Third World Newspaper Project: 120 pts.

Directions: As you have seen, fears of mutual nuclear annihilation prevented the United States and Soviet Union from going to war with one another. But that does not mean the Cold War was without conflict: rather than fight each other directly, the two countries played out their spat in the Third World. Across the globe the two nations fought so-called proxy wars that helped shape the development of former European colonies in Asia, Africa and Latin America. In this assignment, you will investigate the impact of the Cold War on the Third World using technology and online research such as databases, archives, newspapers and journal articles. Databases organize many thousands of journal articles, newspapers and primary sources so that they are searchable with a few keystrokes. This project will involve you creating a newspaper that contains documents that illustrate your understanding of the Cold War. Your newspaper must include the following: 1. Newspaper Name 2. Date (a date during the Cold War years). 3. At least 3 illustrations or photographs (1 that you create) that show an event of the Cold War with a caption explaining what the event is. 4. A map that goes along with one of your articles illustrating where the specific event took place. 5. 2 news articles/reports, including a headline, in which you describe 2 important events of the Cold War. You are to include who, what, when, where, significance (why it was important), and how it contributed to Cold War tensions. Each report should be 150-200 words. 6. 1 Letter to the Editor- write about the Cold War showing the fear that a citizen of a certain country might have. What do they feel and why do they feel that way? What is life like for them? What are they concerned about and why? How has the Cold War impacted their country? 7. A list of sources, a bibliography, where you received your information. ______________________________________________________________ Your news articles/reports should be based on any of the following events. You may choose another event, however, it must be approved prior to you writing the article. 1945: Yalta Agreement 1945: Potsdam Conference 1947: Truman Doctrine 1947: Marshall Plan 1948: Berlin Airlift 1949: NATO formed 1950: Korean War begins. 1951: General MacArthur is relieved of command. 1952: U.S. tests first hydrogen bomb in Marshall Islands.
