April 28, 2013

Over the past several months, we have written countless articles and shared many thoughts about the need to look beyond ourselves. There have been numerous sermons about the vision or mission of the church here at Fifth Avenue. I have laid a foundation that all we seek to do is reach people for Christ and bring glory to God through our lives. I have sought to help you better understand why we are moving our second service to the Fellowship hall for worship. We are seeking to create an environment that might make outsiders feel more welcome and yet still hold to the truth of Gods Word. So we seek to create a worship service where we are not confined by pews, and we can creatively use other means of getting the message out about Jesus. We seek to build community, intimacy and become more relational during our contemporary service. We want people to be more engaged as a participant. We envision a more open format to this service, often times trying to work through the tough issues we face in life and allowing time to even ask and answer questions. We are the church! You and I! The church worships in a building where every room was designed from the beginning to bring glory to God. That is why any room can be used then for worship and in no way is it disrespectful to make this move. So on May 5th, we will offer our first Sunday worship in the basement at 10:30. We hope you will pray for this endeavor and ask that you support it by your attendance. Just as reminder, we offer two traditional services, one at 8:00 am and one at 6:00 pm. May God bless, Brad

THOUGHTS FROM BRAD

Hi Everyone! I want to remind those who pledged to purchase chairs for our fellowship hall to make their donation by May 5th if possible. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. If you didnt sign up but still want to help with this need, see Brad today. The chairs are $30 per chair. For those who helped with moving office equipment and wiring during the renovation of our secretarys office, we say thanks to God! Last week we began our Hanging in the Hood sermon series and each of your families was given a large magnet to stick on your refrigerator as a reminder to do whatever it takes to know and reach your neighbors. We hope that you recognize Gods plan to use you to take the Gospel across the street. Do you know them yet by name? What might you be able to do to better these relationships? I wonder why God placed you in your neighborhood. Was it by chance you ended up where you are or did God place you there for His glory? All important questions, dont you think? Today we are using the text of 1 John 3:11-19. Let it resonate in your heart as we ponder what it means to truly love one another. In His Service, Brad

BITS FROM BRO. DAVE

SENIOR SAINTS IN THE SMOKIES: There is still time to register for this great gathering, which is held on the Johnson University campus in Knoxville, Tennessee. The program includes instruction and entertainment, as well as ample leisure time. (This year the Florida Boys quartet will be singing and Marshall Leggett will be speaking.) We are attending May 27-31. We will be utilizing one of our church vans for transportation. Travel to and from the event always provides a great time of fellowship. If you have questions or would like registration information, see me! You can view a poster on our main bulletin board.
SUNDAY EVENINGS IN THE SANCTUARY:

Our character from the Friends of Paul series, this week (April 28), will be Apollos, The Orator. Our final two messages, in the series, will deal with Philip and Demas. If you are not involved in a small group, on Sunday evenings, I encourage you to join us. Communion is available for those who desire. Please be reminded that we now have activities for children each Sunday evening. WEDNESDAYS: On Wednesday, May 1, we will begin a new series of lessons on the book of Colossians. I want to invite you to join either the 10:00 am or 6:30 pm study groups. We cover the same material in each session. FINAL THOUGHT: Prejudice is a great time saver . . . it allows one to form opinions without getting to know the facts.

Last week in Childrens Church we learned about Jacob and Esau. From their story we learned that we need to be careful about the choices that we make. Also, we learned about how we should treat our brothers and sisters, even if they are different than we are. Next Sunday will be our first time having Childrens Church on the third floor! I am very excited about the new possibilities we have to grow as a Childrens Ministry and I hope you are as well! Feel free to send your kids up to the third floor for second service at 10:30 or you can drop them off where you normally do and a 5th Ave. Kids Team Member will be there to escort them upstairs! Feel free to email me at hannahatfifth@gmail.com for any questions about the change. Thank you!! Hannah

Core Values...
Values central to the life, mission and vision of Fifth Avenue Church of Christ are:

Sermon Notes ________________________

________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ __________________________________________ ________________________________________ ___________________________________

Christ-Centered Worship
We make it a priority every Sunday to celebrate Jesus through our music. (Romans 11:36-12:1-2). We focus on Jesus through grace-based preaching and teaching & understand the Bible is our authority (2 Timothy 3:16).

