Antidote for despair
M
UCH OF WHAT people see and read about
world events today appear to be spiraling to-
wards even more violence, environmental di-
sasters, escalating wickedness and criminality-lead-
ing to feelings of fear, grief, and despair.
The rapidly deteriorating economic condition ex-
acerbates what is happening in almost every region of
the world, thus, forcing individuals to the most desper-
ate of actions. Suicide rates are soaring as governments
slash public spending, cut wages, close public services,
and eliminate hundreds of thousands of jobs to cope
with needed austerity measures, in effect, driving mil-
lions beyond the upper limits of their tolerance.
Daily streams of bulletin report protest movements
fueled by anger and growing feelings of helplessness.
People are demanding change as billions or more than a
third of the world's population is lacking basic resourc-
es for survival, whereas, a relatively small number has
an abundance and control of those same resources. Con-
fronted by the enormity of the challenge society faces
today, despair or the absence of hope increasingly sinks
in which is a debilitating emotion that, to others, can be
a very deep abyss to dig one out of, especially without
help.
But there is help. God Almighty fully understands
how man feels, after all, He is the Maker and Creator
not just of man but of the whole universe. Through His
Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, He teaches man the very
prime necessity of life, thus: "So do not worry, saying,
'What shall we eat? Or 'What shall we drink? Or 'What
shall we wear' For the pagan run after all these things,
and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and
all these things will be given to you as well" (Matt. 6:31-33,
New International Version, emphasis ours).
P eople often expressly say, "It does no good to
worry". But the reality of things is that people do worry
tremendously: about the security of their job, the safety
of their children, their mortgage payment, other bills to
EDITORIAL
pay, food for their family, etc. As though to pour a dose
of cold water on those who worry so much on these "pa-
gan" concerns, the Savior declared: "your heavenly Fa-
ther knows that you need them ... and all these things
will be given to you". God will provide- so anxious care
and worriment need not be expended on them if you seek
first his kingdom and His righteousness. Besides, worry
creates stress. Excessive stress can create a life of depres-
sion and sadness.
Man must set his priorities straight then. The biblical
command "seek first" implies that it should be the first
thing to be attended to. Nothing should crowd this aside.
Not food. Not what to wear or what to drink. But with
most zealous effort and perseverance, man must press on
till he obtains God's kingdom and His righteousness. His
mind and focus must not be diverted from this divine
search. Food and clothing are minor matters in compari-
son with them.
The "kingdom" that must be foremost of all in man's
search was given to the "flock", as the Lord Jesus Christ
Himself assert: "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Fa-
ther has been pleased to give you the kingdom" (Luke
12:32, Ibid.).
Those whom God has rescued from out of the dark-
ness of this world had been brought to the "kingdom of
the Son" wherein they have obtained redemption and the
forgiveness of sins through the shed blood of the Lord
Jesus Christ (Col. 1:12-14, Ibid.). The "flock" which was
redeemed or purchased by Jesus with His own blood is
the Church Of Christ (Acts 20:28, Lamsa Translation).
All men need the Church Of Christ then. This "king-
dom of the Son" must not be put on the background in
man's order of priorities in life. Remember, Jesus said
"seek first".
Finding the "kingdom", or becoming a member of
thE> Churrh Of Chri,:;t i,:; not thE> E>nd of man',:; r e ,:;pon,:;ibil-
ity tough. He must also "seek" God's "righteousness".
This righteousness was explained by Apostle Paul, thus:
"1 am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power

.; ." ...
, ..... _ ... . -.'
of God for the salvation of everyone
who believes: first for the Jew, then
for the Gentile. For in the gospel a
righteousness from God is revealed,
a righteousness that is by faith first to
last, just as it is written: 'The righteous
will live by faith'" (Rom. 1:16-17, NIV,
emphaSiS ours).
The "righteousness" of God is the
gospel. It is God's powerful way of
bringing all who believe it ultimately
unto salvation to share in His "heav-
enly kingdom". But faith in the gospel
must be coupled with works or obe-
dience Games 2:14, 17, 19, 24, Ibid.),
otherwise, it is inoperative, dead and
unproductive for salvation.
Apostle Paul bolstered the need
for man's obedience to God's righ-
teousness or gospel when he enthusi-
astically pointed out such, thus: "Now,
brothers, 1 want to remind you of the
gospel 1 preached to you, which you
received and on which you have tak-
en your stand. By this gospel you are
saved, if you hold firmly to the word 1
preached to you. Otherwise, you have
believed in vain" (I Cor. 15:1-2, Ibid.).
The gospel which has been
preached to man must be accepted,
believed, held fast or kept firmly so
as to fully benefit from God's prom-
ise that "all these things will be given to
you". That is, unless man never really
believes it in the first place.
God set the standard on how man
can receive His promised material and
spiritual bleSSings in a very simple
way: obedience to Him. The problem
is, many find obedience to God so diffi-
cult in a world so attractive and which
calls on man with a loud, enticing voice
filled with all the delights it can offer.
That is why Apostle Paul vividly assert-
ed that it is hard to be a true Christian
in these last days, thus : "You lnay .:lS
well know this too, Timothy, that in the
last days it is going to be very difficult
to be a Christian. For people will love

only themselves and their money; they
will be proud and boastful, sneering at
God, disobedient to their parents, un-
grateful to them, and thoroughJy bad.
They will be hardheaded and never
give in to others; they will be constant
liars and troublemakers and will think
nothing of immorality. They will be
rough and cruel, and sneer at those
who try to be good. They will betray
their friends; they will be hotheaded,
puffed up with pride, and prefer good
times to worshiping God. They will go
to church, yes, but they won't really
believe anything they hear. Don't be
taken in by people like that" (II Tim.
3:1-5, Living Bible).
How true are these things today?
According to a report released last
October 9, 2012 by the Pew Research
Center's Forum on Religion and Pub-
lic Life, more people are atheist, ag-
nostic, or unaffiliated with religion
than ever before. In fact, a third of
adults under 30 have no religiOUS af-
filiation (32%).
Compound that spiritual crisis
with those who are self-centered and
lovers of money, or, in the words of
the apostle "will love only themselves
and their money." Add up those who
are loose in morals and conduct,
puffed up with pride, and "prefa
good times to worshiping God." The
sheer nurnber of religions, churches,
and pseudo-religious organizations
today is deceptive and misleading,
for, Apostle Paul declared: "They
will go to church, yes, but they won't re-
ally believe anything they hear."
No doubt, God decreed that all
ungodly men will perish together
with this earth and everything in it
on Judgment Day (II Pet. 3:7, 10). On
that Day, even mighty and strong
men will cry bitterly. Those who en-
gross themselves with accumulat-
ing "silver and gold" (money) on this
earth will find lamentably that their
wealth cannot deliver them from
God's wrath (Zeph. 1:14-15, 17-18).
What makes faithful membership
in the Church Of Christ doubly impor-
tant? First, members of the Church Of
Christ were redeemed by the cleans-
ing blood of Jesus, and as such, will be
saved on Judgment Day. Second, even
in this life, they are enjOined to ask
God in prayers with thanksgiving for
what they need, because the promise
is: "Don't worry about anything, but in
all your prayers ask God for what you
need, always asking him with a thank-
ful heart ... And with all his abundant
wealth through Christ Jesus, my God
will supply all your needs" (Phil. 4:6,
19, Today's English Version) .
God promised to liberally sup-
ply every need of His people from His
riches. The material worries and every-
day concerns of man can be alleviated.
He must not allow himself to be immo-
bilized and be numbed by the feeling
of despair and powerlessness. There
is a biblical antidote to it. He must be-
gin taking steps towards positive ac-

tion: search for God's kingdom
or the Church Of Christ. Therein,
complete obedience to God's
righteousness or gospel must be
learned even through discipline
and punishment from God (Heb.
12:5-10).
Man may have been accus-
tomed to many promises made
and broken by his fellowmen.
But with God it is different. His
promises to His people stand. At
the end of their perilous journey
on earth, the obedient and faithful
members of the Church Of Christ
await "a new heaven and a new
earth" where God "will wipe away
all tears from their eyes. There will be
no more death, no more grief or cry-
ing or pain" (Rev. 21:1-4, TEV). All
of that will be gone forever. 0

