ORDINANCES 0.1 Admission policy shall be decided from time to time by the Board of Governors of the Institute, following the guidelines issued by MHRD, Government of India. 0.2 The exact eligibility criteria for admission to the Programme shall be as approved by the Senate of the Institute from time to time and announced by the Institute for admission each year. 0.3 The normal duration of the programme including research work shall be ten semesters. 0.4 The award of the M.Sc.(Tech)/PhD degree shall be in accordance with the regulations of the Senate of the Institute. 0.5 Notwithstanding the stated regulations, the Senate has the right to modify any of those from time to time. REGULATIONS Part A RA1.0 Admission RA1.1 The admission policy and procedure are as decided from time to time by the Board of Governors (BOG) of the Institute following the guidelines from MHRD, Govt. of India. RA1.2 Candidates for admission to integrated M.Sc.(Tech)/Ph.D. programme should have passed a full time degree programme of 3 or more years duration in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics or Engineering with First Class (or CGPA of 6.5/10) in the first attempt. RA1.3 Reservation Policy as decided by the BOG following the directives of MHRD will be followed. RA1.4 The Post-graduate Admissions Committee constituted by the Chairman, Senate will decide on the operational aspects of selection of candidates based on the criteria laid down by the Senate. RA1.5 Vacancies, if required to be filled up after the admission date will be decided by the Chairman, Senate and reported to the senate for postfacto approval. RA 1.6 The fee structure is as decided by the Board of Governors from time to time. The mode of payment is as decided by the Senate from time to time. RA 1.7 Minimum duration of M.Sc.(Tech) Degree Programme is 6 semesters. In any case, a student must complete this programme within a period of 5 years. RA 1.8 Award of degree shall be made by the Institute in accordance with the regulations framed by the Senate of the Institute.

RA 2.0 Structure of the M.Sc.(Tech) programme RA 2.1 The programme of instruction will consist of i. Core courses (compulsory) ii. Elective courses ( departmental ) iii. Elective courses ( non departmental ) iv. Laboratory/Seminar/Mini Project v. Project work and dissertation The student may be required to give one or more seminars and undergo industrial / practical training during the programme. The complete programme for M.Sc(Tech) will be for a duration of 6 semesters. The academic programmes in each semester may consist of course work and/or project work as specified by the Senate. The M.Sc.(Tech) programme will have a curriculum and syllabi for the courses approved by the Senate. The curriculum should be so drawn up so that the minimum number of credits for successful completion of the programme is not less than 100. Credits will be assigned to the courses based on the following general pattern: i. One credit for each lecture period ii. One credit for each laboratory or practical session of two periods iii. Two credits for each laboratory or practical session of more than two periods. iv. Credit for the seminar, project work and industrial/practical training will be as specified in the curriculum approved by the Senate. A student will have to register in all the core courses listed in the curriculum Electives will have to be taken from the courses offered in that particular semester from among the list of approved courses as per the curriculum. A Student who has acquired the minimum number of total credits for the award of the degree will not be permitted to register for more courses to improve his/her cumulative grade point average. The medium of instruction, examination, and seminar & project reports will be English.

RA 3.0 Programme Coordinator RA 3.1 To help the students in planning their courses of study and for getting general advice on academic programme, the Head of the Mathematics

Department will assign a Programme Coordinator for the M.Sc.(Tech) programme. The Programme Coordinator shall keep a record of the academic activities of students registered for the programme. The Programme Coordinator in consultation with the HOD may avail the services of a few Faculty Advisers (FA). However, the Programme Coordinator will be the overall in charge in all matters concerning the students work and progress. RA 4.0 Class Committee RA 4.1 For each semester of M.Sc.(Tech), a Class Committee for each programme will be constituted by the Head of the Mathematics Department as follows: Chairman : A senior faculty / Programme Coordinator of M.Sc. (Tech) nominated by the HOD. Members : 1) All teachers handling classes for the concerned semester of the M.Sc.(Tech) programme. 2) One student member from the concerned semester of M.Sc.(Tech) RA 4.2 The term of the Class Committee shall be one Semester RA 4.3 The basic responsibilities of the class committee are: a) to review periodically the progress of the classes, to discuss problems concerning curricula and syllabi and the conduct of the classes. b) The type of assessment for the course will be decided by the teacher in consultation with the class committee and will be announced to the students at the beginning of the semester. c) Each class committee will communicate its recommendations to the Head of the Mathematics Department and the Dean (PGS&R). d) The class committee without the student members will also be responsible for the finalization of the semester results. RA 4.4 The class committee is required to meet at least twice in a semester once at the beginning of the semester and another time after the endsemester examination to finalize the grades. RA 5.0 Registrations and Enrolment RA 5.1 For each semester every student has to enroll and register for the courses he/she intends to undergo on a specified day notified to the student. The Programme Coordinator / Faculty advisers will guide the students in the registration process.

