Unholy Inheritence The Tillinghast Chronicles A Chronicle of Self-Discovery Unholy Inheritence is a chronicle based in haunted New England, a region

n replete with fading industrial ghost towns and mouldering motes of overgrown academia. It is a sea of shrouded villages clinging to guilty, horrid secrets, punctuated only infrequently by the besieged beacons of a few isolated cities. Things still lurk in the primal woods and whisper in tongues best never heard by mortal ears. Here the shroud between this world and more sinister ones is thin and the cloying stench of those other realms can never be fully exorcised from these clammy lands. Unholy Inheritence is about the Tillinghasts, a once-proud New England family, which, like many of its neighbors, was insular in nature and not without a few skeletons in its best-forgotten closets. The player characters are all members, to varying degrees, of this bewitched clan, the memory of which is maintained primarily by pranksome schoolchildren hoping to strike fear in the ears of their playmates; the rotting facade of the ancestral home an archetype of terror summoned in nightmares, keeping fear a close bedfellow. But appearances can be deceiving. The Tillighasts are not all dead, and even those who are do not so easily lie silent in their graves. Legends and stories from the earliest days stain the Tillinghast name, and these are only the barest hint of the unholy truth which this family claims as its heritage. The chronicle begins with the player characters knowing nothing about their Tillinghast ancestry, but each will learn, few easily, of their immutable tie to this family's dark legacy. What's more, the player characters will not even be sure of just "what" they themselves are, for the Tillighast blood holds many secrets, not all of which are readily evident. The player characters' ancestors lived at the heart of the World of Darkness and were not only well acquainted with many of its frightening truths, but also with a numer of its less-thanhuman denizens, spawning relationships that would damn one to Dante's deepest hells. Some of this unspeakable past can be found by diligent research in musty record books and fading derroguetypes, but much of this blasphemous inheritence can only be found by looking inside oneself and finding the Tillighast within. Unholy Inheritence is a chronicle of not only discovering who and what one is, but is a journey of confrontation, inner struggle and reconciliation with one's identity. Will the PC accept his lineage or will he tear down the house around him to deny it? Is the guilt of one's ancestors inherited, and if so, what does one do in penance? These kinds of questions will be examined as the player characters explore their geneology and themselves. In the end, however, where will this journey take them? The chronicle will conclude with the "slaying of the beast" that is the Tillighast family. This need not be taken literally, but essentially the darkness that blossoms like some ulcerous fungus deep inside the family needs to be finally and forevermore exterminated; the inhuman crimes of the clan need to be atoned for or righted; the ghosts of the past must be laid to rest once and for all; and the very name of the family should be given a proper and much-needed burial. Perhaps from these ashes of blood strewn on the chill wind that slithers through the ivy and rust of musty New England a new legacy will be born; a new family founded; a brighter fate possible. Perhaps. Perhaps not... by Aurelius Verdigris (aka Christopher Kobar: ckobar@dttus.com)A Few Words About Unholy Inheritence

Sourcebooks This chronicle of New England encompasses and includes ALL aspects of White Wolf's published World of Darkness. Every published reference (I honestly believe) to any location and likely most, if not all, personalities in the New England area are included here, either as major players/places or as background material, with any connections noted. This, of course, is only the bare-bones beginning and Storytellers should feel free to add more characters to spice up the environment -- keeping in mind the mood of palpable fear and insane horror that have historically been so well developed by such as H.P. Lovecraft (whose work has inspired much of this chronicle). Below I shall attempt to list those sourcebooks which are most important for those who wish to use this setting and its chronicle. The following books are a near-must if the information contained here is to be fully appreciated and understood with real accuracy. Haunts, contains "Tillinghast Mansion," the epicenter for this entire chronicle, for Wraith. Dark Colony, the "New England by Night" for Vampire. The Book of the Wyrm, the definitive tome on Black Spiral Dancers for Werewolf. Chronicle of the Black Labyrinth, a juicy grimoire about Evil, technically for Werewolf. The Book of Madness, all about the Nephandi and evil cultists, for Mage. Freeholds and Hidden Glens, contains the faerie places of power for Changeling. Encyclopedia Cthulhiana, (by Chaosium) contains all background information for New England's dark past for those unfamiliar with Lovecraft, for Call of Cthulhu. Miscellany While this chronicle focuses on the Tillinghast family and their destinies, it contains endless possibilities for other New England chronicles, and I hope that should you choose not to run this chronicle per se, you will still find this material of use in your own chronicles set in the New England of the World of Darkness. Much of the material contained herein is unfinished, leaving plenty of room for your own creations, insertions and personal touch to my own work. I have, however, left a very clear and helpful blueprint for storytellers so that any information needed for your own stories, and yet missing here, can easily be surmised and created so as to fit into the existing structure without disturbing it too much. This is the primary reason the actual chronololgy of the region contains more detail than any other part of this work, for so long as you know when things happened in relation to one another, inserting new events is made easy and meaningful. A Chronology of the Darkest of Origins c. -3500 Wandering in the deserts of the Sahara, King Osiris' brother, Setekh, is Embraced by a childe of Caine and left to die in the flames of the approaching sun. Nyarlothotep visits the starving neonate in his guise as Apophis the Serpent and gives Setekh succor, teaching him to survive in the sun-blasted wilds in return for his promise of eternal service. The bargain struck, the vampire takes the name of Set and swears to destroy the world of light and bring down all who have wronged him in the way of the serpent. The Antediluvian returns to Egypt where he proceeds to destroy his brother, who has also been Embraced by another of Caine's childer who wished to put a damper in his sibling's plans to destroy the sun. This is the beginning of the great Jyhad, the first move in the eternal game of chess played by the eldest of vampires. Soon afterwards Isis and her sons -- Horus and Anubis -- aid her in

resurrecting Osiris with the newly created Spell of Life, the second of the eventual forty-three immortal mummies. c. -2700 A powerful Nephandus from the the lost city of Irem comes to Egypt and arranges for himself to become pharaoh, the last of the Third Dynasty. Nephren-Ka, as he calls himself, brings the worship of Nyarlothotep to the Kingdom, raising the stature of other sects dedicated to Bast, Anubis and Sebek. During his dark reign he discovers beneath the sands of Egypt the Labyrinth of Kish, in which he carries out horrid rites and sacrifices in the name of Nyarlothetep. Deep within the black catacombs he also finds the Shining Trapezohedron, which aids him directly in his unspeakable quest for power. c. -2600 Nephren-Ka's black practices soon rouses a cabal of usurpers, led by the warrior Sneferu. With the aid of the womanly charms of Sneferu's wife Hetephras and the unearthly powers of the mummy Sahura, the cabal overthrows the Black Pharaoh. In return for his leadership, Sneferu is made the first pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty. During the fighting, however, Queen Hetephras is mortally wounded and so, in return for her help in overthrowing Nephren-Ka, the Cult of Isis gives her the Spell of Life, making her immortal like Sahura. Meanwhile, Nephren-Ka and his devotees flee westward, but are cut off from their goal of reaching "an island across the western sea." With no place to go the Nephandus and his acolytes seek sanctuary in a hidden complex beneath the earth, forever sealed off from the surface world. There, in his final days, the Black Pharaoh sacrifices one-hundred fellow cultists to Nyarlothotep in order to ensure his own eventual reincarnation in the distant future. c. -2300 The queen of Egypty's Sixth Dynasty, Nitocris, revives the worship of Nyarlothotep as Apophis/Apep, sacrificing and tormenting her subjects without hesitation to sate her cruel desires. After a particularly horrid mass sacrifice -- where she drowns an entire banquet hall of guests -- the sorceress is visited by an avatar of her patron deity and told of the location of the Black Pharaoh's hidden portal to the Labyrinth of Kish. There her majesty discovered a hellish mirror that could be used to breach the Gauntlet (the Mirror of Nitocris) and the Shining Trapezohedron, both of which she used to further push the envelope of evil. Eventually her crimes were avenged and a group of dedicated priests captured her and buried her alive in her tomb to rot away the ages. c. -1660 Nophru-Ka, the high priest of a powerful Nyarlothotep cult linked to the ancient cult of the Black Pharaoh, attempts to overthrow the reigning pharaoh and usurp power for himself and his sect. The pharaoh learns of the priest's plans, however, and had him slain as he knelt praying in his blasphemous temple. Nophru-Ka's followers, fearing the same fate, leave Egypt and travel south to the ruins of G'harne, an infamous place of evil lurking amid the continent's darkest jungles. After some time a visiting Chinese barrabus and his companion, an Obertus revenant scholar from Romania, lead the exiled cultists from their jungle lair to the misty isle of Britain. There they proclaim themselves the Brotherhood of the Beast and dedicate themselves to fulfilling Nophru-Ka's prophecy of Nyarlothotep's return by selectively breeding until they create "the chosen one," a mortal who will find the means of bringing the Beast back to earth, perhaps by being the very vessel for their god to inhabit. A Supernatural Chronology of New England 1397 Louis le Fif is born in Damburrow, Scotland. The child is actually the self-prophesized reincarnation of the Black Pharaoh, Nephren-Ka. Robert le Fif, the boy's father, is kinfolk to the Black Spiral Dancers and a member of the Brotherhood of the Beast.

1412 The younger le Fif murders his parents as proof of his obedience to the Wyrm during a foul ceremony in which he danced the Black Spiral. Afterwards (his mother already dead of illness) he departs his village and joins the Church, becoming a probationary member of the Franciscan Order of monks in order to infiltrate and corrupt that most spiritual body. 1417 A full Brother of the Franciscan Order now, le Fif leaves his monestary and begins traveling the British Isles and beyond in order to spread the word of the Wyrm under the guise of the Church in Rome, tainting those he pretends to heal with the Wyrm's most horrid afflictions. 1421 By this year le Fif has reached distant Romania and has made contacts with a host of small cells across Europe dedicated, like himself, to the greater glory of the Wyrm. He also meets regularly and at times travels with a small cabal of other members of the Brotherhood of the Beast, including the Italian conjurer and diabolist Francois Prelati, the Lombard Etienne Corrillaut, better known simply as Poitou, the "scientists" Antoine de Palerne and Jean de la Riviere, and most importantly, Lord Gilles de Rais, the future "companion" to Joan of Arc and Seneschal of France (and source of the legends of Bluebeard). 1423 Stories begin circulating across Christiandom about the sinister truth behind le Fif's "healing touch," which earns him the more common appelation, The Black Monk. The Vatican begins to take notice of these stories and appoints inquisitors to take an active interest in le Fif and his companions. 1439 Captured and taken to the Bishop of Nantes, le Fif is tried for crimes of witchcraft and other counts of anti-Christian heresy and horror and, after espousing much to his tormentors and accusers, is summarily executed in an appropriate manner. Unfortunately, the tales of the Black Monk only grow after his death. 1606 Simon Orne is born in Sussex, England, the third incarnation of the damned soul of ancient Nephren-Ka. This time the boy's parents are unwitting tools of the Brotherhood of the Beast, which had been carefully planning for such an event since the demise of their previous "chosen one," the Black Monk of the fifteenth century. 1616 On Orne's tenth birthday the Brotherhood of the Beast kills his parents and takes him away to its secret chantry. There the cult violently Awakens the Widderslaint's sleeping Avatar via terrible ceremonies honoring the Wyrm and begins teaching him of the qlippothic rites and practices that he will need to know in order to fulfill his destiny as the messiah of their great father, the Wyrm Azathoth. 1635 The Tremere Regent, Madelaine Coventry, arrives in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and establishes the first colonial Kindred presence by order of her Viennese superiors. 1639 At Coventry's direction, her trusted ghouls, Geoffrey Thorne and Nathaniel Grey, found their own coven of occultists, known simply as "The Apostles," in the fledgling town of Boston. 1640 Orne, now a powerful mage in his own right and messianic figure for the Brotherhood, is almost slain during a powerful ritual of summoning that goes awry. English mages quickly move to investigate the situation and a viscious battle ensues, during which Orne escapes. He boards passage to the Colonies believing that his destiny lies there, and arrives in Arkham in late summer. Among the many tomes of forbidden knowledge he brings with him is the r Codex, a Greek tome that details the ancient, alien "Things" that live at the edge of the universe. 1642 Orne establishes his own cabal, the Lidless Eye Coven, in Arkham. 1644 Thorne and Grey learn of the existence of the r Codex and have it stolen from Orne in the hopes that it will open up new avenues of

power for both themselves and their Cainite master. After careful examination of the grimoire, Coventry becomes convinced of its authenticity and importance and becomes a de facto member of the ultra-secret and blasphemous Tremere Order of the Wyrm. 1649 While surveying New England Orne stumbles across Graymere Glen in Southeastern Connecticut, quickly recognizing it as one of the Nodes tied to the lost Labyrinth of Kish (the most powerful of the Realm's Nodes is in the Australian Outback). At first Orne attempts to build a new chantry at the site, but the ancient guardians -- the willows and certain fey beings -- oppose his every move, forcing him to abandon the plan. In the end he decides to instead make regular visits to the site in order to harvest Quintessence as needed. 1650 Instigated by Kindred who wish to seize Coventry's power, Thorne and Grey are seized by the authorities, tried for witchcraft and hanged. Their eleven fellow cabalists, the Apostles, flee the Bay Colony with their sacred grimoire and find refuge in nearby Salem, where they once again take up their studies as they had been taught. Naturally, their flight to Salem was invisibly "inspired" by Coventry, who removed herself to that quiet town once she realized just how dangerous her Kindred competitors could be. 1657 Orne learns more of the Codex's theft through necromantic rituals, making contact with the wraith of the now-deceased Boston Irish footpad responsible for the crime, Patty McShain. The Nephandus regularly summons the amnesiac wraith in order to learn more about who hired him and where the tome could be found. 1661 Orne moves to Boston (telling locals he is returning to Europe, and changing his name to Samuel Bridgewater upon arriving in his new home) in order to locate Thorne and Grey, whom he has finally discovered are the parties responsible for the theft of his book, leaving his chief acolyte, the hedge magician Keziah Mason in charge of his coven until his return. In Boston he learns of the mens' deaths and begins searching for the survivors of their coven in the hopes that the Codex is still with them and had not been burned by zealous withhunters. 1665 Bridgewater succeeds in summoning the ghosts of Thorne and Grey and wastes no time in capturing and then torturing them for information about the whereabouts of his property. From them he learns of the Acolytes' presence in Salem, but equally important, he also learns of the existence of the vampire, Madelaine Coventry and of the continued existence of the formerly hermetic House Tremere. 1666 Not one to waste useful knowledge, Bridgewater moves to Salem and confronts Coventry, expecting a fight. Instead, however, he finds a new ally, for Coventry tells him of her "conversion to darkness" and her shared desire to serve the Things Beyond. With his ability to wield True Magick and her Thaumaturgy, she explains, they might be able to succeed in summoning these Nephandic entities, particularly with a whole coven to serve as sacrificial offerings (not to mention a handy source of blood) should it be necessary. The two agree to a partnership sealed with a ritual oathbond (a Blood Bond!). An alliance reached, Bridgewater introduces himself to the Apostles, claiming he is the living repository for the souls of Thorne and Grey, and seizes control of the Codex and the coven. Soon after, however, one of his Acolytes (a subtle name change from the former 'Apostles'), Persephone Cullen, discovers Coventry's predations and, believing that this is a new thing, concludes that Bridgewater is no more than a servant of the vampire's sent to ensure her easy access to their blood. Cullen, along with four other cultists, denounce Bridgewater and attempt to oust him, but quickly learn that they are out of their league and are forced to flee Salem in haste. Shortly thereafter these reaffirmed Apostles of Thorne and Grey form their own

cabal, the Twisted Horn Coven, a sworn enemy of Orne's Acolytes, in the relative quiet of Lyme, Connecticut. 1690 Arkham College is founded by a trio of disgruntled professors from Harvard College, hoping to escape the dogmatism of the Church. Joseph Curwen, a young man recently returned from the sea, takes up residence in Salem and becomes involved in the Lidless Eye Coven, lured by the promise of secret power. 1691 Gregor Lrincze, a Tzimisce elder and Sabbat priest from Hungary, arrives in the Bay Colony in the hopes of finding an environment agreeable to his private un-lifestyle and new converts for his vampiric sect. 1692 The infamous Witch Trials take place in Salem, spurned on by Coventry's Kindred foes and their minions. Bridgewater and his Acolytes are forced to sink deeper into the shadows in order to throw any suspicion off their trail and onto innocent neighbors instead. Two of the most notorious witchhunters are the fire and brimstone minister Righteous Endeavor Clay and the devout Daniel Hargrave, who was Awakened by a miracle as a boy and is the first member of the Celestial Chorus to step foot in the New World, bringing its vision there. 1693 Keziah Mason, the High Witch of the Lidless Eye Coven is seized by Arkham authorities and sent to Salem for trial as a witch. Bridgewater rescues her from her jailers using his magickal arts and "gives" her to Coventry, who Embraces her in order to bolster her power. Later that year Hesper Payne, another member of the Lidless Eye Coven, is arrested and burned at the stake by the Arkham town fathers. In the wake of these scourges the Lidless Eye dissolves itself, its members either leaving town or burying their dark past. Joseph Curwen, now a trusted ghoul of Coventry's, flees Salem and its witchhunters in favor of Providence, there to set up shop and act as his master's eyes and ears in that growing town. 1694 The Tzimisce Gregor Lrincze begins feeding nightly upon the one man who could expose him for what he is, Righteous Endeavor Clay. Doctors are unable to pinpoint the cause or cure for the strange wasting maladay which puts the zealous clergyman in his bed for months on end. 1695 To truly horrify the Colony, Lrincze finally Embraces Clay on Maundy Thursday and gives him the full Creation Rites of the Sabbat. Three nights later, on Easter, the undead minister finally pulls himself from his grave in horrid paradoy of his former existence and truly inherits his vampiric legacy. 1699 Lrincze and Clay, along with two other Sabbat vampires, depart Boston under pressure from Camarilla foes, heading north to find a new home in Augusta, Maine. 1704 Roger Caufey, a Rafastio revenant from Marseilles, France and Verbena High Priest, arrives in Lyme and takes control of the floundering Twisted Horn Coven, along with three of his kin, reshaping the cult into an instrument of the Tal'mahe Ra, which has an interest in checking Coventry's power in the Colonies. The coven's hermetic bent is replaced with more traditional witch practices related to blood and earth. 1710 Unable to rid himself of the particularly resilient withhunter Daniel Hargrave, concerned about the growing power of the Twisted Horn Coven, and aware that his agelessness has begun to draw too much attention, Bridgewater stages his own death and departs Salem, leaving his Apostles and the arcane Codex securely back in Coventry's capable hands. 1713 At Coventry's suggestion (Regnant's Dominate?) he moves to Providence where he quickly sheds his Bridgewater identity and establishes himself instead as scientist Dr. Jason Orne, reassuming his family name (a egoism that he cannot resist). With Curwen as his

assistant he continues his monstrous studies, maintaining regular communication with Coventry and relaying his progress to his undead "partner." 1719 Eager to learn the fate of his former coven, the Lidless Eye, now that the witchhunting craze has died down, Orne reacquires his old property in Arkham under the guise of his own grandson, Jeremiah Orne, claiming to be a busy sea captain in order to explain his lengthy absences (when back in Providence). 1720 Orne befriends two other local occultists: Francis Derby, a local sea captain of some respect and recently Awakened Orphan mage, and George Locksley, the mundane son of the hanged witch Hesper Payne. (After Payne's execution George had been adopted by his uncle, Thomas Locksley, a toolmaker in Innsmouth, hence the name change.) 1721 Finding it easy to turn his two companions to the path of darkness, Orne founds the Order of the Black Triangle, using as the coven's sanctum in Arkham a stone house [the Orne House] built over the mouth of an endless tunnel system predating human habitation. Orne assumes the nephandic title of Gilledian, naming Derby his Prelatus and Locksley as Shaytan. The Widderslainte begins penning his personal journal, The Book of the Overseer of the Years to record the magickal and horrific discoveries he had made over his long life, including much remembered from his former life as Nephren-Ka. Within the evil book's pages he scribes the secret names of a host of demonic entities and detailed secrets of his own life which could potentially be used against him should the tome fall into his enemies' hands. 1727 Orne and his fellow Nephandi successfully summon the shade of Egypt's Sixth Dynasty queen, Nitocris, whose infernal knowledge proves instrumental in helping the ahriman break through the Gauntlet in order to begin exploring the Other Side. The cabal also begins searching for some more easily accessable source of Quintessence (than Greymere Glen) in order to permanently establish a gateway to the Umbra. 1735 The Chronicle of the Black Labyrinth is published in England by Lord Alfred Craven, an former decorated soldier whose battle wounds forced him into retirement and scholarship. The ambitious Craven is brother to Lord Ehrlich Craven, a member of the Brotherhood of the Beast and kinfolk to the Black Spiral Dancers. Hoping to gain prestige and employment in King George's court, the ambitious author writes about a global conspiracy that poses a threat to England, with its source in the "foul Scots." Unfortunately the writer is unaware of the King's Scottish blood and is beheaded for his affrontery, after, of course, the King's being prompted by secretive agents of the Brotherhood of the Beast, including Craven's own brother. The book is soon lost in uncaring obscurity to the delight of the cultists. 1741 Zachariah Slane, acolyte to an English Tremere magus, is Embraced in Vienna. 1758 Agents of Doissetep, based in Boston at the Delono House aspect, are tipped off about the goings on at Orne's Providence home by one of the servants who flees while the Nephandus is away in Arkham. The force from Delono House, consisting primarily of the Vantikor shock troops and led by two mages, attacks Orne's home, but only succeeds in killing his household servants, their prey escaping into the ancient tunnels beneath the house and finding refuge with Curwen (who was unknown to the treasonous servant) until he can arrange quiet passage to Arkham. Once there Orne sends word to his lawyers that he had been forced to hastily relocate to Philadelphia to care for his ailing mother, and instructs Curwen to keep his eye on the residence and to retrieve certain valuable possessions left behind, including his personal grimoire, when things calmed down. 1761 Curwen, acting as mediator for Orne, contacts the new owner of the foreclosed Providence lot, wealthy sea captain Ambrose

