TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

Best Kept Village
Last year we in Tarporley were delighted to once more win our group of the Best Kept Village competition. In most judging categories we scored very highly. Particularly singled out for praise were the shops, especially the Diamond Jubilee window decorations, Rising Sun and Foresters Arms. Away from High Street the churchyards, cemetery, cottage hospital, bowling green and allotments received favourable comment. On the downside, the major problem last year was weeds. With a total failure of the CWaC treatment programme and the wet weather, weed growth was rampant in public areas throughout the village. This year we hope to do even better but will need the help of villagers if we are to achieve this aim. The parish council considers the competition to be a useful indicator of the general health of the village and takes seriously the business of maintaining the village as an attractive place to live in and to visit. We therefore appeal to all members of the community to look around them and to let the parish council / Street Scene Working Group know if anything strikes them as being wrong or in need of improvement. Contacts are given opposite. If you feel sufficiently strongly about a particular project we might even encourage you to have a go yourselves. In many communities residents or businesses have adopted small areas or features and set about maintaining or improving them, for instance by repainting or tidying and planting. Such projects might only take a small amount of time but can make a big difference to the feel of the community.

The problem of dog fouling has raised its head again, Our PCSO has powers to issue penalty notices to offenders. So please clean up. Public places include not only pavements and roads but also any open grassed areas, footpaths, roadside verges etc.. Persistent offenders are reminded that action will be taken and that conviction can result in a fine of 1000. In some cases there is an apparently malicious intent, which is clearly a display of deliberate anti-social behaviour and will be treated as such. The CWaC Dog Warden can be contacted on 0300 1238123 and fouling may be reported for clean-up on 0300 1237026 or by completing an animal fouling report form on www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk

A flipping fantastic day

The reception class at Tarporley CE Primary School had a fantastic Shrove Tuesday in February. The children spent the day writing recipes for pancakes and then following those instructions to make the real things. Whilst some children spent time trying to flip the pancakes, others took part in a pancake race! Eventually they were allowed to find out how delicious their creations were.

Peregrine Watch

At the beginning of April a group of volunteers will begin a 24-hour watch on the pair of Peregrine Falcons which regularly nest on the crags below Beeston Castle. This protection is necessary as the eggs and chicks can be stolen by egg collectors or for sale abroad where the birds are highly prized for hunting. If you are interested in helping please come to the meeting which is being held at Meadow Bank Farm, Broxton (a few hundred yards south of the Broxton roundabout on the A41) on 26th March at 7.30pm.

The Daycare Trust has just produced a survey on the average cost of childcare. Nursery places and After School Clubs are now 77% more expensive than 10 years ago. The average cost for one child in full time Nursery is 11,000 per annum. After school clubs can cost around 50 per week per child. Child minders are slightly less expensive. It is proposed that the child to Nursery Assistant ratio should be increased for the under twos, but there is little evidence that any savings will be passed onto parents. But what if you have more than one child that needs more than 25 hours a week childcare? I met a lady recently, with 3 children all under school age. They all got chicken pox and she had to take two weeks holiday leave to look after them. Shes exhausted and feels she has let down her company despite paying nearly 25,000 per year for all her childcare, which does not include school holidays. If you are in this situation, what are the choices? A Nanny or Mothers Help in the home will have the same qualifications as a Nursery Assistant, but much more experience of providing care on a more one to one basis.

Traditional childcare services in your home

Residential Daily Temporary Full Time Part Time
So imagine. getting ready for work without the stress of rushing off to nursery and school not having the stress of rushing back to school and nursery on time after a hard days work arriving home to find a tidy house, the laundry done and maybe some shopping and food preparation. the children winding down from the fun of their daily activities or doing homework they have had tea and a bath, and are ready and waiting for their parents to spend some quality time with them before bed the huge value of your child spending the first few years of its life growing up in familiar and comforting surroundings, let alone the convenience to the whole family. A happy and calm household, week after week after week! Nannies and Mothers Helps do not charge by the number of children they look after. If you need full time childcare for more than one child, the cost can be under 20,000 gross a year. An Au Pair can work between 25-35 hours a week from 70 - 100 per week Please call us if you would like advice and we will do our utmost to help you.