RA 5.2 The Registration card will give details of the core and elective courses, project and seminar to be taken in a semester with the number of credits. The course category should be as approved by the Senate. The student should consult his/her Programmed Coordinator/ Faculty Adviser for the choice of courses. The registration card is then filled in triplicate and signed by the student and the Course Coordinator/Faculty Adviser. RA 5.3 A student has to pay the semester fees before the day of registration or as per the schedule announced by the Dean (PGS&R). RA 5.4 A student will become eligible for enrolment only if he/she satisfies RA.7.1 and in addition he/she has cleared all dues to the Institute, Hostel and the Library up to the end of the previous semester and also he/she is not debarred from enrolment by the competent authorities. If for any compelling reasons a student is unable to register on the day of registration then he/she can register on or before the late registration day specified in the academic calendar on payment of late registration fee of Rs.250/- together with the usual fees. RA 5.5 Withdrawal from a course registered is permitted within two weeks from the date of commencement of the semester. Substitution by another course is not permitted. The number of courses remaining registered after withdrawal should enable the student to earn the credits required to continue the studies as indicated under RA.7. Courses withdrawn will have to be taken when they are offered next, if they belong to the list of core courses (compulsory courses) RA 5.6 In extraordinary circumstances like medical grounds, a student may be permitted by the Dean (PGS&R) to withdraw from a semester completely. Normally a student will be permitted to withdraw from the programme only for a maximum continuous period of two semesters. RA 5.7 The normal academic load of a student in a semester is 15 to 20 credits. Any load above 20 credits in a semester is regarded as over load and that below 15 credits is regarded as reduced load. In no case a student will be permitted to register for more than ten courses or more than seven courses of T (Theory) & C (Theory cum Practical) types or for more than 23 credits in a semester. The HOD shall communicate the details of students taking overload/reduced load to the Dean (PGS &R) within 3 weeks of commencement of the semester. RA 6.0 Attendance RA 6.1 Students are required to attend all the classes without fail. For unavoidable reasons, if leave of absence is required, then application for leave should be submitted to the HOD MAT with the

recommendation of the Programme Coordinator/Faculty Adviser, within three days of returning from leave or before the last instructional day of the semester whichever is earlier. RA 6.2 A candidate who has not attended 80% of classes (course wise) is not eligible to appear for the end semester examination of the respective courses. Also, he/she shall be awarded W grade for those courses. RA 6.3 Those who have 80% or more attendance for the period other than their medical leave can be considered for condonation of shortage of attendance provided the overall attendance in the course including the period of illness does not fall below 50%. Application for condonation recommended by the Programme Coordinator /Faculty Adviser, concerned Faculty and the HOD is to be submitted to the Dean (PGS&R) on or before the last instructional day of the Semester. The Dean (PGS&R), depending up on the merit of the case may permit the student to appear for the end semester examination. A student will be eligible for this concession at the most only once during the M.Sc.(Tech) degree Programme. RA 6.4 The teacher handling the course must finalize the attendance 3 calendar days before the last instruction day of the course in the semester. The particulars of all students who have attendance less than 80% in that course will be announced in the class by the teacher himself. Copies of the same should also be sent to the Dean (PGS&R) and Head of the Department of Mathematics. RA 7.0 Minimum Requirement to Continue the Programme RA 7.1 The student must earn credits at an average rate of 10 or more per semester and a CGPA of 4.0 or above for all the completed semesters, failing to satisfy this requirement, the student will be asked to leave the programme. RA 7.2 The above stipulation can be relaxed if the student has been permitted by the Dean (PGS&R) to discontinue temporarily any semester on medical reasons. RA 8.0 Maximum Duration of the Programme RA 8.1 A student is ordinarily expected to complete the M.Sc.(Tech) Programme in six semesters. RA 8.2 The Maximum Duration within which the M.Sc.(Tech) Programme is to be completed is five years from the date of admission. RA 9.0 Discontinuation from the Programme

