A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson plan is designed for 1st grade students to learn about what maps are and how to use them. This will be an introduction lesson. The lesson uses different worksheets and a PowerPoint. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st Grade Skill Level: All learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion for introduction and teaching of material, small group discussion for activity, individual assessments. C. Materials: Paper(Writing Journal) Pencil PowerPoint Projector Worksheet D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.1.2 Describe maps as representations of places. G5.1.4 Use simple maps to illustrate direction.

Student-Friendly Standards I can describe that maps show where places are located. I can use a map to tell where places are located.

E. Procedure: 1. Introduction: I will begin the lesson by telling students that they will be learning about maps. I will ask students if they have ever seen a map and do they know what it is and what it is used for. As students give me answers I will write them on the board and create a list of students ideas. I will then introduce vocabulary to students: map key, legend, compass rose, scale, and labels. Students will write the vocabulary in their writing journal to use as a reference

2. I will then have students focus their attention so that they can view the PowerPoint. While students are viewing the PowerPoint I will point out things that they were correct about during our discussion.

3. Once we are done viewing the PowerPoint I will have students do a worksheet in their groups. The worksheet will be of a neighborhood map and they will have to figure out how to get to a certain location. Students can discuss their answers to the worksheet with their group members. 4. Once students are done I will have them label a map on their own. Students will get a picture of a town map and the labels of the map will be at the bottom of the worksheet. Students will cut out the labels and place them in the correct spot on the map. 5. CLOSURE: Students will fill out their My Map Skills Book. They will complete pages 1and 4 that answer the questions: What is a map? What does a map help me do? These are the cardinal directions they help me?

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the town map that students labeled and the My Map Skills Book to measure students understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know that students understand the concepts from the lesson if they are able to label parts of the map correctly and if they are able to tell me what maps are used for. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part to teach will be the parts of the map and the different types of maps. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging thing to teach will be why maps are used. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will extend the lesson by having students create their own map of their house or the route that they take to school for homework. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?
