editorial
Dear readers,
what comes into your mind when you think
of the Baltic Sea Region: endless beaches,
sand dunes, birch forests, castles and churches
or even amber? Countries around the Baltic
Sea share a great variety of natural and cultural
resources as well as a long common history.
The area, however, is still not well recognised as
one common region outside its borders. In the
framework of the EU-funded project AGORA 2.0
we aim to improve the common identity of the
Baltic Sea Region, based on its rich natural and
cultural treasures.
The f ve issues of the Treasures of the Baltic
Sea are our appetisers for you to raise your
awareness of the unique beauty of the Baltic Sea
Region by telling exciting stories and providing
short background information at a glance
that make you feel like visiting the region.
This issue will bring the fascinating world of
Red Brick Gothic in the Baltic Sea Region
closer to you.

For centuries, the inf uence of the Hanse-
atic League shaped life along the coasts
of the Baltic Sea and further inland.
In this region, the economy f ourished
in medieval times and civic consciousness
and identity arose. Until today, gates and
town houses, city halls and monasteries,
hall churches and basilicas bear witness
to power and prosperity of that time.
Each preserved structure or building
carries on the architectural traditions
and skills of its time. Taking into consider-
ation the age of the structures and their
durability despite constant use and
various tribulations over the centuries,
each preserved structure can be deemed
a masterpiece. The European Route of
Brick Gothic connects this cultural herit-
age 34 cities and regions in Denmark,
Germany and Poland and several partners
in Baltic States are your hosts.
Beyond Brick Gothic, there is a lot more to
discover by culture addicts, visitors seeking
recreation and time travellers: solitary ice
age landscapes, picturesque lakes, forests
and rivers, clif s, beaches and sand dunes,
coasts and wind-lashed shallow bays,
castles, ruins, palaces and manors from a
wide variety of eras. And a tower of a brick
church always looks out from behind some
trees or stands out against the cityscape.
The church is probably Gothic Brick
Gothic.
brick gothic
fascinating cultural
heritage
That is because Brick Gothic has left
its mark on the landscape. Religious and
secular buildings tell a common story,
characterised by upheavals from the 13th
century on: the golden age of the Hanse-
atic League, the founding of monasteries
and cities, the construction of castles
by knights orders, the signif cance of
the Baltic Sea in medieval Europe. The
following centuries brought many ups
and downs with times of prosperity and
of devastation. Many of the magnif cent
Brick Gothic monuments withstood these
tumultuous times. Yet it is only recently
that visitors have been able to experience,
along the European Route of Brick Goth-
ic, how cities and countries around the
Baltic Sea are interwoven with each other
due to their cultural history.
Bricks are indeed a common building
material from Denmark to Estonia,
but in architecture we f nd as many
dif erent solutions as there are buildings.
This is despite the fact that, for instance,
churches were constructed with the assis-
tance and under the guidance of German
master-builders not only in Germany, but
also across dif erent countries, including
Denmark, Poland and Estonia. Application
of bricks is not limited to walls and f ne
arches after all, burned clay was used to
make the terracotta sculptures for example
in the Tartu St. Johns Church, of which
over 1,000 have been preserved to this day.
The cultural heritage of Brick Gothic
is easily recognisable and an outstanding
characteristic of the region. It glows red
in the sun, is always visible, simple yet
grandiose, artistically accomplished,
and brimming with history and stories.
It always enchants visitors with its grand
and beautiful decor everywhere. Brick
Gothic structures outlived dozens of
religious and worldly leaders, are older
than the oldest universities, were models
for Caspar David Friedrich and Lyonel
Feininger. They are today the cultural
counterpoint to spas, cycling, golf, hiking
and aquatic sports.
Brick Gothic is a uniting motif in the Baltic
Sea region, underscoring our common
history and similar ways of thinking.
It is an inseparable part of our daily lives.

