2012 Annual Byzantine Studies Conference

The Byzantine Studies Conference is an annual forum for the presentation and discussion of papers embodying current research on all aspects of Byzantine history and culture. Two items from University of Michigan collections will be discussed in papers given at the conference: the smaller of two fragments of an early papyrus roll with a later Byzantine codex (Ms. 50). Graduate students giving papers at the Byzantine Studies Conference who do not reside in the area of the conference are entitled to partial reimbursement of travel expenses.

Here is the story of a Seattle born business student turned English major turned interaction designer. I grew up in the suburbs of the Emerald City, nothing more alien to my fingers than a sketchbook and a book of pencils. What did feel natural to my fingers, though, was a set of 88 ivory keys and book of stories. It wasnt until fifteen that I popped open Photoshop 4.0 for the first time on my computer for a school competition, puzzling for ages as to what these so-called layers meant and these clipping masks could accomplish. By the time I graduated from high school in 2010, I had taught myself Illustrator, created a series of infographics at my first technology startup internship, and headed to Ann Arbor armed with vague design skills ready to be sharpened. Now in my junior year at the University of Michigan, Im looking forward to a summer of mindblowing clients at Wolff Olins, a series of side projects that are in progress, and as always, sharing screens and thoughtpower with people I continue to learn from each and every day all around me.

CONCEPT & DESIGN
Because this project is so intimately focused with my personal style and original work, I started out by creating a fun caricature of myself--as Ive seen with graphic designers I love and respect, such as Jessica Hische and Rifle Paper Co. I wanted to create an iconic, playful identity for myself, exemplifying my penchant for bold colors. When I found the customizable font Multicolore by Ivan Filipov on FontFabric, I immediately decided to incorporate its sans serif, blended feel into the rest of my work and especially the titles. Because Multicolore is an extremely unique font, it would be best used for my main logo, but not for body text and headers. So, I chose Gotham Rounded for headers, as it held similar structural elements to Multicolore. To complement these headers, I chose Palatino for the body text as it is an easy to read serif font with many uses. For small scale captions, a rounded serif, Museo was used in a light weight.