Should the Sabbath be observed today?
GOOD DAY TO you! I just want to inquire
regarding your religion. It is written in
Deuteronomy 5:12-15 that God sanctified the
day of Sabbath. Thus, it is only righteous that
worship to God should be performed in the
day of Sabbath. Why is it that in your religion
you do not observe Sabbath and you even have
worship service done on Thursday?

Editor's reply:
We express our appreciation for your interest
regarding the Church Of Chri st and we hope
that you will continue your search for the truth.
Regarding your question, it's true that the Israel ites
were commanded to observe the day of the
Sabbath (Deut. 5: 12-15). Our Lord God gave this
commandment to His servant Moses: "There are
six days when you may work, but the seventh
day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly.
You are not to do any work; wherever you live,
it is a Sabbath to the LORD" (Lev. 23:3, New
International Version). Those who did not observe
this at that time were punished (Num. 15:32-
35, Ibid. ). Thus, during the time of Moses, this
commandment of God was carefull y observed.
But time came when the observance of
the Sabbath became meaningless to our Lord
God. The Prophet Isaiah clarify this in his writ-
ings, "Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your
incense is detestabl e to me. New Moons, Sab-
baths and convocations--I cannot bear your
evi l assemblies" (lsa. 1 :1 3, Ibid.) .
It is made clear to us that the Israelites' ob-
servance of the Sabbath became meaningless
before God and thus, should be stopped (Hos.
2:1 1). Even our Lord Jesus Christ did not ob-
serve the day of rest as what is written in Luke
13: 14-16: "Indignant because Jesus had healed
on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the
people; 'there are six days for work. So come
and be healed on those days, not on the Sab-
bath: The Lord answered him, 'You hypocrites!
Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox
or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it
water? Then should not this woman, a daughter
of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for
eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath
day from what bound her?" (NIV).
In this light, let us understand that in the
Christian Era, the observance of the Sabbath
as decreed in the law of Moses is no longer
commanded to be practised. Furthermore, it
is clarified by the Bible that people will not
be justified by the Law of Moses (Acts 13:39).
But man's obligation to serve and worship
God never ceases because this is his primary
duty to his Creator (Ps. 100:2-3). Even during the
time of the apostles, the Christians continued to
gather together to fulfill this sacred command-
ment: "Now on the first day of the week, when
the disciples came together to break bread, Paul,
ready to depart the next day, spoke to them
and continued his message until midnight"
(Acts 20:7, New King james Version). It must be
noted that in this verse, the day the first-century
Church Of Christ performed their congrega-
tional worship service was on "The first day of
the week" or Sunday. For this same reason the
Iglesia Ni Cristo holds worship services during
Sundays. How about other days? Is it forbid-
den by God to hold worship services on other
days? Again, the Acts of the Apostles 2:46 states
that: "They followed a daily discipline of wor-
ship in the Temple followed by meals at home,
every meal a celebration, exuberant and joy-
ful " (Message). We must realize that there was
even a time when the early Christians held their
congregational services dail y. This is why the
IgleSia Ni Cristo holds worship services during
Thursdays or Wednesdays and Sundays or Sat-
urdays. Whatever the day or time, whenever the
worship service comes, whatever the hindrance
may be, Church Of Christ members give utmost
importance to worshiping God because it is a
commandment that His true servants always
fulfill.

Is there still hope for mankind
amid the cycle of hopelessness
many find themselves in?
T
wo THOUSAND AND thirteen has just
started and yet, many are feeling downright
hopeless. It seems that the new year, in spite
of the initial euphoria, cannot bid goodbye to the
problems and frustrations of the past year, casting
a feeling of pessimism and cynicism upon many.
Indeed, still looming in the hori zon are man's
enormous problems: unending wars, soaring food
and fuel prices, debilitating diseases, calamities
and di sasters that are displacing populations and
thrc atcning govcl'nn,cnts.
This makes us wonder-and ask ourselves:
How can we aspire for a bright future in the
drumbeat of impending bad news? How should
4 FEBRUA RY 2013 ' GOD' S MESSAGE
we react when confronted with gloom and doom
scenarios? Is there still hope for mankind amid the
cycle of hopelessness many find themselves in?
Dark and uncertai future
If what we hope for is a kinder, gentler world,
then we will be utterly disappointed . Our Lord
God, through the prophet Ezekiel, foretold what
would take place in these last days: "This is what
the Sovereign LORD is saying: 'One di saster after
anolher i" curning un yu u. I l ' ~ dll uver. This is
the end. You are finished. The end is coming for
you people who live in the land' . .. . " (Ezek. 7:5-7,
Today's English Vers ion).
Also, the prophet Isaiah
mentioned of the devastation and
destruction that would be wrought
by evil people: "Their feet run to evil,
And they make haste to shed innocent
blood; Their thoughts are thoughts
of iniquity; Wasting and destruction
are in their paths. The way" of peace
they have not known, And there is no
justice in their ways" (Isa. 59:7-8, New
King James Version).
No wonder, most of media's staple
issues and ' topics today are enough
to make one cringe in hopelessness
and fear. Screaming headlines tell
ominously of impending threats to
mankind-terror attacks, recessions,
pandemics, environmental disasters,
among others.
Moreover, nothing in this world is
certain: fame, power and possessions
are ephemeral. Man himself has been
appOinted by God to die-in fact, he
faces death everyday (I Cor. 15:31)-
and afterward judgment (Heb. 9:27).
Even this world in which we live will
not exist forever (II Pet. 3:7, 10); it is
bound to perish and be discarded (Ps.
102:25-26) .
Man's living hope
~ . Inasmuch as life on earth is bleak and
the future is grim, what then remains
as man's only hope?
Apostle Peter reminds us of
our living hope that includes an
"inheritance which is imperishable,
undefiled, and unfading ... " (I Pet.
1:3-5, Revised Standard Version) which
we will receive in the new heavens
and a new earth (II Pet. 3:13).
Unlike this world we live in, in the
Holy City we will never experience
tribulation; it is a perfect place: thus,
there will be no more sorrow or crying,
death, thirst, and hunger (Rev. 21:1-4).
However, not just anyone can
truly hope to gain entrance to the
Holy City. Apostle Paul m.ade n,ention
of those who are in Christ who are
"heirs according to the promise" and
thus can hope to receive the eternal
Nothing in this world is certain:

reward (Gal. 3:29). They have become
heirs of God's promise, because our
Lord Jesus Christ created one new
man from two- Christ and those who
are in Him (Gal. 3:16; Eph. 2:15). The
composition of the one new man is
Christ as the head and the Church as .
the body (Col. 1:18).
To become an heir, man must
become one with Christ through
His body which is the Church Of
Christ (Col. 1:18; Acts 20:28, Lamsa
Translation). The Church Of Christ is,
indeed, indispensable because only
through it can man become one with
Christ.
Thus, joining the Church Of
Christ and remaining obedient to
God's commands until the end is of
utmost importance in order to enter
the Holy City and receive eternal life.
Source of all hope and blessings
On the part of God's faithful servants,
He is their unfailing source of
hope; thus, they will never give up
entrusting their lives to God: "Even
if a whole army surrounds, me, I will
not be afraid; even if enemies attack
me, I will still trust God. I have asked
the LORD for one thing; one thing only
do I want: to live in the LORD's house
all my life, to marvel there at his
goodness, and to ask for his guidance.
In times of trouble he will shelter me;
he will keep me safe in his Temple
and make me secure on a high rock"
(Ps. 27:3-5, TEV).
No matter what the future holds,
they find hope and comfort in God's
blessings and promises: "God says,
'I 'Will s ave those 'Who love me and
will protect those who acknowledge
me as LORD. When they call to me, I
will answer them; when they are in
trouble, I will be with them. I will
rescue them ... I will reward them
with long life; I will save them'" (Ps.
91:14-16, Ibid.).
Most of all, the hope members
of the Church Of Christ await is. that
on the day of Judgment they will be
glorious like our Lord Jesus Christ (Phil.
3:20-21) and will receive salvation and
eternal life in the Holy City.
This hope of the members of
the Church Of Christ will never fail
because it is anchored on the promise
of God (Heb. 6:19, 18). Thus they are
instructed to hold fast because He
who promised is faithful- He will not
break His promise (Heb. 10:23); He
does not lie (Num. 23:19); and He can
do everything (Luke 1:37).
Rekindling their hope
Given the negative expectations
and widespread pessimism around
them, God's people should keep
their eyes focused and fixed on the
promised eternal city and eternal life.
In addition, the apostles remind them
to fight the good fight of faith so that
the world will not be able to take away
their hope for salvation (I Tim. 6:12).
Whether various adversities
or troubles are forthcoming or not,
they should not give in to the lures
and temptations of this evil world:
instead, they should strive to obey
God's commandments (I Tim. 4:10) .
Obedience to His words- attending
the worship service, sharing their
faith to others, loving the brotherhood,
among others-is a testament to their
hope in God.
Indeed, they "hould not let their
hope wane or diminish even in the

of people forming in front of the Bill Graham Civic
Auditorium, a venue known for rock concerts and the
like. Nearby coffee shop owners and parking garage
attendants were all wondering, "What's going on
today? It's only 8 a.m. and it's a Thursday."
John Toomey from Santa Rosa was one of those
people in line and he knew the Bill Graham Civic
Auditorium all too well. "I worked in this building;
I've probably done 100 concerts in this building alone
as well as other places in San Francisco. Rock concerts
are pretty, you know what 1 mean; they're superficial.
This is a whole new level; rock concerts don't mean
much at all compared to this, you know ... this is the

John is a member of the Iglesia Ni Cristo. Today, he's not
here to work, but rather to attend a worship service to be led
by the Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, along
with nearly 6,000 members from allover Northern California.
The presence of the Iglesia Ni Cristo could be felt all
around the vicinity. Church flags stood tall, waving in the
cold San Francisco air, while Centennial logos topped the
light posts all around the area. For Sister Shaina Avery
from Mountain View, seeing these symbols gave such pride
and unity among members as they walked towards the
venue. "The flags that are out on the streets-the brethren
everywhere like on every corner-every street you go to you
see someone you recognize. It's really cool."
"I can't think of a better way to start the new year than
with a special worship service officiated by our brother,"
said Brother Tim Beery from Hayward. "For him to take

tremendous sacrifice ... and to do the service which he does,
is incredible, just incredible," added Brother Tim.
Thousands of members here in San Francisco came to

also took part in this worship service via satellite. "It was an
amazing feeling that brethren around the world, different
times zones, are experiencing the very same event," Brother
Tim Beery exclaimed.
In his homily, Brother Eduardo emphasized on the
importance of being a true Christian. "What we should bear
in mind is that our Lord Jesus Christ did not sin. Our Lord Jesus
Christ did not live in sin. Our Lord Jesus Christ lived righteously.
His way of life was blameless. Hence, a true Christian should also
lead a righteous way of life. Leading a new life is, indeed, highly
important. If we are striving to be strong in the faith and remain
steadfast in our membership in the Church Of Christ, we also need
to be found in the kind of life sought by God for us to be truly
edified," the Executive Minister exhorted the faithful.
For Sister Anna Himebaugh, the message came through
loud and clear. "Brother Eduardo brought forth the message
of love and edification for the Christians. That we aren't just
here by accident; that we were called, and we need to realize
that. As Christians, we need to be serious about it, check
ourselves, and get our act together before it is too late."
"And it's a constant work in progress. We should never
really be satisfied with any progress that we've made so far.
It's always working to the next level pretty much. We should
always rely on God because our life is pretty much in His
hands. And as much as we can put hard work, studying,
working hard at our jobs, it's not really going to do us justice
if we are without God like what Brother Eduardo mentioned
in his sermon. So, we really need to pray for His guidance
and for Him to always be by our side," said Brother Elbert
Parco.
Brother Eduardo taught about the importance of not just
being a Christian by name but living free from sin. "If we
truly desire to be blessed by God, if we want to remain in His love
and to preserve our election, our manner of life should be like that
of our Lord Jesus Christ. We should never yield to sin especially
in these times. "
"Not a lot of people know how to be a true Christian,
they think they are, but they are in the wrong church and get
the wrong message. Being here, you get the right message,
you can feel it. If you understand them, follow them, it does
things for you, makes things happen in your life," said
Brother Robert Speller.
Many families came together to witness this event as
Brother Eduardo addressed the issues and tough decisions
that young people face today. "So, we are appealing to all
our youth: let us wisely choose our friends. We should not allow
ourselves to be swayed into doing evil. Rather, we should be the
ones to lead them toward the righteous path in order for all of us
to be assured of the promised salvation come the day of Judgment. "
For Brother William Jacy, the message for the youth
strengthened him even more, letting him know that being
a true Christian is really about making the right choices.
"Being a kid in high school you learn a bunch of temptations
out there whether it be alcohol and drugs. I don't know how
many times I've had some of my nonmember friends say,
'Hey Willy, let's go drink something after schooV and I'd be
like, 'No, that would be bad for me and that would be bad
for my offices and that just looks bad, and I can't afford to
do that sin behind everyone's back and just live with that.
I wouldn't be able to do it.' That's what we all strive to be
as a true Christian. So, that involves renewing ourselves,
changing our ways, making sure that we walk on the path
that God wants us to walk on."
Sister Rana Domondo came with her children and
grandchildren. Brother Eduardo's message for the younger
generation is exactly what her family needed to hear. "I
hope, I'm doing everything, really we are doing everything
we can to let our family know, even our little children. We
talk to them about God. All my children, my grandchildren,
are all in the choir. Even the little six-year-old, right there.
She's already practicing to sing. And everybody knows in
our family, we teach them to be in the Church and hang
in there, and never go away. And we try to teach them the
same-that we believe that God is first, 'cause without God
you don't know what's going to happen to you. God is hope.
And if you don't have hope, there's no use living."
After the worship service, Brother Eduardo and his wife,
Sister Lynn, inaugurated the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation
Building in downtown San Francisco. It will be the main hub
of the foundation's many ongoing charitable projects in the
Philippines and abroad.
In today's worship service, the definition of what
it means to be a true Christian has been reinforced and
ingrained in the hearts and minds uf all who allended. They
go back out into the world knowing full well who they are
as members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, and who they should be
in the eyes of the world, but more importantly, in the eyes
of God. ~