Church Health and Biblical Balance

Church health becomes reality when God's people seek harmony & live consistently. We expect every member to protect the unity of Christ's Church. (Romans 12:16; 1 Peter 3:8)

Global Evangelism
We are constant to our founding call to worldwide evangelism, proclaiming to all that Jesus Christ is the Savior, Healer, and Soon-Coming King (Acts 20:27).

Fellowship and Ministry

After people begin their journey with Jesus, we will equip them to find a ministry based upon their strengths. We want everyone to serve in some capacity. (1 Corinthians 12:12-27) We also want His church to be the living evidence of His love and power to the world.

How Can I Respond Today?

At FACC we look to the Bible for guidance on all issues. We believe that Gods Word is clear concerning what a person must do to become a Christian. Trust that Jesus can bring you to salvation. Turn (repent) from the sin in your life. Confess your desire to make Jesus the Lord of your life. Be baptized (immersed) in water for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the Holy Spirit into your life. To make this life decision for Christ, we ask that you come forward during our commitment song at the conclusion of the Sunday message. Baptized believers are welcome to become members at FACC by coming forward on Sunday morning or by seeing our Senior Minister to discuss this further. We ask that you complete a series of Curious classes to help you better understand what you are committing to as a member.

Discipleship
We do not want you to "get religion" here at Fifth Avenue Church of Christ in Lancaster. We are all about teaching you that Jesus seeks a daily relationship with Him through a life of obedience. In other words, we want to see the things you are taught actually change your lifestyle & your daily decisions.

Social Conscience
We place high value on the sanctity of human life, of Biblical marriage and morality, and we welcome ethnic diversity (Isaiah 56:7; Philippians 2:15-16).

OUR PURPOSE WE EXIST TO

OUR MISSION

To Love God and Love People!

SCOTTS THOUGHTS
For some time now, I have been sharing with you articles and thoughts about christianity, worship, discipleship and outreach. Over and over the themes of surrender and allowing God to have his way in our lives have been prominent in these articles. As we seek to worship God and fulfill the great commission, living lives of surrender in order to be a blessing to others, our plans must often change to be replaced with Gods plans. Our timing is not always in line with His. Our family has reached a point of transition. With Sarahs ongoing medical issues along with several other factors, I need to pursue additional income in order to support my family. This has been an exceedingly difficult decision for us, especially as we are starting to see the months of prayer and planning come to fruition. Next week, we begin our new 10:30 service in the basement. The worship team has been preparing for this move and many of you have been partnering with us in prayer and assisting with preparations. This move to the basement is a critical part of the future of our congregation and is in no way affected by my departure. When I came on staff I had no idea how long God would use us here. I have always seen my work as equipping others to lead and training them to use their gifts to glorify God and lead others. We have talented worship teams in both services who love the Lord and love to lead others in worship. We are blessed to be able to provide two distinct worship opportunities each Sunday morning and a third service on Sunday evening. Each of these minister to different groups in different ways. In this way we are seeking to become all things to all people that we might win some for the Kingdom. I want to say a very special thank you to all who serve our congregation through worship ministry. From the instrumentalists, to the vocalists, to the people who generate the powerpoints and those who run the powerpoint and sound. Your work is vital to this ministry, and you do not receive nearly enough recognition for your service. I also want to thank Mitch Shell for his amazing craftsmanship on the new audio cabinet. At the end of June our family will be moving on in new directions. Our prayers for you will continue as will our willingness to assist in any way we can with the ongoing ministry at Fifth Avenue. I ask that you pray diligently for our worship teams, particularly for the second service. They are ready to serve our congregation and community and eager to lead others in worship to our God. Encourage them. Bless them. Support them. They are serving God with their gifts and reaching the lost. If we cant support that, we have much bigger problems. I dont know exactly why God brought us here, or why He is leading us elsewhere at this time. I do know you have been a blessing to our family and I pray we have been a blessing to you as well. One of the beautiful things about following Jesus is that though we come from different places and have different ideas, when we focus on Jesus and work together, many parts become one body and the Kingdom becomes stronger. We love and appreciate you all and look forward to the next several weeks of ministry together with you. I pray Gods richest blessings and guidance on each of us, Scott Brown &Family