along the european
route of brick gothic...
The unique architectural style Brick Goth-
ic is a phenomenon, which is not only
omnipresent along the coasts of the Baltic
Sea, but also throughout the surround-
ing inland regions. This medieval, stony
cultural heritage can be found in Denmark,
in many parts of Poland and in Germany
all the way down to Berlin and the federal
states of Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and
Lower Saxony. Even in the Baltic countries,
southern Sweden and Russia Brick Gothic
is widely presented, each time with
charming regional characteristics.
In North-East Poland, in Olsztyn the visitor
will f nd for example the Gothic castle
of the Chapter of Warmia, where Nicolaus
Copernicus himself once resided and
researched. Several other well-preserved
medieval castles are located just around
the corner, most of them earlier castles of
the Teutonic Order. Olsztyn is also a gate
to Masuria, a region famous for its
thousand lakes. A fair way of lies the city
of Pock on the banks of Vistula River,
where history was made already before
the era of Brick Gothic. The steeples of
the cathedral, the Gothic castle and former
abbey tower above the city centre. Down
the Vistula River lies Toru, UNESCO World
Heritage Site with more than thousand
historical buildings, birthplace of Nicolaus
Copernicus and home of famous ginger-
bread pierniki. Besides the beautiful old
City Hall and plenty of Gothic churches,
the former city fortif cation is worth see-
ing. A couple of kilometres away, on the
Vistula River as well, Chemno of ers
its visitors an impression of a nearly com-
pletely preserved medieval town.
Brick Gothic as far as the eye can see.
This impression will be even extended
in Gdask, the lively metropolis in North-
ern Poland, birthplace of the legendary
Solidarity movement (Solidarno):
its St. Marys Church is the biggest Brick
Gothic church in whole world, and the
construction alone took around 150 years.

West of Gdask and only a bit southwards
from Darowo, the visitor reaches the
small town of Sawno. Here, a visit of the
imposing and majestic St. Marys Church
is a must. Further examples of beautiful
Brick Gothic architecture are the two town
gates. Next stop along the route will be
the city of Szczecin, where, after decades,
St. James Cathedral has now a new and
impressive steeple, reconstructed accord-
ing to the original model. Of course the
visitors have the opportunity to climb all
the way up to the tower or take the lift.
St. Peters and Pauls Church, on the other
hand, was erected under the inf uence
of the famous Brick Gothic architect
Hinrich Brunsberg, who was also active
in other places along the route, such as
in Brandenburg an der Havel. The Castle of
the Dukes of Pomerania and the hooked
terraces (Way Chrobrego) are worth
seeing, too. Near Szczecin lies Stargard
Szczeciski with its Mill Gate, built over
a river, representing a unique construction
in whole Europe. A further top sight in
town is St. Marys Cathedral, one of the
most beautiful Brick Gothic churches in
Poland with its stellar vaulted ceiling and
the completely preserved fortif cation.
Prenzlau in north-eastern Germany is
situated just a short distance to the west
from the River Oder on the German-Polish
border. St. Marys Church in the town
centre with its unusual twin spires can
already be seen from kilometres away.
The church has also famous ornate gables
on its eastern side. Worth visiting is also
the Dominican Monastery in Prenzlau.
Southwards the visitor will f nd the equally
famous St. Marys Church in the Kleist
Town Frankfurt (Oder), of which medieval
glass windows, known as the Illustrated
Bible, were returned from Russia a couple
of years ago. They were brought to Russia
after the Second World War as looted art.
A tip for passionate cyclists: try out the
long-distance cycling route Oder-Neie
through Frankfurt and along the beautiful
River Oder. The next stop will be the old
episcopal town Brandenburg an der Havel,
which is more than thousand years old
and blessed with an impressive cathedral
complex, St. Catherines Church, St. Pauls
Monastery, several gate towers and many
other interesting Brick Gothic buildings.
Since the town is located in the middle
of a beautiful lakeland area, it is a great
spot for hiking, cycling, sailing and canoe-

