HERALD
Herald moving to morning delivery
Staff reports DELPHOS The Delphos Herald is proud to announce that on Wednesday, May 1, the newspaper will become a morning publication. As a result of this change, customers in the city limits of Delphos and newsstands will receive the paper by carrier before 8 a.m. Newspapers for customers outside the city limits will be sent to the local post offices for same-day delivery. For in-town readers of The Herald, they will now receive the hard-print edition hours earlier each day. It will also allow for the delphosherald.com website and Facebook page to be updated much earlier and provide an opportunity for more developing-story and breaking-news updates throughout the day. This change in publication time will allow the editorial staff to provide more timely news coverage to its customers and also provide a greater opportunity to update developing stories and provide breaking news on The Heralds web site, Editor Nancy Spencer said. We will also add an additional reporter to the staff to offer more local news to our readers. Spencer went on to say she was excited about the changes because it will allow the The Herald to respond to the demand of readers to receive their news sooner. As the push to a 24-hour cycle for news across both print and digital products continues, this move will position The Herald to answer those reader needs. Several new theme pages have also been added for better readability of The Herald, making it easier for subscribers to find the types of stories they like to read. The Next Generation page runs on Wednesday and the Senior Lifestyle page runs on the last Saturday of the month. More theme pages are in progress. After May 1, whenever customers who receive their newspaper from the postal service need to stop their mail, the paper will be held with it. Country superstar Flag George Jones dead

The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. When it comes to country music, George Jones was The Voice. Other great singers have come and gone, but this fact remained inviolate until Jones passed away Friday at 81 in a Nashville hospital after a year of ill health. Today someone else has become the greatest living singer of traditional country music, but there will never be another George Jones, said Bobby Braddock, the Country Music Hall of Fame songwriter who provided Jones with 29 songs over the decades. No one in country music has influenced so many other artists. He did it with that voice. Rich and deep, strong enough to crack like a whip, but supple enough to bring tears. It was so powerful, it made Jones the first thoroughly modern country superstar, complete with the substance abuse problems and rich-and-famous celebrity lifestyle that included mansions, multiple divorces and to hear one fellow performer tell it fistfuls of cocaine. He was a beloved and at times a notorious figure in Nashville and his problems were just as legendary as his songs. But when you dropped the needle on one of his records, all that stuff went away. And you were left with The Voice. That voice helped Jones achieve No. 1 songs in five separate decades, 1950s to 1990s. And its qualities were admired by more than just his fellow country artists but by Frank Sinatra, Pete Townshend, Elvis Costello, James Taylor and countless others. If we all could sound like we wanted to, wed all sound like George Jones, Waylon Jennings once sang. Word of his death spread Friday morning as his peers paid tribute. Merle Haggard put it best, perhaps: The world has lost the greatest country singer of all time. Amen. The greatest voice to ever grace country music will never die, Garth Brooks said. Jones has a place in every heart that ever loved any kind of music. And Dolly Parton added, My heart is absolutely broken. George Jones was my all time favorite singer and one of my favorite people in the world. The following is a weekly In Jones case, thats not hyperbole. Jones survived long battles with alcoholism and drug addiction, brawls, accidents and close encounters with death, including bypass surgery and a tour bus crash that he only avoided by deciding at the last moment to take a plane. His failure to appear for concerts left him with the nickname No Show Jones, and he later recorded a song by that name and often opened his shows by singing it. His hits included the sentimental Whos Gonna Fill Their Shoes, the foot-tapping The Race is On, the foot-stomping I Dont Need Your Rockin Chair, the melancholy She Thinks I Still Care, the rockin White Lightning, and the barfly lament Still Doing Time. Jones also recorded several duets with Tammy Wynette, his wife for six years, including Golden Ring, Near You, Southern California and Were Gonna Hold On. He also sang with such peers as Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard and with Costello and other rock performers. But his signature song was He Stopped Loving Her Today, a weeper among weepers about a man who carries his love for a woman to his grave. The 1980 ballad, which Jones was sure would never be a hit, often appears on surveys as the most popular country song of all time and won the Country Music Associations song of the year award an unprecedented two years in a row. Jones won Grammy awards in 1981 for He Stopped Loving Her Today and in 1999 for Choices. He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992 and in 2008 was among the artists honored in Washington at the Kennedy Center. He was in the midst of a yearlong farewell tour when he passed away. He was scheduled to complete the tour in November with an all-star packed tribute in Nashville. Stars lined up to sign on to the show, many remembering kindnesses over the years.

Matt Krendl, owner of Acme, said the room is needed for the new business. The front lot will currently be used for parking, although Krendl said the company may use it for expansion in the fall. Ryan Spring, Andy Hoffman, Adam Wiltsie and Jeremy Finn took first place with the aquarium they made for Zoomania. Sandy Talbooms fourth grade made zoo animals in cages as part of a science project. After making the cages, the students wrote a report on their animals and makebelieve stories using the animals as characters. STATE/LOCAL

This and That

by HELEN KAVERMAN
The Flood of 1913 did not pick and choose its victims. It struck the rich and the poor alike. Orville Wright, his father, Bishop Wright and his sister, Katherine Wright had been marooned in their small unpretentious frame house on the West Side of Dayton. The aged father was taken by boat to another nearby house, where he was again marooned for three days. Orville and his sister escaped on an auto truck to a refuge center. The flood stopped just short of wiping out the priceless original records and drawings of the aeroplane that Wright Brothers had invented and flew just a few years earlier. Our state capitol, Columbus, is dissected by the Scioto and the Olentangy Rivers so it suffered from a great deal of flooding. It was estimated that over 10,000 persons were homeless on the West Side as a result of the flood and at least 15,000 people were stranded on the second floor of their homes. The Norfolk and Western Railroad managed to get one train into Columbus from Portsmouth. The train practically swam into Union Station after creeping through high waters most of the way from Portsmouth on the Ohio River. Nearly 100 babies were born in the flood district and at refuge camps in Columbus between Tuesday morning and Saturday. One doctor took care of three child births in four hours in a graveyard. Shots exchanged and cause considerable excitement in Delphos

