Syllabus Glass 1
Glassblowing 1 My goal for this class for this class is to present to you the tremendous and diverse properties, styles, and working techniques of glass. Through this introductory class, I hope to not only educate you on the sculptural potential of the medium, but to inspire creativity both in thought and execution of your artwork. This course will introduce you to a variety of glass working techniques including glass blowing, cold working, kiln casting and sand casting Grading: Attendance is mandatory! You are expected to show up for class on time, and to each of your individual blow slots (your absence compromises your partners progress). If you are tardy three times it will count as one absence. You are only allowed three absences. For each absence thereafter, your grade will drop one letter grade. (For example, you have a B overall, then miss the fourth class, you now have a B-; miss the fifth class, your grade drops to a C+). Weekly assignments-30% Weekly and/or monthly assignments will be given to encourage and aid your technical progress. Grades for these assignments are based on timely completion and quality of the work. Effort-30% This portion of the grade is based on your effort and participation during class, during individual blow slots and on your projects. Sketchbooks-15% A sketchbook is required for this course. The contents are to include all handouts given during the course of the semester (you will need to create a folder that will accompany your sketchbook for these), notes on demonstrations, slides, sketches of ideas, questions, and reflection assignments that will be assigned throughout the semester. The sketchbooks will be collected at the end of the semester for grading and then returned to you. The grading will be based on clarity, thoroughness, and thoughtfulness.