ing. Barely an hour away to the west the
steeples of the Hanseatic City of Stendal
stick out to the skies. In the 15th century,
Stendal became a f ourishing merchant
town in the Altmark Region. From those
prosperous times several buildings have
survived such as four medieval churches
with valuable interiors and two impressive
town gates, the Uenglingen and Tanger-
mnde Gate.
Also Lower-Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein
and Denmark participate with many
magnif cent buildings in the cultural
heritage of Brick Gothic. In the Hanseatic
City of Lneburg, located on the banks of
the River Ilmenau and prosperous through
its salt resources, Brick Gothic meets the
Brick Renaissance. However, particularly
the churches represent the pure classical
Brick Gothic style, while the Town Hall
is a mixture of many dif erent eras, and
at the same time one of the most valuable
buildings in Germany. Also the numerous
old houses with their charming, nowadays
already slightly asymmetric brick gables
from the times of Gothic or Renaissance
are unique. Nearby and nice to visit by
a bicycle tour, the impressive Cathedral
of St. Peter and Paul in Bardowick and
many beautiful Brick Gothic village
churches can be found, all of them one
of a kind. Further exceptional and precious
highlights are the six convents around
Lneburg: Lne, Walsrode, Wienhausen,
Medingen, Ebstorf and Isenhagen.
Even today they are not only jewels of
the Gothic and later architecture, but
active chapters of nuns, where visitors will
experience not only the buildings, but
also other details from the convent life.
The town of Buxtehude with its thousand-
year-old history lies in the famous region
Altes Land. The well-preserved Dutch-type
old waterways, the Fleth, the historical
downtown with St. Peters Church and the
majestic Floodgate are worth seeing. After
crossing the Elbe River and the Kieler Canal
up north, the visitor approaches signif cant
sites of the Vikings, passes by Hedeby and
Schlei, a narrow inlet of the Baltic Sea,
and reaches the episcopal town of Schles-
wig. Here, the Schleswig Cathedral with
its comprehensive medieval interior
decoration is without equal. Furthermore,
a walk across Holm, an old f shing village
at the Schlei shore, is a must. Situated
likewise at the shore of a narrow Baltic Sea
inlet, at Haderslev Fjord, lies the same-
named town Haderslev. The town centre
is also here perfectly preserved and in its
very centre stands a cathedral without
a tower, but with marvellous acoustics and
puristic interior. Remember to check out
the concert programme! From here fantas-
tic tours with boats can be made, too.
Also in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
Brick Gothic is omnipresent it is one of
the regions trademarks, together with the
beautiful nature and numerous castles and
manor houses. However, not only coastal
areas and towns are interesting.
In the heartland lies for example the
capital of the federal state, Schwerin,
known for its horticultural festival in 2010,
for its gorgeous castle, where the state
parliament has its seat, and for its cathe-
dral with 117 metres high tower. Only a
little bit southwards lies Parchim with its
interesting Town Hall a mixture of Gothic
and neo-Gothic as well as with two Brick
Gothic churches, where even the trusses
are open for visitors!
To the north-east of Schwerin on the other
hand, in the Barlach Town Gstrow, the
visitor will bump into a majestic Renais-
sance Castle, to an excellent preserved
St. Marys Parish Church, the Gstrow
Cathedral and to the works of Ernst
Barlach, who lived and worked in town
until his death in 1938. The Ernst Barlach
Museums are also an absolute must for all
Gstrow visitors. The trip continues to the
Hanseatic City of Wismar, a gem of Brick
Gothic and UNESCO World Heritage Site
with many interesting sights. Particularly
the two parish churches St. Nicholas and
Holy Spirit are very well preserved and in
function. In St. Nicholas one needs
to bend his neck backwards quite a dis-
tance to be able to see the vaulted ceiling
as a whole, since it is one of the highest
ones in entire world. Wismar is also an ide-
al starting point for small excursions into
