The Truth about College Costs

The Myths & Realities Frank Carrozza Head Womens Soccer Coach; Kings College Over the years I have spoken with many coaches, players and families about the college experience and the cost of attending a 4 year institution. In additional the myths and realities of Private Schools vs. Public/State Schools are always a hot topic. In this column I will bring to the surface some interesting facts about Division 3 Private colleges like Kings College that you may not have known. Myth 1 Private college tuition is unaffordable for most students. Reality 87.5% of independent college and university students receive some sort of financial aid, ensuring access to students of all income levels. The average private school tuition is $28,500, 46% less than the published price. The average net cost after financial aid is $12,970. At Kings, 97% of incoming students receive financial aid to help pay for their education, and the average percent of need met last year for freshmen was 76%. Myth 2 Most of the aid at private colleges is in the form of student loans. Reality Grants are the largest source of financial aid at private colleges and universities. Over 75% of institutional grants aid is need-based, going to students who otherwise could not afford to enroll. PA financial aid sources are typically 3% work study (allowed to work at the school while in school), 17% loans, and 80% grants. The average gift aid package (no loans) for Kings incoming 2012-2013 freshmen was $16,225 for residents and $16,981 for commuters.

Congrats ladies and WELCOME to Kings College and the Lady Monarchs Womens Soccer Family. We are excited to have you join us and we look forward to a new season! The Lady Monarchs will tackle a 18 game schedule next fall while looking to break into the conference playoffs for the first time since entering the Middle Atlantic Conference, one of the oldest and toughest conferences in the nation at the Division 3 level.

(Continued from page 1) Myth 3 A degree costs a lot more at private colleges and universities. Reality Students are as likely to earn a bachelors degree in four years at a private college as they are in six years at a state institution, avoiding additional tuition and entering the job market sooner!!! *The PA 4-year graduation rates support the quality and success of private schools at 66%, while only 47% graduate on time from state related schools, and only 34% graduate on time as a state system school!!! With over 87% of students receiving financial aid, private colleges are less expensive than you think! When you factor in the time it takes to earn a degree at a private school vs. a state school (and the savings that come with it), the price of a private college is really quite affordable! Myth 4 State colleges offer better deals than private colleges. Reality Students who attend private colleges and universities receive more in grants and scholarships than those at public institutions, significantly reducing the out-of-pocket costs a family is responsible for. To date private school packages are around $15,530 compared to public school packages coming in at or around $5,750. In short public schools are 170% less in terms of the amount of financial assistance they are giving. Private schools like Kings for instance gave out financial aid packages in 2012-2013 averaging $22,303 for residents and $23,069 for commuters. In closing I encourage families to give as much attention to private schools found in the Division 3 realm as they would with the public and state schools found commonly at the Division 1 and Division 2 realm. You will be pleasantly surprised with what you come away learning!