Students may be permitted to discontinue the programme and take up a job provided they have completed all the course work and as per rules for the award of any financial support such as scholarship/ stipend they are drawing from the Institute or any other agency. If permitted, the project work can be done during a later period either in the organization where they work if it has R and D facility, or in the Institute. Such students should complete the project within ten semesters from the date of admission to the programme. Students desirous of discontinuing their programme at any stage with the intention of completing the project work at a later date should seek and obtain the permission of the Dean (PGS&R) before doing so.

RA 10.0 Discipline RA 10.1 Every student is required to observe disciplined and decorous behaviour both inside and outside the campus and should not indulge in any activity which will tend to bring down the prestige of the Institute. RA 11.0 Leave Rules RA 11.1 All M.Sc.(Tech) students should apply to the Head of the Mathematics Department/Course Coordinator for leave stating the reasons whenever they are not in a position to attend classes/project work. RA 12.0 Assessment Procedures: Tests and Examinations RA 12.1 For Lecture /Lecture and Tutorial based subjects two interim assessments will be made during the semester. The interim assessment may be in the form of periodical tests, assignments or a combination of both, whichever suits the subject best. The assessment details as decided at the class committee will be announced to the students in the beginning of the semester by the teacher. RA 12.2 For interim assessment, assignments, tutorials etc. carry 20 to 40 % weight and 60 to 80 % weight will be for tests. The total weightage of the interim assessments shall not exceed 50%. RA 13.0 End Semester Examinations RA 13.1 There will be one end semester examination of 3 hours duration in each lecture based subject. In the case of laboratory based subjects a final examination may or may not be conducted. In the case of projects, a viva-voce examination will be conducted at the completion of the project work.

RA 13.2 The Weight for the End Semester Examination shall not exceed 50%. R 14.0 Project Evaluation RA 14.1 There will be two seminar presentations on the project work during the fifth semester. At the end of fifth semester the progress of the work will be evaluated by a committee and letter grades will be awarded. At the end of the 6th Semester, the student shall present his/her thesis work before an evaluation committee constituted by the HOD, which will evaluate the work and decide whether the student may be allowed to submit the thesis or whether he/she needs to carry out additional work. This shall be an open presentation. A committee consisting of Programme Coordinator or his nominee (as Chairman), the Guide (as Internal Examiner) and an External Examiner (an expert from outside the Institute or from another department of the institute ) shall conduct the final viva-voce examination. In case the thesis is not accepted the candidate shall be allowed to carry out additional work and resubmit after a period of not less than three months decided by the evaluation committee. If the thesis is not accepted again the matter will be referred to the Senate and the Senate can allow one more chance for submission of thesis if considered necessary. RA 14.2 For the accepted thesis, Letter grades shall be allotted for the thesis by the thesis evaluation committee. The grades allotted for the thesis/ project will be counted for calculation of CGPA and for the Class awarded for M.Sc.(Tech) Degree as per R21.0 Class/ Division. RA 14.3 Final evaluation of Project work will be taken up only after the student completes all the core as well as elective course requirements satisfactorily. RA 15.0 Make-up Examination RA 15.1 Students who have missed interim assessments for valid reasons should apply with in five working days from the date of the examination missed to the concerned teacher indicating the reasons for the absence and teacher shall consider these requests suitably. RA 15.2 Students, who have missed the end semester examinations for valid reasons, should apply to the HOD MAT within five days from the date of the examination missed. Permission to sit for a make-up examination in the subject/s is given under exceptional circumstances like hospitalization or accident to the student etc. A student who misses this make-up examination will not be normally given another make-up examination.

