A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan introduces symbols of the United States. Students will be able to identify at least 1 symbol that represents the United States. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for procedure steps 1-4. Small group for steps 5-6. Independent practice for step 8. C. Materials: Elmo Picture of U.S. flag Picture of walk/dont walk symbol Symbol facts worksheet List of websites for research Blank sheets of paper Crayons, markers, pencils Computers Internet access D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o
C13.1.5 Name a traditional U.S. patriotic activity, holiday, or symbol C13.1.5A Develop an awareness of traditional U.S. and Nevada patriotic activities, holidays, and symbols.

Student-Friendly Standards I can name a U.S. symbol that represents America.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher shows students a walk/dont walk symbol using the Elmo. Ask students what these symbols mean. How do they know? 2. Explain the United States has symbols too. Ask students if they know any symbols representing the United States. 3. The flag should come up in the discussion. If not, ask students if they think the flag is a symbol. 4. Show students a picture of the U.S. flag. Explain that weve all seen the flag, but do we know what is means and what is represents? 5. Hand out flag worksheet and break students into 3 groups. Assign each group a topic to research. The topics are: what do the stars represent what do the stripes represent,

and historical facts about the flag. Ask students to use the websites provided to complete their research. 6. Students will present their information to the class. Students will write down information on worksheet provided. 7. Explain students are going to create their own flag that represents themselves. Remind students to use symbols in their flag like how the stars and stripes represent something on the U.S. flag. Tell students to think about their hobbies, interests, family, friends, and anything that makes them an individual. On the back of the flag, students will write down what their flag means and what the symbols represent. 8. CLOSURE: Students will share their flag with a shoulder partner. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The worksheet and flag will measure student understanding of the lesson. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. The worksheet will show if students met the objective for the lesson. Students need to be able to name the flag as 1 symbol that represents the United States. Students also will need to explain what that symbol means.