Sunday evening about 7 oclock, west bound train P.F. No. 75 pulled into town and stopped, the train extending from the Franklin street crossing to the east switch. Shortly after stopping, a shot was heard, followed by another, and another, until five shots had been heard, accompanied by loud yelling. The disturbance seemed to be at about the middle of the train. The trainmen investigated but found nothing except one fellow who had fallen into the creek. They were unable to get anything out of him, however. They did not notify the officers of the trouble and the train again started up, but was stopped at State street, where it seems that the trainmen started out to eject the tramps from the train. There was more swearing and yelling and rocks flew through the air. The tramps were not dislodged and the train pulled out with them. Shortly after the train had left, it was reported to police that one of the shots had entered a lower floor window at the residence of the Sister of Charity on east First street. (This was the old residence located on the corner of First and Pierce St. R.H.) The ball, a 38 calibre had passed through one of the south windows into a room occupied by one of the Sisters, thence through the transom and lodged in the wall in the hall, where it was afterward found. It seemed as it was a battle among tramps who were on the train. A look over the ground at the railroad track this morning failed to reveal anything. Delphos Herald, Jan. 21, 1897 Canal Ice Gives Way With a Crowd of Skaters An accident occurred on the canal about 5 oclock Monday, but for timely aid presence of mind of those on terra firma, might have resulted in several drownings. A crowd of skaters were on the ice above the Second street bridge. There were some 15 or 20 of them skating in a bunch at the time, when the ice gave way opposite H.J. Wulfhorsts store and 12 of the skaters were precipitated into the water about eight feet deep, two small girls being in the number. Almost simultaneously with the breaking of the ice, the air was rent with screams from those in the water and on the bank. Pandemonium reigned for a time, after which the work of rescuing the hapless victims began. They held on to the edges of the ice until a large wooden crate was pushed across the ice for them to hold onto. A bystander and two others who were attracted by the cries, came to the rescue and pulled them out one by one, the girls first. After all were safe, they ran home for dry clothing. It was a narrow escape, especially the little girls; one of them and also one of the boys went completely under the water once or twice before being rescued. Those who took an unwelcome midwinter bath were: Celia Stump, Beulah Pennell, Syl and Will Walsh, Alfred Oberwagner, Carl Roth, Ed Searing, Roy Wagner, Alex. Stallkamp, Art Moon, Claude Fast, and a small son of Chas. Danials. Delphos Herald, Jan. 14, 1897 Cutting In Delphos Saloon Several people were in John Reckers saloon on Canal street Tuesday night, and C. Hummer and J. Pohlman got into an altercation over a game of dice. Pohlman is said to have been intoxicated, and to avert trouble, Hummer called him aside to smooth his ruffled feathers, when, without warning, Pohlman whipped out a knife and made a slash at Hummer.

was improvised by a small tent made of bed covers in the cemetery. The flood trouble for Cincinnati began on Tuesday, March 25. By Thursday it had rained steadily for 34 hours. By Monday the flood stage was at 69.8 feet. Covington and Newport, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati were badly flooded as were other towns on both sides of the Ohio River. Railroads in Ohio were hard hit by the flood. One report in The Delphos Herald stated that the Northern Ohio Railroad (later the A C & Y) would probably not be able to run any trains for several days as there were many washouts between Delphos and Bluffton. There are also bridges out in Columbus Grove, Rimer and Carey. About a dozen bridges are out on the C H & D, on this branch of the line and every town on the railroad between Dayton and Delphos is suffering from flooded conditions. The tracks in many cases were still under water. Officials of the railroad offered as high as $5 a day to laborers who would help repair the C H & D tracks. There were washouts on the Pennsylvania RR, including on both sides of the Auglaize and over culverts east of Delphos. In one place the track was washed away for a distance of about 60 feet and in another place for a distance of 140 feet. The engine and rear sleeping car of the Pennsylvania train plunged

into the Mad River near West Liberty. The sleeper car landed on an island. Two members of the train crew were reported killed. The Clover Leaf tracks between Delphos and Ohio City and other points were in bad condition. A washout near the Fisher Stone Quarry at Delphos was a bad one and would

take some time to repair. The Ohio Electric Traction line was under several feet of water. The Delphos Herald received bulletins from many, many Ohio towns all up and down See FLOOD, page 8

The keen edged blade caught Humemr in the right leg, halfway between the hip and knee, cutting an ugly looking gash, six inches long and nearly an inch deep. Pohlman is a farmer living east of town. Doggie refused to have him arrested, but says he must pay the doctor bill. Delphos Herald, Jan. 14, 1897 Horse Thief? Last Tuesday, a welldressed man called at a farm house near the home of Mr. Sherrick, east of town, driving a fine looking horse, which he claimed was a 2:20 pacer. He gave the name of Haynes, and asked to stay a few days to allow his horse a good rest. Haynes remained at the farm house and the horse was quartered in the barn. Wednesday night the animal got into the manger and one of its forelegs was broken. Haynes had the animal shot. Thursday he gave the buggy, harness and lap robe to the farmer for burying the animal. Haynes disappeared and now the farmer fears that the property was stolen. Delphos Herald, Jan. 14, 1897 Horribly Burned at Brewery Late Friday afternoon, Jacob Werner, about 20 years old, an employee of the Delphos Brewery, went into the cellar where a small gasoline stove had been placed in one of the 100 bbl. beer casks to dry it thoroughly after being varnished, an operation which occurs yearly. Werner saw that the blaze had gone out and pulled the

stove from the cask and went upstairs to get a cover for the hole. He took a brewers lamp along, and in stooping down to adjust the cover, the gas which had accumulated in the cask ignited from the lamp and before Werner could move, the flames rushed out and almost enveloped him. His hair was almost burned off, and the skin on his face and hands hung in shreds. His clothing took fire but he hastened to a nearby valve and obtained water to douse the flames. He then walked upstairs and made known his injuries by simply remarking, I got it. A hurry up call was sent for physicians and Drs. Marsh and Williamson were soon at the brewery and administered relief, the burns by that time having become very painful. The doctors do not think Werners eyesight is injured. He was removed to his home on east Third street, where he is now resting as easy as can be expected. Delphos Herald, Jan. 14, 1897 Ladies Night Out Eleven of our most prominent married ladies deliberately entered the handsome home of Dr. and Mrs. A. Borman Monday night and proceeded to conduct affairs after plans originally arranged by them, to the complete surprise of Mrs. Borman, who for the time being, forgot that it was the forty-second anniversary of her birth, and did not comprehend the meaning until her memory was refreshed. After Mrs. Borman had recovered from her surprise, arrangements were made for the entertainment of the ladies. They did not come unprepared, however,