However, in exceptional cases of illness resulting in the students missing a make-up examination, the Dean (PGS&R) in consultation with the Chairman of the Senate may permit the student to appear for a second make-up examination. RA 15.3 For application on medical grounds, students residing in the hostels should produce a Medical Certificate issued by an Institute Medical Officer only. Students staying outside the campus permanently/temporarily should produce medical certificates from registered medical practitioners and the same should be forwarded by the parents/guardians for the purpose of make-up examinations. The Dean (PGS&R) can use his discretion in giving permission to a student to take a make-up examination, recording the reasons for his decision. RA 16.0 Course wise Grading of Students into Categories RA 16.1 Letter Grades The weighted total marks secured by the candidate in each course will be converted into letter grades. The letter grades and the respective grade points are given in the following table: Letter Grade Grade point S 10 A 9 B 8 C 7 D 6 E 5 F 0 W 0 I 0

A candidate who has registered for a course, but was not permitted to appear for the end semester examination due to reasons including the shortage of attendance will be awarded W grade with grade point 0 for the course. A candidate whose result on any course is pending decision by appropriate body will be awarded I grade for such courses. All I Grades will be converted to actual grades, normally within a week after publication of results of the regular end semester examination. Any I grade which is not converted to regular grade within the stipulated time will be treated as F grade. RA 16.2 A Student is deemed to have completed a subject successfully and earned the credit if he/she secures any letter grade other than F, W or I. A letter grade F in any subject implies failure in that subject. A subject successfully completed cannot be repeated.

RA 17.0 Methods of Awarding Grades RA 17.1 A final meeting of the class committee without the student members will be convened within fifteen days after the last day of the end semester examination. The letter grades to be awarded to the students for different subjects will be finalized at this meeting. RA 17.2 Two copies of the result sheets for each subject containing the final grade and two copies with absolute marks and the final grade should be submitted by the teacher to the concerned Class Committee Chairman. After finalization of the grades at the Class Committee Meeting , one copy with the absolute marks and one without the absolute marks but having only the grades will be forwarded by the Class Committee Chairman to the Dean (PGS&R). One copy with absolute marks and the final grade will be sent to the Head of the Mathematics Department. RA 18.0 Declaration of Results RA 18.1 The letter grades awarded to the students in each subject will be put up on the departmental notice boards soon after the final class committee meeting. In case a student feels aggrieved, he/she can contact the concerned teacher for a second look at his/her performance but not later than two weeks from the commencement of the semester following the announcement of the results. The student shall have access to his/ her answer paper/s in the end semester examination which may be shown to him/her by the teacher/s concerned. If the teacher feels that the case is genuine he/she may re-examine and forward the revised grade, if any, to the Dean (PGS&R) through the Chairman of the Class Committee with justification for the revision and with intimation to the Head of the Mathematics Department. RA 18.2 The F grade once awarded stays in the record of the student and is deleted when he/she completes the subject later, indicating also the numbers of attempts made in that course. The CGPA will be accordingly revised deleting the F in the earlier attempts in that course. The grade acquired by the student later will be indicated in the grade card of the appropriate semester. RA 19.0 Course Repetition RA 19.1 A student securing F or W grade in any subject has to repeat it compulsorily when offered next, if the subject is listed as a core subject.

RA 19.2 If it is an elective subject, the student has option either to repeat it in order to get a successful grade or take another elective course. RA 20.0 Grade Card RA 20.1 The grade card issued at the end of the semester to each student will contain the following: a. the credits for each course registered for that semester b. the performance in each subject by the letter grade obtained vide RA.17.1 c. the total number of credits earned by the student up to the end of the semester d. GPA of the semester e. the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of all the courses taken up to and including the semester . RA 20.2 The Grade Point Average (GPA) will be calculated by the formula.

