Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary by Comfort Keepers

Howard and Harriet celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in October 2012. The happily married couple met on a blind date arranged by her sister. Harriet said, My sister and I were lying in bed that night after that first date, and I told my sister, I am going to marry him.
Harriets brother-in-law was an architect who designed their home. Together Harriet and Howard built the home they are still living in since they first married 60 years ago. Harriets proud career as an interior decorator and a seamstress is evident by the curtains and draperies, which are still hanging in their home today. She also did alterations for people who would come to her home for business. Harriet had been in the hospital and then rehab. A NAACP delegation led by Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors, met with Haitian President Michel Martelly to discuss key civil rights issues including education, health care, and economic sustainability. The NAACPs delegation which included Dr. David Emmanuel Goatley, Chair NAACP International Affairs Committee; Kamilia Landrum, Youth Representative, NAACP National Board of Directors, NAACP Chief Operating Officer & Chief of Staff Roger C. Vann and leaders from partner organization the Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti, were also joined in the meeting by Haitian cabinet members, including Paul Altidor, Haitian Ambassador to the United States and Bernice Fidlia, Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE). Sophia Martelly, Haitis first lady also participated in the meeting. Following his 1920 visit to Haiti, James Weldon Johnson published a series of articles recounting the adverse impact of US occupation of Haiti. The NAACPs efforts contributed to the evacuation of troops from Haiti." By deploying this delegation, the NAACP continues a journey for partnership with our Haitian siblings as they seek a safe, strong, and secure future." The delegation also met with Simon Dieuseul Desras, President of the Senate. During their visit, delegation members traveled through Port-au Prince to view the progress of NAACP-funded humanitarian efforts after the 2010 Earthquake that killed an estimated 220,000 people and displaced millions. The group visited the Santo community a Habitat for Humanity project that received a $50,000 grant from the NAACP. The NAACP funded three additional civil society projects, including an orphanage. A criterion for the project grantees was Haitian leadership. Overall, the NAACP donated $200K to Haitian civil society projects. Kamillia Landrum, NAACP National Youth Work Committee acknowledges the importance of educational empowerment for Haitian students: Advancing quality public education is a top priority for the NAACP. it is important that we look into how we can advocate for the Haitian students to get the best education possible. The Association will use the information gleaned from government officials, civil society leaders and partners to discern how to advocate for some of the issues affecting this embattled nationincluding our strategic game changers of economic justice, education, health, civic engagement and criminal justice.

Effective immediately, both the Madison and Milwaukee Area Wheelchair Recycling Program stores will be doing business as the IndependenceFirst Mobility Store as a program addition for nonprofit IndependenceFirst. This new IndependenceFirst program provides like-new quality devices at affordable prices for adults and children with disabilities, including older adults with age-related disability, who require mobility or medical equipment. We have had a supportive relationship with the Wheelchair Recycling Program for several years and it seemed the right time to keep this program going and formally extend our program reach and offer enhancements with a merger/acquisition. said IndependenceFirst Board Chair John Schmid. The Board felt this was a natural move, in keeping with IndependenceFirsts mission to assist people with disabilities to live independently, many of whom are on fixed incomes or unable otherwise to afford new durable medical equipment. The IndependenceFirst Mobility Store continues its preexisting relationship with Badger State Industries and the WI Department of Corrections which provides inmate job skill training through the refurbishment of donated equipment to likenew condition prior to resale. History of Wheelchair Recycling Program: The nonprofit was first established in Madison, Wisconsin in 1988 as an all-volunteer effort to send used medical equipment overseas. In 2007, expansion continued with dedicated staff and an office in the Milwaukee area enabling WRP to offer its services across the state with the support of Independent Living Centers throughout Wisconsin. The program takes pride in assisting individuals to find the right piece of equipment so they can maintain their health, safety and continue to be independent. In just the past 2 years the program has diverted 160 tons of waste equipment from our landfills and provided over 2,800 consumers over 4,000 items. About IndependenceFirst: Since 1979, this nonprofit has assisted people with disabilities of all ages to live independently with over 20 programs and services. Born out of the disability right movement, over 51% of its onsite staff, managers and Board have disabilities themselves. The organization has been deemed the conscience of our community by Department of Justice regional representatives related to issues of inclusion and access through its awareness-building and advocacy activities. An additional 1,600 personal care workers help people with disabilities with activities of daily living in their own homes, allowing them to live outside of nursing homes. With over 5,000 calls annually and comprehensive disability resources, they wish to be the communitys FIRST place to call with questions related to disability and access. In fact, the LA Times rated Milwaukee as the most segregated city in the nation. It is a city of art and culture, boasting one of the most beautiful art museums in the nation and dotted with classic mansions from Milwaukee's day of glory, but having many and widespread areas of poverty and despair. If you could change one thing in your school, what would it be? When student members of the 50 Acts of Leadership program at James Madison Academic Campus were asked that question, they decided to do something to make the freshman hallway at their school more welcoming. After school on March 28, the students painted murals that will be placed above the lockers in the 9th-grade hallway. Wisconsin State Assembly District 11

Representative Mandela Barnes stopped by JMAC (which is located in District 11) to talk to the students before the project then stuck around to paint with them afterward. Forty freshmen are enrolled in the JMAC 50 Acts of Leadership program, which encourages students to take active roles in their communities by developing and executing projects aimed at these four groups: family, teachers, peers and friends, and community members. These students are the future of Milwaukee, and the community needs to see that positive participation in young peoples lives will ultimately lead to a greater society, said Representative Barnes. Our students need to see that even their elected representatives will literally stand by them as they grow into Milwaukees next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs and bright minds. Without giving our support to these students now, there isnt a bright future for Milwaukee. The JMAC 50 Acts of Leadership group meets twice a week with a City Year Milwaukee corps member for discussions that build trust, leadership and resiliency skills. More than 70 City Year Milwaukee corps members serve as tutors, mentors and service providers across the MPS district.
