In math class, your child will be learning to use units of capacity such as gallons and liters. Your child will also be learning how to add and subtract units of time such as minutes and seconds and calculate the amount of time between the start of an event and the end. In addition, your child will be learning to read temperatures in both Fahrenheit and Celsius degrees and calculate how much a temperature has risen or fallen. Here are activities you can do to get your child used to units of time and temperature.

As Time Goes By
Using light pencil strokes, draw hands on each clock to show whatever time you choose and circle A.M. or P.M. for each time. Ask your child to imagine a train ride starting at the first time and ending at the second time: how long a train ride would that be? Then erase the pencil strokes and draw a different pair of times.

Am I Getting Warmer?
Using light pencil strokes, shade each thermometer to show whatever degree reading you choose. Circle Fahrenheit or Celsius to show which type of thermometer you are using. Ask your child to imagine that one temperature reading was taken in the morning and the second in the afternoon. Ask your child whether the temperature has risen or fallen and by how many degrees.

Tambin aprender a sumar y restar unidades de tiempo, como minutos y segundos, y a calcular la cantidad de tiempo que pasa desde que comienza hasta que termina un suceso. Adems aprender a calcular temperaturas en grados Fahrenheit y Celsius, y a calcular cunto sube o baja la temperatura. Haga la siguiente actividad con su hijo(a) para que se acostumbre a las unidades de tiempo y temperatura.

El tiempo pasa
En cada reloj dibuje con lpiz las manecillas para mostrar la hora que usted quiera y encierre en un crculo A.M. o P.M. Pdale a su hijo(a) que imagine un viaje en tren que comienza a la hora que marca el reloj de la izquierda y que termina a la hora que marca el reloj de la derecha. Cunto tiempo durara el viaje? Luego borre las manecillas de los relojes y marque un par de horas diferentes. Despus de unas cuantas rondas, pdale a su hijo(a) que dibuje dos horas diferentes del da en los relojes para que usted resuelva el problema.
