REFRIGERATION SERVICE ENGINEERS SOCIETY M@ Lesson I6 Heat Pump Installation Procedures Si Titirinitl I Casas After completing this Lesson, you will be able to: Discuss the basic requirements for installing packaged and split-system air-to-air heat pump systems. Describe the best outdoor locations for heat pump units. Expiain the importance of adequate air flow at the indoor and outdoor sections of a heat pump. Expiain the need for refrigerant piping insulation. Describe heat pump installation practices for preventing water or snow from damaging the unit or the building. State guidelines for supporting electrical conduit, selecting low-voltage thermostat wiring, and locating electrical service disconnect switches. Explain proper procedures for locking out and tagging service disconnect switches when working on an open heat pump unit Describe acceptable condensate line installation practices. Discuss proper start-up and operating check procedures, as well as the correct methods for determining a heat pump system's capacity and efficiency. {© Copyright 2004 bythe Religeralon Sense Engheers Saeey. Lesson 16 Heat Pump Installation Procedures Meee LUCCESSFUL HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS ARE THE RESULT OF GOOD DESIGN, installation, and service practices. Industry reports cite poor installation practices as the leading cause of customer complaints Installers need a good understanding of heat pump basics to complete an acceptable installation. Without this foundation, installers with the best of intentions are doomed to repeat costly mistakes—not just in terms of operating and maintenance costs, but in terms of customer relations as well. Heat pump science is well-documented, and information outlining good installation practices is abundant. In most cases, simply taking the time to read the installation instructions that come with the equipment will help you avoid. ‘many common errors. You should always read the installation literature thoroughly before beginning the installation process. Heat pumps provide comfort cooling in the summer, just as cooling-only units do, They also provide heating in the winter, just as fossil fuel units do. But at this point, the similarities between the technologies decrease. A heat pump uses vapor compression to provide heating as well as cooling. Therefore, the indoor and outdoor coils are called on to do “double duty.” Each serves as an evaporator to remove heat from the air passing through its finned coil. Each serves as a condenser to reject heat into the air passing through its finned coil. One coil ‘must operate in outdoor ambient conditions, the other operates with indoor air passing through it in both seasons. The range of differing air temperatures in e006
