This social studies lesson is designed for 5th grade students to learn about the Civil War and the effects of slavery in the H2.5.2 Describe issues of compromise and conflict within South. This lesson uses the United States the 5th grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History (p. 416-419).

MONDAY week #1

Make copies of vocabulary and study guide for each student. Put vocabulary and definitions on the whiteboard.

This social studies lesson plan is designed for 5th grade students to learn about the people who worked to end slavery H2.5.2 Describe issues of and the different compromise and conflict within methods they used. THURSDAY week #1

Make copies of vocabulary and study guide for each student. Put vocabulary and definitions on the whiteboard. Reserve computers for students to look up a topic in the news today to prepare their debate.

Summary of Lesson Plan
This is the second lesson of chapter 13 in the second portion of the Civil War unit. Students will focus on how soldiers coped with camp life and how civilians on the home front coped with the war. The Houghton Mifflin 5th grade Social Studies textbook: United States History, pages 460-463 will be used.

H 2.5.2- Describe issues of compromise and conflict within the United States.

MONDAY week #2

Students will describe conditions that soldiers faced during the Civil War. Students will explain how the war affected both soldiers and people on the home fronts.

Need computer or construction paper and colored pencils at table groups for activity. Put definitions of vocabulary words on board.

This is the 3rd lesson of chapter 13, the second portion in a Civil War unit. During this lesson, students will describe the events and individuals who participated in the end of the Civil War. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 5th grade Social Studies textbook: United States History, pages 466-469 for this lesson. This is the 4th lesson from chapter 13, the second portion in a unit on the Civil War. In this lesson, students will recall information about the Civil War to help them understand the Reconstruction after the war ended. Students will use the Houghton Mifflin 5th grade Social Studies textbook: United States History, pages 472-477. This is the last lesson of chapter 13 and the unit on the Civil War. During this lesson, students will learn about the new freedoms and continual challenges after the Reconstruction. The 5th grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook: United States History, pages 482-485 will be used for this lesson.

TUESDAY week #2

H.2.5.2- Describe issues of conflict and compromise within the United States. Put definitions of vocabulary words on board.

Students will explain various factors and events that helped the Union defeat the Confederacy in the Civil War.

WEDNESDAY week #2

H 2.5.2- Describe issues of conflict and compromise within the United States.

Need extra loose-leaf paper for writing activity.

Students will be able to identify different plans for reuniting the country and the importance of the Reconstruction.

Put definitions of vocabulary words on board.

THURSDAY week #2

H 2.5.2- Describe issues of conflict and compromise within the United States.

Poster paper and loose-leaf paper for Extend activity.

Students will be able to explain in detail the end of the Reconstruction period and the effects it had on various groups of people.

Put definitions of vocabulary words on board.

Students will review all material they have learned in the past 2 weeks about the Civil War and Reconstruction. The 5th grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook: United States History, pages 448-449 and 488-491 will be used for the review.

FRIDAY week #2

H 2.5.2- Describe issues of conflict and compromise within the United States. Make 30 copies of chapter 12 and 13 tests for unit assessment.

Students will review information learned throughout the Civil War and Reconstruction in preparation for the Unit test.
