Heyward murder
– one son cleared, one to stand trial

THE eldest son of Glenys
Heyward, whose body was
found at a remote Victorian
property in 2007, was
cleared of murder by the
state’s Chief Magistrate in
Adelaide yesterday.
Neil Heyward, 53, his
sons Thomas, 26, and
Matthew, 21, were charged
with murder, along with
their former farmhand
Jeremy Adam Minter, 27.
Chief Magistrate
Elizabeth Bolton ruled
there was no case for
Thomas Heyward to
answer.
But she ruled his
younger brother Matthew,
along with Neil Heyward
and Minter, would face
trial.
The three men will
appear in the Supreme
Court in either Mount
Gambier or Adelaide, pos-
sibly later this year.
Ms Bolton suppressed
her reasons for both deci-
sions.
All of the accused
pleaded not guilty to
murder.
Neil Heyward and
Minter continue to be
remanded in custody,
while Matthew Heyward
remains on bail in the
community.

prosecutors revealed for
the first time that Ms
Heyward was allegedly
physically murdered by
her de facto partner Neil
Heyward at a remote
property in Victoria.
Prosecutor Mark
Norman alleged there
were “108 references”
which would lead a jury
to find the two brothers
were participants in a plot
to kill their mother.
But lawyers acting for
the accused argued their
clients had no case to
answer, claiming much of
the prosecution’s evidence
was circumstantial and
based on suspicion.
A diary extract was part
of the prosecutor’s submis-
sion to the court, in which
murder victim Glenys
Heyward wrote: “Do you
know what it is like to
have your own flesh and
blood tell you that they are
going to kill you?”
Mr Norman said at
the committal that Ms
Heyward’s $2m claim
against the family farm at
Mount Schank was a bid
to take control of her life,
seek independence and go
into hiding.
Ms Heyward went miss-
ing after last being seen in
Mount Gambier on July
23, 2007.
Her body was found by