Tillinghast, offering him a sizeable sum for The Book of the Oversear of the Years, should it be found in the musty house. Tillinghast's curiosity peaked, he searches for and finds the book, but is unable to part with it after perusing its hypnotically dark pages. He ignores two further inquests, finally relaying to Curwen that he knows nothing of such a book and will summon the authorities should he be further harassed. Curwen, not wishing to draw undue attention, ceases his entreaties and waits. 1762 Tillinghast razes Orne's old home to make room for his own enviable domicile. Comfortably settled in, he begins study of the maddening grimoire and finds himself drawn into an inescapable darkness. Orne instructs Curwen to begin romancing Ambrose Tillinghast's sister Eliza in order to get closer to the family and retrieve the magickal artifacts left behind four years before. 1763 Under the influence of a dark spell, Eliza marries Joseph Curwen and takes up residence in his farmhouse just outside of Providence, all in complete defiance of Ambrose's wishes. Captain Tillinghast shuns his sister and renounces her, slamming the door on Curwen's hopes of recovering Orne's possessions. 1764 Delono House, making the connection betwen Jason and Jeremiah Orne, sends its troops to Arkham only hours after news reaches town that Captain Orne had died of pneumonia at sea days before. The hunters scour Arkham to be sure the Nephandus is not hiding, finally leaving when their search produces nothing. In truth, the three Nephandi -- Orne, Derby and Locksley -- enter the Umbra to wait until the coast is clear before reemerging. From this date onward Orne remains almost exclusively in his sanctum, as his appearance would certainly raise questions and spawn a new witchhunt. 1765 Miskatonic Liberal Arts College is founded posthumously by the will of Jeremiah Orne. As his trusted former colleagues and fellow businessmen, Francis Derby and George Locksley are named as the school's first Trustees and begin in earnest to create an institution of renown, Orne acting as the invisible guiding hand. In August, Eliza Curwen gives birth to a daughter, Ann Curwen. 1768 George Locksley becomes the victim of a ritual gone horribly wrong, a ritual intended to summon Nyarlothotep from his unfathomable realm of darkness, but which called forth something else instead, something alien which feasted on his soul and reduced his physical form to a shambling "thing" that can now only serve the ahriman as a "guard dog." The University Trustee's disappearance is never explained well enough to appease all the curious, and rumors of mysterious circumstances persist for many years. 1770 Eliza Curwen takes her daughter and leaves her husband Joseph, the spell that held her in thrall for so long fading with her husband's brutal treatment. She pleads with her brother estranged brother for sanctuary and is finally accepted back, taking up residence with Ambrose and his wife once again. 1771 A party of concerned locals raid Joseph Curwen's farm in Pawtuxet and put an end to the horrors they find there. Curwen vanishes by dint of his magical knowledge, escaping his pursuers and returning to Boston to serve his true master, Madelaine Coventry, once again. 1775 War breaks out betwen the American colonists and British troops. 1776 The Colonists deliver their Declaration of Independence to King George, ensuring that the revolution that had begun would only be satisfied when England had withdrawn all claims to the Colonies. 1778 Partially out of hatred for Curwen and his sister's defiance, Ambrose torments and rapes Eliza during a black ritual mass, resulting in her terrified midnight flight from the mansion with her daughter Ann, her mind finally shattered after years of psychological and

physical defilement. At the snowfall Eliza dies giving birth to the fruit of her incestuous union, her son Charles. Both Charles and his sister Ann are raised by Mary Peake, a devoted friend of Eliza's, who knows little of Eliza's nightmarish past. 1779 Captain Ambrose Tillinghast drowns when his ship, the Sary Tillinghast, is lost at sea, ostensibly sunk by the British Navy, but in truth due to the Qlippothic magicks of the vengeaful Orne. Tillinghast had set out to locate the lost portal to the Labyrinth of Kish in the hope of finding and destroying the Shining Trapezohedron, having recognized it as a source of ultimate power. Orne learned of this and put an end to the junior sorceror's ambitions once and for all, worried that the Trapezohedron could be used against him as well as for his benefit. Ezra Tillinghast inherits his father's estate and cloisters his mother and sister Rebecca in the brooding mansion as Sary's mental state continues to disintigrate, partly due to her own discovery and obsession with Orne's Book of the Overseer of the Years. Also this year, Gilles du Erlette, a rakish young French noble from Rochefort departs his homeland for the Colonies in order to escape prosecution as a loup garou, a charge of which he is guilty: for du Erlette is actually a Black Spiral Dancer Theurge. 1782 Du Erlette commissions the construction of a manor house in Montpelier, Vermont, on the site of a sleeping Wyrm-caern along Silver Brook, a foul place of power dedicated to cancerous fertility in the name of Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young. The evil Theurge has many of his valuables shipped to his new home from France and begins his study of the vile Pit in the caverns below his new home. As protection from any native Garou that might try to put an end to his work, he fills his home with an abundance of silver in the hopes that it will at least give them pause should they consider an all-out assault. Du Erlette also begins making contact with other Black Spiral Dancers in the region in order to forge strong ties and alliances against the Garou. 1783 The British surrender the Colonies and formally acknowledge defeat at the hands of the Americans and their allies. Dudleytown, Connecticut is founded on the site of Greymere Glen by the Marcowicz brothers of Poland, two trolls seeking their fortunes in the wooded hills of the New World. 1784 By autumn du Erlette has succeeded in rallying a dozen other Black Spiral Dancers to his side, wooing them away from their former homes with wild promises of power that will come once the Pit beneath Silverwood Manor is opened. He proclaims himself sept leader, naming those gathered the Hive of the Black Goat of the Woods. 1785 Du Erlette is nearly killed while attempting to open the Womb of the Black Goat beneath Silverbrook Manor, the energies of Malfeas destroying ten of the thirteen Dancers. At a loss as to how to proceed, du Erlette puts out word in the occult underworld of his need for assistance. Orne, hopeful that du Erlette may hold the key to the source of power he has so long sought, contacts him and offers his assistance in return for du Erlette's helping him regain his own properties in Providence. The fiendish werewolf accepts the offer and agrees to Orne's plan of his wooing and then marrying Rebecca Tillinghast, a plan which, if successful, would allow him to inherit the estate and its still-hidden magickal lore and artifacts, a plan that failed with Curwen. Orne does not, however, tell his newest pawn that he also covets the Pit himself. 1787 After a whirlwind affair, Rebecca Tillinghast marries du Erlette, the evil homid proving himself far more charming than Curwen, and having the added benefit of not having to contend with Ambrose. He quickly ingratiates himself with his new family and begins carefully searching the house and its grounds for the artifacts and

magickal treatises that Orne had described to him in order to fulfill his part of the bargain with the Nephandus. 1789 Zachariah Slane is sent to the Winchester Chantry in England. That same year young Ann Curwen kills her life-long guardian, Mary Peake, in a fit of madness, the result of not only her own horrible past, but also of Ambrose's continued harassment from beyond the grave, his desire for revenge against Joseph Curwen still unsated so long as the conniving thaumaturgist remained on the bright side of the Shroud. Ann is found insane by psychiatrists and institutionalized in Providence for her remaining years. 1792 Anne Curwen is Embraced by a Malkavian and set free from her asylum, joining the Kindred community of Rhode Island and discovering a whole new world of darkness from the one she had known before. That autumn the Order of the Silent Threnody is founded in New Haven, Connecticut by a cabal of four members of the Order of Hermes. The first Seneschal is Johnathan Bard, a respected local scholar and professor. 1795 The Tremere Inner Circle, sure that Coventry has corrupted the Boston Chantry with infernal practices, orders the magus Baladin to Massachusetts to remove Coventry and take control of the chantry house. A deadly struggle ensues between the two magi and their forces, finally resulting in Coventry's ouster and sunrise flight to Salem in a carriage driven by her wounded ghoul, the sorceror Joseph Curwen. 1798 Coventry establishes her own secret Salem chantry, Coventry House, its few members, including Madelaine's childe Keziah Mason, all devoted to the outlawed Order of the Wyrm. In Providence, a series of gruesome murders prompts the debonnaire du Erlette to form a citizens patrol to hunt down and slay the monstrous killer, earning him a reputation as a leader in town -- despite his being the very culprit he pretends to seek. 1799 On Roodmass night a citizenry mob, led in spirit by the wild accusations of du Erlette's outspoken nemesis, the town's prodigal patriot and adventurer Dexter Wilmarth and in fact by Roger Mason, a distant relative of Keziah Mason's, storm the Tillinghast mansion in the hopes of finding and burning the Frenchman on grounds that he is the werewolf still terrorizing the city. The mob is too late, however, finding their prey already gone (via the network of subterranean passages) and the remains of his wife and young son Napthali silent witnesses to the truth of the accusations of lycanthropy and other darkness. (The fact that the deaths had been oddly due to drowning were easily overlooked at the time.) The surviving child, John du Erlette, is raised thereafter by nannies hired by his griefstricken uncle Ezra. 1801 Charles Tillinghast moves to Dudleytown to open up a dry goods store in the hopes that the newly discovered tin lode would mean heavy mining and quick profits, for Charles has no part of the Tillinghast fortune, his own sinful birthright denied by Ezra and kin, more because they do not want to face the truth. In early November Dominique Trmolire, the spoiled daughter of an influential Quebecois barrister is seduced and impregnated by Gilled du Erlette during his stay in that Canadian province. 1802 Slane is reassigned, being sent to Boston to assist Baladin in reconsolidating power. Du Erlette returns to Silverbrook after his travels, hoping that things had died down enough to allow him to avoid capture and prosecution by Rhode Island authorities. There he againt takes up his position as leader of the Hive of the Black Goat and begins rebuilding his sept. During this time his newest progeny, a son named Robert, is born in Montreal to the now disgraced Madamoiselle Trmolire, whose father takes up punishing her harshly for her tarnishing of the family name.

1803 Sary Tillinghast, the late captain's widow, dies in solitude in the attic of the family manse, taking The Book of the Overseer of the Years with her into the Shadowlands and forever from the grasping claws of its author, the vile Orne. 1811 Charles Tillinghast marries Nickola Marcowicz, the daughter of one of Dudleytown's troll founders. A son is born later that year, but because of deformity, dies only days later. 1813 Orne visits Silverbrook with Derby and, despite du Erlette's failings in Providence, assists him as promised with opening the Womb of the Black Goat. Derby undergoes the Rebirth for the first time, emerging from the festering Caul as true Nephandi, his soul forever twisted and corrupted like Orne's own, while the excited Black Spiral Dancers frolic in mindless ecstacy. A former Silent Strider called Ahkempotet is appointed the Womb's first Gatekeeper and makes contact with the terrible avatar of the Womb's totem, Shub-Niggurath. 1814 Robert Trmolire undergoes The Change, coming full into his inheritence as a Black Spiral Dancer like his unknown father. The event traumatizes him and he flees his confining home fleeing into the wilds. Within a month he mysteriously finds his way to Silverbrook, having been led by terrible nightmares and odd auspices. There he is recognized and welcomed by his true father and before the year ends he undergoes his own soul-wrenching Rite of Passage, walking the First Circle of the Black Spiral and renouncing his mother's name in favor of his father's. 1816 Daniel Tillinghast is born to Charles and Nickola, their first and last healthy child. 1819 The Hive of the Black Goat, experiencing steady growth since the Womb's opening, summons one of Shub-Niggurath's Dark Young, called a Nexus Crawler by the Garou, to aid in the conquest of the surrounding territory. After three nights of rampaging, a large host of Silver Fangs and their allies from the Green Mountains descend upon Montpelier intent on destroying the Wyrmish blight. The battle is bloody and many on both sides are lost, but in the end the Silver Fangs gain the upper hand and drive away or slay all the Black Spirals. The jaggling of Shub-Niggurath is chased back to its Womb, which is subsequently sealed by powerful rites of binding and the property is abandoned to the elements. Gilles du Erlette is slain in the battle and his soul is sucked into the Tempest, from which it emerges reborn as a Spectral servant of Oblivion. Among the surviving Black Spiral Dancers, however, is Robert du Erlette, his son, who flees into the tunnels beneath New England to hide, taking with him the sacred book penned in Sanskrit by the now-dead Gatekeeper, Ahkempotet's Scroll. 1823 While visiting Sumatra, Ezra Tillinghast is murdered by axe. Upon learning of his uncle's death, John du Erlette renounces his father's name in favor of Tillinghast and is named sole heir of the family assets. 1831 Coventry suddenly abandons her Salem chantry (along with her herd, the coven of Acolytes), leaving its magi, led now by Keziah Mason, helpless before a Sabbat assault which she had received anonymous warning of in advance. Coventry flees with Curwen to Arkham to join the the Black Triangle and to assist them in their work. In return for his unflagging service Curwen is taken to Silverbrook and rewarded with the Rebirth, an event which Awakens his Avatar to its true potential as a Nephandus. 1832 The city of Boston is taken by the Sabbat, who kill Prince Baladin. The Tremere survivors of both the Boston and Salem chantries, putting aside their difference in light of their current predicament, relocate to the quiet of Hartford, Connecticut, and found a new chantry there. The magus John Reiss is tapped to be the first Regent and he takes over, careful to ensure that those beneath him do

not have easy access to power as they had in the past, in order to reduce the possibility of another internal conflict. Keziah Mason, Coventry's own abandoned childe, renounces her affiliation with the Order of the Wyrm and swears to get revenge upon her sire and former mentor one day. 1833 The Malkvaian Quentin King III declares himself Prince of Boston, with few to oppose him. Du Erlette dies in battle against a pack of Wendigo. Daniel Tillinghast, rejecting his father's dry goods business in Dudleytown, takes up work in the tin mines, preferring the gloomy tunnels to the bustling streets above. 1834 John Tillinghast marries Elizabeth Armitage of Attleboro, Massachusetts. Their first son David is born just prior to Christmas that year, an event which brings some light into the benighted Providence manse. Also in 1834, Caiaphas Smith of Boston meets and becomes a student of the legendary witchhunter Daniel Hargrave, though where Hargrave is truly dedicated to destroying Nephandi, Smith dedicates himself to wiping out the progeny of Caine. 1835 Elizabeth Tillinghast dies in childbirth delivering her second child, Sander Tillinghast. John lovingly raises the two sons alone in the gloomy ancestral house. Robert du Erlette founds the Squallor's Kith pack in New Hampshire's White Mountains dedicated to one day returning to Silverbrook and reclaiming the lost legacy of Gilled du Erlette and the Womb of the Black Goat. 1843 The Acolytes experience a resurgence (after their near dissolution following Coventry's departure) with the arrival and new leadership of Kathryn Van Dorn, a Verbena mystick from Newfoundland. To reflect their "rebirth," the coven changes its name to the less craven Order of the Golden Dawn in the hopes of attracting even more educated and progressive minds. 1844 Professor Enoch Bowen of Brown University in Providence discovers the lost portal to the Labyrinth of Kish in Egypt, having discovered clues to its location in dreams imparted upon him by Ambrose Tillinghast from beyond the grave in the hope that Orne would not get his hands on the object first. After his expedition he returns to Rhode Island with the Shining Trapezohedron, which he recovered from the Labyrinth, and creates the Starry Wisdom Cult, a group of occultists dedicated to learning the secrets of space and time. Tillinghast tries to put an end to the cult, but is unable to when the cult begins meeting in the old Free Will Church, a place haunted by a horrific plasmic entity of malefic might that will not be disturbed. 1845 After thorough examination, Kathryn Van Dorn seals the r Codex in a hidden safe, recognizing the book as a corruptive work of the Nephandi. 1847 The Black Spiral Dancer, Robert du Erlette, dies from a host of ailments. He leaves Ahkempotet's Scroll with his pack, Squallor's Kith, in the hopes that they would one day succeed in their luciferian destiny. 1851 Samuel Tillinghast is born to Daniel and his sixteen year-old bride, Norma Miller, the daughter of an enterprising Dudleytown diemaker. 1853 Immigrant Fianna Garou fleeing the famines in Ireland clash with the Sept of Cold Sorrows over membership and use of the Lake Webster Caern. Finney's Irish Pub opens in Boston's North End, becoming the tribe's unofficial meeting place in light of the group's lack of a proper caern. 1855 The Order of the Black Triangle, after many years of failure, finally succeed in establishing a gateway leading directly to the Labyrinth of Kish. Orne excitedly steps foot in his ancient haunt once again and quickly begins searching the endless black mazes for the treasure he desires so much: the Shining Trapezohedron,

completely unaware that it has been removed to Providence by Bowen already. 1861 The Elder Faith Seminary in Arkham formally joins Miskatonic College, giving birth to the new Miskatonic University. 1862 Colonel David Tillinghast is killed at the Battle of Fredericksburg, in Virginia. His brother, a captain in the army, is shot in the leg, which is amputated. The veteran is soon discharged with honor from service. 1863 Sander Tillinghast returns home to find that his father had died due to the shock of learning of his sons' fates. The young officer is named the sole heir to the family fortunes and takes up residence in the empty house in Providence to live out his last years in thoughtful solitude. By the end of this year, the Starry Wisdom Church has grown to over two-hundred members, and a branch chapter is opened in Townshend, Vermont by a devotee forced to move due to an inheritence in that town. 1865 Three Black Spiral Dancers from the former Squallor's Kith pack found the Hive of the Rusted Blade in Augusta, Maine, and become allies of the Sabbat coven there, Fugue. 1868 St. Mary's Teaching Hospital is opened at Miskatonic University. 1873 Upton Rowlands, Ventrue elder, proclaims himself Prince of New Haven, Connecticut. 1874 Boston's Fianna are invited to join the Sept of Cold Sorrows after their having saved two of the Sept's Bone Gnawers from a deadly confrontation with a pack of frenzied vampires. 1877 Samuel and Norma Tillinghast celebrate the birth of their only child, Heloise Tillighast. Mid-summer in Providence, town leaders, roused by a spate of kidnappings and directed by the Society of Leopold, raid the Starry Wisdoom Church and execute Bowen and a number of his chief acolytes. The remainder of the membership is dispersed and run out of town. Left behind in the old church, however, and overlooked by the zealous hunters, is the Shining Trapezohedron, which is left to gather dust in the shadowy structure. 1880 Miskatonic University's new School of Medicine opens it doors to high expectations. 1881 The Starry Wisdom Church of Townshend, Vermont is burned to the ground by the Society of Leopold, the church's entire membership of less than ten lost in the mysterious blaze. 1888 Torrential rains cause heavy flooding along the Miskatonic River, resulting in serious damage in Arkham. The disaster traps Orne in the Labyrinth of Kish, the tunnels leading to the earthly portal submerged in fathoms of icy, black water, too deep and cold for even Derby or Coventry to bypass, though they try many times over the next few years. In Boston, the Arcanum opens its first Chapter House this side of the Atlantic, its Chancellor one of the society's founders, Johnathan Kelvin. 1889 Heloise Tillinghast, now a bawdy-house whore of little worth, gives birth to Charles Tillinghast II, named for her greatgrandfather. The child's father, Benny Walker, is a carousing Dudleytown miner who entertains no notion of marriage or romance with the pale prostitute. 1890 The Nosferatu Lord Warwick, the first of the three Lords of the Triad to arrive in New England, powerful British Cainite elders bent on gaining complete control of the region, extends his Web all the way to distant Concord, New Hampshire, in anticipation of his comrades' arrivals. 1891 The Children of Hecate, a small fertility witch cult based on the worship of the goddess Hecate, an aspect of Shub-Niggurath, is founded in Boston by Asenath Bowen, a relative of Enoch's.

