1) June 2001 -"All conflict in literature is, in its simplest form, a struggle between good and evil." - Quote interpretation: The quote, in simpler words, means that the obsticales and struggles that take place in literature can all filter down into one conflict. This constant conflict is good versus evil. - Animal Farm by George Orwell: Animal Farm is an allegoric novel (relating to the Russian Revolution) about perfsonified animals disliking their owner. The animals attempt to revolt with the intention of setting up a "perfect" utopian society for themselves, a society without the evil of humans. With the help of two intelligent pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, the animals were able to defeat their enemy and lived independantly. Towards the end of the novel, we discover that Snowball and Napoleon are highly influenced by the actions of humans. Years pass on Animal farm and we find that the pigs become more and more like human beings by walking upright, carrying whips, and wearing clothes. In the end, the pigs backfire on their original plan of eliminating humans but instead, joined them. - Othello by William Shakespeare: William Shakespeare's use of characterization in "Othello" describes the character Othello as a brave, courageous, and honorable soldier. Shakespeare also introduces the complete contrast of Othello in the character Iago. Iago is portrayed as two-faced and manipulation, representing the evil aspect in the play. Shakespeare uses Iago to take advantage of Othello's trusting personality and to attack Othello's good nature. Othello becomes overridden with hate and jealousy, which consume all of his other emotions. Othello is an example of how a character can cross the line between good and evil. The relationship between Othello's character and Iago's character can be viewed as a battle of the two forces.

2) January 2002 All literature is protest. You cant name a single literary work that isnt

protest. Richard Wright - Quote interpretation: I think the point Richard Wright is trying to make is that literature is commentary on society. Since the author of the literature decides the content of the book, he puts his thoughts and opinions into the book, making it a protest for or against something in society. -Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell: Malcolm Gladwell shows in Outliers that sucess is dependendant on many factors. Factors such as age, year of birth, month of birth, race, gender, religion, birth place, etc. are shown through well researched statistics. In this piece of literature, Malcolm many examples of an idea he supports. His protest is to report the other reasons that contribute to one's success. -Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury: In Farenheit 451, Ray Bradbury tries to convey a message of the importance of education and knowledge. Guy Montag, the main character, lives in a world where books are considered as horrible things and are burned as civil duty. Books are considered to be the reson why humans are so different (intellectually) from each other. Books supply knowledge that might make one above another mentally, so therefore they must be burned. The setting is in a time of high technilogical advances. Through a series of events, Montag is able to value books and enjoys reading them. Bradbury conveys (therefore protests) that the value of knowledge is priceless.

3) June 2003 Good people are good because theyve come to wisdom through failure. William Saroyan -Quote interpretation: Through rough expriences and dark moments, people are able to prevent themselves from making the same mistakes. Also their expriences help them figure out what to aviod in order to live honorable lives. -The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho: The Alchemist proves the quote wrong. Santiago was a young boy with no expriences or failures (yet) to make him a good person, he was born that way. When Santiago chases his dreams he expriences many dark times. He exprience long travel, theft, and he nearly escapes death. Along with these events, he exprienses good times. He meats

the love of his life, he is able to do and see many things, and he discovers treasure. All these expriences and failures just make him a stronger and wiser person. -The Kite Runner by Khaled Housseni: In the novel, Hassan is a young boy with much to expirence. He is raised as an innocent, patient person. He didn't fail at anything (he hasn't expirenced much), but he is still a good person. He is loyal to his best friend Amir, even though Amir has constantly tested his patience. Hassan later expirenced many things, some joyful and some scarring, and even though these expirences made him wiser, it didn't contribute to whether he was a good or bad person.