the surrounding region. A very special one
of them leads to neighbouring Neukloster,
Wismar, Port with St. NicholasChurch
Bad Doberan, Doberan Minster
11
a cute village with a wonderfully preserved
monastery with a church, a provost's resi-
dence and a monastic park on a beautiful
lake. Furthermore, the village is nestled in
the midst of an amazing lake district and
the landscape around the town is distin-
guished by idyllic hills and meadows.
Situated a few kilometres southwards from
the famous seaside resort Heiligendamm
and a couple of metres away from the park
Kamp in the centre of Bad Doberan with
its classical buildings, lies the emblem
of the town, the unique Doberan Minster
and its annex with the charnel house and
further buildings. The Gothic minster,
a manifestation of highest technical
perfection, excellent preserved and with
an outstanding interior decoration, would
of er highlights even for a 24 hours tour!
Also in the Amber Town Ribnitz-Dam-
garten, located on the border between
Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania,
a famous Brick Gothic convent can be
found: the Clarissa Order Nunnery, which
is nowadays dedicated to amber. As such,
the town serves also as a wonderful gate-
way to Fischland-Darss-Zingst, a charming
peninsula in the Baltic Sea coast to where
the visitor can enjoy a fantastic view from
the tower of the Brick Gothic church
St. Marys at Ribnitz. Further to the east
the visitor will reach the Bay of Greifswald,
at which the old University and Hanseatic
City of Greifswald is located. Here, the old
f shing village Wieck with the famous ruins
of the Eldena Monastery, the wonderful
Pomeranian State Museum with several
originals of the German Romantic painter
Caspar David Friedrich, the second oldest
university in the Baltic Sea Region, and
three beautiful Brick Gothic churches invite
the guest to spend some more time in
town.
Further to the east lies the 750 years old
Ducal Town of Wolgast, a gateway to the
sunny Usedom Island and the birthplace
of the Romantic painter Philip Otto Runge.
For the restoration of sarcophagi from
the ducal epoch in Brick Gothic St. Peters
Church the church received the Europa
Nostra Award in 2010. A further Gothic
highlight is the St. Gertrudes Chapel,
which is situated a bit outside the beautiful
medieval town centre. Another gateway
to the Usedom Island is the Hanseatic City
of Anklam, the birthplace of the aviation
pioneer Otto Lilienthal. The town is situat-
ed on the idyllic Peene River as well as on
several long-distance cycling routes.
St. Marys Church, located directly on
the market place, counts as one of the
most beautiful Brick Gothic churches in
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Neubrandenburg, the so called City of Four
Gates, possesses probably one of the most
impressive medieval fortif cations in whole
Europe: the town wall with its four double
gates is a masterpiece of Brick Gothic.
Another place of interest is the Brick Gothic
St. Marys Church, which has been restored
to a modern concert hall with Europe-wide
remarkable aesthetics and acoustics.
A further superlative can be experienced
in neighbouring Burg Stargard with
same-named fortress complex with its 13
dif erent buildings. The fortress is also the
most northern hill castle in entire Germa-
ny and the oldest secular building in the
federal state. The town is surrounded by
the wonderful Feldberg Lake District.
Further scenic, historical, architectural
and medieval highlights are def nitely
the Brick Gothic rich Hanseatic City of Stral-
sund and the Island of Rgen. Stralsund
is proud of its three churches and many,
many other Brick Gothic buildings, which
go wonderfully together with pieces of the
modern architecture, such as the Ozeane-
um aquarium and the new Rgen Bridge.
It is obvious, that the town is also a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the other
side of the Rgen Bridge the classics of
the island are also tempting: the beautiful
nature, Baltic Sea spa towns, the White
Clif s and much more. In addition, in nearly
every town and village on the island a real
Brick Gothic pearl can be found such
as St. Marys Church in Bergen, the oldest
church on the island.