ATTENTION:

as each carried a basket of good things, which were soon spread on the table, and after the evening was most enjoyable passed in conversation, games, vocal and instrumental music, including German songs by Mrs. Fannie Reul and Mrs. Felix Steinle, the ladies repaired to the dining room where the table was groaning under the weight of good things. The ladies lingered at the table and animated conversation ruled supreme. There was not a dull moment during the entire evening, and the plans of the ladies were successfully carried out. As souvenirs of their unexpected but nevertheless welcome call, the ladies presented Mrs. Borman with a handsome jardinier and calla lily and also a beautiful Japanese flower vase. The invaders were: Mesdames Felix Steinle, Kellar, Fanny Reul, John Hotz, Frank Stump, John Roth, H.L. Leilich, B.F. Marshal, Frank Burger, A. Bormuth and Marie Jettinger. Delphos Herald, Jan. 14, 1897 J.H. Lange and Family Caught in Terrific Storm A storm of exceptional severity swept over the country south and southeast of Delphos Monday evening. While a part of the storm could be noticed from this city, the most destructive portion of it passed between Lima and Wapakoneta. Mr. J.H. Lange with his family was motoring from Cincinnati to Delphos and was caught in the storm just north of Wapakoneta. It was a wind and electrical storm of considerable violence accompanied by a tremendous

downpour of rain. Mr. Lange says that the rainfall was so heavy that the water flowed over the road at a point where, according to a farmer living nearby, it had not been known to reach that level within the last thirty years. It continued to rise at this point until the stream crossing the highway was fully two feet deep. Mr. Lange says that it was the most terrific storm from every standpoint he has ever witnessed. Traffic on the Western Ohio electric line between Lima and Wapakoneta was held up by the storm, twentyone trolley poles being blown down. Trees were uprooted, one whole orchard being destroyed. Mrs. Lange and family had a narrow escape as a large tree was blown down within a short distance of their car. At two-thirty Tuesday, a telephone call from the Idlewild club house, northeast of Delphos on the banks of the Auglaize river, where A.B. King and Jos. Jettinghoff, with their families are spending the week, informed the Herald that the river had risen two feet in ten minutes at that point. The roar of the waters could be heard before the flood reached the vicinity of the club house. Everyone is a prisoner of his own experiences. No one can eliminate prejudices just recognize them. Edward R. Murrow, American broadcast journalist (1908-1965)

Congress got caught this week trying to Slick Willy out of Obamacare. If this program is so great, why isnt the president all about it? Why isnt his family enrolling in the program? Why was it all hush-hush? I read somewhere they wanted to send a message to Obama that the plan wasnt working out so well. I have an idea; repeal it if its so bad. Here is what Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) had to say Thursday about it: I did not support President Obamas health care law because I did not believe it was the right approach to health care reform, but President Obama and his Democratic colleagues insisted upon ramming through a government takeover of our nations health care system against the will of the majority of Americans. If Members of Congress wish to exempt themselves from Obamacare so badly, then they should work to exempt all Americans through the repeal and replacement of this flawed law. I will continue to work towards repealing this faulty law and replacing it with meaningful health care reform that will give Americans real choices for affordable and accessible health care. Heres the real deal. If Congress is against Obamacare, they can get rid of it. If Congress is against the deficit, they alone have the power to eliminate the deficit. If

Congress caught red-handed

Congress doesnt like the fact the budget isnt balanced, only they can balance the budget. They alone have the power. I cant do it. You cant do it. Only they can. Weve already seen health-care insurance costs skyrocket since Obamacares inception. The insurance companies arent going to take the hit. We know that. If an employer doesnt supply healthcare benefits next year, they do get penalized, but the first year, its such a small fine it will be worth it for most. The second year it gets quite a bit more expensive to pass on the option. By the end of the first year, the damage could be done. I am totally confused as to how anyone, let alone the government, thinks the government, that cant figure out where all their money goes in the first place, can afford to provide coverage to millions. My guess is it will be just like everything else the already beleaguered and battle-scarred middle class will take care of it. But whos going to take care of us?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

DEAR EDITOR: I am writing to urge those to vote yes on the upcoming Delphos Library Renewal Levy. I am a local mother and wife as well as the executive director of the Delphos Area Art Guild and each of my hats I carry in life have been positively affected by the library. As a mom and wife, I am able to reap the obvious benefits of a library, such as being able to select from a broad range of reading and educational materials each week. But something you may not recognize as an important function of the library is the significant community outreach it successfully supplies to Delphos. There is a full calendar of happenings for all ages. Recent events have included a tea party for mother and child(ren), a young and talented local magician, as well as highlighting some local small businesses throughout National Library Week often without a cost associated with the program. Community it is what the library is all about! They not only support their internal programming but are specifically supporting the growth of a local not-for-profit organization The Delphos Area Art Guild. We have a lovely second-floor space above the Museum of Postal History where ADA access is not available. Therefore, we approached the library regarding using their classroom space within the library as well as their site First Edition Building. Kelly Rist, the executive director of the library, listened, made a proposal to the board and within one week, we had an agreement. We have since decided to further our relationship by working together, creating more community-focused programs. We currently have a mission statement of DAAG + DPL = bigger, better and more community events. The library is so much more than books! And the wonderful board and staff allows this local treasure to look beyond its own walls and see how to best serve each person, family and business in Delphos. Thank you. Shauna Turner-Smith executive director, DAAG

In addition, it would improve technology, allowing farmers to accept payment via EBT cards. The bill would also remove barriers so schools can more easily purchase local foods. Finally, the bill would also invest in local economies by improving crop insurance products for small and diversified family farms. These farms would be provided with cost-assistance during the three year transition to an organic farm. Farms would also receive investments in infrastructure that would improve a farmers ability to aggregate, store, and distribute products. Additionally, small meat processing facilities would receive assistance for technical advances that would help improve businesses and strengthen the local economies. Simply put, this bill helps Americas farmers sell their products including Ohio-grown apples, sweet corn, leafy greens, dairy, meat, and more directly to Americas families so people are healthier and the local economy is stronger. The Local Farms, Food, and Jobs Act is plain common sense. By increasing access to fresh, local foods, we can expand markets for Ohios agricultural producers while improving health, creating jobs, and strengthening our economy.