For the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) a similar formula is used except that the sum is over all the courses taken in all the semesters completed up to the point in time, including those in which the student has secured F & W grades. RA 20.3 At the end of the M.Sc.(Tech) degree Programme a consolidated grade card will be issued to each student. RA 21.0 Class/Division Classification is based on CGPA and is as follows: CGPA 8 and above First class with distinction CGPA 6.5 and above, but less than 8 First class CGPA 5 and above, but less than 6.5 Second Class RA 22.0 Eligibility for the award of M.Sc.(Tech) Degree RA 22.1 A student shall be declared to be eligible for the award of M.Sc.(Tech) degree if he/she has: a. registered and successfully completed all the core courses and the project. b. Successfully acquired the minimum number of credits prescribed

in the curriculum of the given stream within the stipulated time vide RA.8.1 c. No dues to the Departments, Institute, Library, Hostels and d. No disciplinary action is pending against him/her. The award of the degree must be recommended by the Senate and approved by the Board of Governors of the Institute. RA 23.0 Power to Modify RA 23.1 Notwithstanding all that has been stated above the Senate has the right to modify any of the regulations from time to time. REGULATIONS : Part B RB 1.0 Eligibility RB1.1 A candidate who has successfully completed the M.Sc.(Tech.) programme of NITC with a minimum CGPA of 7.0 is eligible to continue in the Programme. RB1.2 Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the interview and/or test, the Departmental Selection Committee will recommend to the Chairman, Senate the names of candidates found suitable to continue in the programme for integrated Ph.D., in accordance with the criteria approved for each year. RB 2.0 Registration RB 2.1 Candidates whose selection is approved by Chairman, Senate will be permitted to register for the Ph.D. programme after payment of prescribed fees. RB 2.2 Ordinarily, a candidate is not eligible for re-registration for Ph.D. after cancellation of his/her earlier registration for any reason. However, based on the merits of the individual case, and taking into consideration any special circumstances, a candidate may be considered for re- registration. RB 3.0 Choice of Guide RB 3.1 Allotment of research scholars to Guides will be made by the Head of the Department taking into consideration the preferences of the research scholars and Guides, with their consent obtained in writing. RB 3.2 There shall not be more than two guides for a research scholar RB 4.0 Guides - eligibility RB 4.1 All faculty members of the Institute with Ph.D. Qualification and a

minimum of 5 years experience in the Institute are eligible to guide Ph.D. students. However, faculty members with less number of years of experience who have outstanding publications can also be considered by the BPGS and recommended to the Senate for approval as research guides. Faculty members who retire from the Institute will be allowed to continue their guidance ofPh.D. Scholars in accordance with the following guidelines: External outstanding scientists/researchers who are recommended by BPGS and approved by Senate can also be permitted to be co-guides. Continuance of guidance on retirement of faculty members (a) When a faculty member, who has guided a candidate for 2 years, retires, he will be permitted to continue as guide on his written request, and will be invited for the DC meetings without any financial commitment to the Institute. But TA and DA, limited to II class AC train fare, will be paid within India to attend the synopsis meeting and the oral examination. (b) However, there will be a co-guide for taking care of administrative, and to some extent, the research responsibilities, of the scholar. (c) If a faculty member is to retire within 2 years, and if he is allowed to guide any scholar on his written request, another faculty member, who is not likely to retire within 2 years, will be nominated as one of the Guides of the scholar at the time to registration itself. The retired faculty member will be informed of the DC meetings, and will be invited to attend the meetings without any financial commitment to the Institute. (d) However, the retired faculty members who continue to be guides will be paid TA/DA, limited to II Class AC train fare, within India, to attend the oral examination. (e) The CSIR and other Emeritus Fellows/Scientists who hold office at this Institute for a period of 3 years and more can take fresh students during their period of appointment as Emeritus Scientists only with financial support from other sources along with another Guide whohas at least 3 years service still left at the Institute. (f) The induction of new guides after 1 to 2 years of registration of a research scholar will be considered by the Doctoral Committee in the office of the Dean, (PGS&R). (g) The Guide-in-charge who acted for more than one year will be a special invitee/co-opted member of the Doctoral Committee when the original Guide takes over. The rest will be left to the discretion of the original Guide.