1892 Lord Eldrich Craven, descendant of Ehrlich Craven and likewise member of the Brotherhood of the Beast, is made Magister Templi of the Order of the Oriental Fellowship, an otherwise typical secret society whose sole house is located in the heart of London. Eldrich begins using the Fellowship to further the Brotherhood's secret aims, primarily by using it to network with other like-minded individuals who could provide financial, military, scholarly and scientific support for the Brotherhood in the coming century. 1895 Pendragon and Biltmore, Warwick's fellow Triad Lords, arrive in the region and begin their campaigns of terror. Each is actually the pawn of a different Methuselah: Trajan, Dark Selina and Le Fanu, all who have their own plan for this growing cradle of ideas and power. Jeremy Skelton, the most influential Sabbat vampire in New England by this time, creates the Crimson Tide in response to the merciless pogroms in New Hampshire and Boston by the Triad. Concerned "patriot" vampires form the Kindred of Liberty, a Camarilla resistance group devoted to the downfall of the British invaders. 1896 The Battle of Bloods Brook takes place in Lebanon, New Hampshire between Pendragon's forces and the Crimson Tide. The Sabbat group scores a resounding victory over Pendragon, drawing new battle lines. 1897 During a particularly wild "ritual mass" the Children of Hecate apparently summon forth the goddess they profess to worship, Hecate herself! This enigmatic and ungodly powerful "Dark Lady," a manifestation of Shub-Niggurath, exhibits vampiric qualities and slays half the cult in a blood feast. Asenath Bowen and the other survivors become instant fanatics and rededicate themselves to serving their goddess. Without any clear instructions or direction from Hecate, however, they are left to invent not only their own practices, but their own purpose, which never truly becomes clear beyond the obligatory obesience. During a crucial meeting of the Order of the Oriental Fellowship in London, Lord Craven, with the help of his fellow cultists, opens a gate to Malfeas, thereby declaring himself the Laird of Demborough. Due to the unexpected interference of other occultists, the black rite is cut short and the Fellowship's lodge is burned to the ground. In the confusion Craven, the Laird, escapes with the aid of his dark comrades and flees London, traveling north to Demborough to rebuild his cult and regain spiritual and magical stength. 1900 Warwick destroys all the Kindred of Providence in one fell swoop and begins exploring and familiarizing himself with the rest of the region's honeycombed underworld as directed by his hidden master, Trajan, recruiting and creating new agents along the way. The Malkvaian Ann Curwen survives the slaughter, however, and flees in terror in a mad quest for her long-dead brother, Charles. 1901 A group of influential men, all guests of Lord Craven's at the final night of the Order of the Oriental Fellowship and peripheral members of the Brotherhood of the Beast, convene in New York City to form the Seventh Generation, a sect thoroughly devoted to the insidious corruption and destruction of women and children as a means to bring about the end of the world, at which time the Wyrm will return. 1903 Richad Upton Pickman of Salem, an otherwise middling artist, spontaneously awakens after persusing his family's Greek copy of the Necronomicon. The Orphan comes to the attention of the international art world, his bizarre paintings of octopoid beings and alien landscapes quickly demanding outrageous prices from serious collectors, earning him instant fame and applause. The paintings are said to bring strange images and visions to those who gaze at them long enough.

1904 The doors to the Tillighast Mansion are locked forever with the death of the last of the known family, Captain Sander Tillinghast. The entire estate is entrusted to Brown University with the understanding that it shall not be disturbed... ever. Over the years, however, the occassional ghosthunter has been given special dispensation to explore the home, though most have never wanted to come back again. 1905 Cholera breaks out in Arkham and the vicinity, causing some survivors to leave town for good, the result of some experiments of the Black Triangle. The painter Pickman leaves Salem for a handsome townhouse in Boston's Beacon Hill district, his fame making him a mini-celebrity even before his arrival. This year the Laird of Demborough announces the formation of the Pretanic Order, a splinter group of the Brotherhood of the Beast dedicated to "proving" to the parent cult that the Laird, Eldrich Craven, is actually the "chosen one" meant to lead the Wyrm back to this world. This teaching is counter to the main body of the Brotherhood which steadfastly believes that the messiah will be the reborn Nephren-Ka. 1906 During a Shadow Lord assault upon the Black Spiral Dancer pack Squallor's Kith, Ahkempotet's Scroll is rescued from the dying hands of the pack's theurge by Ezekiel du Erlette, great-great-greatgrandson of the infamous Gilles. Ezekiel flees in the hopes of saving the important document from his pack's foes, seeking refuge among kinfolk in the nearby White Mountain village of Lords Bridge before finally succumbing to degenerative wounds received in the battle two months later. The Scroll is simply tossed in the attic by the kinfolk, clueless as to its worth. 1907 From the foul seed of the late Ezekiel and the womb of his kinfolk whore, the inbred revenant Charity Bratovich, springs Tom Bratovich. In September the Brotherhood of the Beast adopts a radical new purpose: the complete destruction of the world in order to please Nyarlothotep, feeling that their previous plan to create the perfect human vessel for the Beast has proven too difficult. 1909 Ann Curwen makes her way to Norwich, Connecticut and, finding the mental hospital there reminiscent of her Providence haven, she declares herself Prince of that town and nearby New London. That summer Warwick's Web finally reaches Montpelier. The appointed Strandmaster, Hamilton Simms, sets up shop in an old salt cellar beneath abandoned Silverwood Manor, hoping that the place's evil reputation (he does not believe the stories of the place's evil past) will allow him to carry out his duties in quiet. 1910 A disastrous fire rages through the Arcanum's Boston Chapter House, destroying much of its archives and valuable research materials. The conflagration was instigated by the Children of Hecate in connection with the Arcanum's recent interest in that cult and the mysterious Dark Lady they worship. 1913 Vladimir Tepes, recently recovered from torpor in Eastern Europe, arrives on the coast of Maine and buys vast wilderness properties in the nearby mountains. Later that year he begins construction on a fortified medieval monestary nestled amid the jagged peaks to serve as his personal haven, modeled on his former Carfex Abbey property in London. Also this year the mammoth Premium Oil Company becomes the global centerpiece for the creation of PENTEX by the Brotherhood of the Beast. 1914 Fearing that the Giovanni are moving in and will soon make a grab at all of Connecticut, Upton Rowlands seizes the Princedom of Hartford in addition to his seat in New Haven. 1916 The Larid of Demborough and his followers, the Pretanic Order, depart the British Isle due to their growing conflicts with the Brotherhood of the Beast and that parent sect's desire to suppress them and keep them weak. The Pretanic Order arrives in New York and

purchases a deserted mining town in the Adirondacks, Morrisville. There, upon the foundations of a former abbatoir, the Laird consecrates the grounds to the Wyrm and begins building a home for his group to be named Phelegma Abbey. 1917 His haven complete, Tepes founds the Order of the Undying to serve him, its members revenants who wish to reclaim or maintain their humanity, the first monks being personal servants from Tepes' past. 1924 At the bestial age of twenty-four Tom Bratovich lays claim to his hellish legacy by raping Ellen Dennehy, the young bride of vacationing FBI agent Patrick O'Shaughnessy, before killing and eating the husband before her unbelieving eyes. The shocked widow returns to Washington to attend her husband's ceremonial funeral and to give birth to the child which she promises to God to raise with love, his father's namesake, Patrick. 1926 The Orphan mage Richard Pickman vanishes from his Beacon Hill home in Boston. The painter succeeded in discovering exactly how to draw a distant and alien umbral realm, effectively creating a gate to that very place. Unable to resist the pull of this new world, Pickman simply left this world behind. A number of his works, dangerous magickal talismans themselves, are left behind in his attic. 1927 A formidably armed band of withhunters, led by the unceasing agents of the Society of Leopold, raids Arkham in the hopes of rooting out and destroying the darkness that they are sure has deep roots in the sleepy town. Recognizing that any confrontation would draw the further attention of the mages of Doissetep, Coventry, Derby and Curwen abandon their chantry and take what they can with them, saying a hasty goodbye to Arkham and relocating to Coventry's long-abandoned chantry house in Salem, safe in the knowledge that the withhunters will not have any luck locating Orne or the submerged portal leading to the Labyrinth of Kish. 1930 Miskatonic University is forced to close St. Mary's Teaching Hospital, drastically slash a number of programs and fire a host of staff due to financial disaster caused by the Depression. This marks the beginning of the school's still-continuing decline. 1931 Coventry attempts to regain control of her former herd, the current Order of the Golden Dawn, but fails due to the power of its leader, the crone Kathryn Van Dorn, and her Verbena adepts. 1933 Charlotte Hawkins, a senior member of the Arcanum's Boston Chapterhouse, establishes a branch of that secretive academic society just off campus of Miskatonic University, drawn by the numerous tales that surround the sleepy and half-forgotten town of Arkham. 1934 Coventry and Derby, in a further attempt to regain control of the Order of the Golden Dawn and the blasphemous r Codex in its possession, send Curwen to infiltrate the troublesome coven and take charge. Also that year a young doctor of Providence, curious about strange disturbances in the old Free Will Church, investigates and discovers the Shining Trapezohedron. Though no expert on such things, the wise physician takes the artifact far out into Narragansett Bay and tosses it to the bottom, hopefully out of the hands of humanity forever. Finally, Charles Tillinghast II and his blushing bride, Susannah Hewitt, announce the proud birth of their firstborn, Nathaniel Tillinghast. 1935 Coventry has Kathryn Van Dorn killed by Gargoyles while the witch is on a trip to visit the Brocken in central Germany. The news wracks the Order of the Golden Dawn as two competing factions struggle for supremacy and control over the Order's considerable assets. 1936 Joseph Curwen finally gets his hands on the Codex and uses its knowledge to destroy some of his opponents in his battle for control of the Golden Dawn. His opponents realize the danger they are in and, rather than accepting his leadership, depart to form their own order, the Cloven Hoof Coven in Manchester, New Hampshire, under the

leadership of one of their number, the Verbena warlock Phillip Carter. The new coven dedicates themselves to regaining possession of the sacred Codex from their former colleagues, still believing that the spirits of Thorne and Grey are trapped in the work and can somehow be freed to lead the faithful to power one day. 1942 Charles and Susannah Tillinghast move to Hartford, Susannah's home town, escaping the decay of Dudleytown and its failing mining industry. There Charles' is set-up with a secure position with his father-in-law's insurance firm. In mid-summer Phelegma Abbey in the Adirondacks is raided and razed by a coalition of Garou and lawenforcement Kinfolk who can no longer stand for this blasphemous horror in their midst (publically justifying the attack as one upon Nazi allies). Nearly all of the Pretanic Order is slain, but a few acolytes and the Order's leader, the Laird, do manage to escape via deep subterranean tunnels where they find temporary refuge with the true Black Spiral Dancers from the Dank Well Hive. 1944 Patrick O'Shaughnessy marries his childhood sweetheart, Maureen Hayden in Washington, days before he is shipped off to Germany to fight the Nazis scourge. 1945 Army Sergeant O'Shaughnessy returns to the United States to discover his wife's death only weeks before in a car accident. His heart shattered, he leaves Washington to seek solace in drink and companionship among relatives in Boston, where he is offered a job on the police force. 1957 Nathaniel Tillinghast takes over his father's position at the insurance firm after his father Charles dies of degenerative heart failure, caused, the doctor's believe, by tin toxins in his system. 1958 After years of lonliness, Patrick O'Shaughnessy, startlingly young for his age, marries a spry waitress, Mary Keenan. 1959 The newly-wed Mary O'Shaughnessy gives birth to a healthy daughter, Megan Ann, in the early spring. 1960 Nathaniel Tillinghast marries Marion Schlimmer, a secretary at his Hartford firm. 1962 Richard Tillinghast is born to Nathaniel and Marion. He is the direct descendant of the bastard Eliza Tillinghast and her rape by brother Ambrose, being her son Charles' great-great-great-great grandson and blood-heir to the malignant Tillinghast legacy -- though not its dessicating fortunes. 1963 Sean-Patrick O'Shaughnessy is born in Boston to Mary and Patrick O'Shaughnessy, their second child. 1964 Ethan Lear Grimaldi is born in Boston to Leah Lear. His father Arthur is the bastard child of Sander Tillinghast and his short-lived affair with Annabella Grimaldi, a wealthy banker's widow from Boston and loyal revenant of the Sabbat who actually loved the well-bred Sander, though it remained her secret. 1969 Catalyzed by the popular explosion of harmony and dreaming across America, the world's trods suddenly surge open once again and the Kith of the fae are able to return to earth. 1970 A motley of Kithain, fleeing from Sidhe in the seeming of police, came to deserted Dudleytown in search of refuge. The power of Graymere Glen and its guardians, the Schnorrflers, protected the commoners from their noble pursuers, driving the seething Sidhe away. 1977 Sean-Patrick, after a few years of troubled dreams and a vague but growing paranoia, is "rescued" from his mundane life by Boston's Fianna Garou and undergoes the Change, coming full into his Garou heritage. Unknown to both himself and his sept, he is actually the heir of Black Spiral Dancer blood, ergo White Howler blood. His father has the police force scour the city for his return, only to come up empty-handed. In the cold of December he undegoes his Rite of Passage and is made a full member of the Sept of Cold Sorrows.

1978 Ethan's parents die in a plane crash in France, a tragedy arranged by his uncle, Michael Grimaldi, partly because he suspected that Ethan's father Arthur was a secret traitor to the Sabbat and partly because he had always been jealous of the way Annabella favored Arthur over himself. Though Annabella has no proof of his guilt, she orders Michael to leave her grandson Ethan alone, telling him that she will introduce him to his revenant inheritance "when she sees fit." 1981 Sean-Patrick returns to his parents' home to tell them he is all right. He explains that he was "in trouble" and says little else, assuring them that he will visit now and then. Also, the Order of the Undying contacts Annabella in the belief that she would make a suitable recruit. By autumn she takes her vows and becomes a monk of the traitorous order. 1982 Ethan Grimaldi leaves his uncle's house to "tough it out" on his own in Boston. 1984 Ethan and Sean-Patrick meet in Boston's dark underbelly when Ethan, working as a private detective, stumbles upon a down-and-dirty fight between a vampire and some Fianna cubs, Sean-Patrick among them. Though the Delirium causes Ethan to forget most of what he sees, some bits of the encounter remain buried within his head, elements which years later are still creeping into murky dreams. 1985 Zachariah Slane is contacted by Coventry and offered a way to gain the princedom of Boston. In return he need only give his promise of secrecy and trust. With little to lose and much to gain, Slane bites at the jagged hook and begins to learn of the Way of the Wyrm. 1986 Ethan Grimaldi meets Melissa Cambridge, a beautiful young woman from a prestigious New York family (her father is a US Congressman) who is interning in Boston while a student at Georgetown University. 1987 With financial assistance from family, Ethan Grimaldi begins study at Georgetown University. Marius Valentine, Master Euthantos of the Order of the Silent Threnody is contacted by Joseph Russo of the Consanguinity of Eternal Joy, an infamous subsect within the Euthanatos Tradition that calls Helekar House their home. Russo is based at the Helekar's Miami House and is a member of the chantry's Abyssian cabal, a circle of mages who believe that only by plunging one's perceptions into the utterdark, can one truly find truth. 1991 Michael Grimaldi accuses his mother Annabella of being a traitor to her Sabbat masters, based on evidence he has been gathering. Their Tzimisce patron, Gregor Lrincze of Augusta, Maine, speaking through his childe, the Priscus Righteous Endeavor Clay, demands she appear to face the charges, but she vanishes instead, taking refuge in the Black Mountains with her new "family," the Order of the Undying. 1992 Ethan Grimaldi marries "Lissa." Only days later his wife is killed in a car accident in Vermont meant to end both their lives, courtesy of Michael Grimaldi, who seeks to rectify the errors of his missing mother. As a side effect of the traumatic incident, Ethan's sleeping Avatar Awakens to its magickal potential. That same year Slane is made a full member of the Order of the Wyrm and becomes apprentice to Coventry. Also this year, Sascha Rominoff, a Sidhe Wilder, comes to Graymere Glen in Dudleytown and experiences her Chrysalis, thereafter claiming the sacred glen as her own holding. 1993 Ethan is "found" by the Euthanatos Marius Valentine of Old Lyme, who takes the neophyte mage under his grim wing. With astonishing alacrity, Ethan's magickal potential is made startlingly clear to Valentine, who begins to wonder at the reason for the young man's unnatural prowess. Even so, in order to protect him from outside detection and influences, Valentine brings Ethan into the Order of the Silent Threnody as his Disciple. 1994 The Malkavian Triad Lord, Biltmore, discovers and opens a discreet dialogue with Coventry and her evil cabal, hoping to convince

them to provide him some assistance in ridding New England once and for all of its Sabbat infestation. By summer Ethan proves to his master that he has achieved the tremendous power of an Adept, and, though the speed of his advancement causes more than a few rumors, the Threnody accords him such status. In addition, Sir Denis Millard, a Sidhe noble and upper-crust snob from Hartford, graduates Harvard with his degree in Archaeology and visits Dudleytown to begin his devious wooing of Lady Sascha. In late August Klaus Van Dorn of the Cloven Hoof Coven, the son of the cult's martyr Kathryn Van Dorn and a dissatisfied member of the coven, gets his hands on Ahkempotet's Scroll after one of du Erlette's kinfolk descendants puts it up for sale. This is not pure coincidence, however, as the spectre of Gilles du Erlette, now a very dangerous and powerful Doppelgnger, is actually responsible. Du Erlette, driven by his dark passion to rebuild the Hive of the Black Goat at Silverbrook -- now a powerful Haunt rent with Nihils and home to many servants of Oblivion -- believes that if he can provide some powerful occultist with Ahkempotet's knowledge, then that individual might return to the haunted manor, find a way to bypass the wards placed upon it by the Silver Fangs, and shatter the bonds that keep the Nexus Crawler imprisoned. This would surely attract the attention of Black Spiral Dancers who would then be able to return to their former sanctuary and reestablish the Hive, providing du Erlette not only with satisfaction, but Pathos and Memoriam. Phillip Carter, High Warlock of the Cloven Hoof, however, upon learning of Klaus' acquisition, takes possession of the document "for the good of the coven." Not knowing Sanskrit himself, Carter simply locks up the work out of spite and to keep the troublesome Van Dorn in his place. Du Erlette, unwilling to let his plans go to ruin, learns of Zachariah Slane and his desire to rule Boston and sees his opportunity. Using his dark influence upon the vampire's mind, in October the Doppelgnger causes Slane to hear of the Cloven Hoof Coven's new acquisition, from Van Dorn, no less. With little nudging from the spectre, Slane tricks the warlock into stealing Ahkempotet's Scroll from his comrades and turning it over to him, whereupon Slane kills Van Dorn and sets out for Silverbrook Manor, mentioned in the Sanskrit text as the site of the imprisoned offspring of ShubNiggurath. There he begins intensive study of the arcane work and conducts experiments to determine the correct procedure for actually summoning, binding and commanding the demon-thing, all under the watchful and eager gaze of the spectre that was once Gilles du Erlette, who delights as the Nihil in the manor's ritual chamber begins to grow with every sacrifice and dark spell committed by the vampire magus. 1995 In the first days of January Zachariah Slane kidnaps a number of intrusive college kids to use as sacrificial bait in his summonings. A partially successful ritual results in Slane's beind driven temporarily mad with fear, his wits returning days later a great distance away. Suffering from serious temporary amnesia, the Tremere makes his way to Boston more out of habit than anything else. In a near-disastrous encounter the magus meets the Garou Sean-Patrick and a packmate of his while feeding on a young woman. Slane manages to escape the grievous claws of the Lupines with the help of a Tremere neonate on the lookout for him, Deirdre Calleain, whom he afterwards pumps for information and then dominates into service. The two leave Boston and retrace Slane's steps, which eventually lead them back to Silverbrook Manor. This time, using Deirdre as an unwilling sacrifice herself, Slane attempts once more to call forth the foul Wyrm-spawn. His long-range plans are ruined, however, by the arrival of a pack of Wendigo who had a brief run-in with Slane a month before and seek vengeance. The werewolves wound Slane severely, though not before he

completes his ritual of summoning, siccing Shub-Niggurath's Dark Get upon its natural enemies. The unearthly battle between the Bane and the Garou gives Slane time to flee into the sanctuary of the tunnels below the mansion where he finds a safe place to hide and slip into a regenerative torpor. Though the foul Bane is badly wounded, it is not destroyed and it shambles off into the dark wilderness to the delight of the everpresent yet unseen Gilles du Erlette. Only a single Wendigo remains to bear witness to Gaia's loss, the survivor Araquois, who swears upon his ancestors to hunt down this fiend and put an end to the blasphemy of its existence -- alone, if he must. Du Erlette sets a band of spectral allies on this Wendigo's trail to ensure that his revenge is never achieved, servitors of Oblivion quite practiced in driving the Quick insane or leading them to their own demise. In the fall Ethan Grimaldi slays his mentor, Marius Valentine in a sudden bestial frenzy, the result of his revenant nature beginning to assert itself. In struggling to control himself the crazed mage suffers a powerful Paradox backlash and succumbs to a severe fall into the maddening forever of Quiet. The catatonic mage is found by the authorities and admitted to Norwich Mental Hospital for evaluation and treatment, the trail of paperwork left behind muddled and lost in the arcane streams of ever-shifting reality. At the hospital he is frequently visited by the Prince of Norwich, Ann Curwen, who is drawn to his strange demeanor in a way that confounds her. 1996 Ethan Grimaldi is released from the hospital after he begins causing Ann Curwen too many nightmares while lost in Quiet. The Order of the Silent Threnody receives an invitation from Doissetep's Delono House to become part of that prestigious chantry. Doissetep's representative is Klaus Hortemone, leader of the Followers of Tytalus, who has been in contact with the Order's Miriam Koch for some time regarding their shared secret desire to reunite the lost House Tremere with the Order of Hermes at large. The Tillinghast Chronicles Begin... The following are actual stories as played out by myself and my players. Feel free to ignore these completely, or use them as guidelines to get your own chronicle started. The bits below are actually brief synopses of how our stories actually ran, not necessarily how I intended them to run! Dark Awakening 2/96 Ethan rediscovers much of his past, presenting himself to his chantry in New Haven and being accepted back and acquitted of the murder of his former mentor, though the verdict is not unanimous. He then takes up residence again in Valentine's Old Lyme sanctum, hoping to legally acquire it in due time, and begins poring over his mentor's library and personal files to learn what he can about the suspected Nephandus' dealings and corrupt contacts. The Order of the Silent Threnody is also given a formal invitation to join Doissetep, an offer that is not to be taken lightly. The Threnody's Seneschal, Alain Deis, begins careful consideration of the proposal. Hell's Piper 3/96 Sean-Patrick, returning to Boston from a conciliatory trip to the caern, hits and kills a lone Wendigo with his car. Before his final breath is gone, however, the Wendigo Araquois makes the Fianna swear to find a mysterious and powerful Bane called the Piper and destroy it. After brief consultation with his tribal elders, SeanPatrick makes the trip to Silverbrook Manor, where Araquois told him the Piper had been. There he makes the acquaintance of Ethan, who had been visited the night before by the ghost of one of the fraternity boys sacrificed by Slane in his rituals at Silverbrook, Winston Douglas III, whose family lives in Old Lyme. Winston pleaded with