ance run in the home half. Metzger blooped a hit to center, stole second, took third on a 1-out comebacker by Buescher and scored as Wagner blooped a hit to short right. We struggled hitting the ball in our two MAC games this week, so we talked about simply putting the ball in play. Good things happen when you put the ball in play and make a defense get you out, Coach Warnecke added. We made solid contact today, especially the first couple of innings. Defensively, we are fielding the well. Our mistakes are coming on throwing, so we have to concentrate through to the end. OHIO DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES Division of Wildlife Weekly Fish Ohio Fishing Report CENTRAL OHIO Delaware Lake (Delaware County) - This 1,017-acre lake north of Columbus is known for large crappie; fish the old river channel and deep water with woody cover using a jig tipped with a minnow. As water warms this spring, crappie will move to shallower water to spawn; fishing around woody cover with a minnow or jig suspended by a float can be rewarding. Crappie must be 9 inches or longer to keep and only 30 may be possessed. Channel catfish can be caught using cut bait; target the north end of the lake. Knox Lake (Knox County) Areas of woody shoreline cover are good locations to fish for largemouth bass at this time of year; try dark-colored creature baits and jig-and-pigs fished shallow for the best results. Most measure 12-18 inches but there is an 18-inch minimum for keepers here. Use jigs and minnows in brushy areas to take crappie; these will be moving shallow as the temperatures warm. Use cut bait, chicken livers or nightcrawlers fished along the bottom to take channel catfish; some weigh up to 10 pounds. Boats greater than 10-HP must travel at no-wake speeds. NORTHWEST OHIO Sandusky River (Sandusky County) - The river level is slightly high; the water clarity is average to poor. Walleye fishing is slow with some white bass being caught and effort is low; as water levels recede, the bite should pick up but the walleye run is likely nearing its end. White bass should be showing up in numbers soon. BThe best area to try is around the Miles Newton Bridge. Maumee River (Lucas County) - The river level is still high and walleye fishing has been poor as a result; levels make the river difficult to fish at this time and anglers should use extreme caution. Bluegrass Island is not accessible at this time. River conditions should improve and the fishing should improve as well; try the Orleans Park and White Street Landing area. For both: Most anglers use a

By JIM METCALFE jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com DELPHOS St. Johns senior Curtis Geise had come off a tough 3-0 loss to Midwest Athletic Conference power Minster Monday when he took the mound versus fellow MAC foe Marion Local on a pleasant Friday afternoon/evening at Stadium Park. Working on 3-days rest, he proved to be a bulldog as he went the distance in leading the Blue Jays to a 7-4 triumph. Though he didnt have his best stuff, tossing 136 pitches (76 strikes), he ceded seven hits and four runs (3 earned), walking three and fanning seven. He is a bulldog; he is our workhorse, Jays coach Ryan Warnecke noted. We kept asking him how his arm was and he kept telling us it was fine, that it felt the same as when he started. We just had to monitor his stuff to see if he was losing anything and to us, it didnt appear he was. Geise got out of the first inning after giving up a leadoff walk to Jordan Riethman. A sacrifice bunt (Dustin Riethman) and a passed ball put him at third but Geise made a great defensive play on an attempted suicide squeeze by Troy Homan, nailing J. Riethman at home. The Jays (4-7, 1-2 MAC) took advantage of their leadoff walk in the bottom of the first against righty starter Connor Unrast (4 IPs, 8 hits, 5 earned runs, 3 BBs, 4 Ks). Geise led off with that free pass, stole second and scored on a 1-out knock to left by Troy Warnecke. Drew Wagner (2-for-4) blooped a 2-out single to left but both runners were stranded. The hosts went up 5-0 in the home half of the second. Clay Courtney (2-for-2) grounded a single off the glove of diving third sacker Cole Griesdorn. floating jig-head fished on an 18to 24-inch leader with a 1/4- to Craig Klausing bunted him up

Do NOT keep any walleye shorter than 15 inches; please take a ruler with you. NORTHEAST OHIO Leesville Lake (Carroll County) - Adrenaline-seekers wanted. If you are looking for a rush, come out to this lake and try hooking into one of Ohios largest fish, the muskellunge. These fish are known as the fish of a thousand casts but during springtime, these fish are a little easier to target, helping reduce that ratio. Muskie, during the spring, move in shallow to spawn and hold tighter to structure; try casting 4- to 6-inch-sized minnow crankbaits and hang on for dear life if one hits! SOUTHEAST OHIO Salt Fork Lake (Guernsey County) - Now is the perfect time to fish for crappie around submerged brush piles and structure using pink and chartreuse twister tails tipped with a minnow; most are in the 9- to 10-inch range but fish up to 14 inches can be found. Spring fishing for saugeye is best near the beach or shallow flats using twisters, stickbaits or blade baits. Muskie fishing should also be kicking into gear; try trolling shallow crankbaits near the shore at 10 feet or less. Please note the new regulations for 2013: a daily bag limit of 4 largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, with two less than 15 inches and two greater than or equal to 15 inches. AEP ReCreation Area (Morgan/Muskingum/Noble counties) - Largemouth bass and sunfish should be biting well; better fishing is found in ponds that are off the beaten path since these lakes do not receive as much pressure as lakes adjacent to campsites. Bass can be caught on spinner baits and jigand-pig combinations. Bluegill can be taken with live bait such as red or meal worms or small spinners and poppers. A permit is required to fish here. Please note the new regulations for 2013: a daily bag limit of three largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, with 2 less than 14 inches

St. Johns senior Craig Klausing lays down a sacrifice bunt in the 2nd inning Friday night, moving Clay Courtney to second base. The host Jays went on to a 7-4 victory. (Delphos Herald/Tom Morris) a base and a passed ball put Courtney at third, from where he scored on Ben Wrasmans RBI liner to left. Geise grounded a single into center to send Wrasman to third and the batter took second on the throw to third. Metzger (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, 3 stolen bases) knocked both in with a slice to center. He stole a pair of bases, one on a strikeout, and scored as Ryan Buescher grounded a single into left. The Flyers got a leadoff walk to Austin Albers in the third. The Jays sought to add to their lead in the bottom half as Gage Seffernick walked and Courtney got aboard in beating out a bunt, with an error sending both runners up a base. An out later, Wrasman walked to juice the sacks. Geise then bounced into an inning-ending twin-killing. The guests reduced their deficit to 5-1 in the fourth but a big defensive play prevented it from being more. Homan got aboard via an error and Peyton Kramer lined a 1-out single to right. Blake Benton forced Homan at third but an error on the play allowed Kramer to hustle home and put the batter at second. Griesdorn blooped a hit to center but Andrew Metzger came up throwing and nailed Benton at home. Metzger was hit by a pitch to commence the fourth and stole second but got no farther. The visitors doubled their score in the fifth on an error, a wild pitch and a pair of hits, including an infield hit to short by J. Riethman to plate Aaron Nietfeld, with an error on the play allowing the batter to reach second. D. Riethman bounced to third and third sacker Craig Klausing caught J. Riethman too far off second, with a wellexecuted resultant rundown nailing the runner. The Jays played small-ball to perfection to get a run in the home fifth. Seffernick walked, moved up on a Courtney sacrifice and a wild pitch. Klausing walked. He took off for second and drew the throw, with Seffernick sliding in to home; Klausing got into a rundown between second and third and was ruled safe at third on interference. However, he didnt score. The Flyers got within 6-4 in the sixth on a pair of errors and three hits, including a basesloaded run-scoring liner to left by Nietfeld. J. Riethman also brought Benton in on a basesloaded sacrifice fly. The Jays scored an insur-

