RENO, Nev.

- Ken Carson, a 48-

year-old right-hander from
Clifton N. J., got a rare second
chance at perfection April 12 and
took advantage of it, rolling
games of 192 and 286 before slam-
ming a 300 for a 778 series during
his team event at the National
Bowling Stadium. He added 609
in singles and 495 in doubles for a
1,882 all-events total.
LAKEWOOD, NJ Tyler
Brooks earned top honors in the
Saturday Scratch League at Ocean
Lanes blasting games of 230 and
255 then added a 300 for the ses-
sion high series of 765.
Mitchell Collier rolled 249-236-
246-731, Shaun Dillon 215-277-
235-727, Tori Boughton 267,
Shawn Kollmer 255, Larry Husted

THE VILLAGES, Fla. In a stepladder final
made up of three of the Professional Bowlers
Associations all-time greats, Hall of Famer Walter
Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., prevailed to win his
fifth career PBA50 Tour title by capturing the Sun
Bowl In The Villages presented by Hammer title at
Spanish Springs Lanes.
Williams, the reigning PBA50 Player of the Year,
defeated fellow Hall of Famer and 2012 PBA50
Rookie of the Year Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela,
276-216, in the championship match to win the sec-
ond tournament of the 2013 PBA50 Tour season.
Williams found it necessary to implement the
unusual technique of using a different ball on each
lane of the championship pair in the title match to
get the desired ball reaction on each lane.
Its not something I normally do, but I practiced
with a few balls and was able to determine that if I
needed to make a change like that I had the equip-
ment I could do it with, Williams said. It turned
out that I made the right decisions at the right time
and Amleto had a couple bad breaks and I was for-
tunate to get the win.
It was a rematch of the last time Williams and
Monacelli, a 19-time Tour winner, met in a PBA50
Tour championship match when Monacelli defeated
Williams 255-247 to win the 2012 PBA Senior U.S.
Open last June in Las Vegas.
Anytime you can beat Amleto its an accomplish-
ment, said Williams, who owns 47 PBA Tour titles
which tops the all-time list. There were so many
great players in this tournament I feel very fortunate
to have won it.
Williams advanced to the title match by defeating
Bo Goergen of Sanford, Mich., 258-191, in the semi-
final. Goergen, who was trying for his first PBA50
Tour win, made a dramatic jump from seventh in the
match play position round to make the final steplad-
der spot.
In the opening match, Goergen defeated Hall of
Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 259-256. Weber,
a 37-time PBA Tour winner who is competing as a
rookie on the PBA50 Tour this season, won the PBA
Tournament of Champions on March 31 for a record-
tying 10th major title and also became the first play-
er to win PBAs triple crown twice. He was also a
member of the New York City WTT KingPins team
that won the inaugural PBA League Elias Cup.
Several scoring records were set during the Sun
Bowl In The Villages which included the first 900
series in PBA history bowled by Joe Scarborough of
Mars Hill, N.C., during the tournaments first quali-
fying round. He ended the tournament finishing in a
tie for 49th place. A record 20 300 games were
bowled in the tournament and Scarborough along
with Williams tied the record for most 300 games
bowled in one tournament with three.
Another milestone was set in the Sun Bowl In The
Villages when 87-year-old Darrell Ducat became the
oldest player ever to bowl in a PBA event.

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
WEEKLY GLANCE
By Matt Cannizzaro - USBC
Team USA member leads two
events at USBC Open
Championships John Szczerbinski
of North Tonawanda, N.Y., threw
31 strikes in his final set at the
National Bowling Stadium on
April 21 to take the lead in Regular
Singles and Regular All-Events at
the 2013 United States Bowling
Congress Open Championships.
The 25-year-old right-hander fin-
ished with games of 279, 269 and
241 for a 789 singles series and
had 777 in team and 662 in dou-
bles for a 2,228 all-events total.
Kelly Bonta of Wichita, Kan., pre-
viously held the Regular Singles
lead with 776, while two-time
USBC Open Championships titlist
John Janawicz of Winter Haven,
Fla., topped the all-events stand-
ings with 2,169.
"I had a pretty good look last
night and knew the pattern would
be close, even though it's a little bit
shorter," said Szczerbinski, who
won the 2013 USBC Team USA
Trials to earn his third berth on
Team USA and a trip to the
QubicaAMF World Cup later this
year. "I came in with a game plan
of making quality shots, and that's
what happened. When you've got
10 guys around you who are root-
ing for you and giving you support,
it makes it a lot easier to make
those quality shots."
Three of Szczerbinski's five
Open Championships appearances
have come at the NBS, where he
has averaged 238.5 for 27 games,
including a 299 game and 805
series in singles in 2011.
Familiar names come up big
Former Team USA member Scott
Pohl of Burnsville, Minn., and
Blaine Weninger of Clackamas,
Ore., became the 10th and 11th
competitors to roll perfect games
at the 2013 USBC Open
Championships.
The two right-handers achieved
perfection during team competi-
tion at the National Bowling
Stadium on April 22, while
Matthew Smith of Altoona, Iowa,
fell one pin shy of becoming the
27th bowler in tournament history
to notch multiple 300 games on the
championship lanes. A 4 pin after
11 consecutive strikes left him
with 299. His first 300 at the Open
Championships came in singles in
2012.

