Generator Bus Duct

Our systems assist you to achieve reliable and economical power supply. Business Application Generator Bus Ducts have the following main functions: Link between generator and unit transformer including generator circuit breaker, disconnectors and earthing switches Connections to power station services, excitation transformer, neutral point and current/voltage transformers Govern the generated heat in enclosures and conductors, proof against contact and earthing function, magnetic shielding and protection against environmental conditions

Main Features The design of bus ducts and their supporting steel structures depend mainly on the generator voltage up to 27 kV and load current up to 31 kA by self cooling and nearly 50 kA with forced cooling systems as well as from shortcircuit current level resulting from generators, network and power plant consumers. The single-phase enclosure, of single or triple insulator design, is the most common design. It ensures proof against contact, accordingly, safety of personal and increases availability of the system. It reduce significantly magnetic field (induced by the flowing high current) outside the enclosure. Depending on the design and requirement the bus duct can be equipped with over pressure system. For smaller rating up to about 3 kA flat and U-shaped bus bars, in common rectangular aluminum duct with or without partition are used. Customer Benefit ABB has standardized type range of bus ducts and possess know-how that ensure smooth running of busduct and all other interfaces to electrical components and systems. These guarantee quality wise reliable and economical system during the power station lifetime.

Generator Circuit Breakers (GCB)

Business Application The power produced by the generator shall be transferred to the unit transformer via the generator circuit breaker. ABB's Generator Circuit Breakers (GCB) are widely used in all kind of power plants stations such as thermal, geo thermal, hydro and pumped storage power stations. Our GCB's have been applied in over 2'500 applications. Main Features The electrical requirements for generator circuit breaker are specified in the IEEE C37.013 standard. Apart from the rated voltage, the most important selection criteria for GCB are the rated current and the rated breaking current of the generating unit. Associated equipment such as disconnector, grounding switches, a short-circuiting connection, current transformers, voltage transformers, protective capacitors and surge arresters can be integrated in the generator circuit-breaker enclosure. Depending on the type of power plant, additional items such as starting switches (for gas turbine and hydropower plants) and braking switches (for hydro power plants) can also be integrated. The SF6 generator circuit-breaker system helps to: Achieve maximum selectivity through arrangement of the differential protection zones of the generator, the unit transformer and the auxiliary transformer Rapid interruption of generator-fed shortcircuit currents within a maximum of four cycles, instead of several seconds using rapid de-excitation equipment accordingly reduces consequential fault damage and shortens repair times Increase the reliability, as synchronizing at generator voltage level using the GCB is considerably more reliable than synchronizing with a high-voltage circuit breaker Rapid changeover to the auxiliary supplies during unit start-up and shutdown, with the associated high inrush currents and resulting stresses, is reduced, thus avoiding possible damage to the drive motors of pumps, fans, etc. Allow plant auxiliary supplies to be drawn directly from the HV transmission system at all times, i.e. also during the critical start-up and shutdown phases which is considerably more reliable than other sources Customer Benefit The use of GCB increase the overall availability of the power plant. It also insures safety, reliability and economical operation of the power plant.

Unit Transformers
Business Application Unit transformers, in single- or 3-phase design, are used in power and waste to energy plants to transfer generated electrical energy from medium voltage level to high voltage level allowing transmission of energy to far distances without high losses. Main Features The main transformer category, in different vector groups and connections, is: Oil immersed transformers where core and winding are contained in mineral oil or similarly flammable synthetic liquid. Oil is used as coolant and insulating medium. They are usually used as generator, network or large auxiliary transformers Special constructions as three or more winding transformer with different cooling systems, such as forced air/forced oil cooling (OFAF) or natural cooling (ONAN) are available. Also different water/oil-coolers in case of space limitation can be offered. During the over-all engineering stage design of transformer must match the turbo groups

(generator and turbine) power chart and network conditions, which reflect on the design of the on-load tap changer (voltage regulation) to ensure proper function during normal conditions such as voltage drops in case of excessive loads and abnormal conditions such as in case of short-circuit faults. Transformer protection systems will be included into the overallplant protection system (unit protection). Provisions against atmospheric lightning strikes are also considered. Because transformer is a main component and its failure can cause black out of whole plant, ABB has developed transformer monitoring system to supervise transformer during life operation time and to detect any abnormality such as failure in winding, humidity or different gases in oil. It includes transformer aging rate indicator acc. IEC 354 and load indicator. This monitoring system reduces reaction time in case of disturbances and prevents outage of this strategic unit. It improves planning of maintenance periods and early planning to replace old units. Monitoring system can be integrated into the plant control system allowing smooth operation and reduce interfaces between different systems. Customer Benefit ABB product and innovation systems increase the overall availability of the energy supply. It insures safety, reliability and economical operation of the power plant.

Unit Auxiliary Transformers

Business Application Unit auxiliary transformers are used in power and waste to energy plants to transfer the generated electrical energy to the power plants consumers such as pumps, ventilators and lighting. Main Features The main transformers categories are: Dry type transformers (e.g. RESIBLOC type) usually used as auxiliary transformer, are characterized by extremely high mechanical resistance of the winding because of the fibre-glass-reinforced resin insulation and a very high resistance to fluctuation in temperature Oil immersed transformers are usually used as generator, network or large auxiliary transformers Special transformers, as converter transformer or excitation transformer are available. The standard cooling is natural air convection (AN). Air forced cooling (AF) or combinations (AN/AF) in case of loading or seasonal hot ambient temperature can be offered.

During the overall engineering stage the design of transformer must match the generators, consumers loads and network conditions to ensure the proper function during normal conditions such as start of motors and abnormal conditions such as in case of short circuit faults. The loads and their behavior will be considered in the selectivity protection scheme of the power plant. In addition all transformers have temperature control system to ensure the proper function of the units.

Customer Benefit ABB product and innovation systems increase the overall availability of the energy supply. It also insures safety, reliability and economical operation of the power plant.
