REFRIGERATION SERVICE ENGINEERS SOCIETY Heat Load Calculations TE *' SURERORERERGRORD Peta After completing this Lesson, you will be able to: Define the basic terms used to describe heat transfer and explain how they relate to each other. = Calculate heat transfer multipliers (HTMs) using the known F-values of common construction material. "Describe the points of interest that an HVAG/R designer or service technician should cover when making a preliminary survey of a building. ™ Use tables found in ACCA Manual J and other reference sources to establish the design weather conditions for homes in the U.S. and Canada. = Explain to a customer when outdoor air may be used for free cooling, as well as when (and why) it should not be used. = Complete a basic heat load calculation that evaluates the following: internal and external heat load factors, inftration and ventilation issues, sensible and latent heat load sources, duct loss/gain considerations, equipment capacities. ‘©Copyright 2004 by to Reigazaon Sonic Engineers Sooke Lesson 28 Heat Load Calculations Mineo BUILDING PROVIDES AN “ENVELOPE” THAT PROTECTS OCCUPANTS FROM AN teenie sy nme se! ain .clean and healthy indoor environment in which people may live and work, Heat and humidity from the outdoors can migrate into any structure, ‘The integrity of the envelope and the differences between the indoor and outdoor temperatures and vapor pressures determine how quickly or slowly heat and moisture will diffuse into (or out of) a conditioned space. One of the responsibilities of an HVACIR professional is to calculate the rate at which heat and moisture will enter or leave a conditioned space. These questions are answered when a heat gain/heat loss calculation is completed for the house or building being evaluated. Occasionally, a service technician may be called on to evaluate a house that is not being heated or cooled properly by its mechanical system. (The equipment may be operating and delivering its rated capacity, but the conditioned space is not being maintained at the desired temperature.) The technician should know how to complete an accurate heat load calculation. In order to estimate the heating and cooling requirements for a building, you must understand some basic facts about construction materials. All materials transfer heat, Some materials transfer heat more slowly than other materials, and thus make good insulators. You must be able to predict the rate of heat e028