T
HE WORSHIP SERVICE has ended. The Executive
Minister, Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, and his family
have already left the chapel grounds. But the excitement
lingered. Brethren rushed along the side walk, some cut straight
through the snow; taking pictures, capturing memories, and
sharing their favorite moments of the pastoral visit. But if one
must take just one memory from this day, may it be this: the
odds were against the brethren here in Salt Lake City, Utah;
according to statistics, this day should not have been, but when
the odds are against God's people, His love always wins.
Tn a county where R7.5 p e rcent of the residents identify
themselves as Mormon (http://www.city-data.com/). in a
landscape dominated by Mormon temples, in a city where
even the street signs lead you in the direction of the Mormon
headquarters, the members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo travel
against the flow of the majority. They travel in the direction
where God's words take them. Against the odds, they've
grown from a handful of brethren to a thriving congregation
with their very own house of worship. This chapel stands as
the first Iglesia Ni Cristo house of worship in the state of Utah.
And the brethren here have made a decision: this house of
God will be loved.
"We are very fortunate," said Brother Fred Lacson,
"indeed, very blessed that we have this magnificent house of
worship and we are very thankful to our Almighty God." Tear
after grateful tear fell even before the worship service began.
The organis t played hynu. preludes as the brellu'en sal i.n ll"le
sanctuary fervently praying. When the worship service did
begin, the brethren's tears turned to pools of relief that this
day had finally come. "It's like you know the feeling when
everything is on your shoulders," said Sister Linda Santos, "and
then for an hour nothing was there. It was overwhelming."
During the worship service, Brother Eduardo Manalo
reminded the brethren what they should do when their
shoulders are heavy-laden with problems. He reminded the
congregation of the struggles in the life of Joseph, the son
of Jacob. If anyone had problems, it was him- everything
seemed to go wrong for Joseph. His brothers being jealous
of him, sold him into slavery and as a slave, he was falsely
accused and then imprisoned. Despite the bleakness of
his situation, Joseph still clung to God. In the end he was
appointed to take charge of the whole nation of Egypt,
second in command only to the Pharaoh, and in the process
saved his family and the entire country from starvation.
Joseph's enemies intended to hurt him and it would have
been easy for Joseph to see the trials he faced as a reason
to lose trust in God. But he realized that God allowed these
things to happen for the good.
As the world is now plummeting in a downward
spiral towards its demise, a misstep in decision making is
commonplace today for man. However, for us to turn to a
faulty way of alleviating our problems shouldn't be the case.
Like Joseph, we have a God Whom we can turn to, Who cares
for us, as the apostles explained: "Casting the whole of your
care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns,
once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately
and cares about you watchfully" (I Pet. 4:7, Amplified Bible). So
when life seems darkest, when we're surrounded on all sides
by problems, and when the odds don't favor us, we know
the decision to make. "You should tell yourselves, " said Brother
Eduardo, "] will never turn my back on God."
Having heard this biblical truth, the members of the
Church Of Christ in Utah have made a firm decision: no matter
what path the majority travels, they will follow the LORD.

LASHING LIGHTS, GLITZ, and glam. These are
but a few words to describe the extravagance of Las
Vegas, Nevada. Renowned for its famous casinos and
lavish hotels, the "Live Entertainment Capital of the World"
thrives on vices such as gambling, drinking, and adult
entertainment. With its dramatic scenery and wide range of
merrymaking pleasures, it entices tourists from all over the
world, a place best known for its slogan, "What happens in
Vegas stays in Vegas." Yet even at the heart of what is dubbed
as "Sin City," the true Christians emerged triumphantly with
a bright new house of worship and fervent faith that could
outshine any spectacle on the Las Vegas Strip.
On Wednesday, January 9, 2013, as tourists and native
Nevadans lined up for various shows and attractions,
brethren from the district of Southern California lined up
for an event of far more spiritual significance-the house of
worship dedication of Las Vegas local congregation. After
the opening prayer led by Brother Robert F. Pellien, district
minister of Southern California, the homily began. Brother
Eduardo V. Manalo, Executive Minister of the Church Of
Christ, delivered the message of God, emphasizing that God
set us apart from the rest of mankind for Christ (John 17:6,
14). It was further explained how it is not for the true servants
of God to conform to the ways of society that have defiled
the earth which brought forth imminent destruction upon
humanity (Isa. 24:5-6, 19-20; Lev. 20:23). Rather, it is expected
of us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts for a path of
righteousness, diSCipline, and sobriety (Titus 2:12-14).
The Executive Minister concluded the lesson by
describing the blessings laid in store for those who obey, as
Psalm 36:10 was read, thus: "Continue to love those who
know You and to do good to those who are righteous." The
congregation then expressed their thanks to God in a closing
prayer led by Brother Mathusalem V. Pareja.
After the uplifting worship service, Brother Eduardo
proceeded to the overflow tent to watch a special program
Page 16 of 44
prepared by the youth members and production crew
of Southern California. They performed an original
INC musical entitled "You're Invited." In this activity
conceptualized by the Executive Minister himself, creative
arts such as music, dance, and theater are used not only to
enhance the spiritual lives of members but also to propagate
God's message. Through this platform, brethren are able to
use their God-given talents for the spreading of the Gospel.
"You're Invited!" made its first US debut just a few months
earlier in Irvine, California at Resonate, during an evangelical
mission with over 7,000 attendees.
On stage was a picturesque array of young performers
w-ho exemplified being lights of this world. With fiery eyes
and hearts ablaze, the cast performed with enthusiasm and
closed the theatrical set with a song about the Lord Jesus
Christ Who established the one true Church. The sound of
music and soulful singing resounded as performers moved
to original hip-hop beats and intricate choreography.
The short program concluded with a special song called
"Let's Keep Growing Stronger In Our Faith", w-ruch reflects
the Church's campaign for this year-intensive edification.
A wave of excitement and emotion took over as Brother
Eduardo stood up for a picture-taking with the cast and
crew. Followed by more smiles and tears of joy, brethren
of all ages swarmed to greet and shake hands with the
Executive Minister.
Powerful, indeed, and unforgettable was the presence of
the Lord God experienced at the Las Vegas house of worship
dedication. He did not disappoint His people in their efforts
and devotional prayers for their newly dedicated house
of worship. The loving care and guidance of the Church
Administration enveloped the gathered Church Of Christ
members, leaving them with a flame of faith that burns so
bright-not even the lustrous city lights of Las Vegas could
match its radiance .