Vastseliina

TALLINN
The foundations for Vastseliina Episcopal
Castle, the strongest fortress in the region,
were laid in 1342 on the border betweenMe-
dieval Livonia and the Russian Pskov region.
As a crossing point of military and trade
routes, it was basically the boundary be-
tween the Western Catholic Church looking
to Rome and the Eastern Orthodox Church
looking to Constantinople. Despite being
built in an era when architectural beauty
was of secondary importance to defensive
structures, the Episcopal Castle became a
Gothic brickwork masterpiece in which local
red bricks were ingeniously combined with
yellowish limestone and grey quarry stone.
Following the miracle of the hovering White
Cross in 1453, validated by Pope Innocent
VI 1454, Vastseliina became a renowned
destination for pilgrims. Funds raised from
pilgrims enabled a development of the
Episcopal Castle until surrendering in 1558
to Ivan the Terrible. Subsequently, Vastse-
liina declined in importance until being
destroyed by the forces of Peter the Great
during the Great Northern War (17001721).
A modern visitor centre welcomes travellers
who can access the north-eastern tower and
the chapel and view the preserved ruins
of the cannon tower and the castles ef gy
of the White Cross.

and Brick Gothic highlights in Anklam are
the St. Nicholas Church, the Gable House
and the imposing 32 metres high Stone

Bad Doberan is set amongst dense beech

the town today above all the impressive

Gothic gem. The church interior has largely
escaped devastations and provides the
richest and most complete original deco-

anywhere in Europe. There are also a large
number of other Brick Gothic treasures
to be found in the monastery complex:
amongst them the Granary and Charnel

Join us on a voyage of discovery in Bran-
denburg an der Havel, distinguished by
its medieval heritage sites and unique
location in an idyllic region studded with
rivers and lakes. The tiny seed that later
grew into the town of Brandenburg an der
Havel was planted on an island in the Havel
River, where the castle of Slavic Hevelli
once stood. In 1150/1157, famous German
ruler Albrecht the Bear took possession of
the castle, and the foundation stone for
the cathedral was laid in 1165. The Old and
New Town emerged only a little later and
belonged to the most signif cant ones in
the Mark of Brandenburg for hundreds of
years. Today, with over 400 historic build-
ings, the town is one of the most important
medieval heritage sites in Germany. For ex-

In front of the gates of the big Hanseatic
brother Hamburg, on the edge of the
region Altes Land and amidst the blossoms
of the regions fruit trees live the 40,000
residents of Buxtehude. Even though the
town is fairytale charming, that does not

for visitors is the historical old town with
its small streets, its Fleth (a system of
narrow waterways), its beautiful old town

festival, a wine festival and the Christmas
Market see visitors throng the streets of
the town centre.

culture will f nd several wonderful Brick
Gothic buildings in Buxtehude. Prominent

uniVersity town &
hanseatic city of greifswald
The University Town and Hanseatic City
of Greifswald lies between Germanys
biggest islands Rgen and Usedom on
the shallow Bay of Greifswald. Besides
the Hanseatic League, a crucial impulse
for the development of the town was the
establishment of the university in 1456.
Today, the Ernst Moritz Arndt University
of Greifswald is home to well over 12,000
students and a centre of social and public
life in town. Furthermore, Greifswald be-
came nearly world famous through its son
Caspar David Friedrich, one of the most
prominent Romantic painters. He realised
a large number of paintings that featured
the Ruins of the Brick Gothic Monastery
Eldena.
Even today, the three churches St. Mary,
St. Nicholas and St. James and several
other Brick Gothic buildings in the Old
Town hark back to the golden days of me-
dieval Greifswald. Also the gable houses in
the market place are wonderful examples
of Brick Gothic and lend the town a special
charm.

Bardowick near Lneburg is one of the
oldest towns in northern Germany, and
was a renowned trading town during the
Middle Ages, only to be later destroyed by
Henry the Lion. Even today, the village cen-
tre attests to the remarkable history, with
the mighty Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul
right in the centre. A further Brick Gothic
highlight is the building complex around
St. Nicholas Chapel, a former leprosarium.
The area, which takes both the charac-
teristics of the marshland and the sandy,
hilly heathland, is also recommendable for
cycling tours.
The Hanseatic City of Lneburg is sur-

conVents
around lneburg
Even today, the six convents around
Lneburg bear witness to the high con-
centration of monasteries in the former
Principality of Lneburg. The oldest of
them was founded in Walsrode before 986.
Later on, further convents were founded in
Ebstorf (ca. 1160), Lne (1172), Wienhausen
(ca. 1230), Medingen (1241) and Isenha-
gen (1243). Ebstorf, Lne and later also
Walsrode followed the Rule of St. Benedict,
whereas Medingen, Wienhausen and
Isenhagen were Cistercian convents. The
Convents around Lneburg are not only
interesting due to their buildings, but also
since they have been continuously active
throughout the centuries and the religious
orders of the Middle Ages have survived as
evangelic convents. Besides the impressive
Brick Gothic and newer architecture, sever-
al medieval and early modern decorative
items and furniture have been preserved:
the tapestries in Wienhausen and Lne,
embroideries in Ebstorf, Lne, Isenhagen
and Wienhausen, the statue of Christ from
ca. 1500 in Wienhausen and abbess's staf

