Maecans and Big Talk: Compare and Contract The Maecenas by author Phillis Wheatley and Big talk by Zora Neale Hurston both have similarities in the sense that they use old, archaic style colloquial African words which make the poem hold much more merit when read. For example in the first stanza words such as oer, lo, and ye are all descriptive words which make the piece of writing relevant and authentic to the writing because it was words that were actually used during it time period. Not only does it give authenticity, it also enablers the read to be succinct with what is being read because he can relate to the character in its true form by understanding these words. Similarly, Big Talk by Zora Neale Huston also displays words such as, Nex, Nothin, and im tuh all give the reader the sense of my the exact time period the piece of work is taking place without the being given an exact date. The similarities in the use of archaic and colloquial style African words make both piece of words similar by attribute and present the reader with the insight to pick up on such words, as I have done. Also in both the pieces, the author are keen to present a point of view to the reader that is humorous and uplifting. In Big Talk, the author depicts the conversation of two slaves who are discussing matter which occurred with their master and carefully illustrating the event in a descriptive and humorous manner. The author, Hurston is very keen and insightful in her writing when she describes how the Masta gets to punish both of the slaves. Finally, there are also some stark difference such as the both piece display a distinct content. For example the main idea behind Big talk is a narrative style piece where it describes the actions of two slaves, while The Maecenas is a poetic lyric like piece which talk about redemption and the ability to be courageous and stand up against adversity. Also the use of repetition and describing the type of piece each work is. The Maecenas is something found in works like old African literature, while Big talk is more of a Folk tale described and retold as narrative in context. Nevertheless, we see that that Big Talk and Maecenas illustrate and entertain two different idea; one is determination, over-coming adversity and rise to prominence (Maecenas), while the other is of fold tale retelling of two African slaves which depict and illustrates the method of punishment and lifestyle which actually took place in that period of time which is very significant to understand in the long run history of slavery.