Zimmermann blanks Reds on 1 hit in Nats 1-0 win

WASHINGTON (AP) Jordan Zimmermann was terrific in his second complete game of the season and the Washington Nationals limited the Cincinnati Reds to one hit for the second straight game in a 1-0 victory on Friday night. Zimmermann (4-1) struck out four and walked one while improving to 3-0 with a 1.36 ERA in five career games against Cincinnati. The right-hander needed only 91 pitches to record his third career complete game. It was the first time the Reds managed just one hit in consecutive games since July 5-6, 1900, against Brooklyn, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau that the team provided. The Houston Astros from Sept. 14-15, 2008, were the last team with such a streak. Xavier Paul led off the third with a single to center for Cincinnatis only hit

By Dave Boninsegna The Delphos Herald zsportslive@yahoo.com COLUMBUS GROVE Key hitting and one big inning was all the Columbus Grove baseball team needed as they scored five runs in their Putnam County League tilt against the Kalida Wildcats as the host overcame a 2-0 deficit to score five runs in the fourth to grab their 10th consecutive win with a 5-2 triumph over the Wildcats. Both starting pitchers: Trey Roney for the Bulldogs and Austin Swift for the Wildcats; went the distance. Roney struck out six and walked none, while the freshman Swift got the loss as four of the five runs scored were earned; he walked four and struck out one. Kalida scored two runs in the top of the first. Swift got the rally started with a 1-out single Neil Recker followed with a double. A batter later, Kyle Kehres reached on an error to score Swift. Rob Kleman followed with a groundout to short that brought home Recker to give the guests a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs threatened in their half of the first, loading the bases when Matt Jay walked for the first of three times in the game. Roney and Brady Shafer both singled but Swift got Cody Griffith to fly out to center. The hosts struck for five in the fourth inning when Griffith led off with a double. Josh Verhoff reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Swift balked, scoring Griffith. The wheels began to fall off for Swift. Trent Vorst followed by reaching on a miscue and Mason Smith singled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. It was back to the top of the batting order for the Bulldogs and birthday boy Blake Hoffman, who was promptly hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brandon Benroth (2-4, 3 RBIs). The shortstop took a 1-1 pitch and drove it into the gap in left field, clearing the bases and giving the Bulldogs a 5-2 advantage with still nobody out. It appeared things were going to get worse for the visitors as Jay came to the plate and walked for the

Indians-Royals game rained out

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Just what the Kansas City Royals did not need was another off day. The Royals and Cleveland Indians were rained out Friday night with the game postponed about 30 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. The game has been rescheduled as a doubleheader for Sunday, the first day-night doubleheader in Kauffman Stadium history. The Royals have had six days off in the past 12 days. They had regular scheduled days off on April 15, 18 and Monday, games rained out Tuesday and Friday and a game postponed April 19 when they were in Boston, which was shut down for the manhunt for the marathon bombers. While the Royals lead the American League Central with an 11-8 record, they have found it difficult to get into a regular rhythm. Holland has retired the side in his past four outings, striking out nine of 12 batters, but other relievers have seen scant work. Luke Hochevar has been limited to four appearances and 5 1/3 innings this season. Left-hander Bruce Chen pitched Sunday for the first time in 11 games and hasnt pitched since. When J.C.

third time but Swift settled down and got his opposite number in Roney to hit into a double play and Shafer to follow with a weak grounder to first to end the inning. From there, the pitchers duel ensued. Roney had retired 10 in a row before the Wildcats put up a threat in the fifth. Adam Knueve singled but was out on a Randy Zeller fielders choice. Brent Hovest singled Zeller to third but Swift stuck out to end the inning. On the other side, Swift had calmed the Bulldog bats, setting down six batters in a row in the fifth and sixth frames. Both teams return to doubleheader action this morning: Grove at New Riegel (10 a.m.) and Kalida at Patrick Henry (11 a.m.).

off Zimmermann. The other baserunners came when Todd Frazier reached on an error by first baseman Adam LaRoche in the fifth and Corky Miller walked in the eighth. Washington won the first game of the series when Gio Gonzalez pitched eight innings of one-hit ball in an 8-1 victory on Thursday night. Joey Votto homered for Cincinnatis only hit in this one. Homer Bailey (1-2) was nearly as good as Zimmermann, pitching seven crisp innings for the Reds. He allowed one run and six hits, struck out six and walked none. The Nationals only run came in the third. Bryce Harper tripled to right and scored on Jayson Werths single to right. That was enough for Zimmermann, who is 8-0 with a 3.02 ERA in his last 14 regular-season home starts.

Gutierrez worked two hitless innings Wednesday at Detroit, it was his first appearance since April 12. After a 4-3 trip to Atlanta, Boston and Detroit, the Royals returned home Friday for a 10-game homestand, but that was delayed a day. The Indians, too, have had their share of rain outs. This was the second Indians rainout in four games and their fourth this season. They also had an off-day Thursday and have played only once in the past three days. One advantage of not playing is that its less games that Michael Bourn will have to miss. Hes been on the disabled list since April 17 retroactive two days earlier, with a lacerated right index finger. Hes eligible to come off the DL on Tuesday. Bourn wasnt sure when hed be ready as the stitches just came out on Thursday. The Friday probable starters, Indians left-hander Scott Kazmir and Royals right-hander Ervin Santana will start Saturday. Indians right-hander Justin Masterson and Royals righthander Jeremy Guthrie will start the first game Sunday. Neither club has announced the starter for the second game Sunday.