Chemnos gems include: the chessboard

Today, visitors can admire the works of

situated on the banks of the River Oder, ca.
65 kilometres away from the Baltic coast.
The city comprises a total of 301 square
kilometres, but only one third of which is
occupied by built-up areas. The other parts
cover large water surfaces such as Lake

A long and chequered past has ensured

one of the most impressive sights is the
Brick Gothic St. James Cathedral, which
got back its spire in 2009 according to

toru
The former Hanseatic City of Toru was
situated at the intersection of important
trade routes during the Middle Ages, a
fact that contributed to its rapid rise to
prominence and wealth. The traces of
those bygone days can still be seen by
visitors strolling through the old city
centre: for centuries, nothing has really
changed. Even today, you can check out
Torus Gothic churches, old storehouses
used for new purposes in the present
and ornate houses once serving the local
patriarchy. Torus Old Town survived the
Second World War virtually unscathed; as
such, over 1,000 historical buildings will
charm the present-day visitor. The city is
particularly rich in Brick Gothic treasures.
Highlights are the Old City Hall, Coperni-

Church, St. James Church as well as the
Ruins of the Teutonic Knight's Castle and
several beautiful city gates. No wonder

Allenburg, Allenau, Friedland, Mhlhausen

particularly interesting.
The Brick Gothic Cathedral in Kaliningrad,
built in 1380, is located on the Kant Island
and was the main Lutheran church of
Prussia. Furthermore, the largest organ
in Europe can be found here. The striking
clock was set on its tower in 1640, and the
organ was installed in 1695. A burial vault
in which professors were buried from 1558
on, among them was Immanuel Kant,
linked the Cathedral and the University.
The Cathedral was destroyed during World
War II, and the restoration took place from
1994 to 2007. The Wallenrod library, estab-

organ was also reconstructed. Nowadays,

What is the aim of a pilgrimage?
The aim of pilgrimage lies primarily within
the pilgrim. On journeys outside the
dimensions of everyday life, pilgrims can
open their souls, f nd the face of God in
them and experience more profoundly
whatever is present, both corporeally and
spiritually. Opening their eyes enables
pilgrims not only to become aware of but
also to experience spiritual values.
Using the Middle Ages as an example,
Dick Harrison explains: It is, in fact, the
unknown environment that is suitable for
a pilgrim coming from afar. In other words
the pilgrim leaves its familiar micro
cosmos and enters the Christian macro
cosmos. Tourists living in the modern

of brick gothic
by bike from denmark to the baltic states
For centuries, the inf uence of the Hanse-
atic League shaped life along the coasts of
the Baltic Sea and further inland. In this re-
gion, the economy f ourished in medieval
times and civic consciousness and identity
arose. Brick Gothic churches, monasteries,
town halls, castles, town gates and walls
bear witness to power and prosperity of
that time to the present day. Each structure
is a masterpiece. The European Route of
Brick Gothic connects this cultural heritage
34 cities and regions in Denmark, Germa-
ny and Poland and several partners in the
Baltic States are your hosts.
The European Route of Brick Gothic is ideal
for shorter or longer cycling tours. Almost
every town and city is accessible through
and connected by long-distance cycle
routes across the borders. This relaxed way
of traveling opens up new perspectives,
and the rich natural and cultural heritage
can be enjoyed in great interaction.
Attractive cycle routes run especially along
the Baltic Sea coasts and several of them
form the cross-European EuroVelo routes*
EV 10 and 13. Starting in southern Europe
and leading up to the north, also EV 3,
7and 9 pass plenty of sites with marvellous
Brick Gothic buildings. These routes are
supplemented by numerous transregional
cycle routes. One of them is the Mecklen-
burg Lake District Cycle Route our route
number 2 which passes 27 locations with
Brick Gothic buildings. Simultaneously this
route links to a broad variety of Brick Gothic
highlights along or near the following inter-
national cycle routes: Berlin-Copenhagen
Cycle Route / EV 7 (e. g. Gstrow, Bad Dobe-
ran, Ribnitz-Damgarten, Nstved, Ringsted,
