5 GROUP B ( Short Answer Type Questions ) Answer any three of the following. 2. 3. 4. 5. What is the effect of groundwater table on bearing capacity of foundation ? What are the causes of development of negative skin friction on piles ? Write a short note on liquifaction of soil. What do you understand by degree of freedom ? Show with sketch, the different degrees of freedom for a block foundation under vibration. 6. A 6 m thich layer of saturated clay is sandwiched between pervious sand layers at top and bottom. For the clay, mv = 25 104 m2 /kN. Find the consolidation settlement if the clay is subjected to an increase of uniform pressure intensity of 80 kPa at the centre of clay layer. 7. Draw a neat labelled sketch for two adjacent underreamed piles of 300 mm shaft diameter having 3 bulbs each, showing all necessary dimensions in the sketch. GROUP C ( Long Answer Type Questions ) Answer any three questions. 8. a) b) What are the limitations of plate load test. Describe briefly the different types of penetration tests used in soil engineering and explain their uses in finding bearing capacity of foundations. c) What are the general requirements for foundation? 9. satisfactory design of machine 5+5+5 3 15 = 45 3 5 = 15

A square footing 2 m 2 m is built on a homogeneous bed of sand of density 19kN/m3 and having an angle of shearing resistance of 38. The depth of the base of the footing is 08m below the ground surface. What is the safe load in kN according to Terzaghi analysis, which can be carried by the footing with a factor of safety of 3against complete shear failure ? Groundwater table exists at great depth. For = 38. Take Nq = 65, N = 80.

10.

6 A group of 16 piles are to be arranged in a square pattern for installing in a clay deposit. Determine the optimum spacing between the piles in terms of diameter for the condition when group capacity considering individual action and block failure becomes equal. Assume = 08. Neglect and bearing.

11.

A gravity retaining wall with a 6 m high vertical back has to retain a cohesionless backfill with horizontal ground surface. The bulk density of the backfill is 165km/m3 and the angle of shearing resistance is 30. The wall is 14 m wide at the top. Determine the minimum base width of the wall for no tension to develop at the base. Also find the factor of safety against sliding assuming the angle of friction between the base of the wall and the foundation soil as 30. The density of the wall material is 20kN/m3 .

12.

A sheet pile wall, anchored at a point 10 m below the top, is to support the sides of an excavation 60 m deep in dry sandy soil having = 35 and = 19 kN/m3 . Assuming free earth support, calculate the depth of penetration of the sheet pile. Detailed solution of cubical equation, if any should be given.