Ethan to help him avenge his murderer, asking him to go to Silverbrook to find and destroy Slane, promising to do Ethan any favor in return - to which Ethan agrees. Unfortunately for Ethan, the wraith that visits him is NOT who it claims to be, but is actually the Doppelgnger imposter Gilles du Erlette. Seeking someone to help him achieve his desire of rebuilding the Hive of the Black Goat, the powerful spectre decided to find the Euthanatos, Master Valentine, who he had heard of among wraith society during his infiltration as a potential ally. Upon discovering that Ethan had assumed the master's place and was not as far along the path of Descent as Valentine had been, the spectre decided to take a less direct tack and trick Ethan into believing it was actually Winston Douglas III, figuring that the young mage might thereby be motivated to aid such a pathetic soul in its desire for solace and revenge. And, despite Ethan's powerful magicks, the plan worked. At Silverbrook Ethan and Sean-Patrick pore over the library's books and explore the mouldering ruin, finding Ahkempotet's Scroll and Slane's personal journal in the secret ritual chamber in the basement (as du Erlette wishes). The spectre also suddenly recognizes that Sean-Patrick is a direct descendant of his and immediately begins to make plans to "bring him over to the dark side" where he will inherit his ancestor's dark legacy and even lead the reborn Hive of the Black Goat as du Erlette once had in life! The characters recognize that a powerful summoning ritual had taken place here and that it seems that a spirit of some might had crossed through the Gauntlet here, entering our world. Slane, aware of the characters' actions, uses his dark arts to summon some fomori to the vicinity in order to slay or drive away the trespassers and potential threats. The fomori are no match for the combined efforts of the Euthanatos and the Fianna and only pique the interest of the two comrades, however. Hoping to find the malefic source of the weird piping they hear in the night air, Ethan and Sean-Patrick march through the forest until they arrive at nearby Lake Groton. There they meet many more fomori, as well as the Piper, a powerful demonic Bane from Beyond. The confrontation is ended quickly when Ethan transmutes the entire lake into napalm and then ignites it, destroying everything except himself and his ally, a tactic that is planted in his mind unwittingly by du Erlette, who is well aware that such a catastrophe will send spiritual shockwaves throughout the region and alert any Black Spiral Dancers to the power of the place. Over the next few days the two pack up du Erlette's former library and then burn Silverbrook Manor to the ground, the act of arson also the result of du Erlette's manipulation, for the spectre knows that if the manor is destroyed, so are the wards placed upon it by the Silver Fangs! Afterwards, the two companions part ways, with Ethan taking all but a few books that Sean-Patrick wished to keep for himself, to the delight of du Erlette who hopes that reading his foul tomes will only draw the two characters closer to the dark orb of Oblivion and into serving du Erlette's unholy interests. Sunglasses After Dark The events at Lake Groton draw the attention of both the FBI and the NWO, the former sending a junior agent to simply determine the origins and reasons for the explosion, while the latter sends a team of Men In Black to put an end to any supernatural activity that might have been responsible and to hush up any dangerous truths. FBI agent Emory Shaw sets a whole slew of things in motion when he faxes an aerial photo of the site of the explosion to the Bureau office in Boston, where it catches the attention of the Special Affairs Division's East Coast Director, Marsha Crowe, kinfolk to New York Silver Fangs. She recognizes the event as involving a powerful Bane and contacts her Garou relatives, who then send a Silver Fang and a

Silent Strider to investigate. The MIB's lose their opportunity to silence Shaw for good when the Garou show up and attempt to take them down, a scenario which only causes the Technocracy to send more agents to the scene. In the end, the technomancers kill the Silver Fang and capture the Strider, while the surviving MIB's hunt down Shaw, who seeks out O'Shaughnessy and Grimaldi based on clues he discovers in Montpelier. The Technocracy's agents find Shaw and Ethan in Old Lyme and a shootout occurs, leaving the MIB's dead. Soon afterwards Sean-Patrick shows up and more agents of the Technocracy, the NWO/Iteration X Regulators, arrive, resulting in an even more brutal situation, though again handing the Union a loss of agents and a Spectre vehicle. Shaw finally leaves, planning to return to Montpelier and take a closer look at what's going on there. After receiving a visit from the ghost of Winston again (du Erlette, of course), Ethan decides he and Sean-Patrick had better return to Silverbrook, find and destroy Slane, and rescue the captured Garou if possible, without further delay. (Du Erlette, no longer needing Slane for his purposes, hopes that the characters will simply destroy the potentially troublesome vampire before he gets in the way.) The two arrive back at the ruins of the manion and discover the dormant Womb of the Black Goat. They also encounter a frenzied Zachariah Slane, and after some difficulty, put an end to the foul vampire -- or so they believe! In truth, Slane survives the brutal assault upon himself due to a powerful ritual performed long ago which affords him incredible protection from aggravated wounds. Nevertheless, to avoid eventual destruction he leaps into a deep pit at the bottom of which is viscous slime, runoff from the foul Womb above. Slane then begins his slow recovery once again, this time with the faces of his most recent hunters clearly in his mind's eye. Revenge is a new emotion for this powerful undead magus.... Continuing on to find and rescue the Garou they believe is held captive near Lake Groton, the player characters encounter a team of Progenitor researchers on their way to retrieve the transport the captive themselves. Without too much trouble the two vengeaful companions waste no time in wiping out the Union's agents and pushing onward in their mission. A short time later, however, Sean-Patrick makes a terrible mistake when he comes upon FBI agent Shaw, and thinking him an enemy, tears him to ribbons. His death is not unsung, however, for Shaw had been making extensive tapes of his entire investigation and had sent his latest transcription to another agent firend in the Bureau earlier that day. Ethan and Sean-Patrick finally came upon a small hunting lodge in the woods guarded by two HIT Marks, courtesy of Iteration X. After a hair-raising confrontation both biomechs were destroyed and the captive and drugged Silent Strider, Walks-With-Death was rescued. The trio drove to Hartford to avoid any further entanglements to recover, after which they continued on to lay low in Ethan's Old Lyme home. Aftermath The events at Silverbrook and nearby Lake Groton are pivotal and have rent the relatively stable spiderweb of supernatural activities and relationships asunder to a large degree. First and foremost, the release of the Bane and its banishment from this plane has sent a powerful spiritual shockwave throughout the region, something that has not gone unnoticed by more sensative supernatural entities. Many Garou throughout New England felt the Wyrm-ish ripple, especially in the Umbrascape where Banes have become roused and drawn to the accursed site in droves, making it especially dangerous for the warriors of Gaia to get near the place without drawing unwanted attention. But these shapeshifters are not the only ones on this side of the Velvet Curtain who have been affected by the incidences.

Spirals: Like their hated cousins, the Black Spiral Dancers in the vicinity have felt this Wyrm arousal and assault very strongly, their dark theurges quickly divining the source of the stirrings and passing word on to their packs. These corrupt werewolves have learned now that the powerful wards placed upon Silverbrook Manor and its environs by the Silver Fangs have been destroyed along with the house itself (!), meaning that these servants of the Wyrm may once again return there to celebrate their dark rites, so long impossible. Already a young female Spiral philodox named G'our'lhasshtaka has surfaced claiming to be descended from the now-legendary Gilles du Erlette, and has founded a new pack that is snowballing quickly with new members, The Midwives of Satan, dedicated to returning to the unholy Pit and reopening the foul Womb of the Black Goat. At present they are still gathering recruits throughout Vermont, for they wish to be sure they can handle any obstacles and survive the Rite of Caern Opening. Garou: The Silver Fangs in the nearby Greem Mountains are too bogged down with internal politics to act with any haste and the Shadow Lords of the White Mountains are still unaware of the danger. The Sept of Cold Sorrows is just beginning to learn of the events there and are hesitant to cross over into Wendigo territory anyway, especially after Sean-Patrick's having killed, albeit accidentally, one of their members. The Silent Striders, however, are already beginning to spread warnings about the place and the possible consequences should the power of the Wyrm there go unchecked. Mages: While Zachariah Slane is recovering in the tunnels below Silverbrook's rubble, the rest of the Black Triangle in Salem -Coventry, Derby and Curwen -- are planning to do little more than send an agent or two to take a look and then simply wait for Slane's return -- or not. These Nephandi really care little about events there so long as they do not draw attention to them somehow. These three have their own more important concerns in Salem and Arkham to consider, first and foremost a way to access the portal to the Labyrinth of Kish below the Orne House in Arkham. Though Derby is aware of Silverbrook's dark power, he is also well aware of the forces that would have to be overcome if he were to try and acquire the site, not to mention the unwanted limelight. The trio consider the place a loss and intend to forget it unless the Black Spiral Dancers should reestablish a firm and dependable hold on the place. Should this occur, the Black Triangle might just consider reestablishing ties and perhaps a workable alliance. Most other mages in the region, aside from those who have mastery of Entropy and/or Spirit, are not even aware of the significance of the events there, and those who may be are too wary of crossing paths with agents of the Technocratic Union, who were only too obvious on the television newscasts. And lastly, the Cloven Hoof Coven in Manchester, NH is surely curious, the coven's leader having suspected that the site was somehow connected to Ahkempotet's Scroll, before the scroll disappeared. They are keeping their eyes and ears open, primarily by way of raven spies. The Order of the Silent Threnody's Boudain Tsalk has been observing Ethan's activities for some time now via his familiar and is now considering confronting Ethan to learn more about what is going on. Union: While their initial investigation turned up evidence of obvious magickal disturbances resonating with Dynamic Entropy, the NWO could find little else to really go on (considering their denial of the spiritual world in the first place). Once the Garou were found and captured the Progenitors took an active interest simply believing that these lycanthropes were behind the explosion and such, but little caring for the reasons or consequences and more concerned abou the beasts themselves. The loss of Dr. Ishida and party along with two

HIT Marks has simply resulted in the area being labeled off-limits to all Technocracy agents due to an overly-high degree of lycanthropic activity. For now the next course of action is being discussed in Inner Council boardrooms, but aside from the quarantine, it could take many months before a consesus decision is arrived at. The most likely decision, however, will be to instate an area-wide "wolf kill" for the "good of the species," using the usual excuses of disease, etc. Anything more drastic will depend on what happens in the meantime. Sabbat: Mowgli's Order has long avoided Silverbrook and the surrounding area due to its known connection with the Garou and because of its evil hauntings, which have unnerved a few of Mowgli's toughest packmates after spending a night there on a dare once. Now, with the property's destruction by fire and the subsequent investigations by the FBI, police and others, the Gangrel Bishop can no longer simply ignore the place and the outside interest in it. Foremost on his list of concerns is a return by large numbers of Garou (BSD's included) that would threaten his own control over the region. He and his pack have a host of animal spies keeping alert for signs of such intrusion and are even considering examining the ruins of the house more carefully to find just what it is that the Garou are so damned drawn to in the first place. Triad: The most interested party is Warwick, who lost one Strandmaster and another few agents sent to investigate his disappearance. He is worried that the events there might be evidence of the awakining/arrival of one of the Nictuku of legend and is doing all he can to determine whether this is the case or not, relying upon human and animal retainers and contacts to learn what he can. Pendragon knows little but hopes that Mowgli's Order didn't fare well regardless. Sirque has a much better idea as to what really happened, but is hindered from investigating now that Mowgli's Order has increased their vigilance. For now he simply waits for news of Slane to crop up again. Biltmore is even more clueless, knowing and caring nothing about Vermont and having mostly forgotten Slane for the time being. Kindred: Aside from the Sabbat and the Triad, few other vampires have any interest in or knowledge of the events. John Reiss in Hartford is curious to some degree, wondering whether Slane is somehow involved, but doubts this. Finding out what did happen to Slane is still very high on his list of priorities and he is exerting a great deal of unseen influence to find answers. Keziah Mason has long suspected that Slane has some knowledge of or contact with Coventry, and so maintains her own interest in finding anything about the rogue Tremere. Wraiths: Silverbrook Manor is still a powerful Haunt, even moreso than ever before, though the large Nihil in the ritual chamber is growing at a dangerous rate. The place is already infested with Drones and Spectres who fill its horrid halls with their hellish shrieking. Other wraiths avoid the place and give it and its grounds wide berth knowing its reputation. The Doppelgnger, Gilles du Erlette, is currently in Connecticut watching Ethan and Sean-Patrick in the continued hope of using them as his minions and saviors, unbeknownst to either of them, using Ethan as the conduit through which he guides Sean-Patrick to his dark inheritence. He is somewhat worried about the Silent Strider Walks-With-Death, however, for this Garou could possibly discover the truth behind his dark deception and see through his guise as the simple wraith of Winston Douglas III. Du Erlette is keeping a close watch on this werewolf and is hoping to find a way to either use him also or to destroy him outright. Whispers from the Grave

4/96 Sean-Patrick and Walks-With-Death attend the moot at Lake Webster, accompanied secretly by du Erlette's spectral form. Before getting to the bottom of Sean-Patrick's "taint," however, he and Walks-With-Death are allowed to tell their tales. The elders listen with interest and the two are then formally accorded the renown they so richly deserve. Afterwards, there is much celebration and the sept camps out for the remainder of the night. The second night of the moot the Uktena Ritemaster attempts to "cleanse" Sean-Patrick of the Wyrm-taint that he is perceived to be infected by, but even here with the power of the caern, the "taint" will not go away. Calling upon the aid of powerful, enigmatic spirits during the lunar eclispse, the sept theurges learn via powerful dreams (during their trances) that it is Sean-Patrick's own lineage which is tainted, a mark of corruption which cannot simply be washed away! Though these seers cannot actually perceive du Erlette, they announce that the Fianna's "past" is very strong in him and seeks to rule him, news that will horrify all present, especially his pack, and Emma in particular. The sept elders decide, after some debate, that Sean-Patrick must undertake a dangerous quest to search out and destroy the past lives which haunt him, only after which he can reclaim his rightful place among the Garou. Until his quest is complete, however, the elders declare that he may not enter the bawn of a caern again, for it might pose a threat to the Wyld power therein. He is still a part of his tribe and sept, however, though many will likely wish nothing more to do with him. On a final note, however, his pack, the Gloaming Get, stand by his side and reassure him of their support and assistance in his quest. After this Sean-Patrick, the Silent Strider and the Gloaming Get depart from the moot. On the second night of the moot, during the lunar eclipse, Ethan actually sees the form of a ghostly woman fleeing in terror across his property and running towards the sea. She is being pursued by three Renegade slaver wraiths on foot, who recognize her as a member of the Hierarchy. Ethan rescues the girl from her pursuers and allows her some comfort in his home, which she relishes. While in his sanctum, the girl, a Hierarchy administrator and confidante of Rebecca Tillinghast's named Allison Dewarth, glimpses the name d'Erlette in one of the books taken from Silverbrook and recognizes its importance to both Rebecca and Captain Ambrose Tillinghast. Loyal to Rebecca and hoping for promotion, she tells Ethan that a du Erlette once lived in Providence, Rhode Island, but will pretend she knows little else, hoping that Ethan's curiosity will bring him to that city and give her mistress a chance to meet with him and find out what she can. Afterwards she asks Ethan to bring her to the railroad station in Old Saybrook, where she says goodbye and hops a ride aboard the Midnight Express back to Providence Necropolis. The Kindred of New England The Jyhad Behind the darkness of Old New England lie even deeper shadows, figures of power and mystery shrouded in terror and silence. These vampires of old treat the Colonies as no more than another battlefield upon which to wage their wars, their eternal struggle for supremacy and domination over each other shaping much of the world around them. The following are the major players in this great Jyhad: Trajan This fifth generation Nosferatu Methuselah is actually one of the Wazir of the Tal'mahe Ra. His reign in Imperial Rome came to a sudden halt when he was ousted by Clan Ventrue. Later he learned that the Blue Bloods had been put on his scent by Antoine Le Fanu, a dangerous Malkavian Methuselah whose own plans to conquer Gaul had been cut short by Trajan's interference. After a self-induced torpor of reflection, the Nosferatu awoke in the 12th century and swore that

never again would lack of good intelligence result in his failure. And so was born the Web. Today Trajan sits in his lair beneath the British Isle, listening to the tiniest vibrations that ripple through his vast Web. In the United States it is Stanford Warwick who serves as his loyal Webmaster, passing all intelligence back to England. Trajan's longterm goals in New England are three-fold: first, he hopes to increase his status among the Tal'mahe Ra, and by providing the information he can, it should not be difficult; second, he hopes to ferret out factual knowledge about the Nictuku, beings which he is sure do exist; and lastly, he wants to bring the Final Death to both Le Fanu and Dark Selina, reveling in their final downfall and proving his ultimate superiority to them. Nothing will stop him from these goals. Antoine Le Fanu A politically obsessed fifth generation Malkavian Methuselah, Le Fanu met and allied with Dark Selina after his own failure at holding together Imperial Rome, after his vengeaful ousting of the monster Trajan. The alliance between the two, intended to fight the wave of Christianity and keep paganism alive, dissolved after years of successive losses in the face of the hidden Cainites working behind Charlemagne and his armies. After centuries of driving nobles in Britain and Wales insane with his childe William Biltmore, he has found haven in Munich, from where he keeps close tabs on his beloved progeny, waiting to see him humiliate Dark Selina's plans. Dark Selina Once a sixth generation Brujah elder, Selina greedily diablerized her own sire, jealous of the generational superiority of her former ally, Le Fanu. Bristling against the continual erosion of her undead prerogotives in a world of increasingly powerful kine, Selina struck out where she could in the hopes of regaining the lost Golden Age of vampiric domination. She even helped convince Patricia Bollingbroke (aka Tyler) to make the attack that would result in the founding of the Sabbat. Over the years she Embraced Roman Pendragon and was betrayed by him in Switzerland when she tried to take that country for her own. Today she still lies in torpor underneath the Alps, but her power reaches far. Pendragon is still her favored pawn, one who believes his sire long dead and whose days are numbered by his usefulness to her. Selina also controls New England's Sabbat, the Crimson Tide, by posing as an enigmatic and powerful Cardinal of that sect. Her quest for undying power will not diminish and one day she hopes again to be able to stride down the public streets exulting in her vampiric glory, no longer having to hide from the worthless kine as her kind must shamefully now do. Connecticut Bridgeport (3 Brujah, 1 Malkavian, 2 Setites) Richie Pullman -- [Brujah VII] Prince of Bridgeport. Since coming to power in 1986 over the body of the former Prince, the Ventrue clan scapegoat Rudolph Southerly, and his meager entourage, Richie has laid waste to the former assets of the Blue-Bloods and let mayhem and destruction reign in "his" city. With more pressing concerns (and no one really willing to dare accuse the Brujah in defense of Southerly) clan Ventrue let Bridgeport go to the dogs, writing off the city as a simple loss. Now Richie and his childer rule the streets from the heart of the municipality's horrid ghettos, giving little care to the state of the town or its citizens. Most Kindred believe that Richie will be simple to remove once another clan takes interest in the city again, but Richie is already making plans for that and is creating an army of Blood Bound ghouls among the numerous gangs and outfitting them with a military arsenal to defend themselves with. Sadly, Richie does not realize that the Followers of Set are happily making him and his "army" fully dependent upon them and are the real, albeit

