THE CIS MISSION

Chinese International School (CIS) is committed to the achievement of academic excellence and is characterized and enriched by its dual-language program in Chinese (Mandarin) and English. The mission of Chinese International School is to inspire students to a life-long love of learning. The school encourages intellectual curiosity and independent, critical and creative thinking which will maximize students' potential and promote the growth of the whole person. The school prepares its students to be compassionate, ethical and responsible individuals, contributing to local and global communities, respectful of other views, beliefs and cultures, and concerned to make a difference in the world.

ACCREDITATION/MEMBERSHIPS
Chinese International School is registered with the Hong Kong Government's Education Bureau and accredited by ECIS (European Council of International Schools) and NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges). The school is a member of The College Board, NACAC (National Association of College Admission Counselors), OACAC (overseas division of NACAC), CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education), EARCOS (East Asia Regional Council of Schools), ECIS (European Council of Independent Schools) and NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools).

THE FACULTY
Chinese International School has 181 full-time faculty and professional staff members and 6 part time, of whom hold 187 advanced certicates or graduate degrees. Teachers come from Africa, Australia, China, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

THE STUDENT BODY

Chinese International School currently enrolls 616 students in Primary School (Reception to Year 6) and 819 students in Secondary School (Years 7 to 13). The student body consists of students from Hong Kong, and other Asian countries (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand), Australia, Canada, Europe (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As a dual language school, CIS is unusual in that neither of its two languages are predominant in the Hong Kong community where Cantonese is commonly spoken. Few of our students gain exposure to Mandarin beyond their school experience.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM: YEARS 10 - 13

The languages of instruction at CIS are English and Putonghua (Chinese). The school operates on a term system with examinations only in Year 12 (May) and Year 13 (February and May). CIS students are not ranked, nor do we compute a Grade Point Average.

YEARS 10 - 11:
All students now follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP), studying a common curriculum of 8 core subjects plus one optional subject. Assessment is by internally marked and externally moderated coursework. Prior to 2004, students selected 7-8 courses from the two-year IGCSE (International General Certicate of Secondary Education) University of Cambridge Local Examination Scheme: Art! Computer Studies! YEARS 12 - 13:
All students pursue a course of study in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), selecting three Higher Level subjects and three Standard subjects, along with the required Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) projects, and the four-thousand word Extended Essay (personal research project).

Students completed their DP Examinations in May of Year 13, with nal results available in early July. All Year 12-13 complete Physical Education courses.

GRADING SYSTEM
Beginning August 2001, the Secondary School adopted the International Baccalaureate (IB) seven point grading scale (1-7) as the only grading system for Year 7 through Year 13. This 1-7 scale is used by the IB Organization in grading students for the Diploma as well as the Middle Years Program. Grades of 1-7 are used for all internal assessment, external examinations, and transcripts.

*CISs Chinese Program - Clarifying our IB results Our few native Mandarin speaking students are only allowed to enroll in Chinese A Literature and Chinese A Language and Literature courses at both Higher and Standard leverls. Non-native Mandarin speakers largely enroll in either Chinese B at Standard or Higher level or in Chinese ab initio. A few highly procient non-native Mandarin students participate in Chinese A courses.

The graduating class of 2012 consists of 111 students. Of the 111 students, two students are in the process of applying to universities in Australia; three students will be taking time off prior to commencing their studies. Of those students, one is taking voluntary gap year and two will complete National Service duty in Singapore.