Hamlin awaiting clearance, pondering surgery

The Associated Press RICHMOND, Va. Denny Hamlin wishes he didnt need medical clearance to race. The 32-year-old NASCAR star drove himself to Richmond International Raceway on Thursday but was begrudgingly preparing for another weekend watching someone else drive his familiar No. 11 Toyota. At his hometown track, that was doubly disappointing because the weekend kicked off with two races on Thursday night, including the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown to benefit Hamlins charitable foundation. Id rather just do it, Hamlin said about getting back in the race car. Honestly, I know everyone is trying to protect me from myself but I would have raced at Martinsville two weeks ago. Hamlin wasnt cleared to return, however, after a visit Wednesday to Dr. Jerry Petty of Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates and telephone consultations with others. Much of the phone call sounded like a foreign language, Hamlin said, though he did pick up enough to understand things are inexact with injuries such as his and recovery times. Some kind of in-plate is not healing the way that they wanted it and thats what they wanted in order to clear me, explained Hamlin, who grew up within 30 minutes of RIR. Really, that was their determining factor and, obviously, my injury is very, very hard because there is no exact science to the risk. No one knows what the risk will be if I race this week or if I race two weeks from now. Hamlin already deals with chronic pain caused by bulging discs in his back and says hed have no trouble climbing in an out of a window to get in the car. He tentatively plans to do that next weekend at Talladega, where his goal is to start the race to begin collecting critical driver points, then climb out at the first opportunity and turn the car over to a relief driver. Thats just a short-term fix, though, and Hamlin sees the point of no return not far in the distance. After Talladega, the series moves to Darlington where starting and relinquishing the car would be difficult to do without losing several laps, making the idea of writing off the season appear ever more sensible. Hamlin is clinging to the idea that if he misses a handful of races, his team could accumulate enough points in the races he does make to still gain one of the 12 spots in the 10-race championship run. With each race he misses, though, that become a much less likely scenario and one that could cause him to decide to have back surgery planned for the offseason sooner with an eye toward a healthier 2014. I think if this goes past Darlington, then I dont know what the chances of us making the Chase are even if we were to race this weekend, race next weekend or the one after, he added. Obviously, if it goes past Darlington, our chances are crushed even harder. Surgery would have a recovery period of about six weeks, Hamlin explained, leaving open the possibility he could return to run a few races at the end of the season but without championship aspirations. Then again, Hamlin joked a day after Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth received harsh penalties from NASCAR, if everyone keeps getting these penalties, Im going to be the points leader soon. NASCAR defends penalties against Matt Kenseth: NASCAR is defending the severity of the penalties levied against Joe Gibbs Racing for an illegal part in Matt Kenseths engine. NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton says series officials arent charged with determining intent or if the infraction provided an advantage. Joe Gibbs Racing was stripped of everything except the trophy from Kenseths victory Sunday at Kansas because one connecting rod in his engine did not meet the minimum weight requirement. Kenseth was docked 50 points, including the bonus points for the win. Crew chief Jason Ratcliff was fined $200,000 and Ratcliff and car owner Joe Gibbs were suspended six races. The engine came from Toyota Racing Development, which took responsibility for the mistake. Pemberton adds NASCAR wont punish outside vendors because teams are responsible for their cars. Running well helps Clint Bowyer shine CHARLOTTE, N.C. Always popular among his peers, Clint Bowyer over the last two seasons has slowly become one of NASCARs newest stars. Part of it is the atmosphere at Michael Waltrip Racing, the team he joined before the 2012 season, and the partnership with 5-Hour Energy, a product that seems made specifically for Bowyer. Ive been able to kind of come into my own and be my own self a little bit more since going to MWR, Bowyer said. The sponsor, everything, just all of my surroundings kind of enabled me to be who I am, so it probably comes out a little bit more. But no amount of witty one-liners or sharp comebacks can keep the spotlight on a driver. There must be on-track results and Bowyers gotten that since moving to MWR after six Sprint Cup seasons with Richard Childress Racing. Although Bowyer made the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship three times with RCR, his first season with Waltrip was his breakout year. Bowyer won three races and finished second in the standings, both career bests. And thats what has made Bowyer and his larger-thanlife personality more noticeable in NASCAR. He is hoping for his breakout performance of 2013 this weekend at Richmond, where he won last September and has a strong record. Bowyer has eight top-10 finishes in 14 starts at Richmond. He goes into the race ranked eighth in the standings with four top-10 finishes this year but only one lap led. Hes hoping to turn that around tonight. Once you win at a race track, every time you go back there after that, theres always something you can carry in, and thats confidence, Bowyer added. We had a solid run, a top-5 run at Kansas at home and a little extra boost of confidence and momentum rolling into a track thats really good for me. So yes, absolutely. Im looking forward to getting to Richmond; I know the boys are and theyre going to have the racer set on full for me. Daytona, Talladega reenforcing crossover gates NASCARs two fastest tracks are re-enforcing crossover gates in the wake of the Feb. 23 accident at Daytona International Speedway that injured nearly 30 spectators. Daytona and Talladega Superspeedway announced that the high-banked tracks are installing additional cables at the crossover gates, which allow fans to move between the grandstands and the infield before and after races. The tracks also are adding supplemental tethers between the gate frame and support posts. Were pleased with the solution that were implementing for Talladega and Daytona but fan safety is an ongoing process and were going to continue to look at the fan experience across all our venues for future improvement as we continue through, Daytona President Joie Chitwood told reporters. One of the eight gates at Daytona was where rookie Kyle Larson crashed on the final lap of the secondtier race the day before the Daytona 500. Larsons car went airborne, slammed into the fence and spewed debris into the stands. Larson was unharmed. Dozens of fans were taken to hospitals for treatment, including one who was hit by a tire. Daytona spent hours repairing the fence before the 500. After the race, the track hired a structural engineering firm to review the fence and propose improvements. NASCAR also was involved in the process. We believe we do everything we can to make this sport as safe as possible for our fans and again, believe our history speaks to that fact, said Steve ODonnell,