invisible, power behind the scenes. Despite Richie's anarchical bent, he has formally declared himself Prince and already destroyed a small coterie of Anarchs who wished to take his new prize from him, something he is not about to do. He is also just beginning to learn that unless he presents a more "prince-like" front and pays more attention to the Traditions, those rumors of Archons may give way to the real thing and his whole party will be over. And if that comes to pass, the Anarchs will not be there to forgive so easily. Groton (1 Ventrue) Claire Wheeler -- [Ventrue XI] Prince of Groton and Stonington. A former Yale Business School student, Claire was Embraced in 1898 to serve as a financial wizard who could help bring the clan into the 20th century. After her clan's near-total pullout of Connecticut's most southeasterly region following WWII, Claire remained behind to squeeze every last drop of profit from its industries and businesses. Today, aside from her ghoul retainers, she remains effectively alone, the sole surviver and self-proclaimed Prince of all of this part of the state, though her principal haven is in a stone cottage at Avery Point in Groton from which she spends countless hours gazing at the sea. Until a few years ago she had lost nearly all her prestige due to her seclusion, but she is suddenly faced with a means of regaining that lost prestige with the opening of the Foxwoods Casino complex in nearby Ledyard. The unanticipated success of this operation has caused her phone to begin ringing again and today she is struggling to meet the challenge of taking control of the casino, fighting off jealous Ventrue and Tremere and Giovanni who want if for themselves, and extending her domain to include the casino, despite the obvious gerrymandering required and the lack of resources and backup. Claire has even turned to neighboring Prince Ann Curwen and promised her a cut of the profits if she backs her up in her plans, something which Ann has yet to weight in on, though she has shown a friendly interest. So far the canny Ventrue is showing all comers why she was chosen by her clan in the first place and has managed to make quite a bit of progress. Her only real mistep so far is her complete failure to recognize the casino as a Lupine operation, an oversight that in time could prove quite fatal. At the moment, however, Claire's star is beginning to rise and her name can be heard on the lips of many of the nation's Blue-Bloods. Only time will tell whether her star is merely a fiery comet or something more permanent. Hartford (2 Ventrue, 9 Tremere, 1 Nosferatu, 2 Setites) Upton Rowlands -- [Ventrue VIII] Prince of Hartford and New Haven, and President of the Gemini League. While this opportunistic Cainite is first and foremost the Prince of New Haven and maintains his normal haven and activities there, he also keeps a regular presence in his Hartford domain (his since 1908], where he has another handful of havens for his private use. Most of the night-to-night running of the city is left in the trusted hands of his childe and Seneschal Elaine duBray, the mere threat of his attentions being enough to ensure his control over the state capital. His primary threat is naturally the Tremere chantry located downtown, but for the present his very indebtedness to that clan prevents him from making any moves against them aside from containment. Should an opportunity to pay off that debt arise, however, the story might be quite different. See New Haven below for more details. Elaine duBray -- [Ventrue IX] Seneschal of Hartford and childe of Upton Rowlands. Elaine has been her sire's direct agent in Hartford since he first took control of the city and has always maintained her loyalty to her clan and to Rowlands himself (and not just because of her Blood Bond to him, something that her sire felt imperitive considering the fate of the last Ventrue Prince and the dark arts of

the greedy Tremere.). Elaine rarely leaves Hartford, in order to keep as much of Rowland's presence alive at all times, instead joining in telephone conference calls and now video conferences with her fellow clan members. She owns a large number of properties in Hartford and remains vigilant for any signs of intrusion or interference, things she will report immediately. Elaine's public haven is a three-story penthouse overlooking the lights of the capital, though she has other more secret ones strewn about. She is on good terms with the Tremere Regent, though this is more out of necessity than true desire. Nonetheless, she is treated by the magi with the respect her position demands and most problems are dealt with diplomatically and efficiently. John Reiss -- [Tremere VII] Regent of the Hartford Chantry and Vice President of the Gemini League. Since his appointment as Regent of his clan's new chantry in 1832 John Reiss has done what he could to increase his own stature and influence in New England. Unfortunately there have been far too many obstacles to overcome and today rumors abound of Vienna's looming Letter of Invitation, or more bluntly, Reiss' death knell. With his clan's Pontifex of Finance in Stamford and the Ventrue having successfully claimed the title of Prince in the city during the power vacuum at the turn of the century, not to mention Warwick's apparently unpunished crimes against the magi in the past hundred years, the Regent's prestige has been assaulted on all sides. To make matters even worse word has begun to leak out about Zachariah Slane's treason, even further damaging his standing among his kind. Only his vast financial resources in the region, which have enabled him to exert substantial control over the Gemini League, and a boon he holds over clan Ventrue's head for past aid given give him any real chance to recover what he has lost. Whether the Regent can actually succeed is another matter. When not meeting with his retainers or presiding over some economic strategy meeting Reiss is usually found in the bowels of his wellprotected chantry house, dabbling in the magical arts and improving his thaumaturgical talents. He rules his chantry with an iron hand, his subtle smile unipressive cover for his cold tactics. Fearing an overthrow or some similar threat from within he does all he can to limit internal promotion and he frequently demeans and ignores the successes of those beneath him, slowing their advancement to a crawl. This attitude has earned him a great deal of vile nicknames within the house, something which he secretly delights in. Keziah Mason -- [Tremere VII] Childe of Madelaine Coventry and former member of the Order of the Wyrm. This former witch and apprentice to Samuel Bridgewater (Orne) was Embraced by Coventry after being rescued from witchhunters in old Salem. A devoted childe for over a hundred years to her blasphemous sire, Keziah was traumatized when Coventry abandoned her and the rest of the Salem Chantry to the ravages of the Sabbat in 1831. After her escape and acceptance in the new Hartford Chantry Keziah renounced her sire and the Order of the Wyrm and swore to one day drink the soul of her traitorous creator and the wizard who literally handed her to Coventry in the first place, Bridgewater/Orne. She has spent the past 160-odd years readying herself for that day of vengeance, both by learning all she can of her enemies' power (Dark Thaumaturgy, for example) and by using whatever resources she can to locate the fiends. In the field of magical research she has created a number of spatial and teleportational rituals which are the envy of many within the chantry. In order to find her foes she has relied heavily upon Warwick's Web, unbeknownst to others, and is on very good, though secretive, terms with the local Sewer Rat. She also employs her homonculus, Brown Jenkin, as familiar with the tunnels beneath New England as any Nosferatu, to carry out a host of spying missions on her behalf. For the past few years Keziah has suspected

that Zachariah Slane might have some knowledge of Coventry's fate and whereabouts. Now, with the magus having gone rogue, she is desperate to discover what he knows before he vanishes completely or is dragged off to Vienna to be destroyed. The Reverend -- [Nosferatu X] District Overseer for the Web. New Haven (6 Ventrue, 3 Toreador, 2 Nosferatu, 1 Giovanni) Upton Rowlands -- [Ventrue VIII] Prince of Hartford and New Haven, and President of the Gemini League. In 1895, just prior to the invasion of the Triad from England, Rowlands proclaimed himself Prince of New Haven and has since held the domain in the manner expected of his clan -- with an iron fist covered in velvet. While he is also Prince of Hartford, he has always preferred his port city as his true home and it is here that he carries out nearly all business, relying upon his Seneschal in the capital to oversee his interests there. Rowlands has a deep love for New Haven and maintains and continues to build a strong influence in civic government and in the area's major institutions (Yale) and financial ventures. He appreciates the arts and is on very good terms with the city's Toreador, but harbors a deep hatred for the Nosferatu, whom he believes are part of the mysterious Warwick's Web that has caused him so many troubles and nearembarassments over the years. While he recognizes the clan's place in his domain as members of the Camarilla, he keeps a very close leash on them, always a source of griping from the subterranean clan. Rowlands also despises clan Giovanni's local representative and continues to seek damning proof of the necromancer's role in many of the Ventrue's troubles despite growing evidence that the Venetians may not have been involved. For now he lets his hatred be known, hoping that his moves to hinder Giovanni interests will simply cause the clan to pull out, something which he is sure, however, will never happen. He would ask the Tremere to aid him, but he is already too damn indebted to Reiss and his magi for aid in the past concerning similar threats. As a last hope, he has opened channels with the Assamites and is considering employing one of that clan to settle the issue for him. Aunt Belle -- [Nosferatu VIII] Connecticut Strandmaster. New London (2 Malkavians, 2 Brujah, 1 Nosferatu) Ann Curwen -- [Malkavian IX] Prince of New London (and Norwich) since 1909. Ann is the dauther of Joseph Curwen and Eliza Tillinghast and was Embraced in Providence in 1792 after her institutionalization for the homicidal murder of her adopted mother and guardian, Mary Peake a few years before. Ann is obsessed with finding her long-dead brother Charles, whom she steadfastly believes is still alive, despite all evidence to the contrary. Aside from this sad, delusional passion, Ann is s quickwitted and capable ruler (at least when only a few subjects are involved). She is generally amiable, though a perceived slight can snowball into extreme paranoia, resulting in sudden and merciless "justice" on her part. This is particularly evident when mention of her family is made, something she does not take kindly to, espcially should even the slightest doubt be cast upon the good names of her mortal predecessors. Even her wicked father, Joseph Curwen, is sacrosanct in her mind and worthy of only goodly praise and rememberance. Ann allows the Brujah to have free run of the domain for the most part, so long as they don't break the Traditions and they don't mess with those folk she deems "special" -- mostly children, the insane, the eccentric, etc. -- but that could mean anyone. She knows that there are Ventrue and Tremere retainers operating in local industry, but cares little for their presence so long as they don't get too greedy or rape her domain in order to line their own pockets, actions which would meet with her extreme disapproval. From her Norwich Mental Hospital haven Ann maintains open communication with other area

princes and is viewed as cooperative and harmless, though her being Malkavian, of course, is always grounds for second opinions and "watch-and-see" attitudes. Ann is a devoted member of the Kindred of Liberty resistance group and keeps in touch on a regular basis with prominent members of the underground movement. Despite what the Nosferatu did to her coterie in Providence a hundred years ago, Ann is on excellent terms with the clan member in her domain. She treats the tunnel-dweller as a friend and passes many nights in his company, apparently quite convinced of his independence from the British Nosferatu and his stated desire to remain apart from all such politicking. In truth she has always been suspicious of him, however, and is patiently awaiting the day when he tips his hand and she finds proof of his allegiance to Warwick and English comrades, a crime which she will not allow to go unpunished. The Prophet of Bank Street -- [Malkavian X] Ann's childe has no recollection of his former name and is seemingly unaware that he is a vampire, something which other area Kindred have given up trying to convince him of. The Prophet is a shabby bum who huddles in darkened doorways along the faded glory of New London's Bank Street, staring enigmatically at passers-by and occassionally muttering harmlessly to himself. He sometimes uses bits of rubbish from the dumpsters and alleys as canvases for his own idea of art, creating odd works that never seem to resolve into something recognizable, but instead captivate and mystify viewers in an unnerving manner, suggesting to many that the artist is possessed of prophetic powers, hence his name. The Prophet is actually trying desperately to find a place that he "saw" in his dreams and is hoping that one day someone will recognize it in his bizarre art and guide back there, for he believes that he once came from there. In part, he's right, for that place is a Realm within the Dreaming and should one of the fae folk see his work they might surely recognize their true homeland. Until then, the Prophet waits and waits. Nick Fagan -- [Brujah XII] A self-proclaimed iconoclast since his Embrace in 1923, Nick nevertheless has been unable to ignore the opportunities for profitable exploitation in the New London area, especially without competition from the more financially inclined clans who left the area to rot in the Post-War years. Nick still keeps his interests focused on the local music scene and the drug and alcohol trade, with a little pornography thrown in for shits and giggles. He has no desire to overthrow Ann, and on the contrary, supports her aggresively against any who might suggest her domain is wanting, knowing that the only reason he has the freedom he does is because of her generally "hands-off" attitude. The Brujah leader has his haven beneath the El-n-Gee Club in downtown New London, but has a number of safehouses throughout the county in case he finds a sudden need for alternative sleeping arrangements. Because he is the defacto ruler of the city's streets, he treats the place as his own and polices it well against transgression or intrusion, relying upon a host of ghouls and numerous other retainers from every walk of life. Prince Ann has even given Nick free hand in controlling the local police, though he is sure that she has a few trump cards up her sleeve in case he goes too far (when in fact she doesn't -- fear alone does the job quite nicely!). Gretchen Torres -- [Brujah XIII] Nick's childe, Gretchen is the pleasing result of German and Brazilian parents, her long black hair and smoldering blue eyes an instant winner with the guys, not to mention her panther-like figure. Embraced in 1961 to replace Nick's previous childe, Amy Seldon, who met her Final Death a year earlier at the hands of a nomadic Sabbat pack, Gretchen has remained his inseparable companion, lover and eyes-in-the-back-of-his-head. She accompanies him almost everywhere, partially because, despite her

strutting and tough-chick posturing, she harbors tremendous fears about the rest of the relatively unknown supernatural world and its powerful residents. She particularly fears the near-mythical Sabbat and is easily spooked by occult-type happenings, figuring the sect is somehow involved. When cornered or when she discovers that her initial fears are misplaced, she waits for no signal to exact a swift and cruel vengeance upon those who dared try and scare her. Politically, though she has no problems with Prince Ann, Gretchen is always goading Nick to proclaim himself Prince, something she feels he deserves despite his continued rejection of the idea (Gretchen is too nave about the WoD to know of what she speaks). The neonate sleeps with her sire, but is not Blood Bound by him due to his dislike for such things. (She doesn't actually even know what the Blood Bond is!) Marshall Crane -- [Nosferatu VIII] Despite Prince Ann's disguised belief that Marshall is allied with Warwick and his British kin, this Sewer Rat is indeed what he claims to be -- a free agent. His neutrality is respected by his fellow clansmen, most of whom have become agents for Warwick's Web, though regular entreaties for his reconsideration are still made and politely refused. Embraced in 1746 by a Nosferatu whose travel arrangements caused him to remain in town over-long before departing for his final destination, Marshall has since made this area's underground his own, staking out his own private warrens among the honeycombed subterranean Connecticut labyrinths and setting up shop, complete with booby-traps of the most ingenious and sadistic sort. Most of this vampire's nights are spent either maintaing and patrolling his territories or watching over the mortal descendants of his own long-dead offspring (he had three daughters). He will go to any effort to protect these people from harm and has ensured that Ann and the Brujah are aware of this fact (something which the Brujah don't always keep foremost in their minds). Marshall is also a frequent guest of Ann's in Norwich and enjoys the chance for quiet and meaningful conversation immensely, though her penchant for insanity has always kept him alert. As a final note, the Nosferatu is an accomplished violinist and will at times pick up one of his five Stradivarious masterpieces and fill the black tunnels of New England with the chilling and unearthly sound of mournful strings weeping for the petty concerns of human existence that can no more be his. All this aside, however, should his haven be disturbed, a wrathful end will come to the intruder without pause or mercy. Beware. Norwalk (2 Ventrue, 2 Giovanni) Maureen Falk -- [Ventrue IX] Prince of Norwalk and Stamford. See Stamford for more details. Stamford (3 Ventrue, 4 Tremere, 1 Nosferatu, 2 Setites) Maureen Falk -- [Ventrue IX] Prince of Stamford and Norwalk. John Diamond -- [Tremere VI] Pontifex of Finance and Regent of the Stamford Chantry. The Jockey -- [Nosferatu XII] District Overseer for the Web. Waterbury (2 Ventrue, 2 Toreador, 1 Gangrel) Peter Griffen -- [Ventrue IX] Prince of Waterbury. Maine Augusta (2 Tzimisce, 1 Lasombra, 1 Brujah antitribu, 1 Malkavian antitribu) Gregor Lrincze -- [Tzimisce VI] Sabbat elder and hermit. Gregor came to the Colonies in 1691 with some revenant retainers and a few packmates to ensure that the New World was an ally of the Sabbat's. His Embracing of Minister Clay, a zealous witchhunter in Salem, protected his pack, but brought the swift attention of the Camarilla who had already laid claim to the Bay Colony. Lrincze and his companions moved north and founded their own coven in Augusta in 1695, where they have remained to this day. Over the years the Sabbat has

grown in power and the elder Tzimisce was accorded the status of a Bishop, but his reluctance to carry the battle to the enemies' door led to his never achieving leadership over the region's Sabbat vampires, an honor that the Brujah antitribu Sprenger and then Skelton claimed instead. Lrincze's pack, Fugue, have, however, remained loyal to the sect and have given its superiors no reason to harass them. Eventually, the enigmatic effects of Vicissitude began to warp Lrincze's mind to such a degree that virtual leadership of Fuge fell to his still-surviving childe, Clay. As the childe's personal power and prestige grew in the eyes of his Sabbat peers, however, the sire's fell as he withdrew completely from contact with others, holing up in his rotting mansion on the outskirts of town, his only contact being with Clay. Today the eldest of New England's Tzimisce remains sequestered by choice, his soul completely consumed by the ravages of the Discipline he spent so much time mastering, his mind now an alien puppet of his invisible master's.... Righeteous Endeaver Clay -- [Tzimisce VII] Sabbat Priscus and the Priest of Fugue. As his sire, Gregor Lrincze continued to decline mentally over the years and retreated further from his packmates and Sabbat duties, Clay took up the slack with the same zeal and fire that made him such an effective minister and witchhunter. He lead the pack Fugue on numerous War Parties and was responsible for allying with Skelton's Rangers and joining the Crimson Tide in response to the British Invasion of 1895. By the early 1900's Clay had become the de facto priest and leader of Fugue, though he still carried out many duties in Lrincze's name, primarily out of respect and awe for his sire's strange abilities. His facility with Sabbat ritae and his talent for firing up his listeners with sermons of Gehenna and the wrath of the Antediluvians caused his fame to grow among the sect's New England members, and even beyond. In 1934 he was formally welcomed into the sect's Inner Circle by clandestine invitation, where he was accorded the status of Priscus, a title he carries to this day. Though frequently visiting the region's other Sabbat and aiding them in their ceremonial duties, he is otherwise at his mansion, keeping a protective and inspired eye on his sire. Clay's number one concern these days is the identity and purpose of the mysterious Cardinal who has been such an influence on Archbishop Skelton. Other Prisci have been unable to provide him with any clues and those Cardinals that would be most suspect, those given the responsibility of overseeing North America, are not talking. In addition to this worry of his, Clay is also hoping to put an end to the Boston Nosferatu, Prudence Stone, who in her mortal life had been sentenced to death by Clay, her unlife now being a slap in his face. THE LONG ISLAND PROTECTORATE Sept: Sept of the Green Caern: Central Park, Manhatten, New York City Level: 3 Gauntlet: 3 Type: Fellowship and Survival Totems: Water-spirit Mera and the Great White Mouse Tribal Structure: Open, dominated by Bone Gnawers Other Important Tribes: Glass Walkers, Fianna See Werewolf: the Apocolypse for complete details. THE LONG RIVER PROTECTORATE Sept: Sept of Cold Sorrows Caern: Lake Webster, Massachusetts Level: 4 Gauntlet: 2 Type: Enigmas Totems: Dream-spirit Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg Tribal Structure: Open, dominated by Uktena Other Important Tribes: Fianna, Bone Gnawers, Glass Walkers The Long River Protectorate's western border is east of and parallel to the Connecticut River, while it is demarked to the north by the White Mountains and northeast by the Merrimack River; the coastline provides the remaining border. The region is one of deep forest and rugged hills, with mountainous reaches in the north. Water is plentiful, with rivers and lakes saturating the area, and a temperate, though finicky, clime is the norm. Though human population is scattered and relatively low, the cities of Boston, Providence, Hartford, New Haven and Worcester rise as monuments to the Weaver above the dark woodlands, with numerous arterial highways and roads creating a web-like swath through the otherwise largely desolate heart of New England. The territory is the responsibility of the Sept of Cold Sorrows, founded by the local Uktena. Though these Native American Garou still hold formal sept leadership, the incursions of the European tribes and their subsequent demonstrated superiority in numbers eventually forced the Uktena to open their caern and sept to these newcomers. Since this policy of openness has been instituted in the early 1800's, the Bone Gnawers, Fianna and Glass Walkers have joined the Uktena to make this sept the largest and most diverse in New England, though this cooperation of tribes has not been without its problems. The sept's caern is located at Lake Webster, Massachusetts. The caern itself is quite ancient, having been opened during the 15th century by Uktena theurges who were drawn to the lake. These Garou believed the