RB 5.0 Change of Guide The Doctoral Committee may permit a research scholar to change his/ her Guide on valid reasons. RB 6.0 Doctoral Committee RB 6.1 The Head of the Department will intimate to the Academic Section the area of research, name(s) of the Guide(s) and a panel of names indicating the area of specialization of each faculty member for constitution of Doctoral Committee (DC) for each research scholar within 8 weeks of the date of joining of the research scholar. RB 6.2 The following is the composition of the Doctoral Committee: 1. Head of the Department (HOD)(If HOD Chairman happens to be the guide of the scholar, the Senior most Professor/Faculty or previous HOD will be nominated by Chairman, Senate or his nominee) 2. Dean (PGS&R) Member 3. Research Guide or Guides Member(s) 4. At least one faculty member of the Member Department nominated by the Chairman Senate or his nominee from the panel suggested by HOD 5. One faculty member of allied departments Member nominated by the Chairman, Senate or his nominee may be from the suggested panel of names by HOD 6. An expert in the concerned area of research Member from any research and development organizations or educational institutions may be nominated to the Doctoral Committee by the Chairman Senate or his nominee from a panel submitted by HOD. RB 6.3 In case any member goes on long leave or resigns or retires form the Institute, the Chairman, Senate or his nominee will nominate another member on the suggestion of the Chairman, DC. RB 6.4 The Doctoral Committee will meet normally within a week of its being constituted, interview the research scholar, consider the proposed research topic and prescribe course of study if necessary. Usually the courses done during the third year of M.Sc.(Tech.) will count towards the course work requirements for the award of Ph.D. degree unless the

Doctoral Committee decides that the scholar has to take additional courses in view of the area of research. RB 7.0 Progress Report RB 7.1 A research scholar shall submit within two weeks at the end of the first 12 months period from the date of registration and before the end of each 6 months period beyond 1year, a written report of work done by him/her in the prescribed proforma to the Guide who shall forward it to the Head of the Department with his remarks for consideration by the DoctoralCommittee. RB 7.2 A research scholar shall appear before the Doctoral Committee once every semester after the course work and comprehensiveexamination for progress evaluation. He/she is required to make a presentation of the progress of his/her work in the open meeting for which other faculty members and research scholars are also be invited. RB 7.3 Progress evaluation meetings of the Doctoral Committee will be convened by the head of the Department twice in a year in April (for research scholars admitted in July semester) and in November (for research scholars admitted in January semester) to assess the progress in his/her research work and recommend renewal of scholarship/registration wherever applicable. If the progress of the research scholar is tardy, the Doctoral Committee shall record the reasons for tardiness, warn the research scholar and suggest corrective measures. The progress of the research scholar will be categorized as one of the following by the Doctoral Committee: Excellent/Very Good/Good/Fair/Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory The Progress report in the prescribed Performa is to be approved by the members of Doctoral Committee before transmission toChairman, BPGS or Dean (PGS&R RB 8.0 Comprehensive Examination RB 8.1 The Department will constitute a Committee each year to conduct the comprehensive examination. The Head of the Department will be the Chairman of the Committee. This committee will be representative, covering all research areas of the Department and also have two members from outside the Department nominated by the Chairman, Senate or his nominee. The Guide will also be a member of the Comprehensive Examination Committee of the research scholar. The Doctoral Committee members will also be invited for the Oral Examination. In addition, an external examiner, if an expert in the

concerned field is not available within the Institute, may be appointed for the comprehensive examination. If appointed so, that examiner should be a senior faculty member in the rank of a Professor or Assistant Professor from higher institutes of learning such as IITs / NITs. When required, the Chairman Senate or Chairman BPGS will nominate the examiner from the panel of names submitted by the Head of the Department / Chairman Doctoral Committee of the scholar. The objective of Comprehensive Examination is to test the general capability of the research scholar and the breadth of his/her knowledge in his/her discipline and areas related to his/her field of research. The Department shall intimate to the research scholars sufficiently in advance the scope of written test and other relevant details. A candidate can appear for the comprehensive examination anytime after completing the coursework but in any case not later than 1 year after registering for Ph.D. If the performance of any research scholar at the comprehensive examination is unsatisfactory, he/she will be given one more opportunity to appear for the examination within six months of the first examination. In case the research scholar fails to successfully complete the comprehensive examination within the prescribed time limit his/her registration will be cancelled administratively by Dean (PGS&R).