Bass should be hitting black jigs with blue pork in at 5-7 feet. In the spillway, plenty of saugeyes can be caught on chartreuse twisters and crappie are hitting minnows. White bass are in the creeks; try minnows and shiny spinners. Tawawa Lake (Shelby County) - Trout are being taken on white roostertails. Anglers are also having success using minnows under a bobber. Davis Lake (Auglaize County) - Try for recentlystocked trout with redworms. OHIO RIVER Cincinnati Area (Hamilton County) - Water temperatures have fluctuated quite a bit in the past month but as waters begin to warm, catfishing should turn on; try any legal live or cut bait. Many anglers prefer really stinky baits regardless of the type and others use hot dogs as a secret weapon. Meldahl Dam (Clermont County) - Hybridstripers are being taken on white or smokin shad flukes with 3/8 jig-head. Bellville Dam Tailwater Area - Fishing for hybrid-striped bass should prove successful now in the tail-water section; try minnows, crankbaits, or twister tails in white, gray, or chartreuse. Crappie can also be caught now on the Ohio side (lock chamber side) of the tail water. Slack or slowmoving water will hold feeding fish; a slip bobber and minnow is a hard combination to bear. Catfish will also start biting on a variety of baits, including nightcrawlers and cut bait, such as shad and skip jack; try near the dam and along the walkway. As the water temperature starts to increase, fishing for sauger and walleye may slow down but both can still be caught on jigs with twister tails tipped with minnows. LAKE ERIE Regulations to Remember: The daily bag limit for walleye on Ohio waters of Lake Erie through Tuesday is 4 fish per angler. On Wednesday, the daily bag limit increases to 6. The minimum size limit is 15 inches. The daily bag limit for yellow perch is 30 fish per angler on all Ohio waters of Lake Erie. The trout and salmon daily bag limit is 2 fish per angler through May 15, increasing to 5 May 16-August 31. The minimum size limit is 12 inches. The black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) daily bag limit is 5 fish per angler with a 14-inch minimum size limit ends Tuesday and then closes to possession (no harvest) through June 28. NASCARs senior vice president of racing operations. ODonnell said NASCARs main focus has been on what happened to Larsons car once it hit the fence. The front end of the car sheared off and large chunks of debris, including a tire, landed in the stands. ODonnell noted Larsons car and another one are still being housed at the research and development center in Concord, N.C., where safety experts inspected the cars in hopes of determining potential improvements that might include better keeping cars intact during crashes. Other tracks could see improvements, too. Even as we wrap up this specific investigation as it relates to Daytona, our work will continue, ODonnell added. This was Phase I, to get ready for Talladega and Daytona. Were looking closely at all tracks for NASCAR races and well make recommendations that we think are in the best interest of safety as we move forward and as weve done for the past 65 years. Chitwood declined to say whether eliminating the crossover gates was considered. Previous accidents in which drivers hit crossover gates were severe but the gates were in the wall and not the fence for Mike Harmons accident at Bristol in 2002 and Michael Waltrips at the same track in 1990. Hurt hand: Tony Kanaan literally added injury to insult in the closing laps at Long Beach. Kanaan was headed toward a top-5 finish when contact with Oriol Servia sent his car into a barrier with two laps remaining in Sundays race. He was visibly upset at his ruined day, which ended with him watching the last lap from outside of his car. He was credited with a 20thplace finish. Then Kanaan realized there was something wrong with his hand. He made a trip to IndyCars care center but nothing could be diagnosed on site. Kanaan flew home after the race, joking painkillers are my friend as he waited for the extent of the injury to be determined. Kanaan eventually posted his X-ray on Twitter with an announcement that hell be fine in time for next weeks race in his native Brazil.

Helping the brain use alternative fuel may ease symptoms of Alzheimers
(BPT) - Whether a patient faces a simple health problem, such as a head cold, or one as complex as Alzheimers disease, relieving the symptoms is often as important as resolving the issue itself. Yet for the more than 5 million Americans affected by Alzheimers, treating the symptoms is even more vital. Some of the early signs of Alzheimers include memory loss that disrupts daily life, mood and personality changes, and difficulty solving otherwise simple daily tasks. Alzheimers disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Alzheimers Association. Of the top 10 causes of death, it is the only one for which there is no cure or preventive measure. However, research suggests that addressing one early facet of the disease - decreased blood sugar in brain cells, also known as diminished cerebral glucose metabolism (DCGM) - may help relieve symptoms for certain people with mild to moderate Alzheimers. In a healthy brain, glucose is the primary energy source. A brain affected by Alzheimers doesnt process glucose into energy as efficiently as a healthy brain. Unlike other cells in the body that can metabolize fats as fuel, brain cells rely on glucose (sugar) for their primary energy source, says Dr. Richard S. Isaacson, associate professor of clinical neurology and vice chair of education at the University of Miamis Miller School of Medicine. One aspect of Alzheimers is that it hinders the brains ability to use glucose, and this significantly affects brain function. DCGM is an early feature of Alzheimers disease, represented by region-specific declines in brain glucose - or energy - metabolism, Isaacson says. DCGM correlates with both the cognitive decline and the pathology associated with Alzheimers. Research suggests that addressing DCGM may help mitigate symptoms for some patients. Providing brain cells with an alternative energy source may help ease the effects of DCGM, while enhancing memory and cognitive function in Alzheimers patients. One prescription-only medical food aims at helping Alzheimers patients by addressing DCGM Axona by Accera, Inc. The easy-to-mix, once-daily drink is currently the only prescription therapy for patients with mild to moderate Alzheimers that addresses the link between the brains inability to process and use glucose with the degenerative symptoms of Alzheimers by providing the brain with an alternative energy source. The liver digests and metabolizes Axona to produce the naturally occurring compounds ketones- that the brain can use as an alternative energy source. Patients or caregivers mix the powder with other liquids or foods and take it once a day in conjunction with commonly prescribed Alzheimers medications. More research is necessary to determine the exact reasons why DCGM can have profound effects on cognition over the long term, Isaacson says. When blood glucose drops rapidly, significant decline in cognitive function occurs and may be accompanied by confusion, coma and even brain death. While Axona is not a

cure for Alzheimers, it can help some patients mitigate the symptoms of the disease. Doctors and caregivers of patients using Axona have reported patients appear more alert and engaged in daily activities and conversations. If you or a family member experience symptoms such as poor short-term memory,

changes in behavior and difficulty with language, see your doctor for a full evaluation, says Isaacson. To learn more about Alzheimers disease, visit www.alz.org, the website of the Alzheimers Association. For more information on DCGM and Axona, visit www. about-axona.com.

