Ad apa" is the repetition of any Mantra or a verse in the name of Lord. In the Kali-yuga (Vion age) Japa alone hasClose been

accepted as the easy way to the realisation of God. Japa is an important "Anga" of "Yoga". At present many educated persons and youngsters have lost faith in the power of "Mantra". The holy minds of these souls need to be educated.The science of "Japa", a basic facet of "Yoga" needs to be defined properly. To make one understand the spiritual base of "Japa",in simplest terms, we can understand it as :

* At the outset one should have a strong faith in the spiritual values of the "Japa". * The basic tenet of the value of repetition of the verse in the name of Lord or Almighty needs to be practised
regularly without fail, in routine. * At the time of practising "Japa", one must have sincerity of purpose and devoted confidence in the spiritual validity of the ultimate values attached to the name of His Holiness.

* Have full faith in the eternity of His Name. * While practising Japa of any Mantra, think of your Ista-Devta, feel His presence with you, and that He is really
with you.

* Practise, the Japa with full concentration. * One should know the meaning of the Mantra. * One should feel His presence in everything and everywhere, as He is omnipresent * As you repeat the Mantra and increase the frequency, you shall draw closer and nearer to Him. * You shall start feeling, as if He is shining in golden bright rich colours, in the chambers of your mind and heart. * Remember, He is witnessing your presence of mind - during the repetition of the Mantra, as He is the witness of
your mind.

* The shorter the Mantra you use, the greater will be your power of concentration. Greater the power of
concentration, greater is the sense of satisfaction you derive out of "Jap Yoga"

* Of all the Mantras, the best and most rewarding is - "Om Namah Shivaya". It is also called as the "Beej Mantra".
It is easy to repeat as well.

"Japa purifies the heart. Japa steadies the mind. Japa makes one fearless. Japa gives supreme peace. Japa awakens the kundalini. Japa destroys birth and death.
Japa unites the devotee with the Lord. Japa gives health, wealth, strength and long age."

In the Satya-yuga meditation has been prescribed as the principal form of discipline, as the minds of men were generally pure and free from destructive thoughts. But in Kali-yuga, as the minds of men are naturally prone to greater destructionsmeditation, worship and performance of sacrifices are not possible. Therefore, loud chanting of the Divine Name or "Kirtan" has been recommended as the principal Sadhana for the ultimate realisation of the Almighty. The name of God is your boat, Sankirtan your oar. Cross this ocean of Samsara with this boat and oar. Prahlada, Dhruva and so many others realised God through "Namasmarana" or "remembrance of the name of the Lord". The greatest of sinners can attain God realisation through the blessings of His name. Name is the bridge that connects the devotee with God. It is the master key that opens the door for "Moksha" for every human being. In the end, I would like to share some Questions and Answers with you. These answers have been collected from our religions books.

Ques. : Can Japa alone give Moksha ? Ans. : Yes, there is a mysterious power in the repetition of Mantra, and this

"Mantra-Shakti" through meditation or "Samadhi" brings the devotee face to face with God.
Ques.: What is the use of repeating the Mantra again and again ? Ans. : It generates force. It intensifies the spiritual Samaskara. Ques.: Can I repeat two or three Mantras ? Ans. : It is better to stick to one Mantra alone. It you are a devotee of the Lord

Krishna then try to see Him in Shiva, Rama, Durga, etc. Because all are forms of one God or Ishvara.
Ques.: Can I do Japa while walking ? Ans.: Yes, you can do it mentally. There is no restriction for Japa when it is done

with Nishkama Bhavna, i.e. for the sake of realising God alone.
Ques.: How to use a rosary ? Ans.: You must not use the index finger while rolling the beads. You must use the thumb and the middle or third finger. When counting of one Mala is over revert it and come back again. Do not cross the Meru. Cover your hand with a towel, so that the Mala may not be visible.Alternatively it is preferable to use an L-shaped bag made of cotton, silk or wollen fabric to keep the Mala and the hands covered while practising "Japa" Ques. : Can we control the Indriyas by Japa ? Ans. : Yes, Japa fills the mind with Sattva. It destroys the Ragas and out going

tendencies of the mind and the Indriyas. Gradually the Indriyas are withdrawn and controlled.

What is termed as renunciation is the same as Yoga, or linking oneself with the Supreme; for no one can become a Yogi unless he renounces the desire for sense gratification. In this age of quarrel and disagreement (Kali-yuga), there is no other way of spiritual realization but this chanting of the names. There is no other way, there is no other way, there is no other way !!!