RB 11.0 Minimum Time for Submission RB 11.1 The minimum period from the date of registration for Ph.D. Programme to the date of submission of Ph.D. thesis shall be 24 months. RB 12.0 Relief from Ph.D. programme to take up job: RB 12.1 Ph.D. Scholars who get appointment can get relief from the programme by keeping registration alive by paying necessary fees on the following conditions: (a) Scholars, who take up jobs in organizations with R&D facilities, will be relieved on their request on the recommendations of DC, if they have completed their (i) course work and (ii) comprehensive examination. b) The scholars, who take up jobs in organizations which do not have R&D facilities and in Computer companies will be relieved on their request on the recommendation of DC, if they have completed (i) Course work; (ii) comprehensive examination and (iii ) completion of 50 percent of his/her research work. c) The renewal of their registration for every year/semester will be considered only if the DC finds his/her progress to be satisfactory and recommends continuance of registration. RB 13.0 Maximum Duration of Programme RB 13.1 Research Scholars should submit the thesis within 4 years from the date of registration. However, the BPGS may extend the period of submission of thesis by not more than 2 years on valid reasons and on the recommendation of the Doctoral Committee. RB 14.0 Leave Rules RB 14.1 A student may be allowed casual leave up to 8 days per semester subject to the condition that such leave will not be allowed for longer than 5 days at a time. The casual leave cannot be combined with any other kind of leave other than the public holidays and casual leave cannot be carried over. RB 14.2 A student may be allowed leave during any period of Institutes vacation or during the mid-semester recess up to a maximum of 10 days on the recommendation of the supervisor by Head of the Department. Such leave not availed in one semester may be carried over to the next semester. The accumulated leave is limited to a maximum of 15 days. RB 14.3 Leave on medical grounds, duly supported by medical certificate may be granted to a student up to 7 days per semester. RB 15.0 Synopsis of Thesis RB 15.1 On satisfactory completion of the prescribed courses and the

RB 9.2 Late enrolment is permitted on payment of late enrolment fee as decided by the Dean (PGS&R). If at all any requests come for the re-registration the same will be considered by DC with a readmission fee of Rs.2000/-. RB 10.0 Cancellation of Registration RB 10.1 The registration of a research scholar whose progress is not satisfactory or who has not enrolled in person for any one semester is liable to be cancelled by the Doctoral Committee or by the Chairman, Senate or his nominee. RB 10.2 The registration of a research scholar who has not submitted his/her thesis by the end of the extended period as provided in the Regulations will be cancelled administratively by the nominee of the Chairman, Senate (Dean PGS&R).

comprehensive examination, the research scholar shall submit ten copies of the synopsis of his/her research work through the Guide and Head of the Department to the Academic Section for consideration of the Doctoral Committee. Research Scholars are required to give atleast two seminar talks on the topic of his/her research before submission of synopsis. The research scholar is free to publish the results of his/her research before submission of his/her thesis. A research scholar is required to give at least one open seminar in each semester after the completion of coursework and comprehensive examination which are to be completed within the stipulated time given in the regulations. Open seminars will be given after formal notice to all Departments so that any one interested will be able to attend the same. At the time of viva voce examination, the research scholar should have at least one paper accepted in a peer-reviewed/ refereed journal or patents registered. RB 15.2 The research scholar should present the synopsis before the Doctoral Committee. The Doctoral Committee will, if it approves the work reported in the synopsis, permit the research scholar to submit the thesis and recommend a panel of atleast eight thesis examiners. RB 16.0 Submission of Thesis RB 16.1 The research scholar shall, within three months of acceptance of the synopsis, submit four copies of thesis embodying the results of investigation, and also three copies of the Abstract of the thesis of about 400 words. On the recommendation of the Guide and Chairman, Doctoral Committee, an additional three months may be granted. However, DC can review the request for grant of time beyond the six months period, if the scholar makes an appeal with valid reasons, well before the prescribed due date. This exemption will not be applicable beyond the maximum duration of the programme of a research scholar as stipulated in the Regulations. RB 16.2. The thesis submitted for the Ph.D. degree shall contain an account of the research work carried out by the scholar leading to the discovery of new facts or techniques or new correlation of facts already known (analytical and/or experimental and/or hardware oriented in nature), the work being of such quality that it makes a definite contribution to the advancement of knowledge. RB 17.0 Panel of Examiners RB 17.1 The thesis shall be referred to two examiners chosen by the Chairman, Senate or his nominee from among the panel of examiners recommended by the Doctoral Committee at its synopsis meeting.