T A TIME when the doors of many churches are clos-
ing-both literally and figuratively-the story is quite
different for the members of the Church Of Christ. Sis-
ter Aimee Macahillas, whose family moved residence 30 times
in her childhood, knows just how important it is to have a place
to call home. "Every time I walk into a chapel, that's home. The
moment I open those doors and 1 see a friendly face, I'm home.
And that to me is very comforting." Here in Portland, Oregon,
brethren have a place to find refuge--a place to pray and a place
where they can find comfort-in their new house of worship.
Many carne early to witness the dedication of this house
of worship led by the Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo
V. Manalo. Before the start of the worship service, the crowd
outside continued to grow. Brother Richard Carr said, "Where
do you see lines of brethren standing outside a chapel wait-
ing to get inside?" Brethren stood in line because of their love
for God and their thirst to hear God's words preached by the
Executive Minister. "Every time our Brother is here dedicat-
ing chapels, it's always a great blessing. It's very spiritual and
that's something that we should always look forward to," said
Therone Cleveland who traveled from Seattle, Washington.
Not a single empty chair could be found. The sanctuary
and overf!o"" rOOTllS ""prp cOTllpletely filled ""ith brethren and
even guests. John Mohler, who furnished this house of wor-
ship with new pews, attended this special gathering and was
very thankful, "I just appreciate that God's work is spoken
and upheld. 1 just heard God's word proclaimed and that's
what I appreciate."
During the sermon, Brother Eduardo reminded all the
members that 'when we put our trust in God, He' ll help us
through any trial that we may face. It's during these tests that
we should draw closer to God to help us through any obstacle.
It's within these walls of the house of worship where we re-
ceive His blessings. "Why is it so important for us to be zealous
in our services to God? " the Executive Minister asked. "Why is
it highly imperative that we perform all our religious obligations
and obey all the commandments of our Lord God? What we have
read describes what shall transpire on the Judgment Day, concern-
ing the people who will be blessed on that day. And who are they that
shall be blessed? God's chosen servants who will 'remain firm to the
end' ... God's servants who shall keep their faith .. . God's servants
who obey all the commandments of our Lord God. "
The joy that brethren felt this day was contagious. Broth-
er Elbert Rillera, a choir member from Portland said, "It feels
wonderful. Definitely uplifted as far as my faith goes and defi-
nitely strengthened." With a smile on his face Brother Josh-
ua said, "I felt so blessed today that our Executive Minister
was able to come out and dedicate this chapel to God and I
wouldn't have missed it for the world. It's truly an honor to
have been able to attend such an event." And as for Sister
Aimee, her feeling of joy will surely last a lifetime, "Today, I
felt so happy to be part of something so amazing." This house
of worship stands tall in this quiet Portland neighborhood. It
stands as a symbol of hope and a symbol of inspiration for the
members of the Church Of Christ. 0

N A QUIET rural town of Bremerton, Washington, noth-
ing eventful seems to take place. Residents go to and fro
with their daily routines- school, work, and the occasion-
al side trips to the stores. The only bustle that breaks the si-
lence of this city is the hourly whistling of the horn emanating
from the ferry terminal. Other than that, everything remains
the same. So it wouldn' t come as a surprise when nearby resi-
dents began taking interests upon finding out that the Church
Of Christ had bought a former Methodist chapel on the east
side of the city.
It had been almost over 26 years since the local congrega-
tion of Bremerton was established in the Emerald State. Back
then, the members had to drive for a total of three hours to and
from Seattle to attend worship services. Through the tumul-
tuous rain, black ice on the roads, and harsh snowstorms, the
brethren endured them all in order to serve God. Then in 1988,
their prayers were answered, as they were able to acquire their
very own chapel in the heart of their hometown of Bremerton.
No longer did the brethren need to navigate their way
through perilous roads to reach the worship services. With the
gift that had been given to them, they were able to stand as a
local congregation and host their own Church activities such
as evangelical missions and different works of edification. Al-
though they were just starting out with only eight families,
they strived and worked hard. With God's help, they were
able to increase in number in a short amount of time.
Despite the still struggling economy, members of Bremer-
ton did not waver in their faith. As other churches around
them began to shut their doors due to lack of support and
funding, the Iglesia Ni Cristo was going full force in their many
missionary endeavors and other events such as neighborhood
clean-ups and INC Giving. It was during one of these events
being held in their chapel that a realization struck them- they
had outgrown their place of worship. No longer could they all
fit as a congregation in the edifice that they had held dearly for
so many years. It was time to move on.
Maybe it was everyone's tenacity or perhaps it was the
turn of the tide, but one thing's for sure-God was listening to
their prayers. On August 22, 2012, the Church Administration
purchased a property that was owned by St. Luke's Methodist
Church. Nestled on top of the hill, the newly acquired 19, 792
square foot edifice had a sweeping view of the Olympic Moun-
tains. The house of worship sits on a 3.59 acre land. In addition
to that, a 3,290 square foot parsonage was also included.
With a glint of tears in his eyes, Brother Leon Guadiz
could not contain his jubilation. "The brethren are so excited.
Finally, we have a place big enough to help us with all of our
Church functions. We don't have to have some brethren stand
outside in the cold anymore, because we can't all fit inside."
Tests came and pushed everyone to their limit, but the
brethren pursued on. Renovation was to be completed within
three months. In addition, winter season was setting in where
temperature could easily drop below twenty degrees. "It will
take a miracle to finish this, but we will do our best," said
Brother Mike Robinson, the contractor. And with every single
member praying for the success of the renovation, a miracle
did happen in Bremerton.
On January 17, 2013, the immense power of God was
manifested in this humble local congregation of Bremerton.
As the Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo V. Manalo de-
livered his homily and prayed for the sake of the brethren,
tears of joy poured from their eyes. Memories of all the cold
days and long nights of unending trials and tests seem to dis-
sipate into thin air. Even though the dedication took place on
a Thursday morning, brethren forego the routine that seem
to envelop this tiny town to witness a blessing and a miracle.
Truly, God was there in that place that day- watching
over His children, for no amount of human will could have
made that happen. And as the day came to a close, the mem-
bers of the Bremerton Congregation knew that memories of
faithful service to God would have to be made in their new
house of worship. Thus, another chapter begins as they set
their eyes on the future with the Almighty God still at their
side. 9

