A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is the 2nd lesson in a unit about where we live. This lesson will compare and contrast various physical features in different regions. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 82-85. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: at grade level Grouping: whole group instruction, table groups for picture sorts, individual or partner work on compare/contrast sheets C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin 1st grade social studies textbook: School and Family, pages 82-85 Social studies journals Pencils Crayons/colored pencils Compare and contrast chart Various pictures of plains, mountains, rivers and lakes D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G6.1.1- Sort and group pictures displaying geographic features, e.g. forest, deserts, and lake regions

Student-Friendly Standards I will be able to compare and contrast different geographic and physical regions such as mountains, plains, lakes and rivers.

E. Procedure: 1. Introduce lesson to students by asking them what kind of land we live near. Is it hilly or flat? Are there any bodies of water near us? What kind? 2. Allow students to table talk and discuss 3. Ask 1 student from each table to share what their table talked about 4. Introduce vocabulary words to students who will write the words and definitions in the vocabulary section of their social studies journals (mountain, plain river, lakedefinitions are on page T82) 5. Have 1 student from each table get a bag of picture cards for their table 6. Students will sort picture cards into groups with like characteristics

Pictures should be sorted into groups of rivers, lakes, mountains, and plains Students can use their textbooks as a reference when sorting pictures

7. Have 1 student from each table explain how they sorted their picture cards 8. Review with whole group how cards should be grouped together and why 9. 10. CLOSURE: Students will write in their social studies journals: o o How are rivers and lakes similar and different? Explain what plains are used for.

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Informal assessment through various discussions, picture sorts and journal entries will be used to measure student understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know students understand this concept when they can properly define and identify mountains, rivers, lakes and plains through pictures and on a map. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think this whole lesson will be easy to teach. Most students should know what most of these physical features look like and have been exposed to them before. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging part about this lesson to teach is going to be teaching students how to locate these features on a flat map where the pictures wont be as evident as they will be used to. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

We will continually be looking at features on a map and these concepts will always be reviewed in further lessons. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I will pull small groups and re-teach the lesson to students who dont understand the concept. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I dont believe that any part of the lesson would need to be changed. I might change my mind about this after I teach this lesson, but as of now, I think this is a good lesson to teach students about different physical features. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? There wasnt really a difficult part of writing this lesson. I think the lesson as easy or organize and write.
