Why I want to Teach

Name of Artifact: Personal Statement Date: March 25, 2013 Course: EDUC 101 Brief Description: For this assignment, I will document the reason I want to be a teacher and give you the characteristics of what makes a good teacher and what I will bring to teaching. Rationale: To document my reasons for teaching standard #5 application of content, I will include why I want to teach, what are effective teaching traits, what are the characteristics of the students I want to teach. I will give you the perspectives on what the characteristic of the community I want to teach in and what I will contribute to the profession of teaching.

Effective Teacher Traits


Knowledge A sound understanding of the fields teaching and learning and your own content area is essential. Students know when you are knowledgeable.
A good teacher has a healthy balance of warmth and strictness and an enthusiasm for being with young people, evidenced by her or his ability to share students interest. Enthusiasm does not mean boisterousness, but teaching requires a presence in the classroom that is both personal and professional.

Alive! Articulate Committed Innovative

A good teacher has good communication skills and expresses herself or himself clearly. This includes having a sense of humor.
A good teacher is dedicated to furthering the learning experiences of young people and fostering a love of learning. A certain amount of selflessness is required.

A good teacher constantly seeks new and exciting ways to interest and engage students in the topic at hand. Novel methods and techniques leave a lasting impression that the teacher has taken the time to prepare for the lesson.
A good teacher is not easily overwhelmed or distressed and has the capacity to be a good listener. At times you will need to repeat lessons or remind students of the classroom rules, not to mention the occasions when you will have to help students overcome their doubts and fears. These times require patience and stamina.

Able to find joy in teaching

A good teacher derives a great deal of pleasure from teaching. You cannot make learning a joy for students unless you love the teaching profession and find joy in it.

My mother always thought us that we have a responsibility to be good citizens and that we are obligated to give as much as we can Service is the rent we pay for being. Reconstructionism: Reconstructionist advocate that schools should take the lead to reconstruct society. Schools have more than a responsibility to transmit knowledge; they have the mission to transform society as well. Reconstructionist go beyond progressivists in advocating social activism.

Showing Students They Really do MATTER!!

The community to adopt the school and volunteer on a regular basis Business to offer students incentives for learning Community to be involved with tutoring the children The community to assist the school with fundraising Assist the police with keeping the community safe Community come out and support the events and programs of the school Encourage the children everyday and take an active part in their educational development Help the student prepare for ISTEP and other standardized test Sponsor a College night to show the students what their future in post secondary education can look like Community to Just Care about the students