T WAS ONLY 7 a.m. at the Ramada Conference Center in
Edmonton, Alberta and the lobby was buzzing with ex-
citement. They stood in a line that wrapped around the
hotel lobby, but not a soul was complaining. In fact, they were
all blushing with anticipation because at the end of the line
waited a spiritually-uplifting experience.
When the doors to the worship service venue finally
opened, brethren flooded in and filled all 1,000 seats while
many more lined the walls. It was standing room only. They
quietly meditated to unclog their mind from distractions.
And like freezing cold hands to a fire, the brethren wrap
themselves in the warmth of today's lesson in a worship ser-
vice led by Brother Eduardo V. Manalo.
"We're always afraid of misfortunes and trials that come
in our life but as long as we believe in God, and follow His
commandments, He will be with us, and He will always pro-
tect us," said Brother Aldwin De Guzman. And parents like
Brother Jesse Esperame knew this worship service had greatly
benefitted his teenage son. "It's a good thing for kids to hear
because they learned a lot about how to stay on the right path."
Before meeting the Executive Minister, brethren did a
headcount to make sure their family stood in line together.
The children's eagerness leaked through their faces as they
fanned out their heads and got a glimpse of their spiritual
leader. A leader they love so deeply, and a leader who loves
them back even more.
In his homily, the Executive Minister reminded the faith-
ful that God expects us, His servants from ends of the earth to
"look to [Him], and be saved" (Isa. 45:22). This means placing
our hope in Him as God is a refuge to those who trust in Him
(Ps. 141:8; Nah. 1:7). But for them to avail of these bleSSings,
Brother Eduardo emphasized, God's people need to be righ-
teous and never get tired of obeying Him (Ps. 55:22; II Kings
18:5-7) .
"When the news broke that Brother Eduardo will be com-
ing to Edmonton, I knew I had to beg the Lord God to inspire
Brother Eduardo for a meet-and-greet session after the ser-
vice- giving my family a small chance to meet him," recalled
Brother Genn Marc. His prayers were answered. His son,
Liam got more than a handshake. "Liam raised his hands to-
wards Brother Eduardo and Brother Eduardo picked him up.
I was really shocked when it happened. Next thing I know
he wouldn't go back to me, I called out two to three times
while gently tugging him off. He looked at me and placed his
head on Brother Eduardo's shoulders," Brother Genn Marc
recounted, a little embarrassed but feeling even more blessed
than ever.
The air was thick with affection. Music swept through
the room as the kids sang a Christian song for the Executive
Minister. Some were too young to read their lyrics but it did
not matter because they sang with all of their hearts. "When
you sing for someone really special, you feel that it's different,
because you do your best more," said Sister Jewell Ocomen
who was part of the children's choral group.
Alth()ugh it had only been a couple of weeks into the New
Year, the brethren have already marked it as their favorite day.
The children will remember Brother Eduardo's genuine smile
and tuck that memory neatly in their hearts. Parents will
look back on this day and recall Brother Eduardo's words of
wisdom. They will remember to trust in God when they are on
their knees struggling to find a solution. They will remember
God is just a prayer away when fear keeps them up at night.
They will keep the words of God close to their soul when their
hearts are broken. They will remember God's love imparted
to them through the Executive Minister because it is the kind
of love that will keep them moving onward to salvation. ~

will help them dispel the misery

they march into the future unbowed,
unwavering-not fearing the days to

firmly to their hope. They should
draw inspiration from the words of
Apostle Paul who said: "We have this

ELIGION IS A FORCE in man' s life,
Man tends to spell out the implications
of faith in every aspect of his life, In it he
searches for the meaning of birth, love, pain,
death-all of life,
Taken in historical context, religion has
powerfully affected man through the ages, Its
origin extends as far back in history as we can
trace human activity and as manifested among
people in every part of the world, Religious
beliefs and practices, rites, and ceremonies are
woven into the fabric of great civilizations, and
the study of it is part of any comprehensive
attempt to understand history and society,
Word meaning
Many attempts have been made to define
religion, Some assume that there is a
common element among the great variety of
religions today, and so they seek to provide
a description which can express the essential
nature of religion, Other definitions are
more simply the result of scholarly works in
particular fields like social anthropology. The
dictionary gives simple definitions of religion,
WcbotCI 1::J Tl1.i'i "d N c1.V Intcrnntionnl
Dictionary, states: "Religion (noun) prob, fr,
religare to tie back, '" reverence, piety" , 1, the
personal commitment to and serving of God
or a god with worshipful devotion, conduct in
accord with divine commands esp, as found
in accepted sacred writings or declared by
authoritative teachers" ,"
The above-quoted lexical definition of
religion includes reverence and piety for God,
Men ought to be "bound back" by the "divine
commands found in accepted sacred writings"
or the Bible as "declared by authoritative
teachers," These are the elements of the
meaning of the term, Do these definitions ring
any biblical overtones? Deuteronomy 10:12-13
states: "Now, people of Israel, listen to what
the LORD your God demands of you: Worship
the LORD and do all that he commands, Love
him, serve him with all your heart, and obey
all his laws, I am giving them to you today for
your benefit" (Today's English Version),
God's requirements in the true religion
are clear: reverently fear the Lord God, by
loving Him and walking in all His ways, Serve
Him not half-heartedly but with all one's heart
and with his entire being,
True and false
Wi l l rQ1iSl on h p trl1P because of its
expression of belief in a Deity? Will objective
or outward manifestations of sacrifice,
sacraments, liturgy, and other ascetic
practices make a religion true and acceptable
to God? What should be the basis of the true
religion? In I John 2:3-4, it is explained: "If
we obey God's commands, then we are sure
that we know him, If someone says that he
knows him, but does not obey his commands,
such a person is a liar and there is no truth in
him" (Ibid,),
True religion affirms the supremacy of
the commands of God to man, Indeed, serious
study of the true religion demands reflective
thought about one's own values and set of
practices, Public expressions of beliefs, rituals,
and morality do not make a religion true, God
is so succinct in stating that whoever says that
he knows God but fails to keep and obey His
commandments is a liar, and the truth of the
gospel is not in him, His religion is false, to
put it bluntly, If man deviates from these rules
set by God or partially teach or follow man's
words, his worship is worthless: "It is no use
for them to worship me, because they teach
man-made rules as though they were my
laws!" (Matt 15:9, TEV),
Origin of religion
When did religion start? When did God begin
giving laws to be followed and commands to
be observed? The SCriptures answers: "He told

him, 'You may eat the fruit of any tree in the
garden, except the tree that gives knowledge
of what is good and what is bad. You must not
eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die
the same day'" (Gen. 2:16-17, Ibid.).
What was quoted is the first law ever
given by God for man to observe. Surely it
was, because He was speaking to the first
couple-Adam and Eve-while in the garden
of Eden. He was beginning to educate man
about the true religion.
Did the first couple follow God's
command? Were they faithful to Him? The
first couple knew about God's command
and the consequences if they disobeyed Him.
But they easily succumbed to the subtle and
crafty polemics of Satan who argued that the
real reason for such prohibition was that God
knew that once they ate it, they would be like
Him and knew what was good and was bad
(Gen. 3:1-5) .
Disobedience caused man's fall from the
true religion. God placed a curse upon the soil.
From thereon, man has to struggle to eke out
a living from it. All his life he has to sweat to
master it until his dying day. God also said
that man must go back from where he was
taken-from dust he was taken, to dust he
shall return. Thus death entered into the life
of man (Gen. 3:17-19).
No one is innocent
But why does the whole world still feel the
pain of the chastisement to Adam and Eve?
Why has it permeated through all generations
that have followed after them? Apostle Paul
explains: "As the Scriptures say: 'There is no
one who is righteous, no one who is wise or
who worships God. All have turned away
from God; they have all gone wrong; no one
does what is right, not even one" (Rom. 3:10-
12, Ibid.).
"Now, people of Israel, listen to what the LORD your God demands of
you: Worship the LORD and do all that he commands. Love him, serve
him with all your heart, and obey all his laws. I am giving them to you
today for your benefit."
- Deuteronomy 10:12-13, Today's English Version

No one has ever really followed God's
path. No one has done what is right-
everyone has turned away. No one in all the
world is innocent. Yes, all have sinned. All fall
short of God's glorious ideal. So the judgment
of God lies upon every man-all the world
stands guilty before the Almighty God.
What is God's decision on all sinners?
What is supposed to be the punishment?
Apostle Peter answers us: "But the heavens
and the earth that now exist are being
preserved by the same command of God, in
order to be destroyed by fire. They are being
kept for the day when godless people will be
judged and destroyed . ... But the Day of the
Lord will corne like a thief. On that Day the
heavens will disappear with a shrill noise,
the heavenly bodies will burn up and be
destroyed, and the earth with everything in
it will vanish" (II Pet. 3:7, 10, Ibid.).
God has decreed that the earth and the
heavens be stored away for a great fire on
Judgment Day, when all ungodly men will
perish.

