Student-Friendly Standards E9.2.3 I can identify producers in my neighborhood and community. E9.2.4 I can discuss why people work.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE 172 Get Set to Read. Explain the Study Guide students will complete as we read. Call students attention to the picture on p. 173, and ask which is the consumer? Is she using goods or services or both? Identify and discuss the differences between goods and services. Introduce vocabulary (goods, services, factory).

2. As a class, read p. 172-173, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE. 3. Students should take notes and record information on their study guide as we read.

4. Ask questions listed in the margins of TE as an ongoing check for understanding. Focus on the questions about economics: (TE 173) Where are many goods made? (TE 173) What do doctors and teachers do for their jobs? (Review question p. 173) What are some services that you use?

5. CLOSURE: Discuss the two statements in the Review/Assess section of TE 173. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Make a picture chart activity: Students will make a picture chart showing goods and services. Picture should clearly show familiar goods and services being performed. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must identify producers in my neighborhood and community and discuss why people work. Drawing a picture about people producing goods and services will show if they understand the concepts. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think this whole lesson will be easy to teach. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I dont think I will have any challenges with this lesson. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension to this lesson, I would use the Extend Lesson 3 on p. 174-177 about Scientists Serving Others. Students will learn about discoveries and inventions of four scientists that helped make life better for many people. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concept, I will use the Reteach Mini Lesson at the bottom of TE 173. We will work together to complete a Venn diagram for goods and services. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I think I would change the activity/assessment portion of this lesson. I think students might have trouble drawing a chart of goods and services. I think I would have them write a description of their drawing for a better assessment.