School puts down roots alongside river

Youngsters from Tarporley Primary School planted dozens of trees with Cheshire Wildlife Trust alongside the river Weaver, thanks to the Co-operative Membership. The green-fingered gang of 12 children and teacher Richard Clark joined the charitys People and Wildlife Officer, Nick Rowles at the Dutton Park Farm reserve. The Dutton Viaduct which towers over the reserve has been home to peregrine falcons in the past. A variety of native trees including oak, birch and rowan were planted a valuable addition in what is Britains least wooded county. Cheshire currently has just 6.4% of woodland cover, compared to a wider average of around 10%. Richard Clark from Tarporley Primary School added: It was a fabulous experience for the children who thoroughly enjoyed the morning. Knowledge and awareness of environmental issues is an important part of the primary curriculum and getting hands on brings it to life. The role of the wildlife trust is vital as it provides access to expertise and experiences. A recent announcement by the Government has secured public forests like Delamere for the future, however Cheshire Wildlife Trust has concerns that plans for the HS2 northern Y route may reduce resources of ancient woodlands at a number of sites.

Charity helps parents deal with lifes everyday stresses

A parents role can be rewarding but can also have is challenges. Home-Start West Cheshire has been helping parents build better lives for their children for seven years now. One mother, Sharon DaviesPatrick, who lives in Norley, was referred to Homestart by Tarporley Health Centre. Here she tells her story. My GP suggested contacting Home-Start when I needed extra support after suffering a panic attack caused by prolonged stress. I was matched with their volunteer Pam and we got on well. I looked forward to her weekly visits when we would have a coffee and chat for a couple of hours. I was able to have some time for myself while Pam was visiting, mainly getting the house clean and tidy. Knowing I had extra support when I needed it made a positive difference to my outlook. The compassion and understanding I received spurred me on to believe that things would get better. Being a new mum can be an overwhelming experience, especially for the first time, given that you have no idea what to expect. The isolation many new mums feel affects confidence, not only in the ability to cope with the day-to-day demands of a new baby, but also the confidence to get out and about again. Pam encouraged me to fulfil personal goals and I slowly started to get back on track again. Home-Start for me was an invaluable aid in coping with adjusting to my role as a new mother in difficult circumstances. Their caring and flexible approach together with Pams friendship and support helped me tremendously, and I am glad to say we keep in touch for a coffee and chat. If you would like to know more about volunteering with Home-Start West Cheshire, call 01606 782888. The next training course starts 16th April. www.homestartwestcheshire.co.uk Sharon is pictured with her daughter Anna 36 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.tarporleytalk.com

earning more than 150,000 per annum, but the use of pension contributions is tax efficient for all of us, including employers who have 31st March as their year-end. If your taxable income takes you into the 40% tax bracket, making a pension contribution could bring you back into the standard rate of tax i.e. 20%. Someone once said pensions werent born yesterday and of course they were not! They are long term commitments to which the vast majority of us dont contribute nearly enough to fund a financially sustainable retirement. Will we always have the incentive of tax relief on our pension contributions, I dont know, but its certainly worth making the most of it whilst we have! If you havent yet utilised your annual ISA allowances, theres still time to do so, either by cash or equity

Last month I talked about the importance of making sure that your ISAs were invested in the right place.
I wanted to continue the theme this month as we enter the final month of the tax year to remind you of the various tax efficient allowances which are available to you. Your pension is one of the key areas to check, because of a number of changes to the regulations which reduce the availability of tax relief. The top rate of income tax will fall from 50% to 45% from 6th April, and if you are paying this additional rate of tax, imposed on earnings above 150,000, you should consider making the maximum pension contribution possible to take advantage of the extra relief. Now, I appreciate that the vast majority of us are not