May 1 - 7, 2013 SPORTS REPORTER 3
ARLINGTON, Texas - James Williams of
Pawcatuck, Conn., has been striking across the New
England area for decades and solidified his place in
bowling history Tuesday as he rolled 36 consecutive
strikes for a 900 series at Old Mountain Lanes in
nearby Wakefield, R.I.
The 47-year-old right-hander struck on every shot
he threw during the South County Classic league to
become the 21st bowler in history to record a perfect
series. The achievement is pending approval from the
United States Bowling Congress and would be the
22nd USBC-approved 900.
In Williams' final frame, the 4 pin fell late on his
first shot, and the 10 pin was the last to go on his sec-
ond. His final delivery of the evening was an unfor-
gettable light-mixer that earned him a spot in one of
the most exclusive clubs in the sport. Bob D'Antuono
of Lincoln, R.I., previously owned the Ocean State's
highest set with 889, rolled in 1997.
"I was just trying to make good shots," Williams
said. "I was a little nervous with everybody watching,
but I tried to take it one shot at a time and just see
what would happen. I never expected to have a night
like this."
Williams has averaged more than 240 on several
occasions and consistently has rolled honor scores
over the course of his career. His latest achievement
nearly left him speechless.
"It's a pretty big accomplishment and hard to put
into words," Williams said. "You never expect to
shoot three 300s. It's hard to imagine not a single
nine-count. It was an unforgettable night and one of
the best of my life."
The first USBC-approved 900 occurred Feb. 2,
1997 when Jeremy Sonnenfeld rolled three consecu-
tive perfect games in Lincoln, Neb. There has never
been a 900 on Sport Bowling lane conditions.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla.
Overcoming a back injury suffered
in qualifying, Bob Learn Jr. of Erie,
Pa., won the PBA50 Pasco County
Suncoast Open Benefiting
Wounded Warriors at Lane Glo
Bowl for his second career PBA50
Tour title.
In the first tournament of the 2013
PBA50 Tour (formerly Senior Tour)
season, Learn defeated PBA Hall of
Famer Wayne Webb of Columbus,
Ohio, 226-206, in the championship
match.
Learn, also a five-time PBA Tour
winner, injured his back when he
slipped slightly on his approach dur-
ing the fourth frame of the first
game of Tuesdays second round of
qualifying which caused a sprain in
his lower back. He managed to
struggle through the rest of the
round but didnt know how long he
would last.
With the help of Gulf Coast Spinal
Center, one of the tournaments
sponsors, Learn was able get treat-
ment on Tuesday evening and
Wednesday morning to at least
make an effort to bowl in
Wednesdays match play.
I thought I might have to with-
draw after a couple games in the
second round of qualifying but I
managed to struggle through it,
said the 51-year-old Learn. The
treatment helped to the point where
I felt good enough to at least start
match play but I had no idea how far
I could go after that. The expecta-
tion was not to win but maybe make
it through a match or two.
I felt about 20 percent yesterday
but felt about 80 percent today, said
Learn, who had to win five matches
to get to the championship match. I
was actually getting better as the
day went on and was probably in
my best shape when I had some of
my toughest matches toward the end
of the day.
One of those matches was the
semifinal where Learn defeated Hall
of Famer and reigning PBA50
Player of the Year Walter Ray
Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., 229-216,
to advance to the championship
match.
Webb, who was trying to win his
sixth PBA50 Tour title, defeated
Tim Kauble of Marion, Ohio, in the
other semifinal match, 245-206.
Woman amateur standout Lucy
Sandelin of Tampa, who qualified
third, was eliminated in the Round
of 16, losing to Mike Dias of
Lafayette, Colo., 3 games to 1. The
United States Bowling Congress
Hall of Famer was making a bid to
become the first woman to win a
PBA50 Tour tournament.

