SILENT PREDATOR by TONY PARK
This novel tells the story of a detective who works for the
British protection service who is assigned to protect a gov-
ernment minister while on a visit to South Africa. The min-
ister is abducted and the detective, knowing his career is
on the line, hunts for the kidnappers against the orders of
his superiors. The descriptive passages of the South Afri-
can bush and animals are as fascinating as the hunt for the
minister and make this an exciting story - thrilling to the last
page.

Ararua Pony Club had a successful One Day
Event on January 26th. This is the club’s major
fundraiser for the year and it is a popular event. It
takes many, many hours of work and we thank all
who helped make it such a successful day.
There was also the Pony Clubs’ show jumping
event held at Cambridge recently and Ararua
(and BBK) was ably represented by Racquelle
Gibberd and Katherine Ball.
Ararua rider Jason Ball represented Northland
Pony Club in the National Zone Games in
January.
Pony Club rallies are held every fortnight from
Wednesday 11th February at 5.00pm at the A and
P Grounds in Paparoa. We have riders of all lev-
els. Come along and see if Pony Club is for you.
New members are always welcome.

MAUNGATUROTO BUSINESS HOUSE

SQUASH
The Business House comp will be starting on Thurs March
12th. Thank you to teams that have already registered. It’s
not too late to enter a team or just as an individual (we will
find a team for you). We need all ranges of ability, begin-
ners most welcome. Teams will comprise four players;
each team needs to have a beginner or junior. Games will
be Yankee scoring with an emphasis on fun in a social at-
mosphere. Each team fee will be $40 (teams can be spon-
sored).
So come along and join in, if you have always wanted to
have a go at squash now is your chance before the season
starts.

Readiness for the Disasters in this life .
For every disaster, we seek explanations. Why death, why
famine, why tsunami, why war, and lately, why the Bush-
fires of Victoria?
Pastor Danny Nalliah, head of the Pentecostal church in
Australian is quoted on the “Australian” as claiming “ that
Victoria's burned and broken townships were the result of a
vengeful God getting his own back on sinners, who allowed
new abortion laws into the state.”
This certainly raises a public outcry, against, not just the
Pastor and his church but also against God. Other Chris-
tians, in objection also come up with their own biblical ex-
planation to disaster. I am not about to lend myself in any
of these categories. God needs no defense and therefore I
cannot go there too.
What I want to say here is whatever form disaster takes, it
is always Death that makes it so terrible. Like some said
after the fire, “I am just happy that I am alive”. Loss of prop-
erty we so invest our time and resources into, is not of the
same value as the person’s life. It is a person alive to en-
joy what he/she has that gives worth to the things we invest
in.
In his great wisdom Solomon sees it this way:

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the
sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing
after the wind. 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under
the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes
after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man
or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into
which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This
too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over
all my toilsome labour under the sun. 21 For a man may do
his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he
must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for
it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What
does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with
which he labours under the sun? 23 All his days his work is
pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This
too is meaningless. (Ecclesiastes 2: 17- 23).
Disasters, like sickness, are keys Death uses to open its
doors to us at times we least expect and when we do think
it is nowhere near. We can toil for so much wealth, only
never to leave them behind and finding no satisfaction in
them. According to Solomon, (verses 24-26) It is in God
that we enjoy what we work for and it is when we please
Him that he gives us wisdom and knowledge and happi-
ness in our labour.

A man can do nothing better than to eat and
drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I
see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him,
who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the man who
pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and
happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of
gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to
the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, Pastor Meshach Adomea
a chasing after the wind.
And may I add, that when Death knocks and we have to go
willingly or unwillingly, knowingly or unknowingly, life has
been worth living (long or short) and that eternity awaits us

with God, not without Him.
On this side of life God does look upon us with mercy and
forebearance, seeing the work of the Cross of Jesus. For
as Peter says, God “not wanting anyone to perish but all
should come to repentance.”. Death in this life is the end
whatever we think of God and the way God sees us
through the eye of the cross. After death, judgement for all,
those found and not found, written in the Book of Life.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some un-
derstand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting any-
one to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Hebrews 9:27 Just as man is destined to die once, and
after that to face judgment,
Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, great and small,
standing before the throne, and books were opened. An-
other book was opened, which is the book of life. The
dead were judged according to what they had done as re-
corded in the books.
Revelation 20:15 If anyone's name was not found written
in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
It is sad for those who find no joy in their lives while alive
only to find at death there is greater misery awaiting them,
all because they reject such great salvation offered by
Christ in Himself.
Hebrews 2:3
how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?
This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord,
was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
Be well prepared for all kinds of disasters. Be right with
yourself in Christ so that you find happiness in life here and
now and to face Death knowing that it is a door to life with
God outside this sinful world. For it is Sin that brings death
to everyone.
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world
through one man, and death through sin, and in this way
death came to all men, because all sinned—
But, no story ends in sin and death. The passage continues
for you and me - that in Christ there is Life forevermore,
whatever happens.

Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was
condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of
righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.

For just as through the disobedience of the one man the
many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of
the one man the many will be made righteous.

The law was added so that the trespass might increase.
But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21so
that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign
through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus
Christ our Lord.

Otamatea Repertory Theatre The new green has to be ready to play on

Again, we were well represented by Terry

McMahon singles, Naira Vaney and Pauline
McMurchy pairs, Rex Roadley, Shirley Bird
and John Hammond triples. The team won
eight of their twelve games to come third
behind a crack Kensington team and Man-
gawhai. This was a well- supported tourna-
ment with twelve teams of six taking part
showing that Northland bowls at junior level
is in very good heart.

Apart from some junior and handicap events

the men have completed their championships
for the season. The fours with four teams
and the triples with five teams were proba-
bly the biggest fields for some years but
with twenty nine members it could quite eas-
ily have been more.

The triples were won by Kevin Robinson,

Terry McMahon and Kevin Flower while the
fours were won by the same three with the
addition of Brett Robinson. Well done guys,
you should represent the club well when the
champion of champions are played later on.
The junior singles were won by Rex Road-
ley from first year player Ray Hynes. Again
a disappointing number of entries considering
we have ten eligible men.

Next tournament on the club’s program is

the Paton Pairs on Monday 16th March. Club
members are asked to sort themselves out
and to advertise when playing at other clubs.
The day after the Paton Pairs, 17th March,
the club starts its green replacement pro-
gramme with the replacement of the B
green with a new Astroturf surface. This
should be a better playing surface and won’t
mark the bowls. If anyone has a use for the
old carpet call Albie or Ron as it is avail-
able to take away.