lake to have once been the site of a faerie holding, and named it Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg in acknowledgement of the spirit totem of the site. The Garou find that proximity to the caern seems to provide answers to mysteries otherwise undecipherable. Because of this enigmatic atmosphere, the lake and the surrounding woodland is also a draw for the occasional Gangrel vampire seeking refuge or simple solitude, away from the intrigue of their fellow undead. Bone Gnawers These scrappy Garou were the first non-Uktena invited to join the Sept of Cold Sorrows. While it seems odd that they would perhaps be the last tribe the Native Americans would invite to their caern, history paints a different picture. The Uktena recognized the growing power of the greedy Shadow Lords to the north and they needed allies fast. With the Wendigo still opposed to their presence, the Uktena elders felt that the Bone Gnawers were the tribe least likely to try to usurp control of the caern, and the most likely to want to ensure that the Shadow Lords did not control the region, oppressing them also. The Bone Gnawers' history of being subjugated and their lack of material desire also played important roles in their being asked to ally with the Uktena. Once the invitation was made, the Bone Gnawers could not refuse, ackowledging the Uktena's sovereignity in the wilds in return for the same respect of their place in the growing cities. Today the tribe is spread out across New England, various packs making their homes in the region's urban areas. While New York City is considered a Mecca of sorts, the New England Bone Gnawers maintain a pride in their respective cities and look to the Harbor Hounds pack of Boston for local leadership. Father Jack -- [Philodox] Master of the Challenge and leader of the Harbor Hounds. Roger "Shoemaker" Jones -- [Ahroun] Leader of the brutal Bay City Motherfuckers. Fianna The Fianna first came to the area in mentionable numbers in the mid1800's, fleeing the famines in Ireland and settling in Boston's North End. Seamus Finney, a homid Philodox from Meath County and master brewer of great renown became the tribe's first American Righ, or sept leader. Though without a caern of their own, the Fianna held their rites at Finney's Pub, a homey slice of Ireland nestled among the North End businesses. After troubles with the Shadow Lords, the Sept of Cold Sorrows, at the instigation of the Bone Gnawers who lived peaceably with the Fianna since their arrival, invited the Celtic Garou to join them and share in protecting the Lake Webster Caern from despoilment and the minions of the Wyrm; and also to aid them in ensuring they were not overrun by the greedy Shadow Lords in their avaricious quest for power. Though the tribe holds its moots at the caern proper with its allied tribes, Finney's has always remained the heart of the Fianna community in New England, if not the entire United States. Fellow Fianna make the pilgrimage to the cozy bar to once again feel the spirit of the Emerald Isle come alive and to reinvigorate themselves with the pride of the Fianna. With the beginning of The Troubles, Finney's has increasingly become a headquarters for America's Grandchildren of Fionn, and is an important source of financial and spiritual support to both the IRA and Sinn Fein in their fight against British domination. Today few English Garou will step foot in the bar, prefering instead the Green Lion Pub in nearby Cambridge, a bastion of pro-British sympathizers. The Fianna number around twenty, with three packs dominating the tribe: the Black Banshees, the sept's guardian pack; the Spirits of Vengeance, a pack dedicated to purging Ireland of the British; and

the Lions of Belfast, a small pro-English pack dedicated to protecting the rights of Northern Ireland. Though the Lions number only a few Garou, they nonetheless make their presence known at all times. Stephen Cray -- [Ahroun] Leader of the Fianna (Righ) and leader of the Black Banshees. Maggie MacCleary -- [Theurge] Donald Finney -- [Ahroun] Fianna Brewmaster and owner of Finney's Pub. Timothy Morrisett -- [Philodox] Leader of the Lions of Belfast. Joanna Geary -- [Galliard] Songkeeper and politically neutral peacemaker. Glass Walkers Where there is money to be made, there are Glass Walkers, and despite New England's recent economic slump, there always has been, and still is, a fortune to be made here. Early on the Glass Walkers settled in Boston, but with the rise in power of New York most of them relocated there, taking advantage of the urban caern in the center of Manhatten. Though that city's Glass Walker population puts New England's to shame, Boston and other area cities are not without their financial wolves. The tribe's most influential pack, the Beacon Hill Brahmins, number almost a dozen and a model of success for those packs operating in Providence, Hartford and small cities. While legitimate (if not brutal) business has always been the backbone of the tribe, organized crime has become a lucrative enterprise, and more than a few Glass Walkers have earned themselves underworld respect and notoriety while carving out personal turf in that black forest of vice. Another pack, the Wheel of Fortune Pack is partly responsible for the success and profits of the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut (see below for more details). Andrew Capella -- [Philodox] Keeper of the Land and leader of the Beacon Hill Brahmins. Uktena This Native American tribe was once the sole representative of Gaia's protectors in this region, skirmishing with the Wendigo of the north at times. With the coming of the European tribes the Uktena were quickly hard-pressed to maintain their primacy over the New England region, over time losing much of their land, dignity and relevence. A few short years ago a few tribal fostern teamed up with a couple Glass Walkers and formed the Wheel of Fortune Pack, an alliance bent on restoring the tribe's regional authority and respect. The pack succeeded in a way that has not only astonished Uketena and Glass Walkers across the nation, but has now threatened to bring the Wyrm into the very heart of this ancient tribe. The pack was able to establish the Foxwoods Casino complex in Ledyard, Connecticut, which in a few short years has become the largest and most profitable gambling venture in the entire Western Hemisphere! What was thought to be a success by the Glass Walker elders (earning the packmembers very high renown) was received with horror by Uktena elders, who looked upon gambling as a symptom of the Greed Wyrm in all its might. In addition, these wise leaders now contend that the venue will draw ever-lusty vampires and similar elements into the previously quiet woodlands of the area, bringing only more ruin and danger. The Uktena of the Wheel of Fortune Pack have been sorely chastised for their stupidity and were forced to sever all connections to the enterprise. The Uktena have asked the Glass Walkers to do the same, but for now the urban wolves stubbornly refuse to budge, arguing with all their might of the possible benefits they could receive, even going so far as to spend vast monies towards educating the public about the Native American peoples. This situation may be unable to resolve itself soon, and in the meantime, the casino continues to draw

untold hordes of people to its gaudy parlors to throw their money to the wind in the name of chance. Sings-of-Rain -- [Galliard] Sept Leader. Turtle Fist -- [Ahroun] Caern Warder. Elizabeth Weepingspear -- [Theurge] Master of the Rite. John Fishspeaker -- [Philodox] Caern Gatekeeper. Most of the area is dense wilderness little trampled on by the feet of man, a condition that the Red Talons would like to see continue. Here the snows are deep and the winds icy, and plenty of wild game still roam the region undisturbed by the taint of civilization. In the middle of this all, atop a stony ledge from which spills a maginifcent waterfall cascading some 200 feet before crashing into a torrid pool below, is the spiritual heart of these lands, the caern of the Screaming Winds Protectorate. THE THOUSAND ISLANDS PROTECTORATE Sept: Sept of Fallen Warriors Caern: The shores of Lac St. Francois, Qubec Level: 2 Gauntlet: 3 Type: War Totems: Wendigo Tribal Structure: Wendigo Other Important Tribes: None This Protectorate is mostly in territorial Canada, though some of it extends into parts of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. THE WHITE MOUNTAIN PROTECTORATE Sept: Sept of the Underking Caern: Large hidden cavern near Mount Washington, Maine Level: 1 Gauntlet: 4 Type: Power Totems: Hru the Stone King Tribal Structure: Shadow Lords Other Important Tribes: Black Furies The White Mountains dominate this Protectorate and lend an atmosphere of rugged, defensible splendor to the area, once which drew the Shadow Lords here in the first place shortly after their arrival in the Colonies in the late 17th century. The self-righteous tribe was

rarely forced to deal with other Garou in terms of battling for territory until they attempted to lay claim to the caern at Lake Webster in Massachusetts, long held by the Uktena. Their bid for complete power over New England fell short, however, when the Uktena allied themselves with the ragged Bone Gnawers and later Fianna, resulting in a force too powerful for the Shadow Lords to dominate into submission. They refrained from further attempts and concentrated instead on increasing the power and influence of their own stronghold in the White Mountains, turning the brunt of their energies to battling the ever-growing power of the Wyrm. Since the caern's creation the Shadow Lords have overseen their Protectorate from their mountain fortress near Mount Washington. Beneath the majestic slopes the sept's leader sits upon the Whispering Throne in the Court of Echoes, an eerie subterranean cave complex known for its strange aural effects. Nearby is the well-guarded heart of the caern itself, the Cathedral, an amazing cavern of breathtaking beauty that literally "sings" in resonance with the howls of the Garou during their moots here. It is here that the spirit of the caern's Totem, Hru the Stone King, is said to reside, and it is his voice which is said to accompany the Shadow Lords during their howls. Hru provides the sept his knowledge of the mountains and aids them greatly in ridding the Protectorate of the Wyrm's foul taint. In the early 1900's the Black Furies were invited to join, though their presence has always been a thorny issue for both themselves and their Shadow Lord cousins. For the most part, though, the Black Furies live near the southeastern border of the Protectorate and only visit the caern during important moots or for pressing business, preferring to carry on their own traditions apart from the Shadow Lords. The more senior tribe, on the other hand, is spread out over the mountain range, though they frequently attend court and patrol their lands regularly and with zeal, never hesitating should an infestation of the Wyrm be found. Despite their vigilance, however, the Wyrm has long had its black claws in these mountains and the Garou have yet to purge their home of all its darkness, not to mention the one that has found a home in the Shadow Lords' hearts since the arrival of the Black Furies. Black Furies In the early 1900's a pack of Black Furies entered the White Mountains on the trail of a fomor that had slain one of their own in New York state. Their presence was challenged by the Shadow Lords and they were given three nights to leave the Protectorate or else be slain for the shrewish impudence. The Furies stood their ground and continued their hunt for the fomor and on the third night found him and an entire village of his corrupted relatives in a forgotten vale. With their namesake fury they let Gaia's rage lead them into furious battle against the fomori and soon reduced the horde of Wyrm-spawn to bloody meat, impaling the heads of the losers on spears of pine for all future allies of the Wyrm to see. Leaving the site, however, they were set upon in their wounded state by a pack of Shadow Lords who had been trailing them, and, too exhausted to demonstrate their true mettle, were captured and taken back to the Court of Echoes for trial and punishment. As part of their defiant defense they pointed to their recent victory over their eternal foe, a declaration which was only scorned and derided by their captors as unreal and laughable. When two Silent Striders suddenly showed up during the trial and spoke of the ghastly scene that they had just witnessed at the old fomori village, the Shadow Lords were taken aback and sent emissaries to visit the place to act as official witnesses. Upon their return they spoke of the truth they had seen and the Black Furies were found innocent of trespass and actually honored by the Shadow Lords instead. Finally, the pack of female

heroes were invited to join the sept and aid the Shadow Lords in cleansing their Protectorate, though many Shadow Lords felt this invitation was offered only because it was sure to be turned down. To their surprise the Black Furies accepted and were soon made official members of the Sept of the Underking. Today the Black Furies remain valiant defenders of Gaia, frequently showing-up their Shadow Lord cousins. The Shadow Lords have since regretted the offer of alliance and not-so-secretly hope that one day the Furies will meet a foe that will prove too much for them, putting them in their rightful places (i.e. the grave). Until that day, however, the Shadow Lords are forced to recognize the women warriors as equals. The Shadow Lords still control the caern and sept functions, however, and rarely allow the Black Furies to push an agenda which they themselves do not agree with whole-heartedly. Shadow Lords Among all the Garou in New England, the Shadow Lords see themselves as the only Garou worthy of leading the battle against the Wyrm, looking down on the other tribes as inferior and even unworthy of existence. For the most part they ignore the Silver Fangs of the North Country Protectorate, scorning their foolish idealism and madness, looking only to themselves for direction. This attitude does not mean they are staunch foes of the other tribes, but aside from the warnings of the Silent Striders and the assistance of the Black Furies, they see little reason to work with or heed the advice of the others except in the direst emergencies. The Shadow Lords know the White Mountains like few others and spend much of their time patrolling the range. They have a great deal of control -- both direct and indirect -- over the park rangers and sheriffs, allowing them to extend their power greatly and to keep the bawn clear of intruders. Unfortunately, despite their watchful eye the Wyrm has long festered in these misty mountains and even today claims entire backwoods hamlets and extended families as its own, something which these Garou paladins are only partially aware of. Fearsome Wyrm-spawn crawl among the shadowy peaks and gloomy pines every night and move ever closer to the caern itself, hoping one day to overrun it and claim it for the Wyrm. The last such attempt, however, was put down by the Shadow Lords, who sent the few surviving Black Spiral Dancers howling in pain into their deepest hidey-holes to cower in fear of Gaia's chosen protectors. Today, as far as the Shadow Lords know, these twisted former Garou no longer dare step foot in the White Mountains, but take their blasphemous activities elsewhere. At present the tribe numbers nearly twenty members. (through its Hartford Worldwide Insurance Corporation subsidiary) in the hopes of establishing a major "tainting facility" near the Boston Metro Area. A handful of Black Spiral Dancers from a Kentucky mining operation were brought as watchdogs during the initial renovations, but when the site proved unusable due to the serious degree of

degradation and increasingly nosy environmentalists and PENTEX cancelled its plans, the pack of werewolves stayed behind, hired by the megacorporation to act as mercenary agents in the area as needed. In 1972 the pack had grown large enough for a successful Rite of Caern Creation to be performed at the site of one of the oldest and most polluted foundries, resulting in the Rusted Anvil Pit. Today the vast properties of the former GMM Company is known by locals as the Steeples, a blackened and dead wasteland of collapsing factories and rusting metalworks, rumored to be haunted and the site of all manner of horrors. Unfortunately, these rumors ring too close to the truth. (See the Chronology for more details.) Today it is dormant, though still powerful. Mystickal channels reaching through the Astral Plane and into the Labyrinth of Kish siphon off a portion of the Node's power to assist in sustaining that Qlippothic Realm. With recent events at the caern, the likelihood of it being retaken and reopened by Black Spiral Dancers remains high. It only served as such for fifty-odd years before it was shut down due to a sudden riot that resulted in the savage mutilation and deaths of all thirty-two prisoners and their six jailers. The authorities sealed the place permanently after a child became trapped in the dank dungeons and upon rescue was found to have completely lost his wits, remaining incoherent for months before taking the life of his mother, his sister and then himself. The above-ground stone structure was secured with iron and mortar and the place was left to brood on its own, the property around it never further developed or disturbed as dictated by old law.

In the late 1700's the Fugue, a Sabbat founded coven led by the Tzimisce Bishop Gregor Lrincze reopened the institution to utilize as an alternate temple should their usual one be discovered or disturbed. The Bishop himself began to make use of the old prison's dungeons as his own personal laboratory in which he carried out many a frightening experiment upon kidnapped victims and packmates alike. Terrible ghouls and unnamable horrors began to fill the ancient cells, some surviving, some not. All in all, Lrincze was satisfied with his progress. In 1865 three Black Spiral Dancers arrived in Augusta, all former members of Squallor's Kith, the now infamous pack from New Hampshire. The three were led by a shrieking Bane to the old prison where they descended into the depths to seek what it was that the Wyrm spirit wished them to find. Upon discovering the monstrosities imprisoned there and feeling the wrath of long forgotten ghosts, the three declared that this place would be their now home and temple to the Wyrm and that they would open a powerful caern upon the site. That evening, however, the Sabbat arrived, alerted to the presence of the Lupines by ritual wards. A ferocious battle ensued, during which half the vampires were destroyed, but suddenly the combatants ceased their fight when they realized that their hate for each other had spontaneously awakened a powerful nexus that began to pulse with a dark reflection of their rage. The vampires were awed by the display and the Tzimisce swore on the spot to aid the bestial Dancers to cultivate the power they had aroused. The oath was agreed to and the Dancers consecrated their new Pit and took the name the Hive of the Berserker. Today the Sabbat only use the place as an emergency haven, the Black Spiral Dancers its regular inhabitants. Many of Lrincze's "experiments" still lurk in their cells and provide entertainment and potential protection for the Hive. In addition, the now more numerous Hive has discovered passageways beneath the dungeons that lead into far more ancient tunnels beneath the Maine soil. The Witches of New England The Mystick Traditions and Crafts Order of the Black triangle Arcane Houses: Orne House, Arkham, Massachusetts (5) Coventry House, Salem, Massachusetts (6) Horizon Realm: Labyrinth of Kish Nodes: Nightmare Rock, Australian Outback (5) The Alter of Sodom, Mesopotamia (3) Greymere Glen, Dudleytown, Connecticut (4) Womb of the Black Goat, Silverbrook, Vermont (3) The Black Triangle was founded in 1721 by the Nephandus Widderslainte known contemporaneously as Jeremiah Orne, who is in fact merely a reincarnation of the Black Pharaoh, Nephren-Ka. Two years prior Orne had returned to Arkham pretending to be the grandson of his own previous identity, Simon Orne, a civic leader and the secret high witch of the Lidless Eye Coven, now long disbanded, while simultaneously maintaining the identity of Dr. Jason Orne in Providence, Rhode Island. Back in Arkham Orne befriends Francis Derby, a wealthy sea captain and a recently Awakened mage, and George Locksley, the son of Hesper Payne, a former member of Orne's own Lidless Eye Coven hanged for witchcraft. Orne found it a simple task to lure his companions to the path of the Nephandi and the three penned a black covenent, swearing their allegiance to each other and calling themselves and taking the name the Black Triangle. Orne's own home, a stone structure built over the maw of an endless tunnel system predating humankind, became their sanctum in which the trio began to

pursue their goal of rediscovering the Black Pharaoh's ancient otherworldly realm, the Labyrinth of Kish. Orne also began writing his personal journal at this time, The Book of the Overseer of the Years, which included not only details of his present work and discoveries along with a host of demonic True Names for use in horrid rituals, but dim rememberances from his former incarnation as NephrenKa. After six years of exhaustive effort the ahriman of three finally succeed in breaking through the Gauntlet, the first necessary step to finding the lost Labyrinth and its treasures, an achievement aided in large part with the aid of the summoned spectre of Egypt's Sixth Dynasty Queen, Nitorcris, herself once a visitor to the Labyrinth. The event, however, clearly demonstrated just how much quintessential power the three lacked, and so they intensified their efforts to locate and acquire a usable Node to supplement the one at Graymere Glen in Southeastern Connecticut which they already had limited access to. In 1758 Orne's second home in Providence was raided by rival mages from the legendary Doissetep, an event which, although resulting in the loss of some of Orne's important artifacts (including his personal journal!), allowed the Widderslainte to spend much more time in Arkham with his companions concentrating on esoteric matters to the exclusion of the more mundane. To throw pursuers off his trail, Orne pretends to have fled to Philadelphia, a ruse that seems to have worked for some time, and to retrieve his lost properties he assigned another ally, Joseph Curwen, a local thaumaturgist, to watch his old home and do what he could to regain the items. By 1764, however, Orne's deception was pierced and agents of Doissetep made their zealous way to Arkham to root out and destroy the Nephandi. Orne was not without warning though, and arranged for his own "death" at sea from pneumonia prior to the mages' arrival. The wizards were thorough in their investigation in town despite the news of their quarry's death, but did not find the traitorous mages they sought, Orne and his companions having sought refuge in the Umbra until the coast was clear. In 1768 the ahriman's ranks were winnowed down to two when George Locksley, the least capable of the three, found himself unwilling victom of a ritual gone wrong, one intended to summon the demon-god Nyarlothotep to this plane -- an unprecedented victory had it worked as planned. The ritual was incorrect, however, and something less amenable to deal-making than Nyarlothotep might have been was summoned instead. This alien demon brought its otherworldly appetite with it and wasting no time set upon the terrified sorceror, feasting on his soul and reducing his flesh into a horrific travesty of shambling muscle and festering tissues. Orne, not one to let such an occurance go unexploited, felt no mercy as he magickally shackled the remains of his former companion to his sanctum, turning Locksley into little more than a monstrous guard dog. Derby was quite shaken by the incident, but upon realization that he would no longer have to share any spoils with his former friend, let it be and turned ever more towards the darkness of the demons he and Orne had truck with. Despite a series of failed attempts to regain his lost journal and other mystickal esoterica in his former Providence home, Orne succeeded in finally obtaining a regular source of Quintessence for the Black Triangle in 1813. By aiding a group of Black Spiral Dancers in Silverbrook, Vermont in opening a foul caern, the Nephandus wrought for himself a promise of regular access to the nexus' power -- signed in blood, of course -- which he quickly channeled to his Arkham chantry. At the time Derby also underwent the Nephandi Rebirth for the first time, accepting the true mantle of his office and becoming truly as damned as his companion.

