Theme: Clean and Green Singapore

Question: What would it be like if Singapore is dirty? Poem 1

Look Outside, see the trees Watch the owers in the breeze

Things won't be like this in a year or two If polluting is all we do

Seize the night Seize the day

Things won't always be this way Thousands of people are dying In the night you hear children crying Let's stop the war

Our people are sore The world can't help itself Who cares about your wealth Help me to help you

Show the world what you can do.

Summary This poem illustrates a scene of Singapore being green and lled with plant life. The poet then says that Singapore will change if we dont stop polluting it. He says that we should enjoy the environment we have now as it will change one day. Many people are suffering because of the damages caused by polluting the environment. The poet says that we should stop polluting the environment; No one cares about how earning money through methods that pollute the earth makes you rich. Instead we should show people how much we care about the environment and stop polluting it.

Poem 2

One of my cherished wishes is to visit the 'Lion City' of Singapore

It is a city where I have always dreamt to go for a tour.

The city is small but is very successful

The streets are clean and green It is a city that represents life

I always dream that someday I will visit this spectacular city Though I do not know when I will get that golden opportunity.

Summary This poem describes a foreigner view and impression of Singapore. The foreigner thinks that Singapore is very small but still successful country. It is also very clean and green, meaning that the streets are not lled rubbish and plant life can be found easy everywhere. He thinks that the city represent life, stating the Singapore is a very comfortable and good environment to live in. He dreams of visiting Singapore, showing that he has a very good impression of Singapore. He claims that Singapore is a spectacular city, and thinks that getting to visit it is a very good opportunity.

Poem 3

Where are the birds that used to dot the sky?

They're not here anymore, and I have to wonder why.

Where are the sh that used to swim in this stream? I can't see them anymore. What does that mean?

Where are the frogs that used to croak around this lake? I can't hear them anymore. There must be some mistake. I wish there was a clock whose hands I could rewind. We might have saved these creatures if we'd just had more time. Time to make people see how we're damaging our Earth, Time to realise what it all was truly worth.

But the animals are disappearing at an alarming rate. If we don't nally band together, it may really be too late.

Summary This poem illustrates a scene of Singapore being polluted. Animals migrate upon seeing their homes polluted. The poet hopes that he could rewind time to save the creatures. He wanted to show people how we are causing damage to our own planet Earth. He believes that it will be too late if we don't take the initiative. He is condent that these creatures could be saved in time.

Poem 4

Man made pollution and garbage has created dirty city!

A clean city is a dream now due to accumulation of dirt

Never seems to be cleared by ever increasing congestion

Strangulating all to gasping level of breathing everyday!

Overowing drainage vents giving smell of toilet eternal Mixing with carbon smoke of vehicles spread atmosphere

Impossible to breathe clean air ever in the midst of hell By technological developments risking everyones health!

Dirty cities are the growth of modern world of civilisation

Making linen dirty a common feature everywhere to bear Along with the riches that closes eyes for such matters As time for enjoyment has become shorter in the fast life!

Clean city has become a dream of intellectuals and critics Making them long for the day of healthy city life sometime In the future world of efcient activities in all spheres of life That time only has to bring about before the world wakes up!

Poem 5

It Was Beautiful

It was Green and Clean.

The smell of Fresh Air

The sound of the river owing I love everything happening there.

I pinched myself to see if it was real. That was when I realised I was dreaming.

Couldn't it be real!

Now all wasted. The colour is just awful.

The smell of pollution is killing me The sound of trafc is giving me a headache. I wanted my perfect dream to come through. But again, I was dreaming!

He was dreaming about the smell of fresh air and the sound of the clean owing river. He was loving the scenery and the state of cleanliness the environment that he is in. Unfortunately, he

realised that it was just a dream. He was disappointed about the current state of dirtiness of the environment. He was hoping that his dream would come true one day. Literally.

Poem 6

Broken bottles and charred pieces of glass

Wadded up newspapers tossed on the grass

Pouring of concrete and tearing out trees

This is the environment that surrounds me?

Poisons and insecticides sprayed on our food Oceans lling with thick oil crude

All sea life destined to a slow awful doom These are the things we are to consume?

Mills pumping out iron expelling yellow fumes

Airlines emitting caustic gases from fuels Weapons of destruction tested at desolate sites And this is the air that's to sustain life?

There has to be something that someone can do Like raise the awareness to those around you That if we don't heed the problem at hand It's your life that's at stake, the destruction of man.

Summary This poem illustrates a scene of a highly polluted city, which could be Singapore in the near future if Singaporeans would not stop polluting the environment. He wrote that the food are polluted with poison and insecticides. He also wrote that the polluted air will not sustain life. He believes that there has to be a solution to the problem, like raising awareness to people around you so as to have a clean and green Singapore.