(Continued from Page 3) the east side of the state from Cleveland to the Ohio River and on the west side of the state from the Ohio River to Waterville. Grand Rapids was badly flooded. Even Lima was flooded. The Findlay Police Captain McGowan was drowned in the Blanchard while attempting to rescue residents. A relief train from Delphos was sent to Cloverdale on Thursday. Two hundred loaves of bread and a large amount of canned goods was placed upon the relief train by E. L. Stallkamp. Drs. Hartnagel, Mauk and Hixson also accompanied the train to provide medical assistance if need. Fortunately the people of the village were in good health. They found the people of the town had suffered greatly from the flood but were in no danger. The entire town had been submerged and flood waters entered nearly every home and business place. In some instances water was four to five feet deep on the floors. On Thursday the water was still 18 inches deep on the main street in the section south of the Findlay, Ft. Wayne and Western Railroad. During the flood many residents of the town were housed in the Catholic Church and in the school. The water had receded enough for some people to enter their homes. They started fires to their homes and were cooking food to aid others who could not reach their homes. The Cloverdale area suf-

fered a considerable loss of livestock. Some farmers drove their livestock to the highest part of the railroad right-of-way. Some drove their animals into box cars. One farmer said three of his horses drowned and four were missing. He also lost 30 hogs, 18 sheep and some cattle. The residents of Cloverdale were very grateful to the relief party and requested them to return. All the neighboring towns of Delphos were flooded, including Van Wert and Middle Point. In Ottawa Ed McGreevy was one of many who had narrow escapes. He was in Rampes Saloon and had to remain on top of the billiard table for 36 hours, being unable to be heard in shouting for help. Oakwood suffered the severest of nearby towns -all the people of that town had to leave. Continental and the farmers took care of them. The Nickel Plate Railroad run an engine and caboose between the two towns almost hourly. An experienced brood sow landed on top of a furniture store in Oakwood, remained there for two days and was saved. The town of Paulding sent a car load of food and $800.00 in money to Oakwood. Now for a little humor after all those tales of woe! The Wieging boys of Fort Jennings told of Billie Boehmer and Ike Fosnaught taking a boat ride on the swollen Auglaize in 1913. Ike told Billie he had never had a boat

ride. Billie was good with a row boat and told Ike to get in. First thing, Ikes hat blew off and he tried to get it. They got into the main current and they had to cross the river with the current and wound up of the southeast side at Bill Suevers house. Suever said they had better stay there until the river dropped some. The two young men stayed at Suevers for three days, and then decided to head home. With that Suever phoned Heinls Bar and told them the boat was coming home. Alex Heinl ran across the street to the shoe shop to get Framz Geier and he got the town band together and went to the river. Then Rabbit Burkmeyer and Speedy Bertling stepped in for Paul Revere and ran down the street opening the doors and shouting the boat is coming in. Rudy and Gilbert Wieging were in the hardware store with their dad. George Brenner said lets go and locked up and headed for the river. Gilbert said he remembers how quiet everything was when they saw the American flag on the front of the boat coming through the trees. The band started playing and some men were shooting their guns, giving them a salute. When the guys got out of the boat, Ike held up the flag and they paraded down the street to Raabes Store and got two bread boxes to stand on and give their speech. Then they moved on to Heinls and Burkies. The Wieging boys were too young to go along to the bar.

Tomorrows Horoscope
By Bernice Bede Osol
SUNDAY, APRIL 28, 2013 There are strong indications that you will form a powerful alliance in the year ahead that could prove to be helpful to your career. The value of this partnership will depend on your ability to keep it confidential. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -- Theres a chance that you could be domineering in a one-onone relationship, which would be counterproductive. Use charm to get what you want. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -Its nice to be helpful, but dont take on so many burdens that it makes you ineffective. When youre bogged down and cant function, you wont do anybody any good. CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- Stick to the plan of a social engagement, instead of trying to make a last-minute change. Your alterations wont add anything of value. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- If youre not careful, you could easily yield to peer pressure and agree to do something that does not serve your best interest. Be firm and stand your ground. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -Just because someone is a colorful talker doesnt mean that he or she is a knowledgeable one. Dont be mesmerized by the flash and totally overlook substance. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) -- The need for instant gratification could cause you to spend your money foolishly. Wait until you find the perfect buy instead of snapping up the first offer you come across. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) -- If you make an impulsive commitment or promise, theres a good chance youll end up regretting it. Be very careful on what or to whom you pledge your word. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) -- If a friend or associate is raring to go, you might be a bit too retiring for him or her. Instead of seeking solitude, get out and try to have fun. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- Youll be eager to hang out with people, yet you might not enjoy being in a large gathering full of new faces. Stick to your familiar inner circle. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) -- There is nothing wrong with being a little competitive, provided its for a reasonable, constructive purpose. Today, however, your urge to win might come from a negative source. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) -- Youll be susceptible to high-risk proposals that promise something for nothing. Look at all too good to be true deals with a gimlet eye. ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- Youll enjoy conversational exchanges as long as theyre not centered on personal or weighty subjects. Dont allow yourself to get drawn into emotional repartee. MONDAY, APRIL 29, 2013 A number of important endeavors that youve labored hard on could finally come to fruition in the year ahead. Although they might have taken a while, these successes will now happen rapidly. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -- Your optimistic disposition makes you a dominating force to be reckoned with. Anybody who dares try to upstage you is destined for second place. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -- Your detective abilities will be unusually sharp. If you happen to be working on something that calls for fact-finding, success is inevitable. CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- The secret to dealing with others successfully is to make each and every person feel special, regardless of whether that person has done anything for you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- As long as your goals are well defined, you shouldnt have any problems fulfilling them. Knowing what you want goes a long way to helping you get it. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -You are apt to do better than most in matters that involve pronounced elements of chance. Your luck will be running high, so put it to use. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) -Make a goal youve been striving hard to attain your primary focus. It can easily become a reality if you relegate everything else to secondary status. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) -This could be an unusually productive day for you, as long as you dont put limits on your activities. Youre even capable of juggling several jobs simultaneously. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23Dec. 21) -- Because conditions are exceptionally favorable, youre likely to be lucky, especially in your financial affairs. Focus on money matters. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- Let the adage If you want something done right, do it yourself, govern your actions. If you delegate work, the results will be inferior. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) -- Something you want badly is much closer than you think. Dont allow any kind of setback to discourage you, because things will ultimately work out. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) -- Your friends will have an enormous influence over your outlook and attitude. If possible, choose companions who have lots of positive mental and physical energy. ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- You shouldnt have trouble advancing your prestige and profits. Strike while the stars are in alignment and things are going your way.