N INVITATION FROM our neighbor
for a Bible study in 1994 was the start of
it all. Thinking then that the doctrines
of the Iglesia Ni Cristo and the Catholic Church
were similar, my family and I allowed Bible
studies to be held at our home. Brother Erdy
Mangaron introduced us to Brother Elmer
Miranda, an evangelical worker. Listening
to one lesson after the other, I noticed that
the teachings of the Iglesia Ni Cristo are all
read from the Bible. The teachings of the
Catholic Church are far different. This made
me curious, more so when I heard the biblical
teaching that our Lord Jesus Christ is man.
My husband, Cesar, could not accept this
teaching and so he stopped attending and
tried to persuade me and our children to do
the same. But 1 wanted to tind out more about
the Iglesia Ni Cristo, so I accepted an invitation
to attend the worship service.

"We thank God so much
for calling us to the true Church
and it is our fervent prayer that our
loved ones and friends
be enlightened also to become
members ofthe true Church,"
Over the course of the Bible studies,
I learned more truths that made me
decide to leave the Catholic faith. Image
worship, the belief about the Trinity,
the deity of Christ, to name a few are
all unbiblical teachings. I made up my
mind to join the Church but I
wanted my husband and my
children to enter the Church
with me. Brothers Miranda and
Mangaron advised me to pray
to God for help.
My relationship with my
husband became strained be-
cause he ignored me and re-
fused to talk to me when he
learned that I had decided to
enter the Church. But in spite
of this, I continuously prayed
hard for him to be enlightened.
My heart was filled with
gladness when, one day, my husband
arrived home telling me that he intended
to continue listening to the doctrines of
the Iglesia Ni Cristo. I didn't know then
that all that time, he was reviewing the
verses taught by Brother Miranda. My
children soon followed. Eventually,
my husband decided to remove all the
graven images and statues in our house.
On July 18, 1995, my husband and
I were baptized and a few years later,
we accepted the office of deacon and
deaconess. By God's grace, all our
children are officers of the Church, save
for Cesar Jr. who is an active member:
my two daughters, Cristina and
Clarissa, are finance officers; Czarina
and Crizele Joyce are PNK (children'S
worship service) officers, and our sons
Carelle and Christopher hold duties in
the local congregation of Valenzuela,
Metro Manila North, Philippines. We
thank God so much for calling us to the
true Church and it is our fervent prayer
that our loved ones and friends be
enlightened also to become members of
the true Church. 0

tao.
kakanin, iinumin at daramtin.
Tahasang
Bagkus,
Panginoong Jesucristo: "Huwag kayong matakot, munting
Panginoong Jesucristo (Col. 1:12-14, Ibid.).
Cristo (Gawa 20:28, Lamsa Translation).

gawa 0 pagsunod (Sant. 2:14, 17, 19, 24, Ibid.). Kung hindi,
ang gayong pananampalataya ay walang kabuluhan, patay
at walang ibubungang kaligtasan.
inyong tinanggap at pinananatilihan hanggang ngayon.
15:1-2, NPV) .
sa anumang paraan ay hindi magbibigay-daan sa iba;
magiging mapagsinungaling sila at: mapaghanap ng gulo
at hindi nababahala sa paggawa ng imoralidad. Magiging
magagaspang ang kanilang ugali at malulupit, at tutuyain
nila ang mga nagsisikap na maging mabuti. Pagtataksilan

At
Jesus" (Fil. 4:6, 19, Magandang BaIita).
kawalang-pag-asa at kawalang-magagawa. Mayroong lunas

Diyos: "Ipinagmamalaki namin kayo
Alam

17; 21:1-4).
materyal, karunungang panlupa, kapangyarihan,

Abala man ang isang Iglesia Ni

(Heb. 6:11-12,
New Pilipino Version)
(may-asawa), KADIWA 0 Binhi (binata't dalaga).
Yahweh dumaing, Sa Tagapagligtas, ako'y dumalangin;
Pagkat siya lamang ang lunas sa akin." (Awit 142:4-5, MB)
ngunit palibhasa'y taong tulad niyang may pangangailangan
NPV). Mananatili siyang masigla sa paglilingkod at
pagsamba sa Diyos. Sasamahan siya ng Diyos sa kaniyang
buhay, anum an ang mangyari.

LTHOUGH THE ALMIGHTY
God permitted that the ancient
Israelites in the kingdom of
Judah be taken into Babylonian
captivity in 586 B.C.E., brought
about by their moral and spiritual
decadence, He consoled them through
these comforting words: " ... Restrain
your voice from weeping and your
eyes from tears ... there is hope for
your future" (Jer. 31:16-17, New
International Version).
"There is hope for your future" is a
very timely encouragement nowadays
in the wake of current economic
woes, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods,
tornadoes, snow storms, drought,
terrorism, war, chaos, and poverty in
various parts of the globe, rendering a
bleak future to many.
No doubt, to constantly think
of the undesirable things in life will
not bring peace and tranquility to
one's self. The following verses attest
to this, thus: "For sighing comes to
me instead of food; my groans pour
out like water. What I feared has
come upon me; what I dreaded has
happened to me. I have no peace, no
quietness; I have no rest, but only
turmoil" (Job 3:24-26, Ibid.).
That is why on the part of God's
true servants, what they should
do, amidst seemingly inescapable
unfavorable conditions, is to draw
consolation from the Heavenly Father,
as what King David encouragingly
expressed, thus: "Only God gives
inward peace, and I depend on
him" (Ps. 62:5, Contemporary English
Version).
To have such a firm conviction
that "only God gives inward peace"
boosts the confidence of His people to
perceive global events in a different
perspective no matter how grim they
may be. They \Ni ll a ]\NrlY" ~ h i n k of the

sisters, whenever trouble comes your
way, let it be an opportunity for joy.
For when your faith is tested, your
endurance has a chance to grow. So
let it grow, for when your endurance
is fully developed, you will be strong
in character and ready for anything"
(Jean.e," 1:2-4, Iuid.).
Indeed, servants of God have
reason to be joyful even when various
trials come their way for these will

