The outside surface temperature of a pipe with radius 0.1 m is 400 K. The pipe is losing heat to atmosphere, which is at 303 K. The film heat transfer coefficient is 10 W/m2 K. To reduce the rate of heat loss, the pipe is insulated by a 40 mm thick layer of asbestos (k = 0.5 W/m K). Determine the percentage reduction in the rate of heat loss. Compute the heat loss per m2 of surface area for a furnace wall, 300 mm thick. The inner and outer surface temperatures are 593 K and 311 K respectively. The variation in thermal conductivity, W/(m.K) with temperature in K is given by the following relation: k = 0.003T 10-6T2. Write physical significance of five dimensionless groups used in heat transfer. Cold fluid is flowing through the heat exchanger at a rate of 16 m3/h. It enters the heat exchanger at 30 0C and leaves at 56 0C. The hot fluid enters the heat exchanger at the rate of 20 m3/h at a temperature of 1180C. Determine the area of heat transfer required if the flow is counter current and overall heat transfer coefficient be 4290 W/(m.K) (Data: Density of cold fluid = 1000 kg/m3, Density of hot fluid = 960 kg/m3 Specific heat of cold fluid = 4187 J/(kg.K), specific heat of hot fluid = 2930 J/(kg.K). Define evaporator capacity and evaporator economy. An evaporator is to be fed with 5000 kg/hr of solution containing 10% of solute by weight. The feed at 400 C is to be concentrated to a solution containing 40% by weight of solute under an absolute pressure of 1.03 kg/cm2. Steam is available at an absolute pressure of 3 atm (saturation temperature 1340 C). The overall heat transfer coefficient is 1500 kcal/hr.m2. 0 C. Calculate the heat transfer area that should be provided and the steam requirement.
