Characterization

Author: Kara Stoltenberg Revision Date of Lesson Plan (if applicable): April 29, 2013 Overall Goal for the Lesson: Students will learn to think critically about the characters in Jack and the Beanstalk, and attribute characteristic traits to each character in the novel, while providing evidence from the book to support each trait.

Description of classroom, grade level, and students: Target audience is 7th grade, ages 13-14, with a wide range of abilities. The class sizes are 25-30 students. Student Objectives for the lesson. (Given a condition, the students will, to what level). Using a list of character traits provided to them, the students will be able to correctly assign traits to the main characters in Jack and the Beanstalk with 80% accuracy. Using the book, students will be able to provide evidence (i.e. a quote) to support each character trait they choose, graded by completion. Length of Lesson: (minutes, number of class periods, or days or weeks needed). One class period, 50 minutes in length. Schedule of Activities: (Break down your activity into a timeline of events. Focus on what students will be doing and what teachers will be doing during each part of the activity.) Each student will be given a computer, copy of the book, characterization traits worksheet, the assignment, and I will have them search for my wikiboard on their computers. They will each have individual headphones and can listen to the podcast at their own speed. I will pass out the handout before they begin listening to the podcast, so that they can work on the worksheet as they go. I will be available for questions and will walk around to ensure students are staying on task. After the students are done, we will have a class

discussion and use the SmartBoard to categorize the character traits each student has come up with. PASS or CC Standards Addressed (Copy and Paste from: http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/default.html) 7.L.1-Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. 7.L.2- Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. PASS Instructional Technology Standards (Copy and Paste from: http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/default.html) Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. Assessments: How will these activities be assessed? (Go back to your objectives, what will the students do? Make sure that each objective is paired to an assessment measure that allows students to show it). Assessment for the first objective will be determined by the worksheet and its completion. Students must correctly assign characteristic traits at 80% accuracy. Assessment for the second objective will be determined by completion. As long as the students have a quote to support each characteristic trait, they will receive full credit. Accommodations: How might the lesson need to be adapted for students with special needs? Students who have a learning disability will be able to work at their own pace and I will be available for extra help if necessary. Students who are visually impaired will be provided with a larger hand out, so they can more easily read it. App to be used for lesson (if applicable): iMovie for the opening of the lesson. Notability if they wish to fill out the worksheets on their iPads.

Materials Needed: Go through each activity and identify what items (both technology and not) are needed to complete this lesson. Include a breakdown according to individual student or student groups. Include materials that need to be created as well. A class set of 30 computers, audacity software, notebook software, headphones, worksheets, copies of Jack and the Beanstalk, and SmartBoard!
