A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: Students will understand that some things are limited. They will learn ways to share limited items. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 2nd grade Skill Level: All levels Grouping: o Whole groupdiscussion o Individual groupanswering questions in Social Studies notebook

C. Materials: Popcorn in one large brown paper bag Newspaper in one large brown paper bag Small brown paper lunch sacks White board and markers Social Studies journal and pencil D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E11.2.2 Describe ways to share classroom resources.

Student-Friendly Standards I can share classroom supplies that are limited.

E. Procedure: 1. Announce that a parent sent in some popcorn for our class to enjoy today. 2. There are two large brown bags that look like they have popcorn in them at the front of the room. 3. Give each student a small brown bag and instruct the first rows to come up and get as much popcorn as they want. Then have the next row come up until all the popcorn is gone in the first bag. 4. Open the second bag and show the students that there is no more popcorn. It only has newspaper in it. Tell the students that you are sorry that there is not enough popcorn to go around. 5. Explain that we thought that there was enough for everyone but there was not. 6. Suggest that, if the first students served had known there was a limited amount, perhaps they might have been careful to leave enough for the rest of the class.

7. Discuss the following. 8. A. What is the problem? (There wasn't enough popcorn for everyone who wanted it.) 9. B. Why does this problem exist? (The amount of popcorn was limited and there were many students who wanted popcorn. Those who were selected first got as much or more popcorn than they could really eat.) 10. Tell students that other groups still need a snack, but there's no popcorn left. Ask the students what could be done. (Those with popcorn could share. Teacher could pop more popcorn. Teacher could provide an alternative snack. Those without a snack could go without.) 11. Explain that when faced with limited amounts of an item they need to decide how something should be used and/or who should get something that is available. 12. The number of computers available at school is limited, but students and teachers have unlimited wants for the computers. Students and teachers want to use the computers to write, research, learn to use software, and so on. 13. Ask the students who decides when and how the computers are used at school. (teacher, principal, other faculty) 14. What are some other items in our class that are limited? 15. What are some ways that we can share these limited items? 16. Have the students list in their Social Studies journal, the items in our classroom that are limited and three ways that we can share the limited items. 17. When the students are done have them share their ideas with a partner. 18. Have one student from each group share one of the ideas from their list with the class. 19. CLOSURE: Today, we learned that some items in our classroom are limited. We came up with ways to use the limited items. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The students will discuss how to share classroom supplies that are limited. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. The students will write in their Social Studies journal three on how to share limited items in the classroom. G. Reflection:

1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think using the popcorn to show that things have limits and need to be shared will be the easiest part of this lesson. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I also think that the same part that is easy to teach could also be the most challenging part of the lesson depending upon the class dynamics. I think that this demonstration could upset some of the students that did not receive any popcorn. I will most likely have extra popcorn saved to give to these students or I will have the students share their popcorn with the students that did not get any. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? We will be learning about consumers in this unit, we could discuss that many other resources outside the classroom can also be limited. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? If the students do not grasp this concept I will spend extra one on one time with those students. I will also try and work with them closely during the lesson. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I might need to provide extra popcorn or an alternate snack for the students that did not get any popcorn. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? It was difficult trying to make sure that the popcorn activity related to the concept of limited resources in the classroom. http://ecedweb.unomaha.edu/k-12/k-5concepts.cfm