RB 18.0 Thesis Report RB 18.1 The examiner is expected to send the report on the thesis within two months from the date of receipt of the thesis. RB 18.2 In case of undue delay in receiving the thesis report, the Chairman, Senate or his nominee shall appoint another examiner in his place for evaluating the thesis. RB 18.3 If one of the two thesis examiners declares the thesis as not commended the thesis shall be referred to a third examiner from the panel for his evaluation. RB 18.4 If an examiner suggests resubmission of the thesis, after revision, the research scholar will be allowed to resubmit the thesis within the time stipulated by the Doctoral Committee failing which the revised thesis will not be accepted and his/her registration will be cancelled. RB 18.5 If two examiners, after referral to a third examiner, if necessary, report the thesis as not commended the matter will be referred to the Doctoral Committee and the Doctoral Committee can recommend resubmission of thesis after further research work of not less than one year. In the absence of such a recommendation the registration shall stand cancelled. RB 18.6 If reports of two examiners after referral to a third examiner, if necessary, declare the thesisas commended the Doctoral Committee will consider the reports and recommend for conduct of oral examination which will be conducted normally not earlier than two weeks from the date of constitution of the Oral Examination Board. The Doctoral Committee will suggest a panel for nomination of one member for Oral Examination Board. RB 18.7 In all other cases, not covered by the above Regulations the matter will be referred to the Doctoral Committee for consideration. RB 19.0 Oral Examination RB 19.1 The following is the composition of the Oral Examination Board: i) Head of the Department (If HOD happens to be the Guide, the senior most Professor /previous HOD) - Chairman ii) The Examiner of the thesis from within the country, or a specialist Member in the subject nominated by the Chairman, Senate or his nominee from the panel of examiners approved by the Doctoral Committee - Member iii) Guide(s) - Member(s) iv) A Specialist either from the Institute or from outside from the Panel of Members approved by the Doctoral Committee and nominated by the Chairman,Senate or his nominee - member

The Doctoral Committee members of the Research Scholar concerned will be invitees to the Oral Examination. RB 19.2 The Oral Examination Board examines the scholar on his/her thesis work and evaluates his/her performance as satisfactory or otherwise. The Board ensures that the scholar answers satisfactorily the questions raised by the thesis examiner(s) RB 19.3 If the report of the Oral Examination Board declares the performance of the research scholar is not satisfactory, he/she may be asked to reappear for oral examination at a later date (not earlier than a month and not later than six months from the date of the first oral examination). On the second occasion, the Oral Examination Board will also include the members of the Doctoral Committee. RB 19.4 The Oral Examination Board may also recommend revision to be made in the final version of the thesis after taking into consideration suggestions of the examiners who evaluated the thesis and the discussion at the oral examination. The Chairman of the Oral Examination Board shall forward the thesis to the Academic Section certifying that the revisions recommended by the Oral Examination Board, if any, have been incorporated in the copy of the thesis along with the report of the Oral Examination Board. RB 20.0 Award of Ph.D. Degree RB 20.1 If the performance of the research scholar in the Oral Examination is satisfactory, he/she will be awarded Ph.D. degree on therecommendation of the Senate and with the approval of the Board of Governors of the Institute. RB 21.0 Power to Modify RB 21.1 Notwithstanding all that has been stated above, the Senate has the right to modify any of the above regulations from time to time.
