English Career 4/2

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH IN MEDICINE English needs to access all kinds of reading material, for making an investigation, is the first necessity that comes to mind at all. I think in this way because the vast majority of publications in the field of medicine and nursing are done in this language. On the other hand, if the researcher or professional, who wants to keep up, decides to go to important Congress, immediately perceive that the best and most interesting conferences or lectures are usually conducted in English, although this is not the native language of the speaker. And, even if you have simultaneous translation, the person who knows English will have the advantage of being able to understand the message directly, without the risk of losing information. Another reason could be the manual instruction for fixing instruments are in this language, given the rapid advancement of technology in all fields of medicine including, constantly coming to hospitals, clinics, outpatient centers and other hospitals, new equipment, devices and instruments which either assembly instructions, use operation, maintenance and cleaning usually come in mostly English, or English and German. And although in some centers or hospitals translation teams exist, they are often found overwhelmed by the work, resulting in a considerable delay in the use of new equipment. You should also keep in mind that it is possible the presence of these experts whenever we arise a doubt or hurry. Moreover, whatever type centers have computers to facilitate the work, and anyone used to handling them know that although many of the software is already translated into Spanish, is often found in situations where you need to know English language to understand interactive computer such as the operating system. Finally, we have to consider the interaction with foreign patients. We cant forget that Ecuador is a country where thousands of tourist visitors from diverse geographic areas and whose ways of communication is English, even in the case of those from nonEnglish-speaking countries. It is possible that, at some point, these tourists require some type of medical or nursing care such as in case of accident or illness. And this can happen, as we all know, even while passing either Salinas or Santa Elena. Nor can we forget the multitude of foreign retirees, mostly from Northern America, which often become peninsular areas in their homes.