Legion stages more events in

At a specially called meeting in November the Tarporley Royal British Legion Club members were informed by the committee that it was losing money and unless its fortunes were turned around it might have to close, writes Ernest Boynes . This would not only be a disaster for the Legion Club members but for the village as a whole who would lose an important but under used asset. Club members decided to put on events that would attract public audiences. A disco, talks on local history and a number of other events were arranged and the response of the public has been very encouraging. Regular events such as Country Dancing, Bingo, Zumba Gold, Weight Watchers, Dominoes and indoor bowls are proving to be popular, but it is the special events as shown below which should prove to be great attractions. The hall is available for hire at very reasonable rates and a bar is available if required. All who read Tarporley Talk are encouraged to think of Tarporley British Legion when they next consider putting on an event. If the Legion Club should close who knows what will happen to this very valuable site. Details of what is going on at the Legion can be found on the Branch website, www. britishlegion.org.uk/branches/tarporley

Tarporley Royal British Legion Club Painting Party

Members of the Tarporley Allotments spent two days over the weekend painting the interior of the Tarporley British Legion Club. Bill Harrison, secretary of the allotments said we had a super group of hardworking plot holders who worked their socks off over the two days to begin the process of brightening up the Club. We still have a way to go, but with more help from members we hope to hire out the room more in the future. With the new paint job it will be much better for live music, discos, childrens parties, weddings and christenings. There is an Eagles tribute band on Friday 12th April, raising money for Cystic Fibrosis. Other activities include a mixed media art class on Monday afternoons after Easter. The Take Five coffee mornings have restarted, for mums and dads after taking children to school. There is an open darts tournament planned for April. Many more evenings are planned and we hope that the community will support the revamped Legion.

Parish council listens to legions plight

The Parish Council listened to an informative talk from committee members of the British Legion Club at their March meeting. The Club has been struggling financially and has recruited new committee members to increase the events planned and the use of the hall by the community. All villagers are welcome to come in and use the bar, dart board, snooker and pool table in the evening. Membership, not a requirement, is also available for those who wish to support the British Legion and Club, at 17 per year. The main hall, toilets and foyer of the Club have been redecorated and new curtains fitted. This has all been done by volunteers; to produce an economical fully licenced venue that villagers would want to use for events, such as fundraisers, live music, meetings, childrens parties, christenings, weddings, wakes and much more. The main hall costs 10 an hour to hire and special rates are negotiable for charity events and where the Club can benefit from increased bar takings. The main hall is used every week by Pilates on a Tuesday morning and Thursday evening, Zumba on a Thursday morning and NCT mums and toddlers group on a Friday morning. Regular monthly Country and Western nights and weekly Prize Bingo, as well as the popular darts tournaments continue. The Club is open in the evenings on Monday 7.30-10.30, Tuesday closed, Wednesday 7.3010.30, Thursday 7.30-11.00, Friday 6.30-12.00, Saturday 6.30-12.00, Sunday 6.30-11.00. Local wedding....at last!

Jennifer Horabin and David Wood finally tie the knot after being together for 12 years and engaged for 11 years. They live in Tarporley and married on Jennifers 40th birthday, Monday 25th February, at Willington Hall. The ring bearers were their two boys Harry Wood aged six, who attends Tarporley Primary School, and George Wood, who is nearly four and attends Ashton Hayes nursery. Jennifers hen party left a trail of pink feathers up Tarporley High Street and mainly comprised of cocktails at the Piste! Their honeymoon was at Anglesey.

with Angela Bartlett
Q. I have had several sets of semi-permanent eyelashes in various salons and lash bars, but I always find it difficult explaining the look that I want to achieve and end up feeling disappointed with the outcome. Can you help? A . Anything to do with appearance is incredibly subjective, even if there is a look book in the establishment to help you identify what you want to achieve it may not always turn out the same on you. Terminology, with phrases such as natural, well-defined or glamorous can mean something totally different to one person than to another. There are standard measurements for the individual false eyelashes which can be helpful when trying to explain what you want. The lashes are categorised by their length, thickness and curve so always ask what lashes have been used on you and make a note of these and then compare them with the information on our newsletter page semi- permanent eyelash chart on our website www.angelabartlett.co.uk to help you. Q. Why is eating sugar bad for your skin?

