BENTLEY PULS

An interactive simulation program for the analysis of fluid flow in piping networks
Bentley PULS is a native Windows interactive simulation program for the dynamic response analysis of fluid flow under steady-state pulsating flow conditions in piping networks. Bentley PULS is based on one-dimensional plane wave theory, and employs an efficient transfer matrix approach in the frequency domain. Other competing programs use the time domain solution which is less accurate due to discretization of the elements and adjustment of speed of sound in some legs to fit the uniform element length needed for the analysis.
PULS is ideal for predicting pressure pulsation levels and acoustic shaking forces. The program may be used for solving performance problems caused by reciprocating equipment or flow generated sources in piping and pipeline systems, and in compressor, pump, control valve and meter stations. Unlike older analog computing methods, Bentley PULS provides a state-of-the-art digital solution. The technology is based on methods developed and proven under a multi-million dollar research program at Nova Corporation (Trans-Canada) and University of Calgary (Alberta). SI units. Customized units can also be specified. New input spreadsheets are bi-directionally synchronized with the graphical plot to navigate quickly to find, check or make global changes to element, pressure/temperature or data.

Libraries of Components, Loss Models and Fluid Properties

Bentley PULS provides comprehensive and extensible libraries of piping components, loss models for components such as reducers, orifice plates, valves and tees. Gas properties are calculated using AGA-8 equation of state. PULS also accepts user-defined liquid or gas properties.

Key Benefits
Reciprocating compressor data and pipe span & bottle sizing

Ability to check pulsations against 1995 & proposed 2001 API 618 guidelines Ability to predict and eliminate pulsation problems at the design stage Interactive comparative results between two models Avoid costly consultant fees Troubleshoot flow induced vibration problems Evaluate bottle, acoustic filter and choked tube designs Automatic generation of gas properties for common natural gas mixtures

System Model
Nodes defining the 3D system geometry are assigned with inter-connecting elements. Element transfer matrices are integrated into an overall system matrix composed of linear equations with complex coefficients and variables. The variables include RMS values of pulsating pressure and volume flow velocity at each node. A sparse variant of Gaussian elimination for the solution of unsymmetrical equations solves for the results.

Graphical Review of Analysis Results

PULS provides text reports, and on-screen synchronized result grids to quickly identify areas of concern. Animated acoustic mode shapes help identify and solve certain resonance frequency issues. Other graphical color coded results include pulsation ratios based on API 618 guidelines, spectral plots of pulsation pressures, volume flow velocities, impedance, shaking forces and cylinder pressure-volume trace card (PV card). Harmonic shaking forces can be automatically transferred to AutoPIPE for evaluation of dynamic piping responses.

Easy-to-Use Object based Graphical Interface

Bentley PULS has a sophisticated Windows user-friendly point & click, toolbar and menu-driven interface for quickly developing system models while minimizing data entry. Model verification is rapid due to extensive graphics that highlight model features at any point in the model building process. Importing models from AutoPIPE or 3D CAD programs like AutoPLANT, PlantSpace or PDS avoids re-modeling the piping system. PULS performs consistency checks to identify errors, and supports English (imperial) or