In 1831 the Black Triangle suddenly found itself a new member, the Tremere magus Madelaine Coventry, a previous ally (and secret Blood Regnant) of Orne's. Fleeing a Sabbat assault upon her chantry in Salem, she and her ghoul sorceror Joseph Curwen joined the Nephandi in Arkham. In return for his demonstrated loyalty to Coventry and perhaps to appease Derby's and Locksley's mistrust, Curwen underwent the Rebirth at Silverbrook, an event which Awakened his Avatar to its true nephandic nature. Now five strong, the ahriman make much better progress in their continuing quest to find their way to the Labyrinth of Kish. Finally, in 1855 the group was able to celebrate its success, a permanent portal to the sable maze beyond the Gauntlet being established in the tunnels beneath the chantry house. With unmeasurable excitement Orne entered his ancient home and began searching its byzantine chambers and tunnels for the grail he had so long sought, the Shining Trapezohedron, unaware that it no longer rested in the dark realm, but had been taken by another some time before. For the next fifty-odd years Orne rarely visited this world, spending nearly all his time in the Labyrinth, searching for his lost treasure and carrying out magicks that this world would not stand for. And so in 1888 when the Miskatonic River swelled to historic heights and flooded much of the region including the tunnels beneath Orne's house, the Nephandus and leader of the Black Triangle was trapped in the Labyrinth, the portal to this world sealed off by fathoms of icy water that even Derby and Coventry could not bypass, despite the following years spent trying. During the Roaring Twenties the Black Triangle a telling defeat when fanatical and well-armed Inquisitors of the Society of Leopold raided Arkham in the hopes of finding and destroying the black cabal in God's name. The Nephandi and their Tremere ally decided that it would be safer to flee before the Inquisitors found them than face their wrath and likely exposure to other enemies they had waiting for them. With the tunnels beneath the Orne House still flooded the group departed in 1927 and set up shop back in Salem at Coventry's long-abandoned chantry, secure in the knowledge that if they couldn't open the portal to the Labyrinth then their enemies could not either. Over the next few years the group attempted to reestablish itself in sleepy Salem, but found that Coventry's former herd, now the Order of the Golden Dawn, a serious impediment, its Verbena High Priestess, Kathryn Van Dorn, wary of the influence of vampires and Nephandi and more than a little protective of the Golden Dawn. Coventry sent Curwen in to attempt to seize control of the sect from within, but was eventually forced to have Van Dorn killed when in Germany, courtesy of some Gargoyle allies there. For the next few years the Golden Dawn was rocked with internal strife and outright conflict, all of which came to a head in 1936 when Curwen seized the group's prize possession, the r Codex, and used its powers to destroy some of the witches opposing his coup. A handful of witches were forced to flee while the remaining members threw in with Curwen, becoming ghouls and prospective talent for both Coventry and the Black Triangle. With this group now under its control, the Nephandi were able to spend its energies on its more long-term goals, including how to bring Orne back from the Umbra. Today the Order of the Black Triangle is firmly entrenched in Salem and responds mercilessly and without hesitation to any real or perceived threat to their presence or influence there. Curwen spends most of his time with the Order of the Golden Dawn, though regularly attends important rituals with his peers and uses Coventry House as a personal retreat and sanctuary when such is needed. Coventry has succeeded in Blood Bonding the entire ahriman to her will, though she relies on that mystick leash only when absolutely necessary, preferring to keep her actual control a secret as long as possible out

of fear that her thralls may discover a way to counter it if given the opportunity. She is served hand and foot by her newest childe, a former member of the Golden Dawn, Thomas Godwyn and in 1985 seduced a magus of the Hartford Chantry, Zachariah Slane, to join her as an initiate in the Order of the Wyrm, promising him that one day he would have his heart's desire, the regency of a rebuilt Boston Chantry and the princedom of that influential city. Francis Derby spends most of his time in study and travel, seeking to unravel the secrets that his former mentor and friend Orne seemed to have been born with knowledge of. He oversees the cult's contact and relations with New England's other witch covens, sometimes even going so far as to form temporary alliances in order to combat particular incursions or threats by other supernatural agencies in the region. He is not, however, a weak link in the chain, but remains ever vigilant and capable of the true depravity and evil that only a Nephandus can claim as his own. And one day, the group hopes that Orne will return, opening the Labyrinth to all of them and discovering a means to break great Nyarlothotep from his celestial prison beyond the stars. Lastly, with the Labyrinth unreachable, the only Node available to the group is Greymere Glen, which means that regular excursions must be made in person to collect the Tass that accumulates there. This assignment is usually carried out by Curwen and a Custos of the Black Triangle (there are a few), who must tread carefully at that site so as not to anger the fae that make that place their home. Jeremiah Orne -- [Nephandus Widderslainte] Gilledian and current incarnation of Nephren-Ka, the Black Pharaoh. Today Orne remains trapped beyond the Gauntlet in the Labyrinth of Kish. Whether he is attempting to return to this world or has turned his energies towards more esoteric concerns (which is very likely) is unknown. Were he to come back, however, it is a sure bet that his power would be far greater than it had been upon his disappearance over one-hundred years ago and that he would use his newfound abilities to only make life on this planet as hellish as possible in service to his infernal masters. It's possible that the Blood Bond he had to Coventry has dissipated, though there is no assurance of this, something Coventry has not forgotten should the Nephandus return. Francis Derby -- [Nephandus Master] Prelatus and Gilledian in absentia. As the leader-in-name of the Black Triangle, this black mage spends most of his time working to maintain and manipulate relations with other supernatural agencies, much of his time being spent away from the chantry proper for such purposes. It is Derby who speaks for the cabal and it is he who must be answered to should another member stray from his or her allegiance (though with Coventry this is moot, considering the Blood Bonds she holds over her pet mages). Of all the members of the Black Triangle Derby is also the most public and the most diplomatic, his ability to use charisma and subterfuge far exceeding that of his companions. Though he continues to follow Orne's example and emulates the Widderslainte's magicks, Derby is desperate for his mentor's return, dreaming that upon that day he will be allowed to move beyond this world as Orne has and claim his dark inheritence. Madelaine Coventry -- [Tremere VI] Rogue Regent of Salem and Abbess of the Order of the Wyrm. Coventry is the actual controlling hand behind the Black Triangle, a fact which is not altogether hidden. She has bound Orne, Curwen and Derby to her service via the Blood Bond, though she saves calling upon this until the day when it becomes absolutely necessary. For the most part she allows Derby to run the show, but like him is very anxious to reopen Orne House and the portal to the Labyrinth of Kish, where she feels she will find the true power she seeks and the answers to the secrets of immortality and the

purpose for her existence. See Kindred of New England for more information. Joseph Curwen -- [Nephandus Master] Shaytan and High Warlock of the Order of the Golden Dawn. Curwen's life has been one of hellish curiosity and infernal service, his warped Avatar slave to the promise of power regardless of the sacrifice. Where Derby is publicly amiable and social Curwen is callous and uncaring, a selfish wizard who cares less than nothing for human -- or any other -- life. He is not an autocrat, however, but remains happy being the number two or three person, so long as his share of eternity comes his way. As leader of the Golden Dawn he puts on a good face, but even then his inhuman side burns through, scorching those who cross him. Since his Rebirth he has dedicated himself to magickal might and desires one day to be master of all the Qilloppothic Spheres -- at any cost. Cloven Hoof Coven Arcane Houses: Crimson Hart Lodge, Manchester, New Hampshire (3) Horizon Realm: None Nodes: The Bower, Manchester, New Hampshire (3) Despite its official founding in 1936, the Cloven Hoof Coven traces its true origins back to Acolytes of Samuel Bridgewater and the 1843 arrival in Salem of Kathryn Van Dorn, the now legendary Verbena witch of Newfoundland. (See the Order of the Golden Dawn below for more information.) Those Verbena coven members who fled Salem after the schism of 1936 found refuge in a place of power that Van Dorn had called the Bower, a forest Node of ancient heritage located outside of Manchester, New Hampshire. There they took the new name of the Clove Hoof, dedicating themselves to one day regaining the Codex from the now-hated Order of the Golden Dawn and destroying that sect's vampiric master. For the past sixty years the coven has rebuilt itself, albeit with some care so as to not draw Curwen's or Coventry's attention before it was strong enough to defend itself. Today the coven has achieved that strength and is able to defend itself admirably. Though many of its members are mere Consors, a number of powerful Verbena now make up the coven's leadership, mages who have already made their presence known throughout New England. The sect possesses vast financial assets and is a prime player in regional affairs, constantly thwarting the plans of the Golden Dawn and those vampires they run across. In addition, the mages have paid special attention to the constitution of the undead and have gone out of their way at times to acquire "test subjects" for their magickal experimentation. This attitude has resulted in the local Brujah Prince and her brood steering well clear of the witches as much as possible, though they have at times used the witches to their advantage, leaving anonymous tips that have led the coven to the havens of at least two Sabbat intruders in the past. For the most part, however, Pendragon has warned his flock about the Cloven Hoof and has threatened potential instigators with severe punishment, even by Cainite standards. Of current importance to the coven is the 1994 loss of Ahkempotet's Scroll, as well as the death of the witch who first procured the document for the witches, Klaus Van Dorn, the uninspired son of the group's spiritual founder and martyr, Kathryn Van Dorn. It seems that the younger Van Dorn was blackmailed or forced to steal the scroll back from his own coven, perhaps by the very individual from whom he first procured it. In any case, the witch was found dead in his own home and the scroll gone. Since then the High Warlock, the aging Phillip Carter, has determined that Van Dorn was slain by a vampire and has now bent his energies to find out if Coventry is somehow involved or directly responsible. Whether she is or not is irrelevant: the Cloven Hoof Coven has the power it has always wanted

to begin making its move against the vampire warlock bitch and her sorcerous allies.... Phillip Carter -- [Verbena Master] High Warlock. DOISSETEP Arcane Houses: Delono House, Boston, Massachusetts (5) Horizon Realm: The Shade Realm of Forces Nodes: ______________________ This most legendary of all chantries maintains an earthly aspect in the Back Bay section of Boston, Delono House. Here the Order of the Vantikor, specially trained Custos shock troops and chantry defenders, maintains its headquarters, using this location for both recruitment and organization. Mages of Doissetep also use the house as a hostel for their trips back and forth between this world and the Horizon Realm, rooms for just such purposes always being scrupulously maintained. The Vantikor are also overseen by the Ambassador to the Vantikor, a mage appointed to the position for a period of time to ensure that they uphold their tasks and are not corrupted or coerced by outside forces. Currently a small "committee" of mages have been temporarily based here while in the process of recruiting new mages into Doissetep. Virgil Endrina, Master mage and expert swordsman heads up this group for the time being and with his comrades has been hosting some negotiations with the Order of the Silent Threnody in New Haven in the hopes of bringing them "into the fold." An invitation is likely soon, but even so, formal acceptance and eventual permission to visit Doissetep itself could be years away given that chantry's worry of nephandic and technocratic infiltration. In general, outside mages may visit Delono House for whatever purpose, but the portal to the Horizon Realm is very well guarded and strictly off limits. See the Book of Chantries for additional information on Doissetep, its mages and the Vantikor. Order of the Golden Dawn Arcane Houses: Lodge of the Sinking Sun, Salem, Massachusetts (4) Horizon Realm: None Nodes: None Perhaps the most influential and well-known of all the witch covens in New England is the Order of the Golden Dawn, in no small part due to the group's adoption of the Golden Dawn moniker, already a venerable tradition in European occultism. The name is somewhat of a misnomer, however, for unlike the Continental society with which the auspicious title originated, this group's activities and interests have veered far afield from its namesake, its own history thoroughly influenced by dark forces and leaders with very personal ambitions that have little to do with mere philosophical titillation or communal influence. The New England Order's beginnings can be traced back to a vampire, the Tremere magus Madelaine Coventry, who in 1639 set her two ghoul acolytes, both of whom accompanied her from England, the task of ensuring her a steady blood supply that would not alert the Biblebeating authorities of the Massachusetts Bay Colony to her presence among them. Geoffrey Thorne and Nathaniel Grey, with their mistress' approval, began to secretly gather a small herd of occult-minded individuals, a group that became known simply as the Apostles of Thorne and Grey. This coven proved to be not only a suitable herd in Coventry's eyes, but a potential pool for future progeny also, as demonstrated by their devotion to and quick acclimation to the thaumaturgical principles taught them by the two ghouls. Within five years the Apostles had grown in number to thirteen, the proper enumeration necessary for certain more complicated rituals to be performed. The coven/herd was a qualified success. Thorne and Grey, along with their Apostles, may have continued as mere pseudo-magi whose primary purpose was sating the unending appetite of

Madelaine Coventry had it not been for the two men learning in 1644 of the existence of a forbidden grimoire of ancient and esoteric knowledge known in underground occult circles as the r Codex. It came to their attention that a complete and accurate copy of the book was in the possession of a small-time witch coven in Arkham called the Lidless Eye. Employing the services of a very capable Irish thief, the two sorcerors soon had the tome in their possession, presenting it to Coventry in the hopes that they might be rewarded with the Embrace themselves and thereby become true immortal magi. Coventry's translation of the Greek text and subsequent authentication and study of the book proved a turning point for her as she began to see truths, however horrid, in the whispering pages that had previously only been guessed at. Warnings of the return to this plane of alien entities or "wyrms" of god-like power captured not only her imagination, but her very soul, and she found herself sympathetic to the author, a member of an ancient sect of magi known as the Order of the Wyrm, who proposed that the only way to avoid eventual enslavement and destruction at the hands (sic) of these beings was to begin serving them now. From this point on Coventry secretly wore the mantle of that dark Order herself. With her conversion, the Apostles found themselves delving into mysteries much darker than any had previously guessed, though unaware the entire time of how they were still being used as sustainence by their invisible Tremere master. The cult's rituals began to explore the possibilities of otherwordly entities and Thorne and Grey themselves succeeded in learning a good bit of the dark thaumaturgy which Coventry had gleaned from the Codex. Contact with "wyrms" and insight into worlds beyond our own became routine for the two ghouls, earning them in 1650 a promise from Coventry that upon All Hallow's Eve they would finally receive the Embrace they longed for. But such was not to be. The authorities were tipped off about the unholy practices of Thorne and Grey by the minions of some Brujah who hoped to weaken Coventry, allowing them to claim the Bay Colony as their own. Coventry's two ghouls were seized and quickly tried and hanged while she herself was out of town on business. With the deaths of their leaders, the remaining eleven cabalists could already feel the hangman's noose and so fled the settlement with their treasure, the Codex, among the few items they took with them. The group hoped that in Salem they might find a greater measure of safety and so installed themselves there, swearing to carry on the work of Thorne and Grey despite all adversity. In 1666 the cult experienced an epiphany of sorts with the arrival of Samuel Bridgewater, a sorceror of obvious power who claimed to be the living repository of the souls of Thorne and Grey. Bridgewater, an ancient Nephandus known by many past names had actually been the previous owner of the r Codex and had traced its disappearance to the coven after many years of work. Coventry confronted the dark mage before he could snatch his tome back and exact retribution, however, and finding much in common, the two decided to ally, Coventry still using the coven as her private herd and Bridgewater using them as his personal servants. The Nephandus began to call the witches his Acolytes and began to groom them as saw fit, teaching them more of the dark secrets he had learned himself over the ages. But not every member of the coven was so easily taken in by Bridgewater's claims about Thorne and Grey. One of the witches, Persephone Cullen, began to suspect Bridgewater's ties to some unseen master, and after some careful observance, finally concluded that the members' regular blood tithes, ostensibly used for dark magicks, were in fact being used to feed a powerful vampire. Bridgewater, therefore, was a liar and fiend and both he and his master deserved death. Cullen was able to convince four trusted friends among the coven of her convictions and

together they confronted Bridgewater and refused to allow any further blood tithes, accusing him of conspiring against them with a vampire. Unfortunately for the accusers they drastically underestimated Bridgewater's personal power and were forced to cut short their attempted coup and run for their lives, departing Salem for the southern woods of Connecticut where they formed their own new coven, the Twisted Horn. For the next forty-four years Bridgewater faced no further serious threats from within the ranks of the Acolytes, but outside pressure continued to grow as the Twisted Horn Coven began to worm their own way back into a position of influence within colonial society, whispers began to circulate about Bridgewater's unnatural youth and a the servants of the Inquisition increased their investigations into his doings. Finally, in 1710 the High Warlock bid a silent adeau to his coven by staging his own death. By this time he had far surpassed the knowledge contained within the Codex and so left it behind with Coventry upon slipping quietly back to his former home in Arkham. With his departure the Acolytes begin to experience a long, slow decline in power, caused primarily by the coven's own complacency, its members firmly of the belief that none could successfully challenge their power, least of all the upstart Twisted Horn traitors. Coventry herself relied less and less on the pitiful cult as the general population grew exponentially and in 1831, when advance word of a Sabbat assault upon her own Tremere chantry reaches her ears, she thinks little of abandoning the Acolytes for the safety offered by allies of hers in Arkham. Coventry, however, was one of the only things ensuring that the coven was protected from outsiders, however, and with her departure the coven nearly fell apart, its members squabbling among themselves and its assets begin pirated by rival societies and interests in the region. The only thing to stop the complete and expected break-up of the coven was the arrival in 1843 of Kathryn Van Dorn, a Verbena priestess from Newfoundland. The Acolytes found her irresistable, her demonstrations of True Magick irrefutable evidence of her access to secret knowledge. She herself found a few of the miserable pseudo-magicians to have potential, however, and accepted the group as her own to teach and to mold as she saw fit. And so was born the Order of the Golden Dawn. She locked away the Codex of Thorne and Grey, recognizing it as a work of evil better kept from foolish hearts and she worked hard to turn the Order into a cabal of not only prestige, but of purpose. For almost a hundred years the long-lived High Priestess oversaw the growth the Golden Dawn unchallenged, but by 1931 this all changed when Madelaine Coventry sought to regain control of the descendants of her former herd. Van Dorn and her disciples staved off the attempt, seeing the vampiric maneuvers for what they were, the Verbena being well-versed in the ways of stopping such depredations. But Coventry would not be so easily thwarted and so in 1934 she sent her most recent pet mage, Joseph Curwen, to infiltrate the group and deliver it to her without delay. A viscious power struggle soon followed, its flashpoint being the slaying of Van Dorn by Gargoyles in Germany, foul allies of Coventry's. Van Dorn's Verbena acoloytes, led by the charismatic Phillip Carter, immediately attempted to grab the reigns of the Order, hoping to keep its assets, both financial and magickal, out of the hands of those who sided with Curwen and his vampire master. By 1936, however, the outcome of the conflict was settled once and for all when Curwen discovered the hiding place of the Codex and used its dark knowledge to destroy some of the Verbena. Cutting their losses, the Verbena fled Salem, retreating to Manchester, New Hampshire where they took the new name the Cloven Hoof Coven. Since that time the Order of the Golden Dawn has maintained its power due in large part to the power of its High Warlock, Josheph Curwen,

