REFRIGERATION SERVICE ENGINEERS SOCIETY Lesson 20 Refrigerant-Side Troubleshooting (Cooling Air-to-Air) Part I a % SUPP OR OROROR ORE Cason After completing this Lesson, you will be able to: "Define the terms used to desoribe various heat measurement values. = Explain the proper use of the test instruments required for gathering the heat measurements that you need in order to analyze a refrigeration cycle. ® Plot the performance of a properly operating cooling system on a Mollier (pressure-enthalpy) diagram. Use Mollier diagrams to explain the effects of varying cooling mode refrigeration problems. Describe the step-by-step troubleshooting procedure used to evaluate the heat measurements taken on an operating cooling system. ™ Discuss the meaning and value of each heat measurement taken on a service call. = Explain the reason for evaluating the high-pressure side of a cooling system before evaluating the low-pressure side of the system. = Compare various heat measurement values to judge the accuracy of a diagnosis. = Describe the differences in operating characteristics between systems that use fixed metering devices and those that use TEVs. It is the most important, and least understood, task that must be performed. Most callbacks are the result of faulty diagnosis. Callbacks not only are unprofitable for your company, they can amage your reputation. The practice of following a scientific procedure every time you check a heat pump system will serve to help you locate problems quickly. This Lesson focuses on troubleshooting the refrigerant side of an air-to-air heat pump operating in the cooling mode. Many people have allowed themselves to be seduced into believing that analyzing the refrigerant circuit involves little more than taking a few pressure measurements, There are no “magic” refrigerant pressure levels that can be used for definitively locating problems. Reftigerant pressure varies with the refrigerant used in a system and with the levels of heat intensity in the source and sink. As an HVACIR service professional, you are in the heat transfer business—and you must evaluate heat pumps by using heat ‘measurements. In this Lesson, you will apply information leamed in previous Lessons. You will evaluate the performance of a system based on the levels of superheat, subcooling, and temperature differences measured at various points in the system.
