Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary by Comfort Keepers

Howard and Harriet celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in October 2012. The happily married couple met on a blind date arranged by her sister. Harriet said, My sister and I were lying in bed that night after that first date, and I told my sister, I am going to marry him.
Harriets brother-in-law was an architect who designed their home. Together Harriet and Howard built the home they are still living in since they first married 60 years ago. Harriets proud career as an interior decorator and a seamstress is evident by the curtains and draperies, which are still hanging in their home today. She also did alterations for people who would come to her home for business. Harriet had been in the hospital and then rehab. With a desire to return home, their daughter thought she might need some additional assistance once she got there. Comfort Keepers has been there ever since. Caregiver Lulrene has been with Harriet since day one. Harriet said that all of her caregivers are very nice but, Lulrene is the best. Lulrenes energy and smile light up the room when she enters Harriets home and life, making a difference in her quality of daily living. When Comfort Keepers interviewed Harriet and Howard the words, how adorable they are, came to mind. Not everyone gets to remain in his or her beloved home and be happily married for 60 years. Comfort Keepers cares for Harriet, helping her get her up, dressed and going for the day. Just that little bit of help is all it takes to stay safe and secure in their home together. Why Comfort Keepers? Comfort Keepers creed, to treat each and every client as if they are a family member, best matched Shar Mellers own philosophy. Each and every caregiver has been screened, bonded, insured and trained, with credit, motor vehicle and criminal background checks performed. Bonding insurance gives their clients peace of mind and takes the worry and fear out of having a new person enter their lives and home. This extensive screening ensures clients that our caregivers have the same caring nature and love of our clients as we do, Shar said. She believes she has the best caregivers in Wisconsin and that her expertise in matching the clients with a particular caregiver is the key to her success. If our clients are not happy with a particular caregiver, we match them with a different one, she said. Our personal goal is to make our clients and their families 100 percent satisfied. Comfort Keepers nationally ranked in top two Comfort Keepers has more than 650 national owners. In 2012, the company was ranked as one of the top two franchises in senior care by Franchise 500. There are 15 Comfort Keepers franchise owners in Wisconsin who work together as a team on a day-today basis to make a difference in the lives of seniors and those who are disabled. All caregivers are screened, bonded and insured with credit, motor vehicle & criminal background checks. Interactive caregivers like Lulrene are Comfort Keepers best asset, and along with its continuous training program, are the reasons Comfort Keepers has built the reputation it has. Locally, Comfort Keepers serves Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington, Jefferson and Walworth counties providing homemaking services such as: transportation, light housekeeping, meals, laundry and companionship. Personal care services include: incontinence care, bathing, overseeing medications, transferring and Hoyer Lift. Comfort Keepers also specializes in legal live-in, Alzheimers, respite care and interactive caregiving. Whether you choose the minimum of 3 hours a day or up to 24 hours a day, Comfort Keepers creed is to, Treat each and every client as if they are our own family member.

Lulrenes smile lights up Harriets home and life.

In 1920, the NAACP sent James Weldon Johnson on a fact finding trip to Haiti in response to reports of the mistreatment of Haitians and suppression of self rule during the war years. The leadership of IndependenceFirst and the Wheelchair Recycling Program (WRP) recently announced their nonprofit merger. Effective immediately, both the Madison and Milwaukee Area Wheelchair Recycling Program stores will be doing business as the IndependenceFirst Mobility Store as a program addition for nonprofit IndependenceFirst. This new IndependenceFirst program provides like-new quality devices at affordable prices for adults and children with disabilities, including older adults with age-related disability, who require mobility or medical equipment. We have had a supportive relationship with the Wheelchair Recycling Program for several years and it seemed the right time to keep this program going and formally extend our program reach and offer enhancements with a merger/acquisition. said IndependenceFirst Board Chair John Schmid. The Board felt this was a natural move, in keeping with IndependenceFirsts mission to assist people with disabilities to live independently, many of whom are on fixed incomes or unable otherwise to afford new durable medical equipment. For IndependenceFirst, there is benefit in creating a full complement of direct services promoting community-based independent living for people with disabilities of all ages and adding a revenue stream from a resale retail program offering like-new, refurbished durable medical equipment for the Metro Milwaukee-based nonprofit. For WRP, the merger brings brand enhancement, a strong referral partner, financial stability and administrative support for efficiencies. The IndependenceFirst Mobility Store will operate under this name change at existing stores in the Milwaukee area (12040 W. Feerick St., Unit N, Wauwatosa, WI 53222) and the Madison area (2554 Advance Rd., Madison, WI 53718). On-line Mobility Store Catalog:

www.ifmobility.org. High quality, low cost, refurbished mobility and medical equipment are discounted 25-90% off new prices and sold primarily to those who lack the resources to acquire new equipment, though the store is open to the general public for any customer wishing to purchase lower cost, like-new items. The IndependenceFirst Mobility Store continues its preexisting relationship with Badger State Industries and the WI Department of Corrections which provides inmate job skill training through the refurbishment of donated equipment to likenew condition prior to resale. The program also has a training partnership with Invacare corporation ensuring quality refurbishment and has created a hospitalaccreditation level sanitization process. Donated items provide donors with a tax deduction, items are reused and spared from landfills while 100% of the funds received for equipment is reinvested in the program, sustaining services. History of Wheelchair Recycling Program: The nonprofit was first established in Madison, Wisconsin in 1988 as an all-volunteer effort to send used medical equipment overseas. With serious needs in Wisconsin, WRP began to focus on providing services locally. In 2007, expansion continued with dedicated staff and an office in the Milwaukee area enabling WRP to offer its services across the state with the support of Independent Living Centers throughout Wisconsin. The program takes pride in assisting individuals to find the right piece of equipment so they can maintain their health, safety and continue to be independent. In just the past 2 years the program has diverted 160 tons of waste equipment from our landfills and provided over 2,800 consumers over 4,000 items. About IndependenceFirst: Since 1979, this nonprofit has assisted people with disabilities of all ages to live independently with over 20 programs and services. Born out of the disability right movement, over 51% of its onsite staff, managers and Board have disabilities themselves. The organization has been deemed the conscience of our community by Department of Justice regional representatives related to issues of inclusion and access through its awareness-building and advocacy activities. An additional 1,600 personal care workers help people with disabilities with activities of daily living in their own homes, allowing them to live outside of nursing homes. With over 5,000 calls annually and comprehensive disability resources, they wish to be the communitys FIRST place to call with questions related to disability and access. The City Milwaukee bills itself as, "The Genuine American City." And what could be more genuinely American than being home to Harley Davidson motorcycles? But more than being a manufacturing center, Milwaukee is a city steeped in both Old World tradition and culture brought by the many German, Polish, Irish, and English immigrants that arrived in the late 19th and early 20th century. Adding new vibrancy to the city are more recent migrations including, African-Americans who migrated to Milwaukee from the south in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, to the more recent immigration of Hispanic people groups and Milwaukee's fastest growing population segment, those from Southeast Asia. In fact, Milwaukee is home to over 20,000 Hmong and Laotian people. Reflective of that fact, Milwaukee has also become known as the "City of Festivals." Every year on Milwaukee's lakefront, festivals celebrating Milwaukee's ethnic diversity go on all summer long including Irish Fest, Arab World Fest, African World Fest, Festa Italiana, Mexican Fiesta, and many others complete with ethnic food, entertainment and fireworks. Yet despite the celebrations of diversity that Milwaukee enjoys, it remains a troubled city. In many ways the city is a city of contrasts: exciting ethnic diversity, but real racial tension. In fact, the LA Times rated Milwaukee as the most segregated city in the nation. It is a city of art and culture, boasting one of the most beautiful art museums in the nation and dotted with classic mansions from Milwaukee's day of glory, but having many and widespread areas of poverty and despair. The 2000 census reported that over 40% of children in Milwaukee live below the poverty level, ranking it fourth in the nation. It is in this environment that

IN YOUR SCHOOLS

If you could change one thing in your school, what would it be? When student members of the 50 Acts of Leadership program at James Madison Academic Campus were asked that question, they decided to do something to make the freshman hallway at their school more welcoming. After school on March 28, the students painted murals that will be placed above the lockers in the 9th-grade hallway. Wisconsin State Assembly District 11

Freshman hal l gets freshened up

Representative Mandela Barnes stopped by JMAC (which is located in District 11) to talk to the students before the project then stuck around to paint with them afterward. Forty freshmen are enrolled in the JMAC 50 Acts of Leadership program, which encourages students to take active roles in their communities by developing and executing projects aimed at these four groups: family, teachers, peers and friends, and community members. These students are the future of Milwaukee, and the community needs to see that positive participation in young peoples lives will ultimately lead to a greater society, said Representative Barnes. Our students need to see that even their elected representatives will literally stand by them as they grow into Milwaukees next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs and bright minds. Without giving our support to these students now, there isnt a bright future for Milwaukee. The JMAC 50 Acts of Leadership group meets twice a week with a City Year Milwaukee corps member for discussions that build trust, leadership and resiliency skills. More than 70 City Year Milwaukee corps members serve as tutors, mentors and service providers across the MPS district.

Whittier, which exceeds expectations in the tough new state report cards and exceeds state standardized test score averages, is being honored for its academic growth. I am very proud of Whittier School, school leader Peggy Mystrow said. Our vision statement is, your path to college starts here, and the teachers, parents and staff work very hard to ensure that all students succeed. The K4-5 school, located on the citys south side just northwest of General Mitchell International Airport, is an MPS-operated charter school with a neighborhood attendance area. Campus Notes The following area students have been accepted at University of Wisconsin-Stout for fall 2013 have been awarded the Chancellors Scholarship in the amount of $4,500.