and his unseen allies. Today the Order is the strongest of the witch covens in New England, its financial and political influence rivalling that of even the vampire princes of the region. Its members have all been made ghouls through the sharing of an unholy chalice during the more important ceremonies, a chalice laced with Coventry's blood. In addition to this source of power, a handful of the witches have Awakened and have become true Nephandi, serving Curwen with zeal and loyalty in the hopes that each will achieve greatness in some world "beyond" one day. None, however, are aware of Curwen's actual connection to Coventry or his nephandic peers, believing that their High Warlock is the final word and none stands above him aside from the hellish entities which most of their rituals are dedicated to. In essence, the Order of the Golden Dawn is a pool of potential recruits for Coventry as well as the Nephandi of the Black Triangle, though the group no longer actually serves as a supply of blood for Coventry, her reliance upon any one group being too obvious a weakness for a Cainite of her power. Joseph Curwen -- [Nephandus Master] High Warlock. See the Black Triangle for more on this fiendish Nephandus. House of Usher Arcane Houses: The former strip club Heaven's Gate, Boston, Massachusetts (1) Horizon Realm: None Nodes: None The House of Usher is comprised of three Hollow Ones who have banded together both for protection as much as companionship, seeing themselves as "outside" normal society because of their uncanny powers. The three know nothing of an organized society of mages and believe that the occasional technomancer that they have had the misfortune to run into was simply a "wild talent" like they believe themselves to be, albeit clearly opposed to their own existence (they believe this is due to haughty arrogance and elitism and not a true underlying philosophical difference). Their ignorance is not two-way, however, and both Delono House and a few agents of the Technocratic Union are cognizant of this cabal's presence, though for now they tolerate it, having more pressing concerns than a few club-hopping, cantrip-casting nobodies. Aside from the purely magickal community, these anarch mages are aware that there is more to the World of Darkness than meets the eye, but at present know little more than that at the darkest hours the streets are home to more than just spellcasters. While they would be interested to learn more, they are in no hurry to get themselves killed poking their noses around where they aren't wanted. For now they prefer to spend their evenings on private concerns. Tara -- [Hollow One] Still looking younger than her 30+ years, Tara was once a stripper at the very club which now serves as her cabal's chantry, the condemned Heaven's Gate in Boston's Combat Zone. She got into the biz when only twelve, her body and charms maturing far faster than had been expected and her parents having been another story of woe and pathetic urban failure. A nocturnal lifestyle of pornography, drugs and eventually a catastrophic rape eventually Awakened the something inside of Tara that had long been sleeping, and along with the horrible pain an orphan mage was born. She herself was responsible for the demise of the owners of Heaven's Gate and made it her business for a while to "take care" of those who had most offended her sense of justice. Though her Euthanatos-like activities have abated to a great degree since then, she has not forgotten her past and will act without pause to destroy those who prey upon children to satisfy their carnal and depraved desires. For the most part, however, Tara is just a woman who want to find love and escape the darkness that has for too long been her womb. She is a romantic at

heart and yet has yet to find anyone capable of truly taking her from her horrid past. She has not given up hope, however, and spends most evenings scouring the clubs and venues for her knight in shining armor. She is also quite celibate, saving herself until she is sure of love, and she long ago swore off drugs and the like, though she does not push her views on those around her. Merchant -- [Hollow One] An Orphan Pattern mage, Merchant has a knack for finding anything he seeks, so long as he looks in the right place, wherever that may be. Once a nerdy science wiz-kid, his parent's divorce shattered his illusion of happiness and Awakened his slumbering Avatar. He soon discovered that his imaginary laser guns, swords and other paraphernalia were real, and with that discovery his confidence in himself grew. He ran away from home in his early teens to make his own way in the world and was quickly sucked into the gothic-punk scene where his new poise and demeanor drew the alternative girls to him like never before. To satisfy them and their companions he would procure whatever they might desire, and it wasn't long before the gawky kid became the mysterious Merchant of Boston. He and Tara first met when she had come to him in the hopes of acquiring some very illegal toxins, and since then have remained closoe friends, forming the Ushers together with more mundane colleagues of theirs. Merchant has few real concerns, preferring to simply spend his nights enjoying his new life and testing its limits. One day, however, the dark reality of his world may come crushing down on him in a way he is not ready to handle. Plato -- [Hollow One] When this Orphan is not beating the living shit out of someone, he enjoys deep philosophical discourse on everything from the metaphysics of colors to the weight of sins. Naturally gifted with a martial artist's body and an unfortunate penchant for aggresiveness, Plato had always been a rough kid: but only if someone would not satisfy his desire for debate. He earned quite a name for himself on the streets that led to his near-death at the hands of one rough gang that was sick of his shit. Unfortunately for the gang members, their target's angry Avatar Awakened in the middle of the beating and turned the tables on them, leaving them with pain to remember. Since that time few people have dared mess with this tall character. He and Tara first met as potential lovers, but she quickly realized that he was not the "one" she sought. They are good friends still, but deep down inside Plato wishes that things could have been different. He will do anything to protect her, a fact that gives her and the rest of the Ushers a large degree of security from mundane sources. Though he spends most of his time with Tara and the rest of the gang, he does like to occasionally slum on his own and find someone to beat the living shit out of, his favorite ploy being to aggravate the police and goad them into roughing him up and then lashing out at them in his "defense." Order of the Silent Threnody Arcane Houses: Johanathan Bard House, New Haven, Connecticut (3) Horizon Realm: None Nodes: Harkness Tower, Yale University (2) Charter Oak Tree, Hartford (4) The Threnody has its home in the historic Johnathan Bard House in downtown New Haven, just across the street from Albertus Magnus College. Only some of its members are residents, the remainder living on their own and using the House more as a private social club. In times of trouble, however, all members fulfill their duties and come to the aid of their fellow cabalists. The Threnody harnesses a few New England Nodes at present -- including Harkness Tower at Yale and the Charter Oak in Hartford -- but does not yet have enough Odyllic Force from which to create its own Horizon Realm, something the mages

all feel to be not only useful, but perhaps necessary in the face of the growing might of the Technocracy. The most important concern among the Threnody currently is what to do about Ethan Grimaldi and his actions last year. Ethan, a new member of the chantry, killed his own mentor, the Euthanatos Master, Marius Valentine. Some believe that perhaps Ethan had become a Nephandus, unknown to all. Others hold that such mayhem and bloodshed is simply the "way of the Euthanatos," one more reason for casting them from the chantry entirely. And a few think that Ethan is not even guilty, but has been framed by some unseen assassin. In any case, Ethan disappeared after the murder and the chantry has been unable to locate him since. They would give much to find him, though as to what they will do with him once he is back within the walls of Bard House, they are undecided. For now Master Deis asks that if he is discovered, he simply be watched and word be sent to the chantry immediately. Alain Deis -- [Ecstatic Master] Chantry Seneschal, Resident. The most powerful Tradition mage in Connecticut appears to be only in his middle-years, but in truth was born in Amsterdam in the sixteenth century. As a child he was "adopted" by a resident chantry of great renown and eventually became a full member himself upon his own Awakening. Alain traveled for much of his extended existence, seeking out new experiences for both the flesh and the mind, his quest bringing him to the United States in the late 1960's. He was saved from capture by the Technocratic Union during a peace march on the New Haven Green by members of the Silent Threnody and was given sanctuary in order to throw investigators off his trail. The Ecstatic remained and was eventually accepted into the Order. In 1978 he became Seneschal and has since remained so, his ability to foresee the likely future proving to be exactly what the Order needs to avoid detection and destruction in the increasingly technological world. Alain spends much of his time in a drug haze, his mind wandering the possible futures and chasing down ripples in time, but he is quite capable of coherent and wise leadership when needed. He has foreseen the very possible destruction of the chantry in the near future and is now probing the time streams further in order to find out just who or what poses such a threat to himself and his fellow mysticks. When the cause is found, Alain hopes to make a preemptive strike, his usual strategy for dealing with such threats. As a person, he is somewhat distant and distracted, but is not a man to be trifled with. He is not a big stickler for rules and such and, therefore, runs the chantry with a light hand, though one which can turn to an iron fist should survival become an issue. Miriam Koch -- [Hermetic Mistress] Resident. Well preserved for her seventy-odd years, Miriam Koch is a master mage and one of the most directly formidable opponents one could find in the area. Her primary concern and driving goal is to bring the lost House Tremere back into the Order of Hermes. Her reasons are not altruistic, however, but rather greedy: she hopes to acquire their secrets of vampirism and blood thaumaturgy for her own gain, hopefully allowing her to find a way to control and bind their kind in order to literally rule the world! While her chances of complete success are foolishly unlikely, she is sure that she can at least succeed in some manner. Unlike the rest of her colleagues, Miriam is well aware of the existence of the Tremere chantry in Hartford. She has spied upon the literall fortress via summoned servants, but has still learned little more than a few identities and the general pecking order. She hopes to be able to one day actually witness the inner-most secret rituals and magicks of the accursed creatures and bends her energies towards this for now. She also hopes to meet and eventually parlay with the chantry's most senior vampire(s) about their rejoining the Hermetic Order. How she

will accomplish this without jeopardizing her chantry or herself is a problem she has yet to solve. Boudain Tsalk -- [Hermetic Adept] Resident. A man of distinctly unplaceable ethnic origins, Boudain has been Miriam's student since their meeting at a lecture on Enochian Lexigraphy held in the Collegiate Chantry of Salzburg in Austria years ago. Since then he has become her right hand and has willingly carried out much of the "scut work" necessary for the furthering of their studies. Like his idealistic mentor he hopes to reunite House Tremere with the Order of Hermes at large, and also like her, he hopes to profit in the bargain. Unlike Miriam, however, Boudain will not be satisfied with simply trying to succeed, but instead has convinced himself that he must succeed. As a backup -- and just in case everything else fails -Boudain has versed himself well in demonology and has even begun to dabble in minor summonings and contact with the lesser demons and their otherworldly ilk. Naturally, he is being led to believe that he is in full control over such contact for now and that he has nothing to fear. Boudain's hubris and hunger for power may one day open the floodgates for these hellish denizens to work their way into the chantry as a whole and bring their version of pleasure to the earth. So far, however, Boudain has not summoned anything more dangerous than a minor imp or two and has been able to banish them with ease after his experimentation. Though he resides in the Bard House, Mr. Tsalk maintains a condemned townhouse in New Haven's slums for his darker sorcery. Kathrine Haylock -- [Ecstatic Adept] Resident. Since her Awakening in 1969 due to drugs, "Kate" has remained Alain's student, though her former status as his lover faded long ago as her "tastes" changed. The two remain closest confidante's, however, though some things are still kept secret from one another. While Alain's life seems to have ceased outside his mystickal concerns, Kathrine remains attached to the physical world around her and likes to believe things will stay that way. Though she resides within the Bard House, she spends much time in the heart of the city seeking another and hopefully stronger fix to satisfy her appetite for ecstacy. And it is not drugs or sex that will do it for her anymore: it is fear. Kathrine enjoys playing the game of innocent woman and placing herself in great danger, satisfaction only achieved if she gives way to real fear. As her own power grows, however, it becomes more and more difficult to find a new source of fear. Lately, she has begun to consider just how frightening it would be to be snared by the Nephandi, to be dead, or to be hunted by something that could surely destroy not only her body, but her soul. She keeps these thoughts to herself, naturally, but nonetheless is unable to put such thoughts aside. It is only a matter of time before she finds what she is looking for, and then she may find more than she bargained for. Aside from this dark quest of hers, she is an otherwise warm and open woman who truly brings light into the oftimes overly stuffy chantry house. Lucas "Mongoose" Lin -- [Virtual Adept] Resident The newest member of the chantry, Lucas has helped to bring the house's finances and other matters out of the dark ages and into the next century by computerizing a great deal of the Order's affairs. In addition to simply proving himself as a valuable source of information, Lucas, barely out of his teens, has demonstrated his worth by helping to effectively "hide" and protect the cabal from electronic intrusion and examination by both mundane and more sinister organizations. He has also been somewhat successful in better educating his fellow cabalists about technomagic and its ways, providing them an edge against the Technocratic Union they never before possessed. Lucas rarely leaves the chantry except for occasional forays to technology conventions or the corner convenience store. Online he is known only as Mongoose, a

nosy information thief who has shown Union Net-snakes just how dangerous it is to mess with him. Lately he has bent his energies towards romancing and hopefully successfully seducing his online love, the mysterious Adept he knows only as Paradisa. Who she really is, however, he may not want to know...! Dr. Martin Steele -- [Etheric Adept] A futuristic Indiana Jones, Dr. Steele still imagines himself a true pulp hero, despite the fact that the vast majority of his life is spent in research in the halls and laboratories of academia. The good doctor cherishes the scientific conversation and debates that occur in his Tradition's private clubs in Europe and does not feel fully at-home in the Threnody's chantry house, keeping his attendance regular though infrequent. Instead he chums around with some of the freer minds to be found at the cozy home of the International Academy of Theoretical Scientists, well aware that more than a few Union minds might be in attendance at any given time. Martin resides in a handsome home in Madison, but is often out of town for symposiums and more resultsoriented work. His current research is in the field of supra-chemical bonds, which has led him to develop materials that mainstream science still believes to be impossibilities. Naturally, such discoveries have been kept under wraps, but Dr. Steele is not above taking advantage of these advances for his own protection and profit. Julia Leblanc -- [Ecstatic Disciple] Total babe. Julia is in her mid-twenties and already a killer vixen. While she does partake of a number of recreational drugs, her real deal is sex. She is uncomfortable with the stuffiness of the chantry house and so has her own incredible townhouse near Yale, complete with its own pleasure dungeon and similar sanctums of iniquity. She routinely hosts elite little soires for the sexually unique and she spends many evenings hunting the local club scene for something new and tasty to satisfy her insatiable desires. Ostensibly she runs a tantric meditation workshop to pay the rent and such, which is really just a means of keeping her eyes open for other potential willworkers. Occasionally she plays the High Society game, but for the most part she finds them dispassionate about the more physical aspects of existence and prefers to "hunt" on the fringes instead. For her, Ascension is personal, and she has little interest in using her magick to aid the world as a whole. She still gives her due to the chantry, but really only uses it for her own sense of protection. Tristan Connelly -- [Chorister Disciple] A junior priest at the Shrine at Yale University, Tristan is a man who has dedicated his existence to God, after years of troubled confusion as to his beliefs and mission. He has been in the Order for almost a decade, though his clerical duties and professoral responsibilities, as he puts it, keep him from regular attendance at the Bard House. The truth is that he cannot help but find himself very attracted to the Ecstatic, Julia Leblanc, and though he is aware that she is rarely on the premises herself, he wishes to keep any chance of a confrontation as remote as possible. Deep inside he hopes that he can turn her to embrace the traditions of the Chorus, but he realizes that such is really no more than foolish delusion. In order to better keep his mind from such distractions, Tristan has been looking for some kind of personal crusade which he can expend his energies and emotions on. Unless truly pushed, however, this well-intentioned clergyman is unlikely to leave the serene chapel at Yale University for the grimy underworld that waits only a few blocks from the campus grounds. Twisted Horn Coven Arcane Houses: The Cradle, Blood Street, Lyme, Connecticut (4) Horizon Realm: None Nodes: The Devil's Oven, East Haddam (5)

Since their exodus from the vampire-controlled Acolytes of Samuel Bridgewater in 1666, the Twisted Horn Coven, led by the now nearmythical Persephone Cullen, attempted to return again to the root magicks that had drawn them to the Acolytes in the first place. Such was not easy, however, their rituals and beliefs having been so long tainted by vampiric origins and, therefore, anathema to these bornagain purists. Their early attempts, however, at restoring their magicks were failures and some even dared to suggest that the coven return to its earlier ways by perhaps finding an undead mentor of its own, though such comments were kept private for the most part, the majority of the witches still wanting revenge upon the vampire suspected of having used them for so long as its own private feeding herd. It is likely that the coven would have degenerated completely into mere paganists had they not made the acquaintance in 1704 of Roger Caufey, a Rafastio revenant from Marseilles, France and a Verbena High Priest to boot. Caufey had, in fact, been sent by his Tal'mahe'Ra superiors -- vampires dedicated to protecting humanity from the worst predations of their own kind -- to establish a firm foothold in the New World in anticipation of the eventual machinations of the Children of Caine. Already the Tremere Madelaine Coventry had caught the attention of the True Black Hand and Caufey's first order of business was to ensure that she did not dominate the mortal occult underground and use it as her personal weapon. To this end Caufey sought out the disenfranchised witches and worked at befriending Cullen and her companions, demonstrating to them how one need not be undead nor bow down to them in order to wield power equal to or greater than that which they possessed. The coven was quite impressed and was easily won over to Caufey's point of view and wasted no time in asceding to him leadership of the Twisted Horn, which he greatfully accepted. It has been almost three-hundred years since Caufey's arrival and yet today he still leads the coven from his colonial home on aptly-named Blood Street in Lyme, Connecticut, the house itself referred to by the witches themselves as the Cradle. The coven has grown to the full thirteen in strength and today all members are revenants, the result of Caufey's own intimacy with Cullen, aided by a little blood magick of his own. The coven is dedicated to serving the Tal'mahe'Ra and Caufey maintains communications with the invisible sect's New England contacts, dutifully upholding the True Black Hand's goal of clipping the wings of the Camarilla and the Sabbat. Along with its membership the coven has grown in influence and wealth like its rival witch factions and like them plays a game of domination throughout the region. Aside from Caufey himself, two other witches have also Awakened and are full members of the Verbena Tradition and control a Node in a cave called the Devil's Oven, which is itself located in the Devil's Hopyard park. This cabal of three is seen by most mages of that Tradition to be a fringe group though, one to be watched with caution, their dealings with the vampire world seemingly making them irresistable recruits for the Nephandi. Ironically, this is exactly what they are battling in Coventry. Roger Caufey -- [Verbena Master and Rafastio revenant] High Warlock. The Technocratic Union Though specific Convention Outposts or amalgams are not given, they do exist throughout New England. They are not the in-your-face stereotyped technomancers, however, but rather very subtle and indirect masters of reality, preferring to strike in the most seemingly mundane yet effective way possible against their foes, when they are confronted with such. Truly catastrophic enemies -- those supernatural entities which threaten to reveal their existence to the general public, and the like, along with those who could cause a serious breach in the integrity of the Gauntlet itself -- are treated

with more directness, though still the kind that would not leave your average citizen too curious in its aftermath. CIA agents, credit agencies, Federal Reserve officers, military and astronautical engineers, nuclear scientists, chemical researchers, software companies, prestigious university professors, media magnates, and the like are all representative of the Technocracy's "face" in New England. Amalgams would not be recognized by any but the most privy insiders as anything other than a mundane committee of some kind and the sites of their work would be seen as nothing out of the ordinary. This is the very reason why they are so damned hard to pin down and put a stop to. They seem to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The truth is that their actual Awakened numbers are very small, but their ability to work together (for the most part) and to capitalize on that cooperation in order to amplify their influence is astonishingly efficient, which is essentially the whole point of technology anyway. Beware, the Truth is Out There! Thaumaturgists and Hedge-Magicians ChILDREN OF HECATE New England is home to a plethora of small-time cults, secret societies and hidden enclaves, all of whom claim power of one kind or another. Though the Awakened scoff at most of these groups as childish and purile, possessed of not only no power, but no useful knowledge either, there are a few cabals which straddle the fence, soto-speak, and are privy to some very dangerous secrets, mortals whose power is not all illusory and can indeed be said to be of real use. The Children of Hecate are one such group. The Children were founded in Boston by Asenath Bowen, a relative of Providence's own Enoch Bowen, the now deceased leader of the now defunct Starry Wisdom Church, of which Asenath himself was a late member. After the cult's extermination in 1877 by the Society of Leopold, Asenath and a small cell of believers removed themselves to Boston where they worshipped in quiet secrecy for some years, fearful of the Inquisitors' return. In 1891, assured that by now the coast was clear for the most part, Asenath and his devoted companions made their existence known in order to attract a greater membership, calling themselves the Children of Hecate and proclaiming themselves a simple fertility cult based on the worship of the ancient Greek goddess Hecate. This was an innocuous cover for worship of ShubNiggurath, whom the Children saw as the true origin of the Hecate myths anyway, but one which worked, the sect attracting a number of "spiritual seekers" from all walks of life over the following years. Like his predecessor, Asenath possessed very real knowledge of hedgemagic and was able to perform powerful feats given time and the necessary components. The Children concentrated their energies on summoning Hecate herself and began holding hedonistic ritual masses in the hopes of attracting the goddess' attentions. To the surprise of all, including Asenath himself, the ritual finally seemed to work in 1897 when a manifestation of Shub-Niggurath exhibiting vampiric qualities appeared before the orgiastic revelers and slew half of them in a mad blood feast. Instead of being filled with fear, however, Asenath and the other survivors became instant fanatics and threw themselves at the mercy of this "Dark Lady," as they came to call this aspect of Hecate. The Dark Lade did not provide them with any instructions before her sudden departure, however, leaving Asenath to speculate that she was testing them and would return again with their destiny so long as they remained faithful. To this end they have continued their wild sado-masochistic orgies on a regular basis and have proven that they will stop anyone who dares to interfere. This last tendancy was shown with clarity in 1910 when a member of the Arcanum infiltrated their cult to report on their practices. A month later the Boston Chapter House suffered tremendously when the Children

set the structure ablaze in retaliation for the deception, causing the Arcanum to take a more careful look at this dangerous sect. While the Children of Hecate are not formally allied with any of the major supernatural players in the region, their worship of ShubNiggurath makes them prime candidates for recruitment or use by any of the agencies that pay homage to or deal with the enigmatic Wyrm. Asenath has since died, but his heirs have made it their life's work to master his thaumaturgical arts and to continue to appease the Dark Lady until she returns to show them the Way....
