PART I: PLANNING Title of Lesson Source Subject Area (s) Grade Level Curriculum Standards
Cross Sections
Is this lesson original idea? If not, from what source did I borrow this lesson?
Original Lesson Math 7th 7-4.3 Identify the cross section of a solid. 7-4.2 Explain the results of the intersection of two or more geometric shapes in a plane.
The students will take notes on cross sections then they will watch an interactive display on the results of a cross section.
What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson?
Students will be able to identify cross sections with 80% accuracy on the common assessment.
How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material?
Repeated directions, extended time to complete activities, copies of notes and key terms provided, opportunity to correct assignment at least once after submitting for a grade
How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept?
For the students that have already mastered the concept I will encourage them to get the cross section of more shapes then the ones presented in the notes.
How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English?
I will vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English by giving them the opportunity to speak and hear new words. Statement of Purpose
Why is it important for the students to learn this content?
Cross sections appear in many professions. For instance, viewing layers of soil that have settled over centuries or examining the inside of a cell.
What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve the stated objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the students need? What other resources are needed? Will you use resource speakers?
The students will need their notebooks and paper. I will need a computer, a starboard, and a PowerPoint. Anticipatory Set
What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention? What is the hook that will serve as a focus for the lessons activities?
I will identify cross sections for different 3D-shapes and from different angles.
What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task?
The students will identify cross sections for different 3D-shapes and from different angles.
What questions will you ask to determine if students understand so far? What techniques or strategies will be used to determine if students understand so far?
I will ask the students what direction did I cut the cross section from. Does tat effect the shape of the cross section?
What will students do by themselves to show that they have internalized the knowledge?
The students will identify cross sections for different 3D-shapes and from different angles on a worksheet. Closure
How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? How will you wrap up the lesson to reinforce concepts taught during the lesson?
Describe the cross section of a cone that is cut perpendicular to its base
What will students do to demonstrate what they have learned?
I will use a PowerPoint to introduce the information to the students. Connection Across the How will you connect this lesson with I will connect this to Curriculum PART III: REFLECTION
