B. Information seeking strategies
- I contact Miss Ho before the first meeting. I send her my schedule and also my
expectation of mentorship.
- While we first meeting, we try to clarify our expectation, form a mentorship
schedule, and evaluate some resource we get.
- Miss Ho show me the school library facilities, the book shelves, and also
introduce the library assistant.
- I try to seek more information about the school background, the library setup
history, and also the library year plans and some library policy documents.
C. Analyse and synthesize the information
- There are some Basic Facts of the school.
• New Co-educational DSS secondary school opened in Sept 2006
• English Medium of Instruction (EMI)
• Chinese taught through Putonghua
• Full capacity 30 classes, 5 classes / year, 900 students
• High teacher/student ratio at 1:15
• Small class sizes (below 30)
• IB World School for Middle Years Programme (MYP) since Feb 2009
• Implementing New Hong Kong Secondary Curriculum through the MYP
framework
• Vertical House system for pastoral care and academic schemes

- There is some basic information of the school library.


 The school library is in the top floor of the school, sixth floor. It opened for
three years.
 The library collections are fewer. And there library system is SLS.
 there have a anti-theft detection near the library entrance
 The opening hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm, from Monday to Friday school
days.
 There are no library lessons, but the library will be book by school subject
teachers. Sometimes only book the place, and sometimes will request the
teacher librarian to cooperate in the lesson. Subject teachers book library
through communicate with the teacher librarian in e-mail.

D. Self reflection and suggestions


- The library environment is very neat, quiet and beautiful. There have plants, a
photocopy machine and five computers for student to use. They open for three
years and the collections are fewer. Due to this reason, the circulation rate is
very lower.
- The library has fewer readers. For attract more readers to come, the library
provide many games for readers to borrow. But when library open, student
only play games and make a lot of noise. Suggest explore more internet
resources for student self-learning and hold more activities in the library to
attract readers.
- The library has an anti-theft detection, but just buy partly service. Each time
after student borrow books, their need to keep their book in the counter, and
take back when they leave library. The process is trouble and student always
forget to take back their books when they leave library. Suggest buy the whole
service when there have budget. Long term, when library have more readers,
it will get trouble when all of them keep books in the counter.
- Flexible timetable let library become meaningful access when
needed,flexible scheduling as providing a better opportunity for collaboration
between teachers and the librarian and for curriculum support.
- There have no library nor will reading year plan, TL just take sample records
after reading activities held. However a integrity year plan is very important. It
helps library all aspect development. And let TL has an over-all view of the
whole year job planning. It also help evaluation and amendment our job.
- There have no Collection Development Policies. But it is important to have
Collection Development Policies. Collection Development Policies can guide
the librarians how to develop in standard quality continuously. Policies give
selectors a clear instruction and standards for the selection, acquisition,
weeding of materials; avoided personal bias when selecting; guiding

procedures in handling complaints; provides a standard for evaluation of


collections. More important is let teachers, students, parents, librarians and
outside peoples understanding the purposes and goals of library of the
school.)

1. Observe library lesson demonstrate how to cooperate with subject teacher.
2. Observe and participate library club activities

5. Cataloging process observation and practice
6. Observe how to integrating information skills into the curriculum.
F. Information seeking strategies
- Join the group meeting
- Join the class
- Join the activities
- Observation during the library open and provide service
- Interview with volunteers, students and the library assistant.
G. Analyse and synthesize the information
- Parent volunteer group will come to help the library each Tuesday because
this day library will not being book by other subjects. The volunteers job
include book package, put the books back to the shelf, book data entry and
board design.
- Most of the student librarians are the library club member. They have no SL
training. But the library club will have meeting each Fri after school. SL has no
motivation to do their duty. The library club will teach some reading skills.
Sometimes will facilitate the club member to promote reading activities such
as invite school teacher to come to the book sharing.
- Collaborative practice as the major plank in a school's culture. I join two
lesson. One of them is Chinese lesson, and TL has been require to prepare
some newspaper for the student to doing newspaper cutting for information
collection. Another lesson is science lesson, TL hold partly lesson to teach
student the e-resource in the public.
- When lunch break, student less come to the library, most of them just come to
play board games, borrow PC or stationary. The library will use light turn off as
a signal of library closed.

H. Self reflection and suggestions


- Collaborative practice as the major plank in a school's culture, but the
collaborative level can be improve more by participate in subject meeting, then
the TL will well-known what subject teacher need, and let the lesson more
effective.
- Circulation service, there are rarely SL on duty, and the circulation rate is very
low. Most of student come to the library for playing games, borrow PC or other
stationary. Try to explore more e-resources in the web become more import.
And also create more activities in the library is also important.
- About cataloguing, if catalogue books one by one in the SLS system, the data
will be very precise, but it kill a lot of time. If use the excel file for block data
entry, the preciseness may be low down, but save a lot of time. School library
is different with a public library, their function is different, we concern more in
educational process and outcome, so I think put more time in school reading
development is more important than the data preciseness.
- The student librarian(SL) team: SL training is very important. Good quality SL
help the library a lot. After training, give SL more important duty , for example
let them do the circulation job, help classmate borrow and return books, it will
attract them to come to do their duty.

- Oobserve and practice SLS cataloging and circulation.
- Demonstration library web-site setup to the teacher librarian
- Discuss with the TL and the library assistant.
C. Analyse and synthesize the information
- Cataloging method: SLS is not a user friendly library system. The cataloguing,
import and export data are complicate. The circulation layout is also poor,
uneasy to read and use.
- Library role and information policy, because lack of budget, the collection are not
enough to attract more reader, so try to explore more e-resources in the web
become more import. And also create more activities in the library is also
important.
- TL duty: Busy because of the hold day opening time, from 8am to 5pm. Student
will come anytime, even the library have lesson. She facilitate the reading
programme, lead a library club, and train parent volunteers.
- The assistant always busy in cataloguing. She catalogue books one by one in
the SLS system.
D. Self reflection and suggestions
- It is very important to choose a good, more user friendly library system, and
it’s good for the library long term development.
- TL professional development: TL weak in the technology skill, so keep life-long
learning is very important for a TL to get new knowledge.
