LIFE DURING THE REIGN OF TERROR

The minute you walk out of class today you will be entering a whole new world- the world of the Reign of Terror. In this world there are French citizens and Committee of Public Safety spies. During this period, French people had to watch their behavior and demeanor very carefully. For those who did not seem to be whole-hearted supporters of the Revolution were declared enemies of the Revolution and went to the guillotine to lose a quick 10 pounds. We will be doing a simulation of what it must have been like during the Reign of Terror. You will go about your day as normal- but you will have to adhere to a strict set of rules or be fingered by spies from the Committee of Public Safety for execution.

Here are the rules for the simulation 1. You will be assigned a role either as a regular French citizen or a Committee of Public Safety spy. You must keep your identity secret or else you will not make an effective spy (lie if you have to). 2. Everyone must follow the rules (on back) as they go through the school day- you never know who will be watching. (Yes, spies, even you must watch yourself!)

3. Committee Spies - you are responsible for monitoring the behavior of your classmates, and reporting any indiscretions. Proper reports should contain the persons name, date, time, and their offense, and any witnesses. Reports that do not contain all of these things are not acceptable. - Spies will submit their reports to me prior to class each day. (By email, mailbox, or secret written reports). Be sure to do so surreptitiously. 4. At the end of the simulation, the spy with the most number of valid reports (as determined by the government) will receive recognition for their valiant service. The French citizen with the least number of reports filed against him/her will receive recognition of their patriotic dedication to the Republic of Virtue. 5. The simulation will take place in school over the next two days.