Angela Bartlett, Beauty Expert working with Alex Polizzi in The Fixer, BBC2

A. Eating excess sugar raises your blood sugar level resulting in a process called glycation which means that sugar molecules attach to proteins in the skin. The proteins they attach to include collagen and elastin which are the fibres that give the skin its suppleness, youth and elasticity. The sugar molecules cause the collagen and elastin fibres to become stiff and weak resulting in skin wrinkling, sagging and loss of skin radiance. So if you want to keep your skin youthful, stay away from the chocolate this Easter!

Look up....
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesnt require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing whats needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floor space in an average home. So shouldnt you be making the most of it? And thats where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And thats all it does. Its not a generic building company, and its not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. Its what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...Our average job is about

The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...Its such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need, added Adam. FOOTBALL TALK... TARPORLEY VICS FC

Vics suffer semi final heartache

Tarporley Vics First Team suffered defeat in Crewe & District FA Cup Semi Final against Sandbach United. The game was a see-saw affair as Tarporley Vics took an early 2-0 lead only to see Sandbach come back into the game and then take a 4-2 lead into the closing stages. Tarporley Vics then claimed two more goals to draw level only to suffer defeat thanks to a last minute Sandbach winner. On a positive note the First Team returned from Malpas with a fine 2-0 away win which marked the return to action of Henry Buckley, who has missed a full year due to a knee injury. Tarporley Vics First Team did suffer another defeat to Golbourne and the squad must now look to put the Cup defeat behind them and claim valuable points as they look to claim a mid-table position at the end of the season. Tarporley Vics Reserves defeated Winnington Reserves in their only Crewe & District League First Division game and remain at the top of the League. In the round-robin AJ Cooke Trophy Tarporley Vics Reserves beat Duddon 3-0 however lost to Crewe FC Reserves and Rudheath Social Reserves. Urban and rural collide in MCs debut solo show

CountryBoys Struggle
by Maxwell Golden Monday 22nd April, 7.30pm Dunham On The Hill Youth Club WA6 OLX
Produced by The Contact Theatre Manchester

CountryBoys Struggle has been devised in collaboration with Martin Stannage and Baba Israel. Writer/Performer Maxwell Golden says: Its about what its like living in a rural area and wanting to make urban music, then moving to the city and finding its not what you expect especially when your heart and soul is on the beaches and with the community you grew up in. Although it is performed predominantly through the aesthetic of modern UK Hip Hop theatre, the real emotion underlying the story is always of upmost importance. CountryBoys Struggle integrates music, poetry, MCing, as well as physical comedy to reflect both rural and urban environments. Contacts Artistic Director Baba Israel says: Im really excited about directing Maxwell Goldens CountryBoys Struggle. Maxwell is a fantastic artist with a background in hip hop and spoken word but also in clown and physical theatre and hes going to bring together those skills to tell a really important story about a young man and his journey. l CountryBoys Struggle is on stage at Dunham on the Hill Youth Club on Monday 22nd April. Call 01244 972835.

CountryBoys struggle is a unique debut solo show, written and performed by Maxwell Golden. The show follows an MCs journey from the cliffs of Cornwall to the streets of London. Playing over 30 characters and mixing Hip Hop, movement and comedy, this is your first chance to catch a tour-de-force performance.

Peckforton and Beeston WI We learnt at our March meeting that the number of butterflies in this country has greatly reduced in recent years due to habitat degradation. Great efforts are being made to try and conserve or restore stocks, one reason being to help with pollination of plants. There are 27 breeding species in Cheshire and we learnt what they look like and where to try to spot them. Unfortunately the grant funding for the Butterfly Conservation Charity has been slashed greatly in the last few years and it is getting harder to accomplish all the charity wish to achieve. On 3rd April meeting Keith Cotton is going to talk to us about 300 years of Tower Clockmaking and we would welcome any guests who would like to join us at Peckforton Village Rooms at 7.30pm. Did you spot him? He is on page 60 by the Sandstone Run.