bring out from them endurance,
steadfastness, and patience, making
them "ready for anything."
'They are good or us
Apostle Pau 1 too, in hi s epistle, echoed
the same counsel to Christians when
they run into trials and problems:
"We can rejoice, too, when we r un
into problems and tri als, for we know
that they are good for us- they help
us learn to endure. And endurance
develops strength of character in
us, and character strengthens our
con f i dent exp ect<l ti o n of sa l vr:l tion .
And this expectati on will not
disappoint us. For we know how
dearly God loves us, because he has
given us the Holy Spirit to fill our
hearts with his love" (Rom. 5:3-5,
Ibid.).
When the same apostle spoke
about problems and trials, he helped
God's servants realize that they
are "good for us" for they produce
endurance, leading to the strength
of character and confident hope
of eternal salvation. Hence, God's
people, in the midst of troubles and
difficulties, should not lose hope for
all these, if dealt with properly, would
be for their own advantage- for their
attainment of salvation.
'Cheer up'
There's no wonder that the apostles
were able to convey hope, confidence,
and optimism to their fellow
Christians for they received a great
deal of understanding from the Savior
Himself who said, thus: " ... Here on
earth you will have many trials and
sorrows; but cheer up, for I have
overcome the world" (John 16:33,
Living Bible).
"Cheer up" was the Lord Jesus
Christ's motivating advice to His
disciples in facing the multitude of
trial s and sorrows, setting Himself as
their role model in doing so-"r have
overcome the world," He said. In
spite of all that had happened to Him,
He did not give up obeying God. True
Christians today, should likewise
cheer up and not be discouraged
when facing troubl es, for in the end,
they will be rewarded with the peace
that the Lord Jesus Christ promised
them: "I am leaving you with a gift-
peace of mind and heart! And the
peace I give isn't fragile like the peace
the world gives. So don't be troubled
or afraid" (John 14:27, Ibid.).
Nothing compares to this peace
r e s e r ved by Christ for His worthy
servants. What the world offers is a
momentary peace while that which
the Savior promised is an enduring

one, a great and precious reward that
man should truly aspire for.
We will be saved
Those who are guaranteed of
receiving this are the ones who do
not lose their confidence (Heb. 10:35,
God's Word) that they obtained by way
of the precious grace of redemption
through the Lord Jesus Christ's blood.
Attesting to the right for salvation
of those redeemed, Apostle Paul
assuredly declares, thus: "But God
has shown us how much he loves us-
it was while we were still sinners that
Christ died for us! By his blood we
are now put right with God; how
much more, then, will we be saved by
him from God's anger!" (Rom. 5:8-9,
Today's English Version).
God's anger, as mentioned, will be
revealed on the great day of the Lord.
The prophet Zephaniah attests to the
certainty of that day: "The great day
of the LORD is near-near and coming
quickly. Listen! The cryan the day of
the LORD will be bitter, the shouting
of the warrior there ... . Neither their
silver nor their gold will be able to
save them on the day of the LORD's
wrath. In the fire of his jealousy the
whole world will be consumed, for
he will make a sudden end of all who
live in the earth" (Zeph. 1:14, 18, NIV).
Man's helplessness and power-
lessness will all the more be revealed
when God ultimately shows His
fierce anger for the whole worl d and
all who live in it will be consumed by
fire on the day of Judgment (II Pet. 3:7,
10, New King James Version). Hence,
that man be covered by Christ's
redemption is of supreme importance.
Yet, man can only receive this sacred
grace within the Church Of Christ,
as what Apostle Paul teaches, thus:
"Take heed therefore to yourselves and
to all the flOCK over which the Holy
Spirit has appOinted you overseers, to
feed the church of Christ which he has

purchased with his blood" (Acts 20:28,
Lamsa Translation).
The promised future reward
This biblical truth is what truly boosts
the confidence of genuine members
of the Church Of Christ or Iglesia
Ni Cristo-that they are fortunately
privileged to be saved on Judgment
Day. Hence, no matter what their
problems in life are-be these with
their job, livelihood, health, and
family-they do not lose courage.
They cheer up in times of trials, firmly
believing that as they continue serving
God amid hardships, the more they
are making it certain that salvation
will be theirs on Judgment Day.
They hope for the promised
future reward-the things that
cannot be seen and that last forever.
Apostle Paul declared as to what
true Christians will certainly inherit:
"We never give up. Our bodies are
gradually dying, but we ourselves are
being made stronger each day. These
little troubles are getting us ready for
an eternal glory that will make all our
troubles seem like nothing. Things
that are seen don't last forever, but
things that are not seen are eternal.
That's why we keep our minds on the
things that cannot be seen" (II Cor.
4:16-18, CEV).
Worldly things, including
sufferings and afflictions brought
by poverty, sickness, and others, are
rendered temporary, brief, and fleeting.
In contrast, the promised reward for
members of the Church Of Christ who
do not lose their confidence or sacred
right for salvation is beyond compare.
The rich blessings that God keeps
for them will never perish, spoil, or
fade away. Apostle Peter revealed
this through his epistle, thus: "Let
us give thanks to the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of
his great mercy he gave us new life
by raising Jesus Christ from death.
This fills us with a living hope, and
so we look forward to possessing
the rich blessings that God keeps for
his people. He keeps them for you in
heaven, where they cannot decay or
spoil or fade away. They are for you,
who through faith are kept safe by
God's power for the salvation which
is ready to be revealed at the end of
time" (I Pet. 1:3-5, TEV).
'I will guide you'
In their earthly pilgrimage, where
calamities, hardships, and wickedness
abound and grow even more severe,
the fruitful servants of God shall hold
on to this promise made by Him that
His guidance and protection will
always be with them: "The LORD says,
'I will guide you along the best
pathway for your life. I will advise
you and watch over you. .. . Many
sorrows come to the wicked, but
unfailing love surrounds those who
trust the LORD'" (Ps. 32:8, 10, NLT) .
Indeed, God's unfailing love is
what true Iglesia Ni Cristo members
extremely desire, for, with His love and
abiding care, they will make it to the
end, achieving what they are hoping
for-salvation and life everlasting in
God's heavenly kingdom. e

LCual es la naturaleza de la vida

Las hierbas y flores se
marchitan y se secan. Lo mismo
es cierto del hombre. EI hombre
no puede jactarse de su juventud,
su fuerza, su conocimiento, 0 sus
riquezas porque su propia vida
esta en peligro en todo momento.
No tiene el poder de garantizar
su seguridad. Esta verdad es
atestiguada por el Ap6stol Pablo
en I Corintios 15:31, 30: "Porque,

primer as cosas ya pasaron" (Ibid.).
Pero, Lqmenes son los que
pertenecen al Senor Jesucristo? LA
quienes asegura Dios una muerte
bendita? LQuienes estan seguros
de una vida feliz? LQuienes son
los que ciertamente moraran en la
Ciudad Santa pre parada por Dios
y por nuestro Senor Jesucristo? LA
que Iglesia deben unirse, para que
la muerte no prevalezca sobre ellos?
El Senor mismo senala en Mateo
16:18, asi: "Y Ie digo, usted es Pedro,
y en esta roea que construire mi
iglesia, y los poderes de muerte no
prevaleceran en contra de ella" (Ibid.).
Los que Ie pertenecen a nuestro
Senor Jesucristo, se encuentran en la
Iglesia que Elllama " mi Iglesia." Ellos
son garantizados por el Senor que el
poder de la muer.te no prevalecera
contra ellos. L Cual es este poder de
la muerte que no prevalecera sobre
aquellos que pertenecen a 10 que Cristo
llama "mi Iglesia?" Esta es la segunda
muerte-la muerte en ellago de fuego
(Apocalipsis 20:14).

life: here and now and the thereafter"

Pasugo, January 1996)
"mi I esia."