North Brunswick, NJ - In the Girls
Individual Tournament of
Champions, Mother Setons
Dominique Toro earned the top seed
with her six-game block of 1377,
but came up short against second
seed Bryce Petraccoro of
Manasquan, 222-196 who is this
years champion. Other North
Jersey girls who advanced to the
second round were: Spartas Sarah
Rhodes 1253, Science Parks Laura
Uzzell 1235, Memorials [WNY]
Amanda Santos 1119 and West
Oranges Lauren Pinkard 1085. In
the Stepladder Finals, fifth seed
Amy Caruso of South Brunswick
toppled fourth seed Katie Lash of
Brick Memorial, 223-178, but was
then eliminated 256-185 by West
Deptfords Morgan Brown, the third
seed. Manasquans Bryce
Petraccoro then stunned Brown,
233-176 to earn the right to face
Toro for the title.
The North Jersey boys placed two
in the top five and four others in the
top eighteen qualifiers. Glen Rock
junior Jake Rollins qualified fourth
with 1447 and Passaic Tech fresh-
man Isiah Tolbert fifth with 1444.
Also finishing in the top eighteen
were Hackensack senior John
Draney 1370, St Peters Prep senior
Will Blanco 1365, Northern
Highlands senior Josh Taylor 1340
and Bloomfield senior John JT
Festa 1307. In the single elimination
Stepladder Finals, southpaw Tolbert
outscored Rollins, 224-202, but was
then beaten by Allentown lefty Matt
Russo, 238-222. Ocean Twps
Kenny Ryan, seeded second on the
strength of his 1501 six-game block,
survived the high-scoring duel with
Russo, winning 267-248. Jackson
Memorials Mike Ormsby, the top
seed, had rolled an incredible 1530
six-game block, an average of
255/game, and was not to be denied
the championship as he cruised past
Ryan, 246-206.

4 SPORTS REPORTER May 1 - 7, 2013
NEWARK, N.Y. - In a battle of
contrasting styles, Alan Felmlee of
Warren, Pa., a powerful, young
strapper, defeated Matt Zachowicz
of Buffalo, a smooth-stroking veter-
an, 388-343, to claim the New York
State Masters Championship title
Saturday night at Doug Kents Rose
Bowl Lanes.
Felmlee rolled 190 and 198 in the
two-game finals to turn back
Zachowicz, who posted games of
173-170, on the challenging WTBA
Atlanta oil pattern. With the win, the
23-year-old right-hander pocketed
$2,000 plus a paid entry to next
years USBC Masters and $200 in
expense money.
Zachowicz earned $1,000 for plac-
ing second. Twenty of the tourna-
ments 98 entrants received a cash
prize from the prize list of nearly
$8,000.
The final match was closer than
the outcome as Zachowicz had cut
the deficit to 12 pins heading into the
eighth frame of the second game. He
opened in that frame, however, and
Felmlee delivered two high flush
strikes in the ninth and 10th frames
to secure the victory.
I just tried to slow everything
down at the end of the game, relax
and just throw the ball, said
Felmlee, a plastics engineer for
Truck-Lite in Falconer. He said he
switched from a Storm Fast to a T-
Road Pearl in the seventh frame of
the final game, and it paid off.
A regular bowler in two leagues in
Jamestown, Felmlee won the 2012
Eastland Open in Erie and was the
2007 Elks Junior/Senior Scratch
champion. His high-revving, high-
speed style has resulted in 10 perfect
games (including two Sport 300s)
and five 800 series thus far in his
career.
Felmlees trip to the title match
began by posting a 1,020 score dur-
ing the five-game qualifying round,
which was third on the first squad
and sixth overall. He then defeated
defending champion Jim Emens of
Rochester, 401-357, before stopping
Tom Sullivan of Ithaca, 389-331,
and Steve Wagoner of Broadalbin,
435-365.
A lot of bowlers show up, its a
tough pattern and it makes you
work, he said. The emphasis is on
spare shooting, not just throwing a
bunch of strikes.
On the other side of the match-
play bracket, Zachowicz (who qual-
ified with a 985 score) advanced
with wins over Chad Mee of
Hamburg, 418-340, Charlie Millard
of Waverly, 432-380, and Brad
Fournier of Malone, 408-387.
Zachowicz said he was pleased
with his performance.
I started bowling better in my
40s, so Im a late bloomer, said
Zachowicz, 56, a tool designer who
has three Frank Cascio tournament
victories to his credit. Ive worked
hard at it to become a good spare
shooter and can grind it out. It feels
good to be able to compete.
Knowing that I can compete, thats
the goal.
Semifinalists Fournier and
Wagoner each earned $600 for their
efforts, while quarterfinalists
Millard, Sullivan, Sam Capizzi of
Rochester and Tim Hungerford of
Hilton won $350 apiece. Bob Wiley
of Rochester, who placed second in
2011 and 2012, was the tourna-
ments high qualifier with an impres-
sive 1,126 score.
