and can only eat while the sun is down and almost all restaurants and businesses are closed between sun rise and sun set.

5. Rugs
Afghanistan is world famous for its hand woven rugs some of which my mum has. These rugs are named after local Afghan towns and woven in Herat. The people of this area weave rugs to earn money so they can support their families.

6. Food
One of the most favourite dishes for the afghans is Qabli Pulao. Qabli Pulao is steamed rice with bits of chopped raisins and carrot. It is mostly served with lamb, different types of Qabli Pulao are also available in different regions of Afghanistan. Lamb Kebabs are favoured in Afghanistan, they mostly have naan bread served on the side and normally served with rice. You will find different variations of meats fillers such as Kofta, lamb chops, ground beef, ribs and chicken. as afghans are Muslims they dont eat pig.

7. Sport
The most popular sport played all over the country is soccer, Afghans call it football. They also enjoy playing cricket. There are many more sports that the Afghans play.

8. Flora and Fauna


Afghanistans nature is very beautiful; it has many mountains with lots of rivers and water courses. There are more than 3,000 plant species and there are over 100 species of birds. Some of the more common fauna in Afghanistan is bears, wolves, foxes, bats and the golden jackals. The golden jackal is closely related to the grey wolf and the coyote.

9. Education
Girls in Afghanistan a free to go to school but an education is not encouraged, the Afghans believe that girls should stay at home. Some schools are too poor to afford a building so they teach out on the street. The age that most children start school is around 7 years old. They have a large amount of Universities and offer a very good education system.

10. Government
Afghanistan is an Islamic republic government, currently lead by Hamid Karzai the president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai has been leading since the late 2001. The nation has three branches of government and the country is divided into 34 areas.

11. National Flag


The flag colours are black red and green and in the middle of the red there is the Afghan code of arms.
